The Tuesday Night Book Group will discuss The End of Your Life Book Club by Will Schwalbe. Once, by chance, they read the same book at the same time, and an informal book club of two was born. This memoir of caregiving, mourning, and love is also about the joy of reading, and how that joy is multiplied when we share it with others. The selection for January 6th will be The Wolf and the Watchman: A Father, a Son, and the C.I.A. by Scott C. Johnson.

Join us as we enjoy a drama from Poland called Ida. It is Poland, 1962. Anna, an orphan brought up by nuns in a convent is about to take her vows. Before she does, the Mother Superior insists that she visit her only relative, her aunt Wanda. Her aunt tells Anna of her Jewish roots, as well as her real name, Ida. Both women start a journey not only to find their family's tragic story, but to see who they really are and where they belong. They question what they used to believe in. Both of them are trying to go on living, but only one eventually can. A beautifully acted film. Ida is both grim and heartbreaking and sure to leave an impression upon you. No reservation is required and refreshments will be served. Come join us.

If you think it’s cold in Pittsburgh in December come with us as we travel to Iceland. We’ll warm up as we end our trip in Istanbul. Our first destination will be the Blue Lagoon. It is known as the world’s largest “bathtub”, heated by geothermal energy. Strokkur is Iceland’s equivalent of “Old Faithful”. This geyser erupts every 4-6 minutes. While the Vatnajokull is Europe’s largest glacier, Dettifoss is the “Niagara Falls” of Iceland. It is the tallest waterfall in Iceland as well as Europe’s largest by volume. In Istanbul the highlights will include the Blue Mosque With its blue geometrical tiles and ornate calligraphy. Next we’ll see the Hagia Sophia, one of the largest churches/ mosques in the world. We’ll cruise down the Bosphorus Strait that divides Europe and Asia. Overlooking the Bosphorus is the Topkapi Palace, the residence of the Sultans of the Ottoman Empire. Here we’ll lean the real meaning of what a harem is. Lastly we’ll shop at the Grand Bazaar. So come join us on. Refreshments served. No reservation required.

If you enjoy reading and discussing good mysteries, join us at our January meeting where we’ll talk about Ruth Rendell’s first Inspector Wexford mystery, From Doon to Death. Time Magazine described Rendell as “the best mystery writer in the English-speaking world.” High praise indeed! A timid housewife with seemingly nothing to hide is brutally murdered and Wexford is baffled until he discovers her dark secret. The case builds to a surprise finale that is suspense at its finest. The mystery for discussion in February is Friday the Rabbi Slept Late by Harry Kemelman.

misc_none 7:00 PM  -  9:00 PM Using Mindfulness to Change Your Organizing Habits* Remind Me about this Event   Tell a Friend
What in the world does mindfulness have to do with getting organized? Do I have to develop new habits just to get my house or my life in order? Joyce Wilde, author of the book, The Wilde Woman’s Guide to Organizing in Five Simple Steps: Using Mindfulness to Change Your Habits will talk about the emotional and mental roots that cause disorganization and the ways to make effective and lasting changes. If we only address the symptoms of disorganization, according to Wilde, and don’t get to the root causes, it’s like mowing dandelions in your yard – they’ll grow right back. The focus of Joyce Wilde’s workshop is to assist people who would like to be organized as a way of living instead of getting temporarily organized… how to find and understand the steps to make these transitions in our physical, emotional and mental processes. Her book will be available for those who would like to purchase a signed copy. You can register for this program online or by contacting the Adult Services Desk at 412-366-8100 ext. 113.

Contact: Adult Services Desk   412-366-8100x113   npladultserv@einetwork.net
Last year on Channel 4 News, Dr. Paul Lieber, MD, of Rehabilitation and Pain Specialists, explained in detail the non-surgical, regenerative procedures used by the physicians in his practice to treat painful joint injuries and degenerative conditions, such as osteoarthritis. The procedures utilize a patient’s own stem cells or blood platelets to help heal damaged tissues, tendons, ligaments, cartilage, spinal disc, or bone. Previously used primarily by athletes who wished to heal from their injuries and pain as quickly as possible, the non-surgical treatment has proved highly successful in returning patients to a functional lifestyle. The procedure may reverse some of the arthritic process and help many people avoid a major surgery. Hear Dr. Lieber explain this promising pain treatment and ask questions about the ways in which these specialists help restore movement and mobility to their patients.
