Sam Hazo, Pittsburgh’s treasured poet, returns to Northland Library to share more of his poetry and some of his newly published work, spoken in his unmistakable style. Founder and director if the International Poetry Forum, Pennsylvania’s first state poet, author of fiction, essays, poetry and plays, professor emeritus at Duquesne University, award-winning Dr. Hazo is one of the most compelling and enduring poets of his generation. Recently published, Sexes: The Marriage Dialogues reveals Hazo’s attuned ear as he picks up insights, misunderstandings and surprising moments that are a part of married life. Also recently published, And The Time Is: Poems, 1958-2013, is a collection of his works over the years. His poetry subjects have ranged from the political scene to the local, from amusing small moments to the wider themes of mortality and love. Sit back and listen as Dr. Hazo discusses the ability of poetry to capture the essence of an event and recites for our pleasure some of his recent and earlier poems.     The Fort Pitt Block House, a historical treasure with national significance, recently celebrated its 250th birthday. Still standing in its original location, it is the only surviving structure of Fort Pitt, one of the largest and most elaborate British forts in North America and a key defense during the French and Indian War. Much of its timber elements, bricks and stone foundation are original to its 1764 construction. The building was gifted to the Daughters of the American Revolution who were dedicated to the preservation of this important piece of Pittsburgh’s early history. These women were successful in resisting the pressure from industrialists who wanted it moved or demolished to make way for changes at the Point. Join us at Northland Library as curator, James Halttunen, presents a fascinating program about this squat little building that played such an important role in the history of our city and our country.     Imagine moving to a foreign country and trying to go about ordinary, everyday tasks without being able to read or write the language of that country. Imagine trying to find a job if you only know a bare minimum of words in that language. Imagine trying to attend school in a foreign country without understanding the language. Every day, in the North Hills area, immigrants arrive who are eager to learn and eager to contribute to society and become American citizens, but they need assistance in learning to read and write in English. Some immigrants arrive in our country with fluent skills in English but their family members lack the language skills that will allow them to thrive in our society. Northland Public Library recognizes the absolute value of literacy skills in the life of its community and partners with the Greater Pittsburgh Literacy Council by providing free space for GPLC tutors who teach English as a Second Language. On Saturday, October 11 and Saturday, October 18, the Greater Pittsburgh Literacy Council and Northland Public Library will co-sponsor a free volunteer tutor training workshop at the library. If you would like to share the gift of literacy by helping an adult in our community with English language skills, please contact Anita at 412-393-7645 or at acohen@gplc.org for more information and/or to register.

In the past, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder was considered a childhood condition that could affect progress in school, social development and family dynamics. In more recent years, ADHD has been recognized as a lifelong condition that can adversely affect all major life activities including relationships. Susan Lieber, ADHD Coach and Professional Organizer, and Laura Roman, Relationship Therapist will team up to openly discuss the uniqueness of adult ADHD and present helpful strategies to create calmer and more fulfilling relationships. Laura is a psychotherapist with 26 years of experience working with individuals and couples, has ADHD herself and knows firsthand how it can impact relationships. Susan understands the challenges of living with ADHD from her experience with family members. Beginning as an occupational therapist, she left that field to start “Leave it to Lieber” as a certified professional organizer who specializes in working with individuals and families living with ADHD, helping them to gain awareness, develop strengths and lead meaningful, rewarding lives.     Contact: Adult Services Reference Desk   412-366-8100x113   npladultserv@einetwork.net
The Pittsburgh area is fortunate in having many good authors who have published thrillers, mysteries, ghost stories, love stories, books about current topics , books about the Pittsburgh area, about our sports teams and books of inspiration. Join us to hear from a group of our local authors about their works, how they developed their ideas and plots and how they got published. Here are the authors you’ll meet: Thomas Sweterlitsch is the author of Tomorrow and Tomorrow, a gritty science fiction thriller set in Pittsburgh in the not-too-distant future. A mysterious explosion has reduced most of the city to rubble and ashes. Years later, John Blaxton investigates his wife’s death through the “Archive,” which allows people to revisit the lost city and lost loved ones. In the course of his investigations, he finds that identities can be erased but crimes cannot. Is there a sinister explanation? Is the line between physical and virtual reality breaking down? A film option is in the works. J. J. Hensley, former police officer and special agent with the U. S. Secret Service, has drawn on his experiences in law enforcement to write Resolve, a finalist for Best First Novel by the International Thriller Writers Association and named one of the Best Books of 2013 by Suspense Magazine. Ex-cop and now professor of criminology, Cyprus Keller is running the 26.2 miles of a marathon, hunting down the killer of one of his students. Each chapter ticks off another mile of the marathon and as he runs, Keller provides the background of his search and gives readers the chilling sensation that the story could happen to anyone. His new thriller, Measure Twice, soon to be published, features a serial killer who sets new standards of murderous inventiveness. Penny McCann Pennington has written a moving novel about a family tragedy that forces two young children to move into their aunt’s decrepit boarding house in Pittsburgh, a city that is still reeling from the loss of its great steel industry. It Burns A Lovely Light is the story of growth and healing and the need for this newly-built family to pull together to avert disaster that threatens to strike again. Edie Claire began her publishing career with the ever popular Leigh Koslov mystery series set in the North Hills suburbs of Pittsburgh. The latest in the series, Never Thwart a Thespian, continues in the author’s usual fast-paced style, laced with intrigue and humor. Leigh Koslov’s aunt has decided to open a theatre for local thespians in an abandoned building in West View. The building’s history is unsavory, to say the least, including at least one murder. Leigh scrambles to discover the link between the murders of the past and the sinister threats of murder in the present. Edie Claire has also written romantic suspense novels and humorous plays and promises in all of her writings: suspense, happy endings, humor, and a dose of romance. Robert Needham invites the reader to explore the harmony between God and science in Mystery Mountain. A ninth grade science class and their teacher are offered an anonymous invitation to visit Mt. Ararat in Turkey with all expenses paid. The trip to this ancient Biblical site becomes more and more mysterious as it includes a variety of incidental encounters with some of the world’s greatest scientific, religious and philosophical thinkers, all of whom share a common bond not known to the world at large. These “visits” encourage the group to step outside their comfort zones and look at the world through different eyes. Earl McDaniel, former teacher and journalist, has written a gripping novel whose subject touches many lives in our current economy. Between Lives is the story of Mick Mackintosh, who has done everything right so far – earning a college degree, excelling in the fields of teaching and journalism, raising a family and sending a son off to college, when he is laid off from his job due to economic “belt-tightening.” As his attempts to re-enter the workforce fail, he feels diminished and undervalued and his world begins to crumble. He resists his younger son’s wish to join the military to fight in Iraq, struggles with financial problems, and is appalled by the indifference of the hiring process. Should he abandon the principles that have served him all his life in order to survive? Set in Western Pennsylvania, McDaniel’s novel will resonate with many readers who have endured the experience. After their presentations and a question and answer session, you will have an opportunity to meet the authors whose books will be available for purchase. Books make good gifts! Northland Library will offer a fall 10-week Wise Walk program, co-sponsored by the Allegheny County Library Association and UPMC. Participants will meet at the library to receive information and some handouts, then, with a volunteer leader, will walk at North Park for 30 to 45 minutes.
