In this four-session workshop participants will learn the principles of acquiring a new language, how adults learn, how cross-cultural considerations affect a person's ability to adapt to new ways of saying and doing things, and a variety of ELL teaching techniques that tutors can use with their learners.

This workshop is open to new and current tutors in the Newton Free Library's ELL & Literacy program.

Coming to America: Home of the Brave by Katherine Applegate is a free class for adult intermediate to advanced adult English Language Learners. Kek, the main character in Home of the Brave, comes from Africa where he lived with his mother, father and brother.  But only he and his mother have survived.  Now she’s missing and Kek has been sent to a new home. As he waits for word of his mother’s fate, Kek weathers the tough Minnesota winter by finding warmth in his new friendships, strength in his memories and belief in his new country.

  • Short weekly homework assignments.

Work in small groups to plan a virtual trip to a region in New England.

Coming to America: Home of the Brave by Katherine Applegate is a free class for adult intermediate to advanced adult English Language Learners. Kek, the main character in Home of the Brave, comes from Africa where he lived with his mother, father and brother.  But only he and his mother have survived.  Now she’s missing and Kek has been sent to a new home. As he waits for word of his mother’s fate, Kek weathers the tough Minnesota winter by finding warmth in his new friendships, strength in his memories and belief in his new country.
