WHAT YOU DON’T KNOW ABOUT IRA DISTRIBUTIONS CAN HURT YOU

Don’t miss our upcoming IRA distributions workshop, where we will discuss strategies for minimizing your potential tax losses and optimizing your retirement. If you’re at or near retirement age, you’ll soon have to pay taxes on your IRAs and other tax-deferred savings accounts. Taxes on required minimum distributions can be a major financial burden, unless you know how to protect yourself. Most Baby Boomers can’t afford a 50% tax penalty on their IRAs after age 701/2. Making a bad decision can potentially cost thousands of dollars in benefits over the course of a lifetime.

For questions and reservations please contact Nick Camp, NRC Wealth Strategie at 724-512-8010

Pgh Crepes lures us in with savory options like the mushroom crepe or turkey and cheese, but we really want to eat dessert first and bite into the berry crepe and classic Nutella crepe! Mission Mahi gives us impossible choices! Should we try the blackened fish tacos or the Yinzer taco (yes, with fries on top)?

Mission Mahi and Pgh Crepes accept cash and all major credits cards, and will be open until 6pm or as supplies last given the variability of patron support and limited storage capacity of food trucks. For up-to-the-minute information, please call the library at 412-366-8100 or check our Facebook and Twitter pages. THE INNOCENTS-A Drama from France/Poland (109 min)

Poland, December 1945.  The war is over, but the country is still beset by danger and general chaos.  For the nuns in the convent, their ordeal continues.   With seven of the nuns pregnant, due to being raped by the Russians, they have nowhere to go.  If their secret gets, the convent will be closed.  They will be ostracized by their communities and destitute of help.  The nun’s faith is put to the test.  Each reacts in a different way as to what their faith commands them.  We get to know them little by little.  Along comes a French Red Cross worker who tries to help. The abbess has a problem as to whether the nurse should be let into their secret or whether God’s providence will be the answer. Beautifully shot and acted, this dark, stark portrayal will make you keep you glued to your seat.  Innocence is a quiet, harrowing film that tries to balance the nuns corporeal as well as eternal lives.

No reservation is required. Refreshments will be served.

This month our Mystery Lovers Group will be reading The Killings at Badger’s Drift by Caroline Graham. Badger's Drift is an ideal English village, complete with vicar, bumbling local doctor, and kindly spinster with a nice line in homemade cookies. But when the spinster dies suddenly, her best friend kicks up an unseemly fuss, loud enough to attract the attention of Detective Chief Inspector Tom Barnaby.

For April (April 20) the group will be reading The Kill Artist by Daniel Silva.

Understanding Obsessive Compulsive Disorder*

Join Nick Flower, Psy.D., clinical psychologist, for a lively and informative discussion of Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) and its treatment. “What if I harm someone on impulse? What if I contaminate my whole family and they get really sick? What if I’m gay and don’t know it?” These are just some of the obsessions that nearly 4.5 million people struggle with on a daily basis all across the United States. Dr. Flower will discuss what OCD is and how it is most effectively treated with an opportunity for discussion and questions from the audience.

Dr. Flower is a clinical psychologist who specializes in the treatment of OCD and related anxiety disorders with exposure and response prevention therapy (ERP). The Steel City Wordsmiths is a group of writers working towards a published story.  Each month we’ll discuss different story topics, give feedback on excerpts, and most of all, work toward publication. It doesn’t matter if it’s a short story, novella, or a full-blown novel, every writer has a story to tell and we’re here to help you finish it.

If you have questions about this group, please contact the group leader Tom Prigg at gonzotales@gmail.com, please include “steel city wordsmiths” in the subject line. No registration required.

Scott Coffman, a middle school teacher, has been fostering an eight-year-old boy while the boy’s mother serves a jail sentence. Scott and Mara both have five days left until they must say good-bye to the ones they love the most.

Digital Boot Camp for Parents: Making Technology Work for You

Our students have the ability to design new computer programs, create videos, and build smartphone apps. Without proper guidance, these positive behaviors can cross the line into criminal offenses. Part of our Digital Boot Camp for Parents series, this session will touch on the ethics of technology and explain the limits of legal hacking and downloading. It will be held on the CCAC North campus; Room 3002. Doors open at 8:30am with the presentation starting promptly at 9:00am. Registration is required and space is limited. NORTHLAND GARDEN GALA*

Have you ever wondered how magical the Library can be after hours? Join us for a fundraising gala full of special tastings, entertainment and more. Beginning at 7:30 p.m., Northland will welcome WPXI’s Peggy Finnegan as Honorary Chair and wine expert John Eld as Honorary Sommelier  as we showcase an array of wine, spirits, cider and other vendors offering libations for guests to taste.

Tempting the palate will be food purveyors sharing their favorite specialties. With music, raffles and special treats, Northland’s Garden Gala is THE place to celebrate Earth Day and all Northland offers.

The Gala will benefit the construction of The Learning Garden at Northland, which will build a sensory garden and outdoor educational space for all ages.

Mark your calendars for April 22 and help us grow a special place to create, explore and discover!

Nonverbal Communication: “The Hidden Message” *

In face-to-face communication, body language accounts for more than two thirds of the impact of your message. It is always more emotionally revealing and always more emotionally accurate than what we say. In this session, we will learn ways to enhance body language as well as how to understand the hidden messages sent by others. We will examine first impressions, consider how rapport is established, and look at projecting personal power. Learn how your appearance, posture, gesture, facial expression, eye contact, voice, touch and even smell impact your face-to-face communication. Special attention is given to gender differences and how they may account for misunderstanding.

About the presenter: Bill Acheson is an expert in nonverbal communication. As a faculty member of the Department of Communication at the University of Pittsburgh for over 20 years and as a professional speaker since 1994, Bill has spoken to thousands of people across the United States about how to use body language to communicate more effectively.
