COMING HOME- A Romance from China (109 min)

Lu Yanshi and Feng Wanya are a devoted couple who are forced to separate when Lu is arrested and sent to a Labor camp during China’s Cultural Revolution. Lu escapes. However, he is captured before he can see her.  In the struggle to capture Lu, Feng’s head is injured.  After the revolution, Lu is released.  He comes home to find that his wife has amnesia and remembers little of her past or present.  Unable to recognize her husband as he stands right in front of him, she continues to patiently wait for his return.  Lu then tries everything in his power to get Feng to recognize him. The emotional jolt of the final scene is shattering and not an image not easily forgotten. Elegant and wrenching, Coming Home is a quiet, haunting masterpiece.

Being the primary caregiver for a loved one can be a very difficult task, and we often forget to take care of ourselves in the process. During this six week program, caregivers will develop a wealth of self-care tools to: reduce personal stress; change negative self-talk; communicate their needs to family members and healthcare or service providers; communicate more effectively in challenging situations; recognize the messages in their emotions, deal with difficult feelings; and make tough caregiving decisions.

This course will be led by Kelly Covone-Henning, Aging Educator and Community Resource Coordinator at the
Aging Institute of UPMC Senior Services and the University of Pittsburgh, and Michelle Rockwell, Lead Link Coordinator for Pennsylvania Link to Aging and Disability Resource Center.

Free Speech and Free Expression: What You Can Say, Paint, Wear and Display—And Not.
Thursday, August 11th at 7:00 PM

Join us to learn about the First Amendment and find out what freedom of speech and expression really means!  These guarantees, enshrined in our Constitution, form the foundation of a vibrant democracy.  Without these rights, other fundamental rights would wither away. The fight to protect these rights has been at the core of the ACLU’s mission since the organization was founded in 1920. The organization’s work quickly spread to combating censorship, securing the right to assembly, and promoting free speech in schools.

About the Presenter: Brenda Lee Green joined the ACLU as a high school senior and has maintained a three decade relationship with the ACLU of Pennsylvania as a member, volunteer, donor, and board member. Most of her work with the ACLU involves fighting censorship.

Registration is required for this adult program and begins on July15th. You may register online, in person at the adult reference desk or by calling 412-366-8100, extension 113.

The novel takes the reader on an unexpected journey through Victorian London, Japan as its civil war crumbles long-standing traditions, and beyond. Blending historical events with flights of fancy, it opens doors to a strange and magical past.

Northland Public Library Foundation is hungry for more mobile cuisine with our new food truck schedule, Tasty Trucks @ Northland. Our mouths are watering already for Thursday, August 18, when Bacon on the Fly (bacon!) comes to Northland. The truck will be in the Library's upper parking lot from noon-6pm, bringing with them tempters like Bacon Mac N' Cheese Taco.

Bacon on the Fly accepts cash and all major credits cards, and will be open until 6:00pm or as supplies last given the variability of patron support and limited storage capacity of food trucks. For up-to-the-minute information, please call the library at 412-366-8100 or check our Facebook and Twitter pages. A portion of the sales benefits Northland Public Library Foundation which provides financial support to the library through community fundraising.

Our food truck schedule, Tasty Trucks @ Northland, continues with:

Sept. 1: Mac & Gold Truck
Sept. 15: Wood Fired Flatbreads

Mark your calendars for TT@N every first and third Thursday and enjoy delicious foods while helping your Library!

WINSTON CHURCHILL AND FRANKLIN DELANO ROOSEVELT: FROM GRAND ALLIANCE TO DEAR FRIENDS

This is a story of one of the most important friendship of the 20th Century. Born during World War II at a time of great peril, nourished by extensive secret correspondence, personal meetings, and conferences, the friendship between Franklin Delano Roosevelt and Winston Churchill forever changed history and shaped the lives of hundreds of millions of people. Like all close relationships it was not free of disagreements, yet these two men, especially Churchill, never let their slights or disagreements break the bond forged in the crucible of War to defeat Nazism.

THE FOOL-A Drama from Russia (116 min)

The tone of the movie starts with a hellish opening scene, which leads to the villain be scalded by steam after the pipes burst.  Dima is the crew chief of a maintenance team that has come to fix it. What he sees is cause for concern.  A huge crack spiraling up 10 stories is visibly seen on both the inside and the outside of the building.  He notices that the building is also tilting at a ten degree angle, leading him to believe the building, with its 820 inhabitants, will collapse in the next 24 hours.  He immediately speaks to the mayor and they cabinet who act upon it.  Or do they?   This movie is about how corrupt the Russian bureaucracy is.  Dima is labeled a fool because he believes that he can make a change. Dima gives you enough hope for the Russians, although this movie certainly won’t. No reservation required.  Join us on Wednesday, September 14 at 1:30 pm. Refreshments will be served. Join author and historian Thomas White as he explores the history and cultural meaning behind some of our region’s supernatural legends. Hear the story of whispering dead beneath the Black Cross, the phantoms of Pittsburgh’s steel mills, and the ghosts and cults that stalk Blue Mist Road. Learn the truth about the curse at the old Quaker Church, Judge Reddick’s contest with the Devil, the Witch of the Monongahela, and many other spooky tales. White is the university archivist and an adjunct professor of history at Duquesne University and an adjunct professor of history at La Roche College. He is the author of 10 books on Pennsylvania legends, folklore and ghost stories including: Ghosts of Southwestern Pennsylvania, Legends and Lore of Western Pennsylvania, Haunted Roads of Western Pennsylvania, and Witches of Pennsylvania: Occult History and Lore. Registration is required for this adult program.
