Our feature film this month is the drama "The Forgotten Kingdom". This award winning independent film captures the incredible beauty of the Lesotho countryside. The film is about a young man, Atang, who now lives in the urban city of Johannesburg, but was born in the neighboring country of Lesotho. He has been in Johannesburg so long he has forgotten his past. As he grows up, he becomes estranged from his father. When his father dies, his only wish is to be buried in his ancestral home in Lesotho. As Atung fulfills his father’s wish, he is stirred by memories of his youth. He reconnects with a childhood friend, who is now a school teacher. Through her and the native people, Atang is drawn toward the mystical beauty and hardships of the people and land that he has forgotten. This film is a meditative tale with compelling performances. The story and the rugged beauty of Lesotho will linger with you after the credits roll. So come join us. reservation required. Refreshments will be served.

It could have been a grim tale, but in Winterson’s first novel, winner of England's Whitbread Prize, the author has mastered both comedy and tragedy in telling the story of a young girl triumphantly coming into her own. Bring your brown bag. Northland provides a beverage. Our discussion begins at noon. No registration is necessary.

This month we are travelling to Bolivia in South America, to visit the last Indian country in the Americas. Bolivia is a landlocked country high in the Andes Mountains. Our first stop will be La Paz, the highest capital city in the world at 11,975 ft. Our next stop will be Sucre, which is Bolivia’s other capital. Sucre is rich in both culture and history. It is known as the “Athens of America” as well as the “White Town”. Here will tour the Casa de Libertad, where the revolution for Independence first started. In Sipe Sipe we’ll witness a most interesting New Year’s festival. Potosi was once the largest, most affluent and populated city in all of the Americas due to its silver production. We’ll tour one of the mines as well as the Casa Real where silver coins were minted. In Uyuni we’ll visit an “open air” train cemetery as well as the world’s largest “salt desert” at over 4600 square miles. Here we’ll also visit one of the world’s strangest hotels – all made of salt. So come join us. No reservation is required. Refreshments will be served.

(POSTPONED from January 26)-Last year on Channel 4 News, Dr. Paul Lieber, MD, of Rehabilitation and Pain Specialists, explained in detail the non-surgical, regenerative procedures used by the physicians in his practice to treat painful joint injuries and degenerative conditions, such as osteoarthritis. The procedures utilize a patient’s own stem cells or blood platelets to help heal damaged tissues, tendons, ligaments, cartilage, spinal disc, or bone. Previously used primarily by athletes who wished to heal from their injuries and pain as quickly as possible, the non-surgical treatment has proved highly successful in returning patients to a functional lifestyle. The procedure may reverse some of the arthritic process and help many people avoid a major surgery. Hear Dr. Lieber explain this promising pain treatment and ask questions about the ways in which these specialists help restore movement and mobility to their patients.Registration is required for this adult program. You may register online, in person at the adult reference desk or by calling 412-366-8100, extension 113.

Join us for a fascinating evening with John L. Haigh, Former Chief Steward on Air Force One. In September 1979, John Haigh was selected as a permanent member of the Air Force One flight crew and served on flights with heads of states from Great Britain, China, Germany, and Turkey and accompanied the Apollo 17 astronauts as they took a 33-day goodwill tour around the world. He later served as Chief Steward during the latter part of President Reagan’s second term of office and three and a half years of President George Bush, Sr.’s first term. In Mr. Haigh’s own words, “it truly was a privilege and pleasure to serve the Presidents aboard Air Force One.” With photographs and intriguing stories, Mr. Haigh will describe those flights, both historic and dangerous, as he became well acquainted with the men who served in the highest office of our country. His book, Air Force One: An Honor, Privilege, And Pleasure To Serve will be available for those who wish to purchase a copy. Registration is required for this adult program.
