    Get ready for another 10-week Wise Walk program beginning September 1st. Enjoy a walking program that benefits your health and mental well-being and reduces your chances of illness. Participants will meet with Wise Walk leader, Mary Jean Voigt, at the library to receive information and handouts, then will go to North Park to walk for 30 to 45 minutes. For the remaining nine weeks, the group will meet each Tuesday at Pie Traynor Field in North Park to walk together and enjoy the fall weather. Some like to walk fast and some like to walk at a more leisurely pace. You'll soon find others in the group who go at YOUR pace. Water and snacks will be provided. Registration is required for this adult program. You may register online, in person at the adult reference desk or by calling 412-366-8100, extension 113.

    The Tuesday Night Book Group will discuss Blood Will Out: The True Story of a Murder, a Mystery, and a Masquerade by Walter Kirn. In 1998, Kirn?then an aspiring novelist ?set out on a peculiar, fateful errand: to personally deliver a crippled hunting dog from his home in Montana to the New York apartment of Clark Rockefeller, who had adopted the dog over the Internet. Thus began a 15-year relationship that drew Kirn deep into the fun-house world of an outlandish son of privilege who ultimately would be unmasked as a brazen impostor, child kidnapper, and brutal murderer. In October we will discuss Savage Harvest: A Tale of Cannibals, Colonialism, and Michael Rockefeller's Tragic Quest by Carl Hoffman.

    WILD TALES-A Black Comedy from Argentina (122 min) Inequality, injustice and the demands of the world we live in cause stress and depression for many people. Some of them, however, explode. That is the case in this film, a series of six wild tales. Each film starts at very simple. Circumstances occur where the main character is wronged in some way and from there things escalate. If you like the stories or Roald Dahl, you will feel at home here. If you like comedy taken to the absurdity, this if for you. The movie was produced by world famous director, Pedro Almodovar. It was nominated for an Academy Award. Though it didn’t win, it has won 23 other awards along with 48 nominations. So come join us. No reservation is required. Refreshments will be served.

    Northland Library is pleased to sponsor another 10-week series of Tai Chi classes, to be held at the Activities Center at Blueberry Hill Park on Monday mornings from 11:00 a.m. to 12 noon beginning on September 14. Vincenza Furst, certified Tai Chi instructor, will lead this popular series. Tai Chi is a centuries-old Chinese practice designed to exercise the mind and body through a series of gentle, flowing postures. Tai Chi can improve strength, balance, flexibility and coordination. It may also improve heart function and decrease blood pressure. Whether you are a beginner to Tai Chi or have practiced the art before, you are welcome to join the group for some beneficial exercise.     Eastern Canada (52 minutes) - This month we travel to the three eastern provinces of Canada - Quebec, Nova Scotia and Newfoundland. We'll see a lot of Old World charm as well as some beautiful natural scenery. In Montreal we'll visit a half dozen of the cities neighborhoods to find out why they are so unique. We'll also tour the Notre Dame Cathedral as well as Rue St Paul, one of the oldest streets in North America. Quebec City is famous for its Old World Flavor. We'll also see two of its iconic landmarks, the Citadel as well as the Chateau Frontenac. The Cirque du Soleil is from here. In Nova Scotia, we'll visit its capital, Halifax. We'll also tour the famous Peggy's Cove lighthouse. In Lunenburg we'll get acquainted with the houses known for the Lunenberg "bump". In Newfoundland we'll go porpoise and whale watching while we try to dodge icebergs. So come join us. No registration is required. Refreshments will be served.

