Burgess Boys by Elizabeth StroutJoin the Wednesday Evening Book Group as we read The Burgess Boys by Elizabeth Strout. The Burgesses have troubles both public and secret: sour, divorced Susan, who stayed in the family's hometown of Shirley Falls, Maine, with her teenage son Zachary; big-hearted Bob, who feels guilty about their father's fatal car accident; and celebrity defense lawyer Jim, who moved to Brooklyn, N.Y. When Zachary hurls a bloody pig's head into a Somali mosque during Ramadan, fragile connections between siblings, the Somalis, and other Shirley Falls residents are tested.

And remember to catch up with the Wednesday Evening Book Group online! Check back all month and get the book discussion started early.

The Wednesday evening book group meets the last Wednesday of the month. Refreshments will be provided. No registration is required, and copies of this month's title will be available at the circulation desk.

Join the Bacon Free Library and the Morse Institute Library Graphic Novel Book Club as we read Hark! A Vagrant! by Kate Beaton. No era or tome emerges unscathed as Beaton rightly skewers the Western world's revolutionaries, leaders, sycophants, and suffragists while equally honing her wit on the hapless heroes, heroines, and villains of the best-loved fiction.

The Graphic Novel Book Group is on Goodreads - see what we've read, what we plan to read, and join the conversation in between meetings!

Graphic Novel Book Group takes places on the second Thursday of each month. Copies of this month's title will be available at the Bacon Free Library and the Morse Institute Library. Refreshments will be served. For more information contact Dave Bartos at 508-647-6521 or Meena Jain at 508-653-6730.

Time is running out. Should the secular court overrule sincerely expressed faith? In the course of reaching a decision, Fiona visits Adam in the hospital--an encounter that stirs long-buried feelings in her and powerful new emotions in the boy. Her judgment has momentous consequences for them both.

Charles Dickens’ “A Christmas Carol” has been inspiring readers with its story of generosity and giving since it first came out in 1843. The tale of Ebenezer Scrooge’s change from angry curmudgeon to understanding individual is touching and entertaining.  Performer Al LePage recreates himself as Englishman Thomas Hutchinson, who in turn plays all 26 characters in the script.

Through shifts in mannerisms, accents, and levels of ectoplasm, LePage/Hutchinson pays homage to the first public reading of the novel, which was performed solely by Dickens himself. During the one-man show, he may even call audience members on stage to banter and give them gifts. Attendees can also interact with LePage beforehand, when he tells stories in character, and shares mince tarts and spiced cider with the crowd. A holiday treat for adults and older children.

From sports to politics, food to finance, aviation to engineering, to bitter disputes over simple boundaries themselves, New England’s feuds have peppered the region’s life for centuries. They’ve been raw and rowdy, sometimes high minded and humorous, and in a place renowned for its deep sense of history, often long-running and legendary. There are even some that will undoubtedly outlast the region’s ancient low stonewalls. Ted Reinstein, a native New Englander, writer and reporter for "Chronicle," offers us fascinating stories, some known, others not so much, from the history of New England in this fun, accessible book. Bringing to life many of the fights, spats, and arguments that have, in many ways, shaped the area itself, Reinstein demonstrates what it really means to be Wicked Pissed.
