December's book selection is Fates and Furies by Lauren Groff. Every story has two sides. And sometimes, it turns out, the key to a great marriage is not its truths but its secrets. At age twenty-two, Lotto and Mathilde are tall, glamorous, madly in love, and destined for greatness. A decade later, their marriage is still the envy of their friends, but with an electric thrill we understand that things are even more complicated and remarkable than they have seemed.

Bring a brown bag lunch, and we'll provide the beverages. If you like reading and sharing your opinions and comments on books with others in an informal setting, you’ll enjoy our monthly book discussion group where we always have some lively conversations. Our January book selection is Station Eleven by Emily St. John Mandel. No registration required.

Are you interested in the various mysteries of the mind, the fields of alternative and holistic healing, theories about the connections of body and spirit, or intriguing archaeological findings that don’t fit existing historical research? If you are enticed by those subjects and are interested in “alternative” ways of looking at the world, you should join Readings in Alternative Everything, our newest book discussion group. This group is facilitated by Richard Kajuth, former educational consultant and lifelong student of esoteric inquiry and Eastern philosophy.

DUKHTAR -A Drama from Pakistan (93 min)

An extraordinary film that comes from one of the most remote and starkly beautiful spots on Earth.  Allah Rakhi is unhappy in her arranged marriage.  When she finds out that her ten-year old daughter has just been promised to a fifty plus year old enemy tribal leader as a peace offering, Rakhi takes her daughter Zainab and runs away.  Zainab is still playing with dolls and has no idea what the ramifications are. Rakhi meets up with an ex mujahideen who at first is reluctant to help. She is being pursued by her family as well as the tribal leader’s men. Rakhi has no plans as to what to do but get away.  This movie was Pakistan’s entry for the Academy Awards.  Dukhar isn’t a preachy film, but is a bit unnerving in the eyes of Western values.  Dukhtar is an important and moving film for giving voice to these silent women who are treated as property and not people.

Booked for Lunch*

Looking for the Second Friday Book Club? You've found it! We now go by Booked for Lunch. For January, we will be reading Station Eleven by Emily St. John Mandel. Kirsten Raymonde will never forget the night Arthur Leander, the famous Hollywood actor, had a heart attack on stage during a production of King Lear. That was the night when a devastating flu pandemic arrived in the city, and within weeks, civilization as we know it came to an end.

Bring a brown bag lunch, and we'll provide the beverages. If you like reading and sharing your opinions and comments on books with others in an informal setting, you’ll enjoy our monthly book discussion group where we always have some lively conversations. Our February book selection is The Secrets of Flight by Maggie Leffler. No registration required.

Voices through Time: What I Learned from My Mother's Roller Skate Case
Faith Jack, NHG Member

After my father passed away in 2013, my siblings and I cleaned out our parents' house. Being the family historian, I wanted to keep almost everything while my siblings wanted to purge. As a child, I can remember my mother taking out her old roller-skate case and showing me letters, photos, and mementos from her childhood. Little did I know that taking the case home with me would be the impetus for progress in my genealogical journey.

All are welcome to this free program.

Mystery Lovers Book Group*

This month our Mystery Lovers Group will be reading Murder On A Girls’ Night Out by Anne George. Country Western is red hot these days, so over-impulsive Mary Alice thinks it makes perfect sense to buy the Skoot ‘n’ Boot bar. Sensible retired schoolteacher Patricia Anne is inclined to disagree—especially when they find a strangled and stabbed body dangling in the pub’s wishing well.

For February, (February 16) the group will be reading In the Heat of the Summer by John Katzenbach.

EAST SIDE SUSHI-A Drama from USA (106 min)

This is our first Indie entry in our Foreign/Indie film festival. After working at a fruit-vending cart for years, Juana gets a job at a Japanese restaurant. She is to do the dishes, clean up, and prep the food.  When she is not doing that, she is observing what the sushi chefs do.  At home, she practices what she sees.  After a year, she feels it is time to move up, telling the boss how he discriminates against Latinos. She wants to be Sushi Chef.  Two problems, she’s Latino and she’s a woman and the owner wants no woman chef.  Against all odds she embarks on a journey of self- discovery without anyone getting in the way of her dream.  Juana applies for a Sushi chef competition, and is accepted (without revealing she’s a woman). Will she win?  Will anyone notice?

No reservation is required. Refreshments will be served.

THE INNOCENTS-A Drama from France/Poland (109 min)

Poland, December 1945.  The war is over, but the country is still beset by danger and general chaos.  For the nuns in the convent, their ordeal continues.   With seven of the nuns pregnant, due to being raped by the Russians, they have nowhere to go.  If their secret gets, the convent will be closed.  They will be ostracized by their communities and destitute of help.  The nun’s faith is put to the test.  Each reacts in a different way as to what their faith commands them.  We get to know them little by little.  Along comes a French Red Cross worker who tries to help. The abbess has a problem as to whether the nurse should be let into their secret or whether God’s providence will be the answer. Beautifully shot and acted, this dark, stark portrayal will make you keep you glued to your seat.  Innocence is a quiet, harrowing film that tries to balance the nuns corporeal as well as eternal lives.

No reservation is required. Refreshments will be served.

Join Nick Flower, Psy.D., clinical psychologist, for a lively and informative discussion of Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) and its treatment. “What if I harm someone on impulse? What if I contaminate my whole family and they get really sick? What if I’m gay and don’t know it?” These are just some of the obsessions that nearly 4.5 million people struggle with on a daily basis all across the United States. Dr. Flower will discuss what OCD is and how it is most effectively treated with an opportunity for discussion and questions from the audience.

Dr. Flower is a clinical psychologist who specializes in the treatment of OCD and related anxiety disorders with exposure and response prevention therapy (ERP). He received special training in ERP from the International OCD Foundation (IOCDF) and sees mostly patients with OCD and anxiety disorders at his private practice located in Downtown Pittsburgh.

The Steel City Wordsmiths is a group of writers working towards a published story.  Each month we’ll discuss different story topics, give feedback on excerpts, and most of all, work toward publication. It doesn’t matter if it’s a short story, novella, or a full-blown novel, every writer has a story to tell and we’re here to help you finish it.

If you have questions about this group, please contact the group leader Tom Prigg at gonzotales@gmail.com, please include “steel city wordsmiths” in the subject line. No registration required.
