No one is unemployed and everyone gets a comfortable, clean house to live in...but only for six months out of the year...

And remember to catch up with the Wednesday Evening Book Group online! Check back all month and get the book discussion started early.

This month the Wednesday Evening Book Group will read and discuss Being Mortal by Atul Gawande. Gawande, a practicing surgeon, addresses his profession's ultimate limitation, arguing that quality of life is the desired goal for patients and families. Gawande offers examples of freer, more socially fulfilling models for assisting the infirm and dependent elderly, and he explores the varieties of hospice care to demonstrate that a person's last weeks or months may be rich and dignified.

This month the Bacon Free Library and the Morse Institute Library Comic Book Club will read and discuss Rolling Blackouts by Sarah Glidden. Glidden does a brilliant job in chronicling a two-month journey with journalist friends through Turkey, Syria, and Iraq to report stories about the impact of the Iraq War on Middle Eastern inhabitants. The power of Glidden's narrative is in how it asks fundamental questions about what journalism is, what kinds of stories it tells, and what purpose these stories serve. She also manages to crystallize hours of recorded interviews with the locals into insightful discussions of complex situations. Hand-drawn panels, word balloons, and text combine with gorgeous watercolors to keep the story visually interesting, with many small storytelling touches that help tell a complicated story with no pat answers.

Comic Book Group meets on the second Thursday of each month. Copies of this month's title will be available at the Bacon Free Library and the Morse Institute Library. Refreshments will be served. For more information contact Dave Bartos at 508-647-6521 or Meena Jain at 508-653-6730.

This month the Bacon Free Library and the Morse Institute Library Comic Book Club will read and discuss Alice in Sunderland by Bryan Talbot. Lewis Carroll's Alice's Adventures in Wonderland (1865) and Through the Looking Glass (1872) have had an immeasurable impact on children's literature and, indeed, the entire spectrum of popular entertainment, with Carroll's absurdist wordplay and surreal scenarios inspiring artistic visionaries from Salvador Dali to John Lennon. Such interesting literary tidbits as those abound in Talbot's lavishly illustrated graphic "entertainment" tracing the historical and cultural influences behind Carroll's masterpieces.

Comic Book Group meets on the second Thursday of each month. Copies of this month's title will be available at the Bacon Free Library and the Morse Institute Library. Refreshments will be served. For more information contact Dave Bartos at 508-647-6521 or Meena Jain at 508-653-6730.

Do you like taking things apart and seeing how they work? Does it bother you to dump a gadget in the trash knowing it could probably be fixed? Does it feel good to give an appliance new life?

If you answered yes to any of these questions, come to the Natick Repair Cafe! Just about everything today can be fixed with a few tools and some know-how: appliances, cars, electronics, computers, and tools too! There are many pluses to fixing your items, and not merely accepting that all consumer objects are disposable. Let's gather to share our repair successes and failures, spread the word on repair, and help each other fix our stuff!

The Comic Book Group will meet this month at Bacon Free Library (58 Eliot St. Natick, MA)

This month the Bacon Free Library and the Morse Institute Library Comic Book Club will read and discuss The Mighty Thor by Jason Aaron and Russell Dauterman. When the classic Thor is no longer righteous enough to wield his hero-making mallet, the only person worthy enough to take up the mantle is ... well, you don't find out in this volume. But the point is that it's a lady, and she's every bit up to the task. Marvel stalwart Aaron ensures that there's enough humor and scrappy personality to offset all the standard trappings. Dauterman's majestic, gleaming figures, meanwhile, smash through intricately imagined fantasy environments.

Comic Book Group meets on the second Thursday of each month. Copies of this month's title will be available at the Bacon Free Library and the Morse Institute Library. Refreshments will be served. For more information contact Dave Bartos at 508-647-6521 or Meena Jain at 508-653-6730.
