WINSTON CHURCHILL AND FRANKLIN DELANO ROOSEVELT: FROM GRAND ALLIANCE TO DEAR FRIENDS

This is a story of one of the most important friendship of the 20th Century. Born during World War II at a time of great peril, nourished by extensive secret correspondence, personal meetings, and conferences, the friendship between Franklin Delano Roosevelt and Winston Churchill forever changed history and shaped the lives of hundreds of millions of people. Like all close relationships it was not free of disagreements, yet these two men, especially Churchill, never let their slights or disagreements break the bond forged in the crucible of War to defeat Nazism.

On September 6 at 7:00, the Tuesday Night Book Group will discuss The Witches: Salem, 1692, in which Pulitzer Prize winning author Stacy Schiff unravels the mystery of the Salem Witch Trials. In 1692, an entire village went crazy. The pre-teen daughters of the local minister were mysteriously overcome by convulsions and uncontrollable screaming. Satanic influence was suspected, and soon accusations of witchcraft were flying throughout the village. By the time the hysteria faded, 19 men and women were hanged, and an elderly man was crushed to death. How could such a thing happen? Join us as we discuss this extraordinary event.

The Tuesday Night Book Group reads nonfiction titles selected by group members. No registration is required and newcomers are always welcome. Our book for October will be Black Flags: The Rise of ISIS by Joby Warrick. Black Flags won the 2015 Pulitzer Prize for general nonfiction.

Are you interested in the various mysteries of the mind, the fields of alternative and holistic healing, theories about the connections of body and spirit, or intriguing archaeological findings that don’t fit existing historical research? If you are enticed by those subjects and are interested in “alternative” ways of looking at the world, you should join Readings in Alternative Everything, our newest book discussion group. THE FOOL-A Drama from Russia (116 min)

The tone of the movie starts with a hellish opening scene, which leads to the villain be scalded by steam after the pipes burst.  Dima is the crew chief of a maintenance team that has come to fix it. What he sees is cause for concern.  A huge crack spiraling up 10 stories is visibly seen on both the inside and the outside of the building.  He notices that the building is also tilting at a ten degree angle, leading him to believe the building, with its 820 inhabitants, will collapse in the next 24 hours.  He immediately speaks to the mayor and they cabinet who act upon it.  Or do they?   This movie is about how corrupt the Russian bureaucracy is.  Dima is labeled a fool because he believes that he can make a change. Dima gives you enough hope for the Russians, although this movie certainly won’t. No reservation required.  Join us on Wednesday, September 14 at 1:30 pm. Refreshments will be served. Being the primary caregiver for a loved one can be a very difficult task, and we often forget to take care of ourselves in the process. During this six week program, caregivers will develop a wealth of self-care tools to: reduce personal stress; change negative self-talk; communicate their needs to family members and healthcare or service providers; communicate more effectively in challenging situations; recognize the messages in their emotions, deal with difficult feelings; and make tough caregiving decisions.

This course will be led by Kelly Covone-Henning, Aging Educator and Community Resource Coordinator at the
Aging Institute of UPMC Senior Services and the University of Pittsburgh, and Michelle Rockwell, Lead Link Coordinator for Pennsylvania Link to Aging and Disability Resource Center.

This is a 6-week class(August 11, 18, 25 and September 1, 8, and 15), Pre-registration was required.

SECOND FRIDAY BOOK GROUP

October's book selection is Dietland by Sara Walker. Plum Kettle does her best not to be noticed, because when you’re fat, to be noticed is to be judged. With her job answering fan mail for a popular teen girls’ magazine, she is biding her time until her weight-loss surgery. Only then can her true life as a thin person finally begin. Then, when a mysterious woman starts following her, Plum finds herself falling down a rabbit hole and into an underground community of women who live life on their own terms.

Bring a brown bag lunch, and we'll provide the beverages. If you like reading and sharing your opinions and comments on books with others in an informal setting, you’ll enjoy our monthly book discussion group where we always have some lively conversations. Our November book selection is The Life We Bury by Allen Eskens. No registration required.

A reading and discussion. Are you interested in the various mysteries of the mind, the fields of alternative and holistic healing, theories about the connections of mind/body/spirit and your health or intriguing archeological findings that don’t fit existing historical research? If you are enticed by such areas of inquiry and are interested in “alternative” ways, rather than conventional ways, of looking at the world, you may be interested in joining our newest book discussion group. The facilitator will be Richard Kajuth, former educational consultant and lifelong student of esoteric inquiry and Eastern philosophy. No registration is required.
