BRGR knows what you want. You want a Double Yoi burger! If you’re more the fresh sushi type, we have you covered. You can have both when BRGR and Nakama bring their food trucks to Northland Public Library on May 4. In addition to the Double Yoi, one of the signature handcrafted burgers BRGR features for meat lovers, you may enjoy spicy Fire in the Hole or the braised beef short rib Button Buster. Nakama offers much more than its tender traditional Japanese hibachi. Their sushi rolls, hand-rolled egg rolls, noodle dishes and fried rice are always popular.

Pizza and ice cream are calling you on Thursday, May 18 when Wood Fired Flatbreads fires up the oven for hot, crispy, made-to-order pizzas, and Sugar and Spice returns with ice cream that makes us want to chill!

The food trucks accept cash and all major credits cards, and will be open until 6pm or as supplies last given the variability of patron support and limited storage capacity of food trucks. The events benefit Northland Public Library Foundation, which provides financial support to the library through community fundraising.

Mark your calendars for TT@N every first and third Thursday and enjoy delicious foods while helping your library! Coming in June: Pgh Crepes and La Palapa on June 1; Mission Mahi and Sugar and Spice on June 15

Ren Xing is a spoiled ten year old who has everything.  Her parents are never together at any one time due to business. The grandfather is not up to date with the world, and doesn’t want to, so the two do not understand one another.  However, the grandfather has to visit the grave of his late wife before his beloved nightingale dies, as the nightingale is eighteen years old .  The nightingale is the last remnant of the time he spent with his wife.  His wife had never heard the nightingale sing.  To get to her grave site is a long trek. Will the two bond while on the trek?  The movie is beautifully shot in the idyllic Chinese countryside.  No reservation is required.  Join us. Refreshments will be served.

May's book selection is The Nightingale by Kristin Hannah. The Nightingale tells the stories of two sisters, separated by years and experience, by ideals, passion and circumstance, each embarking on her own dangerous path toward survival, love, and freedom in German-occupied, war-torn France--a heartbreakingly beautiful novel that celebrates the resilience of the human spirit and the durability of women.

Bring a brown bag lunch, and we'll provide the beverages. If you like reading and sharing your opinions and comments on books with others in an informal setting, you’ll enjoy our monthly book discussion group where we always have some lively conversations.

Wood Fired Flatbreads fires up the oven for hot, crispy, made-to-order pizzas, and Sugar and Spice returns with ice cream that makes us want to chill! Enjoy Wood Fired Flatbreads’ Classic Formaggi - a delicious cheese pizza using Stanislaus Pizzaiolo sauce and a smothering of proprietary four cheese blend of mozzarella, provolone, asiago and cheddar. Amazing on its own or add some toppings to kick it up a notch. From sundaes to cones and everything in between,

Sugar and Spice will bring far more than the usual chocolate and vanilla flavors to our door. Flavors change daily and have included notables such as Scooter Crunch, Mint Chip and Dutch Apple.

The food trucks accept cash and all major credits cards, and will be open until 6pm or as supplies last given the variability of patron support and limited storage capacity of food trucks. The events benefit Northland Public Library Foundation, which provides financial support to the library through community fundraising.

Rasam is a spicy soup made in South India using lentils, pepper, tomato and other spices. It is very nutritious and very good for digestion. It is eaten along with rice or drunk after a meal. It is usually difficult to find a healthy dish that is also appetizing, but rasam is one of those dishes!

HUNT FOR THE WILDERPEOPLE- (A Comedy from New Zealand) (101 min)

This wacky, outrageously funny adventure is set in New Zealand's wilderness It is filled with quirky, compelling characters and witty dialog. Ricky, a thirteen year old, is a defiant hip-hop foster kid being given a last chance to be “adopted” or else go to juvenile prison.  Bella, his new “aunt” is a lovable wack- a - doodle, while Hector is his new cantankerous “uncle”.   When something happens to Bella, it is Hector who must take over.  In a misunderstanding Ricky, runs away, Hector tries to find him.  This starts a national manhunt for which the police get involved, as well as the worlds most dedicated social worker, believing Hector has kidnapped Ricky. Will Hector and Ricky bond ?. The joy is in watching them try.  The acting is superb, especially by Bella.  The wilderness and brush scenery is beautiful.  The movie will keep you in stitches.  No reservation required.  Join us.  Refreshments will be served.

