misc_none 6:30 PM  -  7:30 PM The Mining Boom with Jim Cunningham Remind Me about this Event   Tell a Friend

The Newbury Mining Boom

Tuesday, May 23 from 6:30-7:30pm –

Join Jim Cunningham, a descendent of the first settlers of Newbury and lifelong Newbury resident, for a presentation on the mining boom in the Newbury area. Starting as early as 1697 many minerals have been discovered through the area, including Gold and Silver. During the 1870s silver was discovered in a pasture along Scotland Road – the Chipman Mine. By 1873, land values in the area had jumped skyward. One newspaper article, published as far away as Colorado, reported the discovery of silver in Newbury, describing the crowds of people drawn into town by the promise of silver and filling the saloons and dance halls in Newburyport. Please register below for this event.

An Evening of Jazz in the Garden
to celebrate Adult Summer Reading & Suzanne's Retirement!

Suzanne Monier is retiring from the Circulation Desk here at the NTL after 23 years of service, but also, our adult summer reading program is kicking off with live jazz and light refreshments after hours on June 9th from 5-8pm. It will be held outside by the back garden, weather permitting. More details to come, but you can already reserve your spot on our online calendar - seating will be limited.

Here's what's happening:
We're throwing a combination party that's part Adult Summer Reading Kickoff, and part Retirement Soiree for Suzanne. We will be registering folks for our Adult Summer Reading program - this year's prize is a Kindle Paperwhite! You will be able to pick up your bingo cards at this time. During the festivities, you will enjoy light refreshments as you listen to a few hours of live jazz entertainment by Andy Brewster & Friends. We'll be sitting out back by the garden, weather permitting.

Here's where it'll be:
NTL, 0 Lunt Street, Byfield, MA 01922 (outside by the back garden)

Here's when it starts and ends.
5pm - 8pm on Friday, June 9, 2017

Please RSVP by registering by May 26th if you can attend by clicking below.

lib_sherlock_holmes.GIF 6:00 PM  -  7:30 PM Author Visit: Stephen Kurkjian on MASTER THIEVES Remind Me about this Event   Tell a Friend

Join us for an evening with author, Stephen Kurkjian, who wrote MASTER THIEVES: The Boston Gangsters Who Pulled Off the World’s Greatest Art Heist!

Critics have praised MASTER THIEVES: The Boston Gangsters Who Pulled Off the World’s Greatest Art Heist as the most complete account of the 1990 theft from the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum in Boston. Stephen Kurkjian, the author, is a Pulitzer Prize-winning investigative reporter for The Boston Globe who was the newspaper’s lead reporter on the story. His book provides a dramatic narrative of the actual theft in which two men dressed as police officers were able to trick their way into the museum after hours and make off with priceless masterpieces including Vermeer’s The Concert and two large paintings by Rembrandt including Storm on the Sea of Galilee, his only seascape. More than a quarter century later, none of the 13 pieces that were stolen in all have been recovered and no one ever arrested. Kurkjian’s narrative is rich in details of the actual theft and what led up to it; the several suspects whom the FBI has focused its investigation on and interviews with them, and a possible missing motive for the historic robbery, to ransom a leading mob figure out of jail. Lastly, Kurkjian calls attention to the museum’s – and its founder’s – rich history and how authorities could use that history to rally the public to help in the recovery.
