Beach Book Club meets the 1st Wednesday of each month at 10:30 a.m.

This month's book: A Tale of Two Cities by Charles Dickens

Description: 'It was the best of times, it was the worst of times'. A Tale of Two Cities, Dickens's only historical novel, sets personal happiness against the terrors of the French Revolution where the search for social justice sacrifices individual rights. Dr. Manette has emerged from eighteen years' unjust imprisonment in the Bastille: by an ironic twist of fate, his daughter Lucie's marriage draws the family into a terrifying web of circumstance which, it seems, can only end in death by the guillotine.

The Bay County Public Library will be hosting a memorable evening on February 3rd at 6 pm with “We are Charleston: Tragedy and Triumph at Mother Emanuel” authors Herb Frazier (award-winning journalist and childhood member of Mother Emanuel), Dr. Bernard Edward Powers (A.M.E. Church member and professor of history at the College of Charleston) and Marjory Wentworth (South Carolina’s Poet Laureate).

The book covers extensive interviews with family and friends of “The Emanuel Nine” – the church members who lost their lives on June 17, 2015, when a young man opened fire on a prayer meeting at the church. Learn more about the 200-year history of the Mother Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church and how the community has continually triumphed over adversity through powerful acts of love and forgiveness.

The BooksAlive “We Are Charleston” event has been organized and sponsored by the Bay County Public Library Foundation. The Bay County Public Library Foundation promotes literacy and provides cultural enrichment that enhances the Bay County Library System and strengthens the community.  Event is free and open to the public. For more information about this program and others, visit www.nwrls.com.  This after hours event will be held at the Bay County Public Library.  Check booksalive.net for additional information.

The BCPL Book Club meets on the 2nd Thursday of each month @ 10:00 a.m.

At today's meeting, we will discuss Miller's Valley by Anna Quindlen

Description: This story begins in the 1960s, and explores how Mimi Miller comes of age, over and over again. As a young girl in Miller’s Valley, an ordinary farming town that may be facing its final days, Mimi is observing adults, selling corn, growing up and changing, and watching the world around her change, too. As the years go by, the unthinkable starts to seem inevitable. Anna Quindlen’s novel takes us through the changing eras of Mimi and her family, as secrets are revealed, and the heartbreaks of growing up and falling in love with the wrong man are overcome. A deeply moving, inspiring story of a young woman learning to love and leave, the place and family from which she comes.

Today's book: The Wives of Los Alamos by TaraShea Nesbit

Description: They arrived in New Mexico ready for adventure, or at least resigned to it. But hope quickly turned to hardship as they were forced to adapt to a rugged military town where everything was a secret-including what their husbands were doing at the lab. Though they were strangers, they joined together-adapting to a landscape as fierce as it was absorbing, full of the banalities of everyday life and the drama of scientific discovery. While the bomb was being invented, babies were born, friendships were forged, children grew up, and Los Alamos gradually transformed into a real community: one that was strained by the words they couldn't say out loud or in letters, and by the freedom they didn't have. But the end of the war would bring even bigger challenges, as the scientists and their families struggled with the burden of their contribution to the most destructive force in the history of mankind. "The Wives of Los Alamos" is a testament to a remarkable group of real-life women and an exploration of a crucial, largely unconsidered aspect of one of the most monumental research projects in modern history.

Book club meets at 10:30 a.m. for an hour. Coffee or tea and a fun discussion provided.

PBS POV Film: High Tech, Low Life by Stephen Maing.  http://www.pbs.org/pov/hightechlowlife/

Book: Age of Ambition: Chasing Fortune, Truth, & Faith in New China by Evan Osnos.

