The class will select a different topic each class, e.g. psychology, technology, music, children, self-improvement, health care, and world politics. This is a great way to listen to many different excellent English speakers, challenge your discussion skills, and expose yourself to new ideas.

Conversations about Travel is a free class for intermediate to advanced adult ESL learners. We will read and discuss short stories about travel and exploration by travel writers Charles Kiralt, Nellie Bly, Susan Spano and others.  We will also create a basic checklist for packing and learn to use articles, tour books, and websites to learn about places to visit.  Our focus in trip planning will be on the Northeast, but our readings will cover travel from all around the world.

In this four-session workshop participants will learn the principles of acquiring a new language, how adults learn, how cross-cultural considerations affect a person's ability to adapt to new ways of saying and doing things, and a variety of ESL teaching techniques that tutors can use with their learners.

This workshop is open to new and current tutors in the Newton Free Library's Legacy for Literacy program.
