    Contact: Jen McGillis   508-647-6520   jmcgillis@minlib.net

Join the Wednesday Evening Book Group as we read Someone by Alice McDermott. Winner of the National Book Award for Charming Billy, McDermott continues to captivate readers by delving into ordinary, daily life with skill and compassion, showing us that we can't always see at the time what will be meaningful in our lives. When readers first meet Marie Commeford, she is seven years old, waiting on the steps for her father to return to their Brooklyn home. From a chance encounter with a hapless neighbor girl that same day to her parents' deaths, through World War II, Marie's first sexual encounter, marriage and children, to her brother's sudden departure from the priesthood, this novel moves from one emotionally rich touch point to the next in a nonlinear narrative that echoes memory itself.

And remember to catch up with the Wednesday Evening Book Group online! Check back all month and get the book discussion started early.

The Wednesday evening book group meets the last Wednesday of the month. Refreshments will be provided. No registration is required, and copies of this month's title will be available at the circulation desk.

Charles Dickens’ “A Christmas Carol” has been inspiring readers with its story of generosity and giving since it first came out in 1843. The tale of Ebenezer Scrooge’s change from angry curmudgeon to understanding individual is touching and entertaining.  Performer Al LePage recreates himself as Englishman Thomas Hutchinson, who in turn plays all 26 characters in the script.

Through shifts in mannerisms, accents, and levels of ectoplasm, LePage/Hutchinson pays homage to the first public reading of the novel, which was performed solely by Dickens himself. During the one-man show, he may even call audience members on stage to banter and give them gifts. Attendees can also interact with LePage beforehand, when he tells stories in character, and shares mince tarts and spiced cider with the crowd. A holiday treat for adults and older children.
