Join the Wednesday Evening Book Group as we read The Children Act by Ian McEwen. Fiona Maye, a leading High Court judge is called on to try an urgent case: Adam, a beautiful seventeen-year-old boy, is refusing for religious reasons the medical treatment that could save his life, and his devout parents echo his wishes. Time is running out. Should the secular court overrule sincerely expressed faith? In the course of reaching a decision, Fiona visits Adam in the hospital--an encounter that stirs long-buried feelings in her and powerful new emotions in the boy. Her judgment has momentous consequences for them both.

And remember to catch up with the Wednesday Evening Book Group online! Check back all month and get the book discussion started early.

The Wednesday evening book group meets the last Wednesday of the month. Refreshments will be provided. No registration is required, and copies of this month's title will be available at the circulation desk.

Join the Wednesday Evening Book Group as we read The Plague of Doves by Louise Erdrich. In distinct and winning voices, Erdrich's narrators unravel the stories of different generations and families in this corner of North Dakota. Bound by love, torn by history, the two communities' collective stories finally come together in a wrenching truth revealed in the novel's final pages. The Plague of Doves is one of the major achievements of Louise Erdrich's considerable oeuvre, a quintessentially American story and the most complex and original of her books.

Charles Dickens’ “A Christmas Carol” has been inspiring readers with its story of generosity and giving since it first came out in 1843. The tale of Ebenezer Scrooge’s change from angry curmudgeon to understanding individual is touching and entertaining.  Performer Al LePage recreates himself as Englishman Thomas Hutchinson, who in turn plays all 26 characters in the script.

Through shifts in mannerisms, accents, and levels of ectoplasm, LePage/Hutchinson pays homage to the first public reading of the novel, which was performed solely by Dickens himself. During the one-man show, he may even call audience members on stage to banter and give them gifts. Attendees can also interact with LePage beforehand, when he tells stories in character, and shares mince tarts and spiced cider with the crowd. A holiday treat for adults and older children.

Join the Morse Institute Library and the MetroWest Health Foundation for a series of films and panel discussions on health issues facing the community.

By way of the harrowing and inspiring stories of three subjects - Oryx, Jen, and Dan - Healing Voices challenges us to rethink our cultural understanding of "mental illness" by bringing a message of recovery, and charting a course for effective alternative treatments that enable people to live productive and meaningful lives.

The screening will be followed by a panel discussion of mental health care, featuring:

  • First Panelist To Be Named
  • Second Panelist To Be Named
  • Third Panelist To Be Named

This event is free and open to the public. Doors open at 6:00pm, and film starts at 6:30pm. Light supper will be served.

From sports to politics, food to finance, aviation to engineering, to bitter disputes over simple boundaries themselves, New England’s feuds have peppered the region’s life for centuries. They’ve been raw and rowdy, sometimes high minded and humorous, and in a place renowned for its deep sense of history, often long-running and legendary. There are even some that will undoubtedly outlast the region’s ancient low stonewalls. Ted Reinstein, a native New Englander, writer and reporter for "Chronicle," offers us fascinating stories, some known, others not so much, from the history of New England in this fun, accessible book. Bringing to life many of the fights, spats, and arguments that have, in many ways, shaped the area itself, Reinstein demonstrates what it really means to be Wicked Pissed.

Join the Morse Institute Library and the MetroWest Health Foundation for a series of films and panel discussions on health issues facing the community.

Gen Silent is the new LGBT documentary from award-winning director Stu Maddux that asks six LGBT seniors if they will hide their lives to survive. As we journey through the challenges that these men and women face, we also see reasons for hope as each subject crosses paths with a small but growing group of impassioned professionals trying to wake up the long-term and healthcare industries to their plight.

The screening will be followed by a panel discussion of LGBT aging, featuring:

Heroin: Cape Cod, MA - part of the Community Health Film Series at the Morse Institute

Join the Morse Institute Library and the MetroWest Health Foundation for a series of films and panel discussions on health issues facing the community.

Heroin: Cape Cod, USA is a cinema-verité look at the heroin epidemic currently sweeping America's small towns and communities. Known for its quaint villages, lighthouses, and beaches, the picturesque summer vacation destination of Cape Cod has been struck with an epidemic of young people hooked on affordable, easily acquired heroin. This harrowing film takes an unsparing look at the lives of eight heroin addicts in their early 20s, living a seemingly endless existence of getting high while cycling through stages of rehab, recovery and relapse.

The screening will be followed by a panel discussion of opioid addiction, featuring:

  • First Panelist To Be Named
  • Second Panelist To Be Named
  • Third Panelist To Be Named

This event is free and open to the public. Doors open at 6:00pm, and film starts at 6:30pm. Light supper will be served.

Join the Wednesday Evening Book Group as we read Thread of Grace by Mary Doria Russell. As the story opens, the mountainous region of northwest Italy has been relatively untouched by WWII, and even Jews have been safe. When Italy breaks with Germany in 1943 and pulls out of southern France, thousands of Jewish refugees cross the mountains in search of safety. But the German occupation of Italy poses a new threat. Even with the list that's provided, it can be hard to keep track of all the characters--Catholics and Jews, priests and rabbis, Germans and Italians, old and young, Nazis and Resistance fighters. But Russell is good at presenting the human story while never using the war merely as a backdrop for personal dramas. In fact, to mirror the arbitrary nature of survival during wartime, she has said that she flipped a coin to determine who among her characters would live and who would die.