Nathaniel Hawthorne: The Haunted Mind*

Remembered today for his novels like "The Scarlet Letter" and "The House of the Seven Gables," Massachusetts author Nathaniel Hawthorne focused on tales and short stories for the majority of his career. Due to his reclusive nature, however, Hawthorne never offered a public reading in his lifetime and, in fact, often scorned the fame which he earned. For this presentation, however, the author himself (portrayed by literary historian Rob Velella) will return to read some of his short works which explore the dark side of human nature. A question and answer session will follow the performance.

About the presenter: Rob Velella is an independent literary historian and playwright specializing in American literature of the 19th century. In his ongoing efforts to bring the writers of yesterday back to the readers of today, he has dramatically brought to life several literary figures, including the young Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, Nathaniel Hawthorne, and Edgar Allan Poe.

MEDICARE: PUTTING THE PIECES TOGETHER*

Are you approaching your 65th birthday? Or maybe you are over 65 and thinking about retiring. If so, it's time to think about Medicare, get the facts, and make some decisions. In this educational presentation, you will learn about Medicare “Parts,” how much Medicare costs, what choices you have with Medicare, as well as when you should enroll. This program is presented by Patricia Spahr, an independent health plan agent. Patricia will explain the Medicare program and important time frames for enrolling.

She will also describe the various supplemental, Medicare Advantage, and prescription drug insurance options that are available in our area. She will help you think about important concerns that you should consider when choosing a plan, but will not recommend any one plan over another. Bring your questions and be informed!

Registration is required for this adult program and begins on June 15th. You may register online, in person at the adult reference desk or by calling 412-366-8100, extension 113.

Free Speech and Free Expression: What You Can Say, Paint, Wear and Display—And Not.* Join us to learn about the First Amendment and find out what freedom of speech and expression really means! These guarantees, enshrined in our Constitution, form the foundation of a vibrant democracy. Without these rights, other fundamental rights would wither away. The fight to protect these rights has been at the core of the ACLU’s mission since the organization was founded in 1920. The organization’s work quickly spread to combating censorship, securing the right to assembly, and promoting free speech in schools. About the Presenter: Brenda Lee Green joined the ACLU as a high school senior and has maintained a three decade relationship with the ACLU of Pennsylvania as a member, volunteer, donor, and board member. Most of her work with the ACLU involves fighting censorship.

Nonverbal Communication: “The Hidden Message” *

In face-to-face communication, body language accounts for more than two thirds of the impact of your message. It is always more emotionally revealing and always more emotionally accurate than what we say. In this session, we will learn ways to enhance body language as well as how to understand the hidden messages sent by others. We will examine first impressions, consider how rapport is established, and look at projecting personal power. Learn how your appearance, posture, gesture, facial expression, eye contact, voice, touch and even smell impact your face-to-face communication. Special attention is given to gender differences and how they may account for misunderstanding.

About the presenter: Bill Acheson is an expert in nonverbal communication. As a faculty member of the Department of Communication at the University of Pittsburgh for over 20 years and as a professional speaker since 1994, Bill has spoken to thousands of people across the United States about how to use body language to communicate more effectively.

How an Idea Becomes a Book*

"I should write a book someday." It's a dream many of us keep on our back burners. But what if it could be more than a dream? Join fantasy novelist and short fiction writer Frederic S. Durbin in an exploration of the writing journey from the dreaming stage through idea generation, drafting, revision, seeking feedback, manuscript completion, and publication--how it can work, how to keep at it, and some techniques and tips that may make the journey easier. Get that book out of your head and onto the pages!

A reading and discussion. Are you interested in the various mysteries of the mind, the fields of alternative and holistic healing, theories about the connections of mind/body/spirit and your health or intriguing archeological findings that don’t fit existing historical research? If you are enticed by such areas of inquiry and are interested in “alternative” ways, rather than conventional ways, of looking at the world, you may be interested in joining our newest book discussion group. The facilitator will be Richard Kajuth, former educational consultant and lifelong student of esoteric inquiry and Eastern philosophy. No registration is required.
