La Palapa pulls up to the curb, too, with with empanadas and tacos in beef, chicken and more. Don’t miss their Chipotle pork or chorizo and potatoes.

The food trucks are located in the upper parking lot. Nathaniel Hawthorne: The Haunted Mind*

Remembered today for his novels like "The Scarlet Letter" and "The House of the Seven Gables," Massachusetts author Nathaniel Hawthorne focused on tales and short stories for the majority of his career. Due to his reclusive nature, however, Hawthorne never offered a public reading in his lifetime and, in fact, often scorned the fame which he earned. For this presentation, however, the author himself (portrayed by literary historian Rob Velella) will return to read some of his short works which explore the dark side of human nature. A question and answer session will follow the performance.

About the presenter: Rob Velella is an independent literary historian and playwright specializing in American literature of the 19th century. In his ongoing efforts to bring the writers of yesterday back to the readers of today, he has dramatically brought to life several literary figures, including the young Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, Nathaniel Hawthorne, and Edgar Allan Poe.

CHILDREN OF THE MOUNTAIN- A Drama from Ghana (101 min)

Set in Accra, Ghana, comes this heart-wrenching story of a mother’s endless love.  The mother, Essuman, gives birth to a baby with a cleft lip. Both the community and the father reject the child as his, instead blaming it on some evil spirit. Almost everyone recommends the child to a horrible fate.  Two years later, Essuman wonders why her child can’t walk.  Nuku is determined to have Cerebral Palsy as well as Downs Syndrome.  She then is even more determined to find a cure, whether through surgery, medicine man or false prophet.  But none of this goes her way. Eventually this leads to a climax where all her love has run out.  Stick around for the answer to her problems, as well as some lovely African scenery.

No reservation is required.  Refreshments will be served.

MEDICARE: PUTTING THE PIECES TOGETHER*

Are you approaching your 65th birthday? Or maybe you are over 65 and thinking about retiring. If so, it's time to think about Medicare, get the facts, and make some decisions. In this educational presentation, you will learn about Medicare “Parts,” how much Medicare costs, what choices you have with Medicare, as well as when you should enroll. This program is presented by Patricia Spahr, an independent health plan agent. Patricia will explain the Medicare program and important time frames for enrolling.

She will also describe the various supplemental, Medicare Advantage, and prescription drug insurance options that are available in our area. She will help you think about important concerns that you should consider when choosing a plan, but will not recommend any one plan over another. Bring your questions and be informed!

Registration is required for this adult program and begins on June 15th. You may register online, in person at the adult reference desk or by calling 412-366-8100, extension 113.

July's book selection is Commonwealth by Ann Patchett. One Sunday afternoon in Southern California, Bert Cousins shows up at Franny Keating’s christening party uninvited. Before evening falls, he has kissed Franny’s mother, Beverly—thus setting in motion the dissolution of their marriages and the joining of two families. Spanning five decades, Commonwealth explores how this chance encounter reverberates through the lives of the four parents and six children involved.

Bring a brown bag lunch, and we'll provide the beverages. If you like reading and sharing your opinions and comments on books with others in an informal setting, you’ll enjoy our monthly book discussion group where we always have some lively conversations. Our August book selection is A Man Called Ove by Fredrik Backman. No registration required.

Free Speech and Free Expression: What You Can Say, Paint, Wear and Display—And Not.* Join us to learn about the First Amendment and find out what freedom of speech and expression really means! These guarantees, enshrined in our Constitution, form the foundation of a vibrant democracy. Without these rights, other fundamental rights would wither away. The fight to protect these rights has been at the core of the ACLU’s mission since the organization was founded in 1920. The organization’s work quickly spread to combating censorship, securing the right to assembly, and promoting free speech in schools. About the Presenter: Brenda Lee Green joined the ACLU as a high school senior and has maintained a three decade relationship with the ACLU of Pennsylvania as a member, volunteer, donor, and board member. Most of her work with the ACLU involves fighting censorship.

Italy - Tuscany / Umbria Regions (50mins)

Montepulciano - The wine center of Italy. We’ll visit a few of the local vintners as well as visit the caves where the wine ages.

Chianti Region – We’ll tour this famous rugged farmland where Chianti wine is grown.

Agratourism - Another name for a working B & B.  A place where you can eat/lodge and use as a base for taking daytrips. We’ll take a look at a few of these.

Assisi – We will tour Europe’s first gothic cathedral, the Basilica of St Francis.  Built in the early 13th century, it was the home and is the resting place of St Frances. We’ll also see St Mary of the Angels, built around 1679, it contains St Francis’ original chapel from which the Franciscan Order originated. The Temple of Minerva built in the 1st century BC temple is the centerpiece of the town.

Mangia Tower – It is one of Italy’s tallest secular towers.  It was used as the medieval seat of government for the town of Siena.

Siena Cathedral - At one time it was going to rival the cathedral at Florence.  Due to many setbacks, it never reached its glory.  We’ll see the Bernini sculptures as well as its impressive library. We’ll attend a Palio horse race, one wacky event.

We’ll learn how Pecorino Cheese, Prosciutto Ham as well as Panettone (Italy’s Fruit Cake) are made.

Nonverbal Communication: “The Hidden Message” *

In face-to-face communication, body language accounts for more than two thirds of the impact of your message. It is always more emotionally revealing and always more emotionally accurate than what we say. In this session, we will learn ways to enhance body language as well as how to understand the hidden messages sent by others. We will examine first impressions, consider how rapport is established, and look at projecting personal power. Learn how your appearance, posture, gesture, facial expression, eye contact, voice, touch and even smell impact your face-to-face communication. Special attention is given to gender differences and how they may account for misunderstanding.

About the presenter: Bill Acheson is an expert in nonverbal communication. As a faculty member of the Department of Communication at the University of Pittsburgh for over 20 years and as a professional speaker since 1994, Bill has spoken to thousands of people across the United States about how to use body language to communicate more effectively.

How an Idea Becomes a Book*

"I should write a book someday." It's a dream many of us keep on our back burners. But what if it could be more than a dream? Join fantasy novelist and short fiction writer Frederic S. Durbin in an exploration of the writing journey from the dreaming stage through idea generation, drafting, revision, seeking feedback, manuscript completion, and publication--how it can work, how to keep at it, and some techniques and tips that may make the journey easier. Get that book out of your head and onto the pages!
