rec_paintpalette02 6:00 PM  -  8:00 PM Abstract Impressionism - Blaine Arthur Cota Exhibit Opening Reception Remind Me about this Event   Tell a Friend

Exhibiting Tuesday, May 2-Saturday, May 27

Opening Reception Wed., May 3, 6-8 p.m.

Blaine Arthur Cota was born in 1923 in Vermont where he developed a childhood interest in art. Coming of age, he attended Yale University, earning an MFA degree in 1951. He taught art and exhibited throughout Connecticut, mostly during the 1950’s-60’s, and had pieces in many prestigious collections. From the mid-1960’s on, he devoted his energy to founding a non-profit living museum called Heritance House in Litchfield, CT. He passed away in June 2006.

Mr. Cota was influenced by the Abstract Impressionist movement and primarily by the great Picasso. Blaine preferred to “utilize my intellect to produce mental visual images”; it was his way to “allow the artist to explore far more than what the eye tells us.”

This exhibit is free and open to the public. Prints and original works will be available for purchase.

nat_moon_full 12:30 PM  -  2:00 PM Introduction to Mindfulness Meditation Remind Me about this Event   Tell a Friend

These monthly classes will present the foundations of a formal mindfulness practice. Through modern scientific research, this type of meditation has been shown to have many potential health benefits- both physical and mental- and has therefore become quite popular recently, though it has been around a very long time. An overview of the history of the practice, as well as a look at some of the recent studies on it, will be part of these classes, but most of the time will be spent developing the capacity to sit and focus, to notice but not be carried away by what arises, and to hone our capacity to come back when we find ourselves distracted. The classes will cover mindfulness of breath, of body, of thoughts, and of emotions, and will consist of some discussions and some guided meditations. The goal is to get you started on developing a personal practice of your own, that you will continue long after the class is over.  It’s way more fun than it might sound—try it and see! Additional sessions on January 5, February 2 and March 9. April 13 Session Canceled! New Sessions Added:  May 4 and June 15th!

        There are 2 spaces available.

We are delighted to present the 2nd Annual Concert Series this spring to celebrate Agnes and her love of music. All concerts are free and held in the Spicer Reading Room on the second floor of the Library.

Join us to hear the 'Survivors Swing Band' and enjoy an evening of the great old tunes of the 1920's through 1940's. Let the Survivors Swing Band get your toes a-tappin' and fingers snappin' in the process! Do you want to dance, too? Get up and go for it!

The Survivors Swing Band is a 7-piece professional jazz band based in Connecticut, that plays the classic melodies from an era gone by--hot tunes and soothing ballads of the Swing Era-- plus many of the wonderful melodies from the two decades that followed.

Doors open at 5:30 p.m. and music begins at 6:00 p.m.

nat_moon_full 12:30 PM  -  2:00 PM Introduction to Mindfulness Meditation Remind Me about this Event   Tell a Friend
