http://downloads.newtonfreelibrary.net/programs/EK%20images/12_2016/wx12_11_Concert_Stephen_Porter%20by%20Kathy%20Chapman%202015.jpgPianist Stephen Porter will return to the library to give a recital of solo works by Bach and Chopin, followed by the magnificent Debussy and Poulenc sonatas for cello and piano with special guest cellist Kate Kayaian. These moving works were written in France during the periods of the two World Wars. Mr. Porter has appeared as a soloist in London, Paris, Sarajevo, Istanbul and Rio de Janeiro, and Ms. Kayaian has performed regularly with such acclaimed ensembles as Boston Modern Orchestra Project, Sound Icon, New England String Ensemble and Odyssey Opera.

Bill Wise is a composer of klezmer and other genres. He has a CD titled Y2klez. Joanne Baker is a middle school English teacher at JCS, Boston's Jewish Community Day School, as well as the director of their student klezmer band, The Grateful Klez. They will perform memorable tunes such as Hine Ma Tov, Mi Y'malel, Oy Hanuka, some of Bill’s compositions including Delanie's Waltz and Odessa Mama, and Shalom Aleichem Waltz by David Shneyer, among others.

http://downloads.newtonfreelibrary.net/programs/EK%20images/12_2016/wx12_18_Concert_Anna_Arazi_by_Alexandra_Wimley.jpgIsraeli classical pianist Anna Arazi will perform Robert Schumann’s Kreisleriana Op. 16, Verdina Shlonsky’s Five Sketches and Sergei Prokofiev’s Sonata No. 4 Op. 29 in C-Minor. An active performer, speaker and educator, Ms. Arazi has won notable competitions including the 2015 Dallas International Piano Competition and 2014 American Protégé International Piano competition, among others. She has performed with the Sinfonietta Beer-Sheba and Boston University Symphony orchestras, and recently had her Carnegie Hall debut. Ms. Arazi received her doctoral degree from Boston University in 2015, supported by the honorable Richmond scholarship.

Chinese Dulcimer Guzheng Youth Band: Join us for a special concert in celebration of Chinese Lunar New Year 2017, the year of the Chicken. Students from the Boston Art School for Chinese Music will perform. Ping Li founded the Boston Art School for Chinese Music in 2000. Since then she has taught both Chinese and American students. She has been a professional yangqin (Chinese dulcimer) and guzheng performer for almost 30 years. Info: pinglimusic.com.
