Contact: Adult Services Department   412-366-8100x113   npladultserv@einetwork.net
The Tuesday Night Book Group will discuss The Wolf and the Watchman: A Father, A Son, and the CIA by Scott C. Johnson. As he was growing up, the author always suspected that his father was different. Only as a teenager did he discover the truth: his father was a spy, one of the CIA’s most trusted officers. At first the secret was thrilling. But over time Scott began to have doubts. How could a man so rigorously trained to deceive and manipulate simply turn off those skills at home? The Wolf and the Watchman is an account of truth and duplicity, of manipulation and loyalty. It is also a moving, intensely personal portrait of a bond between father and son that endured in the shadow of one of the world’s most secretive and unforgiving institutions. In February we will discuss The Unwinding: An Inner History of the New America by George Packer.

Our feature film this month is the comedy/drama "The Hundred-Foot Journey". The film concerns a young man whose family is forced to flee India after their mother is killed in a political upheaval. First to England, where it's too cold, then to France. When their car breaks down near the village of St Antonin, Papa says that it is here where "mother" tells them to open an Indian restaurant. It is also next to the one star Michelin restaurant owned by Madame Mallory. When the Madame learns of this, she does everything she can to stop it. Eventually Hassan figures out a way to make things work. The movie was produced by Steven Spielberg and Oprah Winfrey. It also stars Helen Mirren. Even though the movie is American produced, it is international in cast/ language/ location and subject. At the core of this film, it is a movie about good food, and one man’s passion for cooking. If you like "foodie" films, this movie will make your mouth water. So come join us. No reservation is required. Refreshments will be served.

Time Magazine described Rendell as “the best mystery writer in the English-speaking world.” High praise indeed! A timid housewife with seemingly nothing to hide is brutally murdered and Wexford is baffled until he discovers her dark secret. The case builds to a surprise finale that is suspense at its finest.     How many shades of blue do you know? From the sky to the sea, we’ll see plenty of blue. This month we’re going to get away from all the cold weather as we travel to French Polynesia. We’ll do plenty of snorkeling, scuba diving as well as surfing. Bora Bora is one of the most exotic places on earth. It is known for its tranquil blue waters, white sand beaches and house on stilts in the lagoon. From here, we go to Tahiti. Papeete is the largest city in French Polynesia. We’ll take in the French atmosphere as well as the food. We’ll also see some ancient Indian ruins called marae. In Fakarava, we’ll learn all about all the islands main export - black pearls. Lastly we’ll visit the Marquesas Islands. They are known for their lovely cliffs and mountainous gorges as well as for their wild beauty. These islands are extremely remote. The islanders were once known for eating their enemies. Here we’ll also see where Paul Gauguin is buried. So come join us. No reservation is required. Refreshments will be served.

misc_none 7:00 PM  -  9:00 PM Using Mindfulness to Change Your Organizing Habits* Remind Me about this Event   Tell a Friend
What in the world does mindfulness have to do with getting organized? Do I have to develop new habits just to get my house or my life in order? Joyce Wilde, author of the book, The Wilde Woman’s Guide to Organizing in Five Simple Steps: Using Mindfulness to Change Your Habits will talk about the emotional and mental roots that cause disorganization and the ways to make effective and lasting changes. If we only address the symptoms of disorganization, according to Wilde, and don’t get to the root causes, it’s like mowing dandelions in your yard – they’ll grow right back. The focus of Joyce Wilde’s workshop is to assist people who would like to be organized as a way of living instead of getting temporarily organized… how to find and understand the steps to make these transitions in our physical, emotional and mental processes. Her book will be available for those who would like to purchase a signed copy. You can register for this program online or by contacting the Adult Services Desk at 412-366-8100 ext. 113.

Contact: Adult Services Desk   412-366-8100x113   npladultserv@einetwork.net
Last year on Channel 4 News, Dr. Paul Lieber, MD, of Rehabilitation and Pain Specialists, explained in detail the non-surgical, regenerative procedures used by the physicians in his practice to treat painful joint injuries and degenerative conditions, such as osteoarthritis. The procedures utilize a patient’s own stem cells or blood platelets to help heal damaged tissues, tendons, ligaments, cartilage, spinal disc, or bone. Previously used primarily by athletes who wished to heal from their injuries and pain as quickly as possible, the non-surgical treatment has proved highly successful in returning patients to a functional lifestyle. The procedure may reverse some of the arthritic process and help many people avoid a major surgery. Hear Dr. Lieber explain this promising pain treatment and ask questions about the ways in which these specialists help restore movement and mobility to their patients.
