lib_teddybear_reading Project Sweet Dreams: Teen Board Hosts Summer Pajama Donation Box for MC Foster & Adoptive Children Remind Me about this Event   Tell a Friend
    Contact: Phyllis DiNardi   800 222 0047

The Teen Advisory Board (TAB) young adults is working with the Monmouth County Foster & Adoptive Services to prepare summer care packages for children in the F&A program by donating toothpaste, toothbrushes, books, and/or summer-weight pajamas for children (sizes 4 through adult).

There is an F&A donation box in Library Headquarters, Manalapan through June.  For more specific information, please contact
F&A’s Coordinator Phyllis DiNardi at 800/222-0047.

From the Foster & Adoptive Family Services website:  The heart of our mission is to provide support,

training and advocacy to meet the special needs of foster, adoptive and kinship families,

who provide safe, stable and nurturing homes for children in foster care.

Children are placed in care because it is unsafe for them to remain at home.

With the help of caring people like our Library patrons, FAFS helps bridge the gap between

what the governments can provide and what foster children actually need.

Once a limb of a tree . . . washed out to sea
weathered by the calms and the storms of the ocean waters.
Carried by the ebb and flow of the tides
on to the Jersey shore sands where dried by the heat of the sun.
Harvested after the days of summer end,
carrying all the mysteries and energies of these vast experiences
within each piece, into a new beginning.

Stop in and enjoy the Word Paintings— the idea of words being magical, empowering, and inspiring to live with as a form of art—of local artist Vincent DiGerlando.  The artist believes that this form of art is empowering as well as playful; inspiring, and nourishing to the mind, spirit, and soul.  (On display in the Wall Library display cabinet.)

Presented by Ray Chase, trustee of the New Jersey Antique Radio Club, InfoAge Museum, Wall Township

World War II was the first major conflict that relied heavily on the use of technology to win the battle, so much so that in his memoirs Winston Churchill referred to the race for electronic superiority as the “Wizard War.” The urgencies of war drove the creation of a host of new technologies, none more so than in the use of radar.

Today radar is present in many aspects of our daily life, yet for the most part we do not see or feel its presence.  How did it come about? Much of its story is local to New Jersey and was a closely guarded secret at the time.  Now, we can tell it all.

Prior to his retirement in 1997, Ray Chase worked for various NJ companies in the fields of military, aerospace, commercial and medical electronics.  Since retiring, he has volunteered at the InfoAge Museum on the site of the former Camp Evans, where he is chairman of the Radio Technology Museum.  He has studied the history of World War II as well as the history of the development of radio and electronics technology, with emphasis on the history of radar.

Please register for this program by calling the library.

In a country torn apart by war, a woman (Golshifteh Farahani) watches over her older husband who has been shot in the neck and reduced to a comatose state. She begins to speak truth to him, telling him about her suffering, her dreams and secrets. After years of living under his control, she says things she never could have said before. Her husband has unconsciously become a syngue sabour (the Patience Stone) - a magical black stone that, according to Persian mythology, absorbs the plight of those who confide in it. Director Atiq Rahimi has adapted his award-winning novel of the same name into an arresting allegorical tale about the trials of a modern-day Muslim woman whose very existence is awash in conflict.  In Persian with English subtitles. 102 minutes.

What makes a good movie?  Is it one full of action, comedy, romance, fantasy or one that has a message which may give the viewer a deeper meaning of what the movie is really about? Literary elements or devices, when interwoven together, create memorable movie masterpieces for all to remember.

Social Satire:    Social satire is the effort to use humor to expose the contradictions and foibles in our institutions, our society, and ourselves using the techniques of irony, exaggeration or absurdity to show the differences between how we behave and what we say we believe in.

This political and media satire was adapted from Larry Beinhart's novel, American Hero.  Two weeks prior to re-election, the President is accused of misdeeds. To keep the media from learning of this, the presidential adviser brings in political consultant and spin doctor to salvage operations by fabricating non-existent emergencies.  Dustin Hoffman, Robert De Niro, Anne Heche, Denis Leary, William H. Macy and Woody Harrelson star.

With the help of caring people like our Library patrons, FAFS helps bridge the gap between

what the governments can provide and what foster children actually need.

performed by the Shakespeare Theatre of NJ's Next Stage Ensemble

“A Midsummer Night’s Dream,” William Shakespeare's most popular comedy, portrays the adventures of four young lovers and a group of amateur actors, their interactions with woodland fairies and a duke and duchess. Taking place in a mythical Athens and an enchanted forest, there is a handsome fairy king, a misguided parent, star-crossed lovers, a weaver who's transformed into a half-donkey, wood sprites and elves. This work is about the world's most popular pastime, falling in love. But as Puck knows, falling in love can make fools of us all."

