The LUNCHBOX A Romance from India (105 min.) In the movie, The Lunchbox, Ila wants to add some spice to her marriage by trying out a new recipe out on her neglectful husband. Mumbai is famous for its efficient lunchbox delivery system. However this time it is inadvertently sent to Saajan, a lonely man on the verge of retirement. When there is no response to the meal by the husband, Ila sends a note in the following day’s lunchbox. This begins a series of lunchbox notes. The mere comfort of communicating with a stranger relaxes Ila. The notes become little confessions about one another’s loneliness. As this “virtual” relationship increases , it could jeopardize their realities. Winner of 19 awards and 32 other nominations, this movie is sure to spice things up. Come join us. misc_none 7:00 PM  -  9:00 PM The Affordable Care Act-Year Two: Enrolling, Renewing and Using Your Coverage* Remind Me about this Event   Tell a Friend
Contact: Adult Services Reference Desk   412-366-8100x113   npladultserv@einetwork.net
While the Affordable Care Act has put health insurance within reach for millions of Americans, many remain uninsured and unsure of how to find quality, affordable coverage. The newly insured are learning the language of health insurance -- working to understand terms like: deductible, co-insurance and out-of-pocket maximum -- and how to make their new coverage work for them. And those who opted not to enroll during the first open enrollment period are considering their options in year two, wondering what financial assistance is available to reduce monthly premiums and how to connect with unbiased information about navigating the process. The Pennsylvania Health Access Network (PHAN) a non-profit, non-partisan health care coalition that works to expand coverage to the uninsured, can help answer these questions and offer one-on-one support to people planning to enroll, renew or just better understand their health coverage. Join Erin Ninehauser, PHAN representative, on Wednesday, September 10 at 7:00 p.m. for an in-depth, interactive presentation on how health insurance works in the post-ACA landscape. Come with questions, leave with a solid understanding of your options and how to manage your care. Please register online or by contacting the Adult Service Reference Desk at 412-366-8100 ext. 113. A repeat of the program will be held on Monday, September 15, at 7:00 p.m.

misc_none 7:00 PM  -  9:00 PM 10 Keys To Healthy Aging* Remind Me about this Event   Tell a Friend
Contact: Adult Services Reference Desk   412-366-8100x113   npladultserv@einetwork.net
The older adult population in the United States is growing rapidly and is expected to double over the next 30 years. The rapid increase in the number of older adults is influencing many factors in all age groups and could result in drastic increases in health care costs, dependency and disability. Here in Allegheny County, the second largest population area of older adults in the country, the University of Pittsburgh’s Center for Aging and Population Health has done extensive research in identifying ways to optimize active and healthy life expectancy and limit the disabling effects of age-related chronic disease. A major accomplishment of the Center has been the development of “10 Keys to Healthy Aging,” a program designed to help members of the community learn about what people can do while they are healthy to prevent sickness and disability. Join us as Elizabeth Rodgers, doctoral student in the Graduate School of Public Health at the University of Pittsburgh, explains these important 10 Keys. After her presentation, she welcomes questions and discussion about the ways in which older adults can take steps to prevent illness and look forward to healthy and active aging. Please register online or by contacting the Adult Services Reference Desk at 412-366-8100 ext. 113.

Contact: Adult Services Department   412-366-8100x113   npladultserv@einetwork.net
September’s meeting of the Second Friday Book Group kicks off the fall season with its annual salad luncheon followed by an informal discussion of Karen Joy Fowler’s novel, We Are All Completely Besides Ourselves. Bring a small salad or other luncheon item to share with others. Northland will provide a beverage. Karen Joy Fowler’s unusual novel, We Are All Completely Beside Ourselves, raises many interesting questions about what is human, what is animal, and what sets humans apart from their fellow primates. The narrator, Rosemary, has been raised from infancy with Fern, a chimpanzee, as her sister. When Rosemary is 5, Fern disappears, and Rosemary’s life is changed forever. Fowler weaves a fascinating tale of loving but fallible people whose well-intentioned actions lead to unexpected consequences. We will read Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury in October. Please join us. No registration is required.

Sam Hazo, Pittsburgh’s treasured poet, returns to Northland Library to share more of his poetry and some of his newly published work, spoken in his unmistakable style. Founder and director if the International Poetry Forum, Pennsylvania’s first state poet, author of fiction, essays, poetry and plays, professor emeritus at Duquesne University, award-winning Dr. Hazo is one of the most compelling and enduring poets of his generation. Recently published, Sexes: The Marriage Dialogues reveals Hazo’s attuned ear as he picks up insights, misunderstandings and surprising moments that are a part of married life. Also recently published, And The Time Is: Poems, 1958-2013, is a collection of his works over the years. His poetry subjects have ranged from the political scene to the local, from amusing small moments to the wider themes of mortality and love. Sit back and listen as Dr. Hazo discusses the ability of poetry to capture the essence of an event and recites for our pleasure some of his recent and earlier poems.     The group kicks off the fall season with its annual salad luncheon followed by an informal discussion of Karen Joy Fowler’s novel, We Are All Completely Besides Ourselves. No registration required. In October, the group will discuss Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury.

Imagine moving to a foreign country and trying to go about ordinary, everyday tasks without being able to read or write the language of that country. Imagine trying to find a job if you only know a bare minimum of words in that language. Imagine trying to attend school in a foreign country without understanding the language. Every day, in the North Hills area, immigrants arrive who are eager to learn and eager to contribute to society and become American citizens, but they need assistance in learning to read and write in English. Some immigrants arrive in our country with fluent skills in English but their family members lack the language skills that will allow them to thrive in our society. Northland Public Library recognizes the absolute value of literacy skills in the life of its community and partners with the Greater Pittsburgh Literacy Council by providing free space for GPLC tutors who teach English as a Second Language. On Saturday, October 11 and Saturday, October 18, the Greater Pittsburgh Literacy Council and Northland Public Library will co-sponsor a free volunteer tutor training workshop at the library. If you would like to share the gift of literacy by helping an adult in our community with English language skills, please contact Anita at 412-393-7645 or at acohen@gplc.org for more information and/or to register.
