Join us for Storytimes for two year olds, first time threes, and grown-ups together. Siblings welcome. Each program includes 30 minutes of stories, songs, fingerplays and stretches.

An adult must register and attend with each little listener. To register visit the Children’s Room or call us at 508-647-6522. Space is limited. This month the Bacon Free Library and the Morse Institute Library Comic Book Club will read and discuss Thoreau: A Sublime Life by A. Dan and Maximilien Le Roy. This graphic novel biography relates the forward-looking inspirational life of the great author, philosopher and pioneering ecologist. Henry David Thoreau was also the father of the concept, still fresh today (viz 'Occupy Wall St.'), of 'civil disobedience' which he used against slavery and the encroachment of government.

Comic Book Group meets on the second Thursday of each month. Copies of this month's title will be available at the Bacon Free Library and the Morse Institute Library. Refreshments will be served. For more information contact Dave Bartos at 508-647-6521 or Meena Jain at 508-653-6730.

Walden Woods logo

In conjunction with the Bacon Free Library, we're celebrating the Bicentennial of the birth of Henry David Thoreau. We' re going to meet at Walden Woods (44 Baker Farm Road, Lincoln, MA) and have a private tour of Thoreau's Library. This is a session with the Walden Woods Project's Curator of Collections, author and Thoreau scholar, Jeffrey S. Cramer, in the Thoreau Institute Library. The library maintains the most comprehensive body of Thoreau-related material available in one place. Mr. Cramer will provide an introduction to Thoreau and the era in which he lived, and will discuss Thoreau's life and writings as they relate to historical items on display in the library.

Then, we will visit the iconic place that has become synonymous with Thoreau - Walden Pond. This month the Bacon Free Library and the Morse Institute Library Comic Book Club will meet at AMC Framingham 16 to read and discuss Thor: The Goddess of Thunder and watch Thor: Ragnarok!

When the classic Thor is no longer righteous enough to wield his hero-making mallet, the only person worthy enough to take up the mantle is a lady, and she's every bit up to the task. Marvel stalwart Aaron ensures that there's enough humor and scrappy personality to offset all the standard trappings. Dauterman's majestic, gleaming figures, meanwhile, smash through intricately imagined fantasy environments.

Comic Book Group meets on the second Thursday of each month. Copies of this month's title will be available at the Bacon Free Library and the Morse Institute Library. Refreshments will be served. For more information contact Dave Bartos at 508-647-6521 or Meena Jain at 508-653-6730.

misc_none 6:30 PM  -  8:30 PM Interview Workshop Part Three: Tell Me About Yourself     Tell a Friend

Often the most common question that begins an interview is, "Tell me about yourself." Job applicants should welcome this question with open arms as it gives them a beautiful chance to talk about themselves in the most positive light. In this workshop, we will discuss best practices as it relates to what to say, what examples to highlight, where to begin, and when/where to end to make it a compelling story.

This month the Bacon Free Library and the Morse Institute Library Comic Book Club will read and discuss 5,000 km per Second by Manuele Fior. Telling the story of a relationship's before and after, the book begins with a glance exchanged between teenagers Piero and Lucia and ends with a wine-soaked encounter between the two in middle age. The intervening chapters provide little detail about their actual bond. Instead, readers feel the reverberations of that initial encounter throughout the couple's lives. Painted in vivid watercolors, the artwork does most of the storytelling.

Comic Book Group meets on the second Thursday of each month. Copies of this month's title will be available at the Bacon Free Library and the Morse Institute Library. Refreshments will be served. For more information contact Dave Bartos at 508-647-6521 or Meena Jain at 508-653-6730.

    Contact: Jason Homer     jhomer@minlib.net

Join us at 7pm with author Ted Reinstein and his new book New England’s General Stores: Exploring an American Classic.

The general store, as old as America itself, harkens back to a simpler time and a more innocent and rural nation. The general store conjures a country-like place where kids come in to by penny candy, and adults to buy everything from swaths of fabric, to fresh vegetables, to four-penny nails. It was a place to pick up mail, the newspaper, and perhaps tarry a bit on a cold, winter’s morning to chat over a cup of coffee and a warm wood stove. Long before “Cheers,” the general store was the vital and inviting heart of a community, where everyone not only knew your name, but how you took that coffee, how many kids you had, and how’s your dad doing, anyway? And in tough times, it was a place that often treated customers like family, extending credit when no one else would. The general store was real-life Norman Rockwell—deeply woven into America’s cultural identity, an integral part of the nation’s self-portrait from its earliest days. Fact is, the general store is still very much here, and very much in business. What’s more, like the diner, it has seen a resurgence. In some places, it is even being reimagined for a new era.

    Contact: Jason Homer     jhomer@minlib.net

Civil War Hijinks: A story told through family letters, songs and images from the time.

Letters, images, and music combine to provide fascinating insight into camp and home life in Middle America of the 1860's.

You will see photos of the day; images of the letters of Judy’s great-great-grandparents, Gilbert and Esther Claflin; and lyrics of the choruses projected on a large screen.  Judy, in costume, reads Esther’s letters, plays the tunes of the time, and sings songs that were written and sung during the Civil War.  Dennis Cook is the voice of Gilbert Claflin, and a welcome harmonizer.

The songs and tunes include both well-known favorites and unfamiliar gems. The themes are timeless: joy and sorrow, humor, courage and love.

The stories are told in the words of the people of the day: the writers of the songs and letters.  We sing together, as folks did then.  The audience is transported to the time of the Civil War in a very personal, eye-witness experience.

About the Artist:

Judy Cook is a published author, singer, and entertainer.  A packet of aged papers covered with sloping script in faded ink opened a window on the past for Judy.  Already established as an internationally touring performer, Judy was inspired to create entertaining programs from Nineteenth Century material. The letters and a decade’s research were published in 2013 by University of Wisconsin Press as “A Quiet Corner of the War: The Civil War Letters of Gilbert and Esther Claflin, Oconomowoc, WI, 1862-63”.

Judy Cook performs each year throughout the United States and Britain.  Judy is recognized for her depth of understanding and storytelling ability in ballad form, for her dedication to the music and for her willingness to do her research.  Judy has half a dozen CDs including one with many of the songs from this program.
