Doris Dumrauf has combined her love of nature, especially birds, and her love of photography to become an expert on the birds of Western Pennsylvania. She has turned her backyard into a haven for birds who have become willing photo subjects as well. Over 400 bird species have been recorded in Pennsylvania, making our state an ideal location to observe our feathered friends. Many people recognize the most common birds who visit their yards in the warm weather and wish they could name some of the other varieties they see and hear each day. Many of us wish we could attract certain birds to our yard to enjoy their beauty and their songs. What are the habits of these birds? What foods do they prefer and what are their personalities? Join us as Doris shares her knowledge of these wonderful creatures of nature through her stunning, award-winning photography. She is a graduate of the New York Institute of Photography and is a regular contributor to Pennsylvania Magazine. You will learn to identify many of your backyard visitors and may also learn how to make your yard a welcome site for some of these beautiful birds. You may register for this free program online or by contacting the Adult Services Reference Desk at 412-366-8100 x113.

Over 65 and retiring? Not employed but nearing 65? It’s time to think about Medicare, get the facts, and make some decisions. Join us on Monday, August 18, at 7 p.m. for this educational presentation. No part of Medicare pays for all of a beneficiary’s covered medical costs and many costs are not covered at all. The program contains premiums, deductibles and coinsurance, which the covered individual must pay out-of-pocket. Some people may qualify to have other government programs (such as Medicaid) pay premiums and some or all of the costs associated with Medicare. Enrolling in Medicare is the first step, but understanding how Medicare works should come before that first step. There are procedures to consider and decisions to make about supplemental insurance plans and prescription drug plans. Patricia Spahr, an independent health plan agent, will explain, in plain terms, how Medicare works, how enrollment works and what decisions you must make in order to enroll in a plan. She will describe the various supplemental health insurance plans that are available in our area, but will not recommend any one of them over another. Bring your questions and become informed in order to make wise decisions that affect your health care for the future. You can register online or by contacting the Adult Services Reference Desk at 412-366-8100 x113.

With Cuba, have you ever wondered what’s behind the “curtain”. Cuba is just 90 miles off the coast of Florida and we as American travelers know so little about our next door neighbor. This month, presenters, Helga & Charles Klenk venture behind the “curtain”. Last year through a Road Scholar program (formerly Elderhostel), they visited Cuba in a “people to people" cultural exchange program. They visited many of their homes, schools and hospices. They will show us a wide range of socio-economic classes from the poor to the ordinary to the famous. We will also see the sights, learn about their obsession with antique cars, go shopping, as well as the local cuisine. We will travel to Havana, Santa Clara, Trinidad, and Cienfuegos. Some of the sites will include: Havana's capitol building was patterned after the US capitol, but is 2 meters higher. The Che Guevara memorial is located in Santa Clara, but Che is revered throughout Cuba. We will visit the small beach resort frequented by Cubans called Playa Giron. Americans call it the Bay of Pigs. No registration required. Refreshments will be served. So come join us.

The LUNCHBOX A Romance from India (105 min.) In the movie, The Lunchbox, Ila wants to add some spice to her marriage by trying out a new recipe out on her neglectful husband. Mumbai is famous for its efficient lunchbox delivery system. However this time it is inadvertently sent to Saajan, a lonely man on the verge of retirement. When there is no response to the meal by the husband, Ila sends a note in the following day’s lunchbox. This begins a series of lunchbox notes. The mere comfort of communicating with a stranger relaxes Ila. The notes become little confessions about one another’s loneliness. As this “virtual” relationship increases , it could jeopardize their realities. Winner of 19 awards and 32 other nominations, this movie is sure to spice things up. Come join us. No reservation is required and refreshments will be served.

    Contact: Anita   412-393-7645   acohen@gplc.org
Imagine moving to a foreign country and trying to go about ordinary, everyday tasks without being able to read or write the language of that country. Imagine trying to find a job if you only know a bare minimum of words in that language. Imagine trying to attend school in a foreign country without understanding the language. Every day, in the North Hills area, immigrants arrive who are eager to learn and eager to contribute to society and become American citizens, but they need assistance in learning to read and write in English. Some immigrants arrive in our country with fluent skills in English but their family members lack the language skills that will allow them to thrive in our society. Northland Public Library recognizes the absolute value of literacy skills in the life of its community and partners with the Greater Pittsburgh Literacy Council by providing free space for GPLC tutors who teach English as a Second Language. On Saturday, October 11 and Saturday, October 18, the Greater Pittsburgh Literacy Council and Northland Public Library will co-sponsor a free volunteer tutor training workshop at the library. If you would like to share the gift of literacy by helping an adult in our community with English language skills, please contact Anita at 412-393-7645 or at acohen@gplc.org for more information and/or to register.
