Ansel Adams — Environmentalist and Photographer

Thursday, Feb. 9th from 6-7pm

Join Lance Hidy for a slide presentation about photographer Ansel Adams and his long career starting at age 14 in Yosemite with a Kodak Box Brownie  camera. Find out about his work with the Sierra Club, The National Park Service, and his work in the environmental movement of the 1960s. The presenter, Lance Hidy knew Ansel Adams personally and has designed eight books featuring his photography.

Ansel Adams (1902–1984) was the most honored American photographer of the twentieth century. Through the exhibition and publication of his work, his writings, and his leadership in the Sierra Club, Adams was also a prescient and highly effective voice in the fight to preserve America’s remaining wilderness. Adams was arguably the most influential photographic teacher of the twentieth century as well, in large part thanks to his bestselling how-to books. In 1980 he was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President Jimmy Carter. The citation reads:

At one with the power of the American landscape, and renowned for the patient skill and timeless beauty of his work, photographer Ansel Adams has been visionary in his efforts to preserve the country’s wild and scenic areas, both on ?lm and on Earth. Drawn to the beauty of nature’s monuments, he is regarded by environmentalists as a monument himself, and by photographers as a national institution. It is through his foresight and fortitude that so much of America has been saved for future Americans.

Lance Hidy

Professor of Art

Lance Hidy studied art and design at Yale University. He was co-founder and art director of David R. Godine, Publisher before starting his own design firm. He expanded his practice to include posters, illustration, and photography, incorporating his love of printmaking with his training in letterforms. He was a typographic consultant to Adobe Systems, for whom he designed the typeface Penumbra, a family of sixteen fonts. Ansel Adams chose Hidy to design YOSEMITE AND THE RANGE OF LIGHT, the last book of Adams’ career. After Adams’ death Hidy designed seven more books and two apps for the Ansel Adams Trust and Little, Brown. Hidy served as art director of Harvard Business Review, has designed three U. S. postage stamps, and specializes in corporate identity and logo design. In addition to running his design and illustration studio, Hidy’s writing on design history has been widely published. He is currently a Professor of Art and Accessible Media Specialist at Northern Essex Community College in Haverhill, Massachusetts.

Simply Sweet Storytime offers an opportunity for children to hear stories from classic children’s literature as well as new additions to our collection. The children are able to practice developmental skills, such as listening and taking turns, in a warm and welcoming environment, as well as to meet new people and maybe make a friend (children and parents/caregivers alike!). After we sing a song and share a story or two, we’ll use our fine motor skills to create a simple craft. Online Registration is Required.
