This month the Bacon Free Library and the Morse Institute Library Comic Book Club will read and discuss March by John Lewis and Andrew Aydin, illustrated by Nate Powell. March is a vivid first-hand account of John Lewis's lifelong struggle for civil and human rights, meditating in the modern age on the distance traveled since the days of Jim Crow and segregation. Rooted in Lewis's personal story, it also reflects on the highs and lows of the broader civil rights movement. Book One spans John Lewis' youth in rural Alabama, his life-changing meeting with Martin Luther King, Jr., the birth of the NashvilleStudent Movement, and their battle to tear down segregation through nonviolent lunch counter sit-ins, building to a stunning climax on the steps of CityHall.

The Graphic Novel Book Group is now the Comic Book Group! We meet on the second Thursday of each month. Copies of this month's title will be available at the Bacon Free Library and the Morse Institute Library. Refreshments will be served. For more information contact Dave Bartos at 508-647-6521 or Meena Jain at 508-653-6730.

misc_none 6:00 PM  -  9:00 PM Community Health Film Series - Passing On     Tell a Friend

The Morse Institute Library is partnering with the MetroWest Health Foundation for a series of films and panel discussions on health issues facing the community.

Passing On tells l the sensitive, powerful stories of people facing their own mortality, of the family and friends caring for them, and of the medical professionals trying to ease their patients’ pain and the families’ burdens. Each experience serves as a reminder of the importance of making our own wishes known to our loved ones and our healthcare providers, thus relieving them of the need to guess when our time comes.

There will be a panel discussion on end-of-life care following the film.

This event is free and open to the public. Doors open at 6:00pm, and film starts at 6:30pm. Light supper will be served.

Part of the Community Health Film Series presented in partnership with the MetroWest Health Foundation. Program funded by a grant from the Leonard Morse Grants Panel.

This month the Morning Book Group will read and discuss Claire of the Sea Light by Edwidge Danticat. Told with piercing lyricism and the economy of a fable, Claire of the Sea Light is a tightly woven, breathtaking tapestry that explores what it means to be a parent, child, neighbor, lover, and friend while revealing the mysterious bonds we share with the natural world and with one another.

The morning book group meets the third Wednesday of the month September through June. Join us for a lively discussion and a cup of tea. No need to sign up! Copies of this month's title are available at the circulation desk – call 508-647-6520 to request a copy.

This month the Bacon Free Library and the Morse Institute Library Comic Book Club will read and discuss Ghost in the Shell by Masamune Shirow. In a world in which the human mind can be programmed like a computer, where does the human soul end and the cybernetic machinery begin? What does it mean to be human? From Masamune Shirow, the creator of Appleseed, Orion, and Dominion: Tank Police, comes an epic, dystopian tale of politics, covert actions, and cyborgs with too much attitude!

Heroin: Cape Cod, MA - part of the Community Health Film Series at the Morse Institute

The Morse Institute Library is partnering with the MetroWest Health Foundation for a series of films and panel discussions on health issues facing the community.

Heroin: Cape Cod, USA is a cinema-verité look at the heroin epidemic currently sweeping America's small towns and communities. Known for its quaint villages, lighthouses, and beaches, the picturesque summer vacation destination of Cape Cod has been struck with an epidemic of young people hooked on affordable, easily acquired heroin. This harrowing film takes an unsparing look at the lives of eight heroin addicts in their early 20s, living a seemingly endless existence of getting high while cycling through stages of rehab, recovery and relapse.

The screening will be followed by a panel discussion of opioid addiction.

This event is free and open to the public. Doors open at 6:00pm, and film starts at 6:30pm. Light supper will be served.

Part of the Community Health Film Series presented in partnership with the MetroWest Health Foundation. Program funded by a grant from the Leonard Morse Grants Panel.

The Wednesday Evening Book Group will read and discuss Thread of Grace by Mary Doria Russell. As the story opens, the mountainous region of northwest Italy has been relatively untouched by WWII, and even Jews have been safe. When Italy breaks with Germany in 1943 and pulls out of southern France, thousands of Jewish refugees cross the mountains in search of safety. But the German occupation of Italy poses a new threat. Even with the list that's provided, it can be hard to keep track of all the characters--Catholics and Jews, priests and rabbis, Germans and Italians, old and young, Nazis and Resistance fighters. But Russell is good at presenting the human story while never using the war merely as a backdrop for personal dramas. In fact, to mirror the arbitrary nature of survival during wartime, she has said that she flipped a coin to determine who among her characters would live and who would die.

This month the Wednesday Evening Book Group will read and discuss Native Speaker by Chang-rae Lee. In this story, Lee introduces us to Henry Park, whose harsh Korean upbringing has taught him to hide his emotions, remember everything he learns, and most of all to feel an overwhelming sense of alienation. In other words, it has shaped him as a natural spy. But the very attributes that help him to excel in his profession put a strain on his marriage to his American wife and stand in the way of his coming to terms with his young son's death. When he is assigned to spy on a rising Korean-American politician, his very identity is tested, and he must figure out who he is amid not only the conflicts within himself but also within the ethnic and political tensions of the New York City streets. Native Speaker is a story of cultural alienation. It is about fathers and sons, about the desire to connect with the world rather than stand apart from it, about loyalty and betrayal, about the alien in all of us and who we finally are.

This month the Wednesday Evening Book Group will read and discuss Being Mortal by Atul Gawande. Gawande, a practicing surgeon, addresses his profession's ultimate limitation: arguing that quality of life is the desired goal for patients and families. Gawande offers examples of freer, more socially fulfilling models for assisting the infirm and dependent elderly, and he explores the varieties of hospice care to demonstrate that a person's last weeks or months may be rich and dignified. Full of eye-opening research and riveting storytelling, Being Mortal asserts that medicine can comfort and enhance our experience even to the end, providing not only a good life but also a good end.

This month the Wednesday Evening Book Group will read and discuss Us by David Nicholls. In this compellingly human, deftly funny new novel we meet mild-mannered Douglas Petersen who, against all odds, seduces beautiful Connie into a second date . . . and eventually into marriage. Now, almost three decades after their relationship first blossomed, they live more or less happily in the suburbs with their moody seventeen-year-old son, Albie. Then Connie tells him she thinks she wants a divorce. Us is a moving meditation on the demands of marriage and parenthood, the regrets of abandoning youth for middle age, and the intricate relationship between the heart and the head.

This month the Wednesday Evening Book Group will read and discuss Beyond Magenta: Transgender Teens Speak Out by Susan Kuklin. This groundbreaking work of LGBT literature takes an honest look at the life, love, and struggles of transgender teens. Author and photographer Kuklin met and interviewed six transgender or gender-neutral young adults and used her considerable skills to represent them thoughtfully and respectfully before, during, and after their personal acknowledgment of gender preference.