    In THAT DAY THE RABBI LEFT TOWN, the last of the 12-book Rabbi Small mystery series by Harry Kemelman, Rabbi Small has resigned after serving his congregation for 25 years and accepted a college teaching position. When an elderly professor disappears and is later found dead of an apparent heart attack, Rabbi Small believes it might be a case of murder. There are already more than 7,000 solar installations in Pennsylvania. Many people choose solar energy for the environmental benefits and others choose it to save thousands of dollars over the lifetime of the system. Ross Township is partnering with non-profit SmartPower as part of the Solarize Allegheny project, funded by the Heinz Endowment to expand the use of solar energy in Allegheny County. Sharon Pillar, vice-president of SmartPower and project director for Solarize Allegheny will describe the benefits of solar energy and help you decide if your home or business is good for solar.     Free Practice SAT Subject Test available to anyone interested. This is a great opportunity to find out where a student is in terms of academic achievement of a particular subject. Also is an opportunity for those who want to practice for Real SAT Subject Tests in October and November. Limit of one test per individual. Grading and basic analysis of the test performance will be done on the spot. More detailed analysis can be made available by Complete Learning Academy. To register, it is necessary to contact Wontaek before September 17th with information on which is the interested subject, and what workbooks the student has already seen. It starts out with a German doctor who is moving to a new practice. He follows a family who is heading in the same direction. The family welcomes the doctor into their home unaware that he is the notorious war criminal, Josef Mengele. The doctor takes a special interest in the young daughter who is a bit behind in developing. He also helps the father start a business. He also helps the mother with her newborn infants. Throughout the film, you have an uneasy feeling about the doctor. Is he really helping the family, or are they being used for another of his experiments? So come join us. No reservation is required.     Get ready for another 10-week Wise Walk program beginning September 1st. Enjoy a walking program that benefits your health and mental well-being and reduces your chances of illness. Participants will meet with Wise Walk leader, Mary Jean Voigt, at Pie Traynor Field in North Park to walk together for about 30 to 45 minutes for a total of nine weeks. Some like to walk fast and some like to walk at a more leisurely pace, but either way you can enjoy the Fall weather. You'll soon find others in the group who go at YOUR pace.     Speakers: Debby Rabold, Local Historian and Amy Steele, Executive Director Northland Public Library The North Hills Road Show is a 90-minute presentation featuring photos that depict the evolution of areas in McCandless, Bradford woods, Franklin Park, Ross and Marshall townships from as early as 1890. The speakers will be showing the development of the North Hills from the point of view of road projects that were done when this area was still very rural. They will show landmarks, buildings and how our community has evolved into what it is today as depicted on the library’s local history website at www.northlandlocalhistory.org.     SLOVAKIA (65 minutes) This month we will celebrate Oktoberfest by traveling to Slovakia. We'll travel back in time to learn about the culture of the area as well as what foods they eat. In Slovakia's capital we'll visit its capital, Bratislava where we'll visit it's "White House" We'll also see the whole city from the castle that overlooks the city. In Slovakia's oldest city, Nitra, we learn about how this city was once the cradle of Christianity as we learn about St Cyril and Methodius. One fof the most visited sites is Bojnice Castle. It is a fairy tale castle with its own caves underneath it. At Orava Castle we'll take a ghoulish night tour. This is where the film Nosferatu was filmed. In eastern Slovakia, we'll visit the numerous small Russian wooden churches, built with no nails. In Medzilaborce, we'll visit the Andy Warhol museum. The Warhol family is from here. Lastly we'll travel up the second highest mountain in the Tatras, to see a most spectacular view as we look down upon the clouds. So come join us. No reservation is required for this free program. Refreshments will be served.

    Northland Library is pleased to sponsor another 10-week series of Tai Chi classes, to be held at the Activities Center at Blueberry Hill Park on Monday mornings from 11:00 a.m. to 12 noon beginning on September 14. Vincenza Furst, certified Tai Chi instructor, will lead this popular series. Tai Chi is a centuries-old Chinese practice designed to exercise the mind and body through a series of gentle, flowing postures. Tai Chi can improve strength, balance, flexibility and coordination. It may also improve heart function and decrease blood pressure. Whether you are a beginner to Tai Chi or have practiced the art before, you are welcome to join the group for some beneficial exercise. Preregistration is required.

Participants will meet with Wise Walk leader, Mary Jean Voigt, at Pie Traynor Field in North Park to walk together for about 30 to 45 minutes for a total of nine weeks. Some like to walk fast and some like to walk at a more leisurely pace, but either way you can enjoy the Fall weather. You'll soon find others in the group who go at YOUR pace.
