misc_none 10:00 AM  -  2:00 PM Living Library     Tell a Friend

Welcome to the Morse Institute Library's Living Library!

A Living Library is based on the idea that every person has a story to tell. In this library, instead of borrowing books, you borrow people to engage in meaningful conversation. Each one of our "books" has a unique and interesting perspective, and a lot can be learned from sitting down with someone who has a different story to tell.

What is a Living Library?

In a Living Library, our books tell a story. Literally!

During a Living Library event, you can check out one of our Living Books to learn more about their lifestyle, ask them questions about what it is like to live in their shoes, and embrace the differences and similarities that make us all human. A Living Library is a way for people to reach out and connect with individuals in their community that they might not normally engage with. Visitors to a library have an opportunity during a planned event to borrow Living Books and to engage in conversation with the books.

Living Libraries promote tolerance, celebrate differences and encourage understanding of people who come from varied cultural or lifestyle backgrounds.

We hope that by sitting down with someone different from ourselves, we will learn what it is like to walk in another's shoes while gaining insight and perspective into our own lives and community.

The Living Library at the Morse Institute Library will take place April 14th, 2018 from 10am-2pm. Books can be reserved ahead of time (more info on registration to come) and for 15 minute blocks. Upon arrival, readers should report to the check in counter where a librarian may assist him/her in checking out a book. Sample questions will be provided to help guide conversation.

Want to get involved? Become a Book!

Would you like to tell your story? We are currently looking for people to act as Living "Books" at our event! Living Books are volunteers who are willing to share their unique stories with others in a safe environment during our event. We hope to find a variety of "books," focusing especially on people whose stories tend not to be heard in mainstream society, whose lives and experiences are frequently stereotyped, misunderstood, or simply interesting. Titles might include (but are certainly not limited to) people who belong to different racial, ethnic, or religious groups; people who have overcome adversity; people who have had unusual careers and life experiences; and people who have achieved noteworthy successes. If you would like to volunteer to be one of our Living Books, please click here to apply. Applications will be accepted 2/1 until 2/19.
