Busting the Myth about College Admission and Preparations

This is a seminar for any students and parents thinking about going to a college, presented by Complete Learning Academy. There are much myth surrounding the college admissions and preparations. CLA hopes to show why some commonly held notions are myths and what they need to do. The myths to be discussed include, but are not limited to,

1. SAT/ACT score is the most important thing

2. The cumulative GPA is the only thing that matters from the High School Transcript

3. Grades after you sent your application does not matter

4. You can simply apply as undecided and not worry about what you will major.

5. SAT/ACT is unrelated to what you study in school

6. SAT Subject Tests are only for very special schools.

7. Month or two is enough to prepare for SAT/ACT/AP Exams/SAT Subject Tests.

8. 7th grade is too young to worry about college

Any specific question received in advance will be given special attention during the seminar presentation. Please send any question you may have to Complete Learning Academy via email at cla@clacenter.com or by phone at 412-701-1011. Korean service is available.

EAST SIDE SUSHI-A Drama from USA (106 min)

This is our first Indie entry in our Foreign/Indie film festival. After working at a fruit-vending cart for years, Juana gets a job at a Japanese restaurant. She is to do the dishes, clean up, and prep the food.  When she is not doing that, she is observing what the sushi chefs do.  At home, she practices what she sees.  After a year, she feels it is time to move up, telling the boss how he discriminates against Latinos. She wants to be Sushi Chef.  Two problems, she’s Latino and she’s a woman and the owner wants no woman chef.  Against all odds she embarks on a journey of self- discovery without anyone getting in the way of her dream.  Juana applies for a Sushi chef competition, and is accepted (without revealing she’s a woman). Will she win?  Will anyone notice?

No reservation is required. Refreshments will be served.

This month the group will be discussing "How to be Compassionate: a Handbook for Creating Inner Peace and a Happier World" by the Dalai Lama. No registration is required.

Are you interested in the various mysteries of the mind, the fields of alternative and holistic healing, theories about the connections of body and spirit, or intriguing archaeological findings that don’t fit existing historical research? If you are enticed by those subjects and are interested in “alternative” ways of looking at the world, you should join Readings in Alternative Everything, our newest book discussion group. This group is facilitated by Richard Kajuth, former educational consultant and lifelong student of esoteric inquiry and Eastern philosophy.

Who Fathered Jacob and William Northamer? Pennsylvania Tax Records Help Determine Kinship

To determine kinship, genealogists commonly rely on census, church, land, military, probate, and vital records. What other records can be employed when those documents either don’t exist, or don’t fully answer kinship questions? A scarcity of contemporary documents compels us to make the most of what survives. No historical document specifies parentage for Jacob and William Northamer of Pennsylvania’s Chester and Lancaster Counties, and multiple authors drew erroneous conclusions. Catherine Desmarais, CG, will present via webinar a case study published in the National Genealogical Society Quarterly demonstrating how she and Noreen Manzella analyzed and correlated tax records to reveal critical hidden parallels of residency and occupation that provided evidence of these men’s paternity.

This live webinar presentation will only be available at Northland Library. A question and answer session with the speaker will follow the presentation.

Pgh Crepes lures us in with savory options like the mushroom crepe or turkey and cheese, but we really want to eat dessert first and bite into the berry crepe and classic Nutella crepe! Mission Mahi gives us impossible choices! Should we try the blackened fish tacos or the Yinzer taco (yes, with fries on top)?

Mission Mahi and Pgh Crepes accept cash and all major credits cards, and will be open until 6pm or as supplies last given the variability of patron support and limited storage capacity of food trucks. For up-to-the-minute information, please call the library at 412-366-8100 or check our Facebook and Twitter pages. THE INNOCENTS-A Drama from France/Poland (109 min)

Poland, December 1945.  The war is over, but the country is still beset by danger and general chaos.  For the nuns in the convent, their ordeal continues.   With seven of the nuns pregnant, due to being raped by the Russians, they have nowhere to go.  If their secret gets, the convent will be closed.  They will be ostracized by their communities and destitute of help.  The nun’s faith is put to the test.  Each reacts in a different way as to what their faith commands them.  We get to know them little by little.  Along comes a French Red Cross worker who tries to help. The abbess has a problem as to whether the nurse should be let into their secret or whether God’s providence will be the answer. Beautifully shot and acted, this dark, stark portrayal will make you keep you glued to your seat.  Innocence is a quiet, harrowing film that tries to balance the nuns corporeal as well as eternal lives.

No reservation is required. Refreshments will be served.

Understanding Obsessive Compulsive Disorder*

Join Nick Flower, Psy.D., clinical psychologist, for a lively and informative discussion of Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) and its treatment. “What if I harm someone on impulse? What if I contaminate my whole family and they get really sick? What if I’m gay and don’t know it?” These are just some of the obsessions that nearly 4.5 million people struggle with on a daily basis all across the United States. Dr. Flower will discuss what OCD is and how it is most effectively treated with an opportunity for discussion and questions from the audience.

Dr. Flower is a clinical psychologist who specializes in the treatment of OCD and related anxiety disorders with exposure and response prevention therapy (ERP). He received special training in ERP from the International OCD Foundation (IOCDF) and sees mostly patients with OCD and anxiety disorders at his private practice located in Downtown Pittsburgh.

A reading and discussion. Are you interested in the various mysteries of the mind, the fields of alternative and holistic healing, theories about the connections of mind/body/spirit and your health or intriguing archeological findings that don’t fit existing historical research? If you are enticed by such areas of inquiry and are interested in “alternative” ways, rather than conventional ways, of looking at the world, you may be interested in joining our newest book discussion group. The facilitator will be Richard Kajuth, former educational consultant and lifelong student of esoteric inquiry and Eastern philosophy. No registration is required.
