This month the group will be discussing The Seat of the Soul by Gary Zukav. No registration is required.

Are you interested in the various mysteries of the mind, the fields of alternative and holistic healing, theories about the connections of body and spirit, or intriguing archaeological findings that don’t fit existing historical research? If you are enticed by those subjects and are interested in “alternative” ways of looking at the world, you should join Readings in Alternative Everything, our newest book discussion group. This group is facilitated by Richard Kajuth, former educational consultant and lifelong student of esoteric inquiry and Eastern philosophy.

SECOND FRIDAY BOOK GROUP

October's book selection is Dietland by Sarai Walker. Plum Kettle does her best not to be noticed, because when you’re fat, to be noticed is to be judged. With her job answering fan mail for a popular teen girls’ magazine, she is biding her time until her weight-loss surgery. Only then can her true life as a thin person finally begin. Then, when a mysterious woman starts following her, Plum finds herself falling down a rabbit hole and into an underground community of women who live life on their own terms.

Bring a brown bag lunch, and we'll provide the beverages. If you like reading and sharing your opinions and comments on books with others in an informal setting, you’ll enjoy our monthly book discussion group where we always have some lively conversations. Our November book selection is The Life We Bury by Allen Eskens. No registration required.

MYSTERY LOVERS BOOK GROUP

This month our Mystery Lovers Group will be reading Term Limits by Vince Flynn. In one bloody night, three of Washington's most powerful politicians are executed with surgical precision. Their assassins then deliver a shocking ultimatum to the American government: set aside partisan politics and restore power to the people. No one, they warn, is out of their reach --- not even the president.

For November (November 17) the group will be reading The Last Detective by Peter Lovesey.

If you enjoy reading and discussing good mysteries, join us each month. No registration is required.

Hola, Northland Public Library patrons! Tasty Trucks @ Northland welcomes La Palapa food truck Thursday, November 3. The truck will be in the Library's upper parking lot from noon-6pm - or as supplies last - tempting your tastebuds with delicious foods such as empanadas (chicken, ground beef or vegetable) and tacos with numerous filling options, such as chipotle pork or chorizo and potatoes!

The Golden Age of Radio: When FM Stereo Was Tune in to Northland for a slice of Radio nostalgia you won't want to miss! Jon Eld has worn many hats in the Pittsburgh broadcast cirlces: Morning News Anchor, News Director, and Voice-Over Specialist. But his fondest memories go back to his first assignment as a musical host on WKJF-FM, Pittsburgh's premier full-time stereo station.

During this presentation, Jon will recreate a time when radio stations used turntables and music came from 12-inch long vinyl records, and explain why this was truly the Gold Age of stereophonic sound.

Please join us to relax and enjoy the music, ask questions, and share memories. You'll discover why WKJF, although not as famous as other Pittsburgh stations, set the bar for style and programming that made it the envy of similar stations all over the United States.

SWEET BEAN
A Drama from Japan (113 min)

Sentaro manages a little bakery shop.  He has  loyal clientele who come every day.  Sentaro cooks with skill but no enthusiasm.  When Tokue, a 76 year old woman, answers his ad for part time help, he at first says no due to her age.  However once he tastes her sweet bean paste, he tries her out. She’s a hit. However, both people hold a secret, if found, may drive them away.  The film is beautifully shot with plenty of cherry blossoms.  However, it will be the acting by the elderly woman that will hold your attention.  The movie is simple and slow paced in order to capture all the subtle nuances.  So come join us. No reservation is required.  Refreshments will be served.

A Drama from Iceland (93 min)

Gummi and Kiddi are brothers who live side by side.  They haven’t spoken to one another for over forty years.  Each one tends to their prize herd of sheep.  When Gummi finds one of Kiddi’s sheep dead, he sneaks a look at Kiddi’s sheep to see if something wrong.  The veterinarian determines that the sheep have Scrapie, an incurable brain disease.  Other farmer’s sheep are tested and some are found to be infected.  All the sheep must be killed in order to stop the disease.  Since sheep are the main source of income for the farmers, some have to go bankrupt.  Gummi has a secret plan to save the sheep.  When Kiddi finds out will he be help his brother save the sheep or will the feud continue?  When things get rough, will the brothers help one another.  Beautifully shot in Iceland.  If you think winters are rough here, you’ll witness an Icelandic winter. Any topic is acceptable. Conversation salons provide us with the opportunity to share opinions, listen with respect to other’s opinions and learn from each other. Join us for some lively discussion. No reservation is required. This program is brought to you by Northland Public Library and Allegheny County Library Association.
