    Making Sense of the American Civil War, a series of four conversations exploring various aspects of the Civil War experience. Discussion leader is Bob Forrant, professor of history at UMass Lowell. The discussions meet September 18, and October 2, 16, and 30. Registration is mandatory and, once you register, you are registered for all four sessions. Please contact Beth Safford at 978-686-4080, ext. 12, to receive your first of three required texts. Making Sense of the American Civil War, a reading and discussion series, has been made possible through a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities through the Mass Humanities and the American Library Association. Administered by the Worcester Public Library.

    Dr. Ira Spar, a member of the Society of Civil War Surgeons, will present a discussion on the Life and times in a Civil War Hospital. He will also cover how the returning Civil War Union Soldiers received health care through the auspices of the Federal government. Single payer universal health care was established for them at that time. It is a metaphor for today's health care system. He is the author of a new book, "New Haven's Civil War Hospital which is due out soon.

Book Summary: This is a picture book biography of Mary Edwards Walker. She was unconventional for her time. Mary Walker was one of the first women doctors in the country, she was a suffragist, and she wore pants! And when the Civil War struck, she took to the battlefields in a modified Union uniform as a commissioned doctor. For her service she became the only woman ever to earn the Medal of Honor!
