rec_aerobics 1:00 PM Tai Chi for Beginners     Tell a Friend

Learn tai chi with instructor Kelley Brophy! Originally developed for self-defense, tai chi has evolved into a graceful form of exercise that's now used for stress reduction and a variety of other health conditions. Often described as meditation in motion, tai chi promotes serenity through gentle, flowing movements. Tai chi is an ancient Chinese tradition that, today, is practiced as a graceful form of exercise. It involves a series of movements performed in a slow, focused manner and accompanied by deep breathing. Tai chi is low impact and puts minimal stress on muscles and joints, making it generally safe for all ages and fitness levels.

misc_usflag 10:30 AM Dr. Gary Hylander, PhD - VJ Day     Tell a Friend

Dr. Gary Hylander, PhD will once again entertain and enlighten us with American history. Though the Allies celebrated the end of World War II in Europe in May of 1945 (Victory in Europe, or V-E Day), reactions were tempered by awareness of the ongoing conflict in the Pacific.

After Japanese leaders dismissed Truman's demand to accept unconditional surrender or to face "prompt and utter destruction" from the air, Truman ordered that atomic bombs be dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki on August 6th and August 9th, 1945.  Saying that the time had come to "bear the unbearable", Emperor Hirohito surrendered thus ending the most destructive war in human history. Although the United States officially commemorated this victory on September 2, by August 15 celebrations were taking place all over the United States. Dr. Hylander takes us back to the days leading up to and following the official end of WWII.

Dr. Gary Hylander, PhD is a scholar and professor who has taught at Stonehill College and Framingham State University and lectured for many cultural and educational forums including the Norton Institute for Continuing Education (NICE).

Program and refreshments sponsored by the Friends of the Norton Public Library.
