Join us for a program featuring members of the National Association of Professional Organizers who excel at informative and instructive ways to tackle these necessary tasks. Many professional organizers concentrate on specific areas of need, such as organizing a home that includes a special needs person or setting up a home office. Two of the organizers will do short presentations on Estate Management and Going Green. Then we will open the program for all of your “getting organized” questions, on whatever subject they may be, directed to a panel of these helpful professionals.     Contact: Adult Services Desk   42-366-8100x113
Many of our parents or grandparents used what we now call Depression Glass for their everyday tableware. Or they had unusual pieces of pottery salt and pepper shakers or serving dishes on the table at every meal. Some of these items are still being used or stored away in our homes today and we often wonder about their history and their worth today. Joyce Kuruce and Robert Lanza, of Antiques and Uniques of Bellevue, know the value of those old glass and pottery pieces and they invite you to bring one or two items of glass or pottery to a library program. They will share some interesting background on glass and pottery of many years ago and will give an informal appraisal of the items you treasure.     The Mary Roberts Rinehart Pittsburgh Chapter of Sisters In Crime host a Discussion with Author Nancy Martin on The Three Most Important Characters in a Mystery. Fans, writers and mystery readers are invited to join us for this amazing opportunity to join in on a discussion with Author Nancy Martin. She will discuss how to create believable characters who carry your story. Participants will have the opportunity to share the most indelible series characters they know–their qualities, voices and how they function in a mystery. About Author Nancy Martin: Winner of the 2009 Lifetime Achievement award for mystery writing from Romantic Times magazine, Nancy Martin is the author of nearly fifty pop fiction novels in mystery, suspense, historical and romance genres. Nancy created The Blackbird Sisters in 2002---mysteries about three impoverished Main Line heiresses who adventure in couture and crime--as if “Agatha Christie had wandered onto the set of Sex and The City.” Nominated for the Agatha Award for Best First Mystery of 2002, HOW TO MURDER A MILLIONAIRE won the RT award for Best First Mystery and was a finalist for the Daphne DuMaurier Award. The 10th book in the series, LITTLE BLACK BOOK OF MURDER, was a 2012 Bookscan mystery bestseller.     This month our discussion will be On Looking: Eleven Walks with Expert Eyes by Alexandra Horowitz. Horowitz shows how to practice, as Sir Arthur Conan Doyle put it, “the observation of trifles.” The book is structured around a series of eleven walks through her Manhattan neighborhood with experts on a wide range of subjects--an urban sociologist, an artist, a geologist, a physician, and a sound designer. She also walks with a child and a dog to see the world as they perceive it. She reveals what it means to be an expert observer. Our selection for June 3rd is Frozen in Time: An Epic Story of Survival and a Modern Quest for Lost Heroes of World War II by Mitchell Zuckoff.

THE STORY OF WOLVERINE TOYS The Wolverine Supply and Manufacturing Company was founded in Pittsburgh in 1903 by Benjamin Bain. The company designed and manufactured household utensils and broom holders as well as the tools and dies to make them. Bain also found the opportunity to begin a toy manufacturing business and in 1913, he purchased property in Manchester where he constructed a large 3-story toy factory. The building still stands today. Wolverine Toy Company manufactured sturdy sand-operated mechanical tin (or pressed steel) construction-type toys for boys that would eventually be sold in major department and toy stores across the country. Eventually, Bain added vehicle toys such as trains, boats, trucks and cars that were all powered by a spring-powered motor. The company later branched out into toys for girls. Fortunately, Terry Mowrey, of the North Hills has been a collector of these fascinating toys for many years and has published a beautifully illustrated book about Wolverine Mechanical Toys which features the history of the company and the toys that many children cherished. Join Terry as he displays his collection of colorful mechanical Wolverine Toys and describes the early history of the North Side company that found great success for many years. If you have any Wolverine Toys in your possession, bring them along for others to see. If you have stories of relatives who worked for the Wolverine Company, bring those along, too.     WADJDA is a drama from Saudi Arabia. Wadjda is a fun loving ten year old girl, who has her heart set on riding a green bicycle. Her mother will not allow it fearing repercussions from a society that sees bicycles as dangerous to a girl’s virtues. Being the rebel she is, Wadjda still wants the bicycle. The school is having a Qu’ran contest and Wadjda decides to enter it with the intention of using the winnings to purchase her bike. “Wadjda” is a simple story, with many layers. The severity of life for women is freely presented with the hypocrisy of men, who are in power, exposed. Everything is done with a gentle and loving touch, as the director believes that it is better to effect change with kindness. Winner of 18 awards and 17 nominations, this is the first feature film totally shot in Saudi Arabia. It is also the first film by a Saudi women. How she made this film is almost as interesting as the film itself. Come join us. No reservation is required and refreshments will be served.
