Kevin O’Hara, author of the Last of the Donkey Pilgrims, visits Natick again with funny, sweet and moving stories of growing up Irish in Massachusetts in the ‘50s and 60s. One of eight children of poor Irish immigrants, O’Hara learned lessons of making do, and what the true riches of the world are. His stories will tug at our heart and illuminate the Irish-American experience growing up in the shadow of WWII and at the start of a new age of hope and promise.

Join the Bacon Free Library and the Morse Institute Library Graphic Novel Book Club as we read Pyongyang: A Journey into North Korea by Guy Delisle. Famously referred to as one of the "Axis of Evil" countries, North Korea remains one of the most secretive and mysterious nations in the world today. In early 2001 cartoonist Guy Delisle became one of the few Westerners to be allowed access to the fortresslike country. While living in the nation's capital for two months on a work visa for a French film animation company, Delisle observed what he was allowed to see of the culture and lives of the few North Koreans he encountered; his findings form the basis of this remarkable graphic novel.

The Graphic Novel Book Group is on Goodreads - see what we've read, what we plan to read, and join the conversation in between meetings!

Graphic Novel Book Group takes places on the second Thursday of each month. Copies of this month's title will be available at the Bacon Free Library and the Morse Institute Library. Refreshments will be served. For more information contact Dave Bartos at 508-647-6521 or Meena Jain at 508-653-6730.

Join the Morning Book Group as we read Balzac and the Little Chinese Seamstress by Ina Rilke. This book tells the story of two hapless city boys exiled to a remote mountain village for re-education during China's infamous Cultural Revolution. There the two friends meet the daughter of the local tailor and discover a hidden stash of Western classics in Chinese translation. As they flirt with the seamstress and secretly devour these banned works, the two friends find transit from their grim surroundings to worlds they never imagined.

And don’t forget to catch up with the Wednesday Morning Book Group online! Keep an eye on the blog all month long and get the book discussion started early.

Join us for Storytimes for two year olds and their first time threes with their grown-ups. Siblings welcome. Each program includes 30 minutes of stories, songs, fingerplays and stretches.

The theme for this program is “In the Garden.” Sign up begins Monday, May 16.

Spring 2016 Schedule:

  • Tuesday, April 12 at 10:30am "Puddly Days" - sign up begins Monday, April 4
  • Tuesday, April 26 at 10:30am "Spring Things" - sign up begins Friday, April 15

  • Tuesday, May 24 at 10:30am "In the Garden" - sign up begins Monday, May 16

Because little listeners are easily distracted, latecomers are asked not to enter the story room once the program is underway. If possible, do remain in the library to enjoy the toys and books together. We always miss you when you cannot attend, but thank you for keeping sick children at home.

An adult must register and attend with each little listener. To register visit the Children’s Room or call us at 508-647-6522. Space is limited. Thank you for notifying the library if you need to cancel your registration. Little Listeners is cancelled if the Natick Public Schools are closed due to inclement weather.

Join the Wednesday Evening Book Group as we read Cannery Row by John Steinbeck. Published in 1945, Cannery Row focuses on the acceptance of life as it is: both the exuberance of community and the loneliness of the individual. Drawing on his memories of the real inhabitants of Monterey, California, Steinbeck interweaves the stories of Doc, Dora, Mack and his boys, Lee Chong, and the other characters in this world where only the fittest survive, to create a novel that is at once one of his most humorous and poignant works.

And remember to catch up with the Wednesday Evening Book Group online! Check back all month and get the book discussion started early.

The Wednesday evening book group meets the last Wednesday of the month. Refreshments will be provided. No registration is required, and copies of this month's title will be available at the circulation desk.

Join the Bacon Free Library and the Morse Institute Library Graphic Novel Book Club as we read SuperMutant Magic Academy by Jillian Tamaki. The story focuses around Marsha, a tomboyish, frumpy broom-flyer, and Wendy, her beautiful best friend who can transform into a fox. Marsha's very real love for Wendy drives the text, but other students have their own agonies, which they keep hidden in plain sight. The humor is sometimes slapstick, but more often it offers ultra-dry observations on modern disengagement. Tamaki is playful and loose with her art, unafraid to be experimental as she draws us into a world where true feelings are the greatest danger.

Join the Wednesday Evening Book Group as we read Plague of Doves by Louise Erdrich. In distinct and winning voices, Erdrich's narrators unravel the stories of different generations and families in this corner of North Dakota. Bound by love, torn by history, the two communities' collective stories finally come together in a wrenching truth revealed in the novel's final pages.

And remember to catch up with the Wednesday Evening Book Group online! Check back all month and get the book discussion started early.

The Wednesday evening book group meets the last Wednesday of the month. Refreshments will be provided. No registration is required, and copies of this month's title will be available at the circulation desk.

Charles Dickens’ “A Christmas Carol” has been inspiring readers with its story of generosity and giving since it first came out in 1843. The tale of Ebenezer Scrooge’s change from angry curmudgeon to understanding individual is touching and entertaining.  Performer Al LePage recreates himself as Englishman Thomas Hutchinson, who in turn plays all 26 characters in the script. Through shifts in mannerisms, accents, and levels of ectoplasm, LePage/Hutchinson pays homage to the first public reading of the novel, which was performed solely by Dickens himself. During the one-man show, he may even call audience members on stage to banter and give them gifts. Attendees can also interact with LePage beforehand, when he tells stories in character, and shares mince tarts and spiced cider with the crowd. A holiday treat for adults and older children.
