misc_none 3:00 PM  -  4:30 PM Civil War Hijinks with Judy Cook     Tell a Friend
    Contact: Jason Homer     jhomer@minlib.net

Civil War Hijinks: A story told through family letters, songs and images from the time.

Letters, images, and music combine to provide fascinating insight into camp and home life in Middle America of the 1860's.

You will see photos of the day; images of the letters of Judy’s great-great-grandparents, Gilbert and Esther Claflin; and lyrics of the choruses projected on a large screen.  Judy, in costume, reads Esther’s letters, plays the tunes of the time, and sings songs that were written and sung during the Civil War.  Dennis Cook is the voice of Gilbert Claflin, and a welcome harmonizer.

The songs and tunes include both well-known favorites and unfamiliar gems. The themes are timeless: joy and sorrow, humor, courage and love.

The stories are told in the words of the people of the day: the writers of the songs and letters.  We sing together, as folks did then.  The audience is transported to the time of the Civil War in a very personal, eye-witness experience.

About the Artist:

Judy Cook is a published author, singer, and entertainer.  A packet of aged papers covered with sloping script in faded ink opened a window on the past for Judy.  Already established as an internationally touring performer, Judy was inspired to create entertaining programs from Nineteenth Century material. The letters and a decade’s research were published in 2013 by University of Wisconsin Press as “A Quiet Corner of the War: The Civil War Letters of Gilbert and Esther Claflin, Oconomowoc, WI, 1862-63”.

Judy Cook performs each year throughout the United States and Britain.  Judy is recognized for her depth of understanding and storytelling ability in ballad form, for her dedication to the music and for her willingness to do her research.  Judy has half a dozen CDs including one with many of the songs from this program.

    Contact: Kate Sawisch     ksawisch@minlib.net

We are pleased to welcome local author Max Klau!

Recent events have turned the spotlight on the issue of race in modern America, and the current cultural climate calls out for more research, education, dialogue, and understanding. Max Klau's  Race and Social Change: A Quest, A Study, A Call to Action focuses on a provocative social science experiment with the potential to address these needs. Through an analysis grounded in the perspectives of developmental psychology, adaptive leadership and complex systems theory, the inquiry at the heart of this book illuminates dynamics of race and social change in surprising and important ways.  Max explains how his own quest for insight into these matters led to the empirical study at the heart of this book, and he presents the results of years of research that integrate findings at the individual, group, and whole system levels of analysis. It's an effort to explore one of the most controversial and deeply divisive subject's in American civic life using the tools of social science and empiricism.

MAX KLAU is the Chief Program Officer at the New Politics Leadership Academy, a non-profit dedicated to recruiting and developing alumni of long-term service programs--both military and civilian--to run for political office. Previously, he served as Vice President of Leadership Development at City Year, the Boston-based AmeriCorps program focused on addressing the nation's high school drop-out crisis. Max received his Doctorate of Education in Human Development and Psychology from the Harvard Graduate School of Education in 2005; where his studies focused on civic leadership education. An alumnus of four different service programs, he has completed two years of service in Israel and led service programs in Ghana, Honduras, and Ukraine. He serves on the board of the International Leadership Association, and his writings about leadership have been featured in Fast Company, Harvard Business Review, Huffington Post, and The Washington Post. He lives with his wife and two children in the suburbs of Boston, MA.
