“Antarctica - Travels at the End of the World”
Antarctica is the coldest, windiest, driest place on earth. Two-thirds of all our planet’s fresh water is locked up there in the form of ice in a continent twice the size of Australia. The last continent to be understood, it is a harsh and unforgiving environment that challenged and took the lives of many early explorers. Although an ice sheet covers 99 percent of the land, the exposed areas along the coast nourish a wealth of tiny plants and sea creatures which in turn support the world’s greatest concentrations of wildlife in the sea, on land, and in the air. The lecturer, Barry Pell, traveled by ship to Antarctica for two weeks in January 2017. Based on his travels on the sea and excursions onto the land, he will discuss and show his photography of this most magnificent and unique continent.

We will be meeting at the Bacon Free Library (58 Eliot St.) - see you there!

This month the Bacon Free Library and the Morse Institute Library Comic Book Club will read and discuss 5,000 km per Second by Manuele Fior. Telling the story of a relationship's before and after, the book begins with a glance exchanged between teenagers Piero and Lucia and ends with a wine-soaked encounter between the two in middle age. The intervening chapters provide little detail about their actual bond. Instead, readers feel the reverberations of that initial encounter throughout the couple's lives. Painted in vivid watercolors, the artwork does most of the storytelling.

Comic Book Group meets on the second Thursday of each month. Copies of this month's title will be available at the Bacon Free Library and the Morse Institute Library. Refreshments will be served. For more information contact Dave Bartos at 508-647-6521 or Meena Jain at 508-653-6730.

misc_none 7:00 PM  -  8:30 PM Ted Reinstein : New England’s General Stores     Tell a Friend
    Contact: Jason Homer     jhomer@minlib.net

Join us at 7pm with author Ted Reinstein and his new book New England’s General Stores: Exploring an American Classic.

The general store, as old as America itself, harkens back to a simpler time and a more innocent and rural nation. The general store conjures a country-like place where kids come in to by penny candy, and adults to buy everything from swaths of fabric, to fresh vegetables, to four-penny nails. It was a place to pick up mail, the newspaper, and perhaps tarry a bit on a cold, winter’s morning to chat over a cup of coffee and a warm wood stove. Long before “Cheers,” the general store was the vital and inviting heart of a community, where everyone not only knew your name, but how you took that coffee, how many kids you had, and how’s your dad doing, anyway? And in tough times, it was a place that often treated customers like family, extending credit when no one else would. The general store was real-life Norman Rockwell—deeply woven into America’s cultural identity, an integral part of the nation’s self-portrait from its earliest days. Fact is, the general store is still very much here, and very much in business. What’s more, like the diner, it has seen a resurgence. In some places, it is even being reimagined for a new era.

Advance Praise for The Story of Arthur Truluv

The Story of Arthur Truluv book cover"Elizabeth Berg's characters jump right off the page and into your heart. I dare you to read The Story of Arthur Truluv and not fall in love with Arthur Truluv. His story will make you laugh and cry, and show you a love that never ends, and what it means to be truly human." - Fannie Flagg, New York Times bestselling author of The Whole Town’s Talking

"Berg reminds us of both the richness of any human life and the heart's needed resilience." - Jane Hirshfield, author of The Beauty: Poems

“Fans of Meg Wolitzer, Emma Straub, or [Elizabeth] Berg’s previous novels will appreciate the richly complex characters and clear prose. Redemptive without being maudlin, this story of two misfits lucky to have found one another will tug at readers’ heartstrings.” - Booklist

This month the Comic Book Group will read and discuss Monstress by Marjorie Liu. Set in an alternate matriarchal 1900's Asia, in a richly imagined world of art deco-inflected steam punk, Monstress tells the story of a teenage girl who is struggling to survive the trauma of war, and who shares a mysterious psychic link with a monster of tremendous power, a connection that will transform them both and make them the target of both human and otherworldly powers.

Comic Book Group meets on the second Thursday of each month. Copies of this month's title will be available at the main desk. Refreshments will be served. For more information contact Dave Bartos at 508-647-6521.

This month the Comic Book Group will read and discuss Adulthood is a Myth by Sarah Andersen. These casually drawn, perfectly on-point comics by the hugely popular young Brooklyn-based artist Sarah Andersen are for the rest of us. They document the wasting of entire beautiful weekends on the internet, the unbearable agony of holding hands on the street with a gorgeous guy, and dreaming all day of getting home and back into pajamas. In other words, the horrors and awkwardnesses of young modern life.?

Comic Book Group meets on the second Thursday of each month. Copies of this month's title will be available at the main desk. Refreshments will be served. For more information contact Dave Bartos at 508-647-6521.

Jack, torn apart by the mysterious murder of his wife, Patience, flings himself back and forth through time to discover and punish the real culprit. Civil War Hijinks: A story told through family letters, songs and images from the time.

Letters, images, and music combine to provide fascinating insight into camp and home life in Middle America of the 1860's.

You will see photos of the day; images of the letters of Judy’s great-great-grandparents, Gilbert and Esther Claflin; and lyrics of the choruses projected on a large screen.  Judy, in costume, reads Esther’s letters, plays the tunes of the time, and sings songs that were written and sung during the Civil War.  Dennis Cook is the voice of Gilbert Claflin, and a welcome harmonizer.

The songs and tunes include both well-known favorites and unfamiliar gems. The themes are timeless: joy and sorrow, humor, courage and love.

The stories are told in the words of the people of the day: the writers of the songs and letters.  We sing together, as folks did then.  The audience is transported to the time of the Civil War in a very personal, eye-witness experience.

About the Artist:

Judy Cook is a published author, singer, and entertainer.  A packet of aged papers covered with sloping script in faded ink opened a window on the past for Judy.  Already established as an internationally touring performer, Judy was inspired to create entertaining programs from Nineteenth Century material. The letters and a decade’s research were published in 2013 by University of Wisconsin Press as “A Quiet Corner of the War: The Civil War Letters of Gilbert and Esther Claflin, Oconomowoc, WI, 1862-63”.

Judy Cook performs each year throughout the United States and Britain.  Judy is recognized for her depth of understanding and storytelling ability in ballad form, for her dedication to the music and for her willingness to do her research.  Judy has half a dozen CDs including one with many of the songs from this program.
