    Teen Summer Reading: Make your own superhero movie. Join us for a fun program using the library's iPads to create our own movie shorts. Teens can write their own original scripts or adapt a favorite film to something else. We will use the library and surrounding grounds to film. This will be a special project to see how many film shorts we can make. We will be meeting on Monday July 6th from 2:30 p.m. to 4:00 p.m., Wednesday July 8th from 10:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. and Monday July 20 from 2:30 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. for final editing. Registration is required for each session and begins on June 15. You are welcome to come to as many as you can. Open to students in rising 6th grade to 12th grade. Summer Reading Club participants are required to have their own library card to attend programs. You may register online, in person at the children's/young adult reference desk or you may call 412-366-8100 extension 123. Program age restrictions will be enforced.

    Northland’s Foreign FILM FESTIVAL - Presents THE CHORUS A Drama from France (97 min) Pierre, a world famous conductor, has been awakened from his sleep by the news of a death. He returns to his childhood hometown to attend the funeral of his mother. As he returns this brings about memories of a teacher he once had, a Mr. Mathieu. He was a failed musician, who has given up on his profession. One evening he overhears a boy singing. He is so good; his hopes are revived once again. This will put him at odds with the other teachers and the headmaster. At the juvenile delinquency school any kind of real education is frowned upon because the headmaster believes that they are incorrigible. The headmaster believes in action – reaction, do something wrong and be punished. Mr. Mathieu secretly he teaches the boys, leading to a concert for the benefactors of the school. This movie is in the style of Music of the Heart and Mr. Holland’s Opus. It was also nominated for Best Foreign Film as well as Best Original Song at the Academy Awards. So come join us.     Dr. Anthony Kovatch, of Pediatric Alliance, and Dr. Noah Erickson, of Innovative Family Wellness, will discuss the latest theories and therapies for children with Autistic Spectrum Disorder. Continuing studies emphasize that there is no single best treatment for children with ASD, but combinations of medical and non-medical approaches, started very early, are often the most useful therapies to assist with developmental cognitive and language skills. Dr. Kovatch and Dr. Erickson will be glad to answer your questions after their presentation. Registration is required for this adult program.     HONEYMOON HOLIDAYS (82min) This month we will go to six destinations for couples that want a trip of a lifetime. These are magical places that combine natural beauty, adventure, native cuisine and entertainment. Our stops are: French Riviera - Known as the Cote d’Azure. We’ll visit Nice with its beaches of sand and pebbles. Nice and the surrounding towns contain many mansions of the Belle Epoque Age. We’ll also visit the gardens of the Rothchilds and a castles rented by Picasso. Barcelona - Couples will be romanced by the sound of the Spanish Guitar as well as flamenco dancing. They will be amazed with the playful forms of architecture all around the city influenced by Gaudi. Tuscany - Couples will fall in love with the rolling hillside towns, as well as the vineyards. We’ll visit Siena and Assisi and take in a cheese rolling contest. Croatia – Europe’s less traveled Riviera as we tour the Dalmation coast. We’ll walk the town walls of Dubrovnik. In Split we’ll visit the largest private residence of the ancient world. Turquoise Coast - We’ll take a “blue cruise” which is a honeymoon escape to the deep blue waters off of the Turkish coast to such ancient sites as Ephasus and Dalyan. South Africa- Between its rugged coast and tall mountains, is the “Garden Route” A place of rugged beauty where you can fish, kayak, sleep in a tree house as well as visit wineries and game preserves. We’ll also go whale watching at Africa’s southernmost point. Come join us. No reservation is required. Refreshments will be served.

Ruchi Karki, Franklin Park resident, originally from Nepal, will speak about her country’s rich heritage accompanied by a slide show and a display of artifacts and handicrafts. The recent devastating earthquakes in her country and the rebuilding efforts that will take many years are very much on her mind. For those who wish to help in some way with that effort, Ruchi will provide a list of organizations that are working toward Nepal’s future. Registration is required for this adult program.     Welcome to the Sticks-A Comedy from France(106 min.)Philippe works at the post office. To please his wife, Philippe asks to be transferred to the French Riviera. In order to increase his chances, he says that he is handicapped. However, when an inspector arrives, he is busted. Instead of being fired , he receives and even worse punishment - being transferred to the north of France. Next comes a cultural comedy between the Northerners and the Southerners. In the north, legend has it that it is still snows in May, that the people are crude alcoholics who speak funny. Philippe finds out that all the legends are wrong, and that he really enjoys the people and the place. When his wife and friends ask how things are going , he tells them the truth, but they don’t believe him. So he keeps telling them what they want to hear.     Eastern Canada (52 minutes) - This month we travel to the three eastern provinces of Canada - Quebec, Nova Scotia and Newfoundland. We'll see a lot of Old World charm as well as some beautiful natural scenery. In Montreal we'll visit a half dozen of the cities neighborhoods to find out why they are so unique. We'll also tour the Notre Dame Cathedral as well as Rue St Paul, one of the oldest streets in North America. Quebec City is famous for its Old World Flavor. We'll also see two of its iconic landmarks, the Citadel as well as the Chateau Frontenac. The Cirque du Soleil is from here. In Nova Scotia, we'll visit its capital, Halifax. We'll also tour the famous Peggy's Cove lighthouse. In Lunenburg we'll get acquainted with the houses known for the Lunenberg "bump". In Newfoundland we'll go porpoise and whale watching while we try to dodge icebergs. So come join us. No registration is required. Refreshments will be served.

    Join us for the North Hills Road Show at Cumberland Woods Village, Legacy Lineup. Speakers will be: Debby Rabold, Franklin Park Historian and Amy Steele, Executive Director Northland Public Library. The North Hills Road Show is a 90-minute presentation featuring photos that depict the evolution of areas in McCandless, Bradford woods, Franklin Park, Ross and Marshall townships from as early as 1890. The speakers will be showing the development of the North Hills from the point of view of road projects that were done when this area was still very rural. They will show landmarks, buildings and how our community has evolved into what it is today as depicted on the library’s local history website at www.northlandlocalhistory.org. This outreach program is free and open to the public. There is no registration.

    SLOVAKIA (65 minutes) This month we will celebrate Oktoberfest by traveling to Slovakia. We'll travel back in time to learn about the culture of the area as well as what foods they eat. In Slovakia's capital we'll visit its capital, Bratislava where we'll visit it's "White House" We'll also see the whole city from the castle that overlooks the city. In Slovakia's oldest city, Nitra, we learn about how this city was once the cradle of Christianity as we learn about St Cyril and Methodius. One fof the most visited sites is Bojnice Castle. It is a fairy tale castle with its own caves underneath it. At Orava Castle we'll take a ghoulish night tour. This is where the film Nosferatu was filmed. In eastern Slovakia, we'll visit the numerous small Russian wooden churches, built with no nails. In Medzilaborce, we'll visit the Andy Warhol museum. The Warhol family is from here. Lastly we'll travel up the second highest mountain in the Tatras, to see a most spectacular view as we look down upon the clouds. So come join us. No reservation is required for this free program. Refreshments will be served.