Shakespeare Theatre of New Jersey is New Jersey's only professional theatre company dedicated to Shakespeare's canon and other classic masterworks. Through its productions and education programs, the company strives to illuminate the universal and lasting relevance of the classics for contemporary audiences.  Its touring company,  Next Stage Ensemble, was created to foster the work of early career actors and to train them in ensemble-based performance techniques. Classic drama demands that actors are trained in this tradition. Participants work with The Shakespeare Theatre of New Jersey resident directors and guest directors on a fully developed production of an abridged classic play and a short collection of scenes and vignettes from the classical canon.

Cheap Therapy -  Meet Dr. Seltzer, an eccentric fellow who fancies himself a therapist.  He dispenses his advice right on the boardwalk in Ocean City, New Jersey.  As we meet some of his 'patients' we will witness his, well, 'unique' brand of therapy.  Watch out for that seltzer bottle!  (Written by Ed Shakespeare)

Under the Elephant - When two very old friends meet up on the Margate Beach, we catch a glimpse of the ups and downs of their lifelong friendship.  (Written by Ed Shakespeare)

Surf City Stars - It's the evening of the Surf City talent show and everything is going wrong.  We have an overwrought emcee, a tipsy tech man, and the contestants are behaving like divas.  Witness the behind-the-scenes mayhem and finally view the show, which includes a poetry reading, an actor's monologue, and some singing, of course.  Several audience members will be chosen to be the judges. What makes a good movie?  Is it one full of action, comedy, romance, fantasy or one that has a message which may give the viewer a deeper meaning of what the movie is really about? Literary elements or devices, when interwoven together, create memorable movie masterpieces for all to remember.

Plot:   There is a theory that there are only 7 original plots and that any story is really only a retelling of the same basic formats established long ago wrapped up in a different premise over and over. Plot is the who, what, where, when, why, how and with whom which hopefully creates a good sense of drama.

Film director Billy Wilder, instilled this classic courtroom drama with a cynical sense of humor focusing on treacherous and deceptive characters while retaining the intriguing plot twists of the famous Agatha Christie story. Much of the tension of the film lies in whether the aged barrister for the defense will make it through the grueling trial with all his health problems, let alone the constantly surprising turn of events.  Nominated for 6 Oscars, the film stars Tyrone Power, Marlene Dietrich and Charles Laughton.

Told in alternating voices, The Silent Wife is about a marriage in the throes of dissolution, a couple headed for catastrophe, concessions that can’t be made, and promises that won’t be kept. Expertly plotted and reminiscent of Gone Girl and These Things Hidden, The Silent Wife ensnares the reader from page one and does not let go.

Metaphor:  A metaphor is a comparison or analogy identifying one object with another and ascribing to the first object one or more of the qualities of the second.  Metaphors may be simple or large and function as the controlling image of a whole work.

Big Fish is a film that captures the excitement, magic, love, pain, and creativity of storytelling by showing the larger than life idea of fish and creation, imaginary worlds, and telling a fantastical story using metaphor, analogy and fable. Themes about life and death, about faith and miracles, about doubt and belief, and the mythic hero’s journey challenge the audience.  Ewan McGregor, Albert Finney, Jessica Lange, Helena Bonham Carter, and Steve Buscemi star.

What makes a good movie?  Is it one full of action, comedy, romance, fantasy or one that has a message which may give the viewer a deeper meaning of what the movie is really about? Literary elements or devices, when interwoven together, create memorable movie masterpieces for all to remember.

Atmosphere:  There are many film techniques used to create an atmospheric mood. Music (soundtrack) can help convey the mood of the films message.  Lighting and language, can also manipulate to achieve a desired dramatic effect.  It can signify truth and wisdom, trigger feelings of fear, tension or a sense of impending evil…it creates atmosphere.

Novelist Holly Martins travels to postwar Vienna only to find himself investigating the mysterious death of an old friend, Harry Lime.  From the first scene there is something strange and dangerous just below the surface in this film-noir classic which uses nighttime photography, shadows and tilted camera angles and close-ups to obscure reality. The famous zither music soundtrack creates a beautiful but strange sense of surroundings and the German spoken by the characters is not only a story device but emphasizes the confusion of the American which creates a mood that leaves the viewer anxious and apprehensive of what lies ahead.  Joseph Cotton, Orson Welles,Trevor Howard and Bernard Lee star.

holiday_civil_war 6:00 PM  -  8:30 PM The Road to Valhalla Sneak Preview Remind Me about this Event   Tell a Friend

When the Civil War erupted in 1861, it was a shock to many Americans, but it was not a shock to the people of the Kansas-Missouri border.  They had been at war since 1854, fighting whether Kansas would be a free state or a slave state.  Kansas entered the Union in January of 1861 as a free state at the same time that southern states were seceding from the Union.

The Road to Valhalla will conclude the story of the Kansas-Missouri Border War and Kansas’ role in it. The director, Ken Spurgeon, will join us for a question and answer session after the screening.

This documentary is scheduled to premier in October.  This program is co-sponsored by the New Jersey Civil War Heritage Association.