Description: From abroad, we often see China as a caricature: a nation of pragmatic plutocrats and ruthlessly dedicated students destined to rule the global economy-or an addled Goliath, riddled with corruption and on the edge of stagnation. What we don't see is how both powerful and ordinary people are remaking their lives as their country dramatically changes.
As the Beijing correspondent for The New Yorker, Evan Osnos was on the ground in China for years, witness to profound political, economic, and cultural upheaval. In Age of Ambition, he describes the greatest collision taking place in that country: the clash between the rise of the individual and the Communist Party's struggle to retain control. He asks probing questions: Why does a government with more success lifting people from poverty than any civilization in history choose to put strict restraints on freedom of expression? Why do millions of young Chinese professionals-fluent in English and devoted to Western pop culture-consider themselves "angry youth," dedicated to resisting the West's influence? How are Chinese from all strata finding meaning after two decades of the relentless pursuit of wealth?
Writing with great narrative verve and a keen sense of irony, Osnos follows the moving stories of everyday people and reveals life in the new China to be a battleground between aspiration and authoritarianism, in which only one can prevail.

Refreshments will be provided by the Friends of the Bay County Libraries.  Gulf Coast State College Political Science professor and guest panelist, David Fistein, will facilitate an engaging post-film discussion.

This month's book: Everything I Never Told You by Celeste Ng

Description: “Lydia is dead. But they don’t know this yet.” So begins this exquisite novel about a Chinese American family living in 1970s small-town Ohio. Lydia is the favorite child of Marilyn and James Lee, and her parents are determined that she will fulfill the dreams they were unable to pursue. But when Lydia’s body is found in the local lake, the delicate balancing act that has been keeping the Lee family together is destroyed, tumbling them into chaos. A profoundly moving story of family, secrets, and longing, Everything I Never Told You is both a gripping page-turner and a sensitive family portrait, uncovering the ways in which mothers and daughters, fathers and sons, and husbands and wives struggle, all their lives, to understand one another.

Matthew Gurnsey, also known as The Kilted Man, will perform a concert of traditional Irish and Scottish music. The performance is free and open to the public.

Through the marriage of wit and finesse, The Kilted Man charms his audiences, sweeping them into tales of wayward voyages, unrequited love, and the vibrantly colorful lives of the every-man beloved in many Irish tales. The Kilted Man’s unique talents with traditional Celtic instruments such as the concertina, bodhran, mandolin, penny whistle, and bowed psaltery, add an air of authenticity to each piece, and his stirringly rich bass voice provides the foundation for the hauntingly beautiful melodies.

The BCPL Book Club meets on the 2nd Thursday of each month @ 10:00 a.m.

At today's meeting, we will discuss Once We Were Brothers by Ronald Balson

Description: "The gripping tale about two boys, once as close as brothers, who find themselves on opposite sides of the Holocaust."
Elliot Rosenzweig, a respected civic leader and wealthy philanthropist, is attending a fundraiser when he is suddenly accosted and accused of being a former Nazi SS officer named Otto Piatek, "the butcher of Zamosc." Although the charges are denounced as preposterous, his accuser, Ben Solomon, is convinced he is right. Solomon persuades attorney Catherine Lockhart to take his case, revealing that the true Piatek was abandoned as a child and raised by Solomons family only to betray them during the Nazi occupation. But has he accused the right man?
"Once We Were Brothers" is the compelling tale of two boys and a family who struggle to survive in war-torn Poland and a young love that incredibly endures through the unspeakable cruelty of the Holocaust. Two lives, two worlds, and sixty years converge in an explosive race to redemption that makes for an enthralling tale of love, survival, and ultimately the triumph of the human spirit.

Today's book: The Good Earth by Pearl S. Buck

Description: Though more than seventy years have passed since this remarkable novel won the Pulitzer Prize, it has retained its popularity and become one of the great modern classics. In The Good Earth Pearl S. Buck paints an indelible portrait of China in the 1920s, when the last emperor reigned and the vast political and social upheavals of the twentieth century were but distant rumblings. This moving, classic story of the honest farmer Wang Lung and his selfless wife O-Lan is must reading for those who would fully appreciate the sweeping changes that have occurred in the lives of the Chinese people during the last century.

Beach Book Club meets the 1st Wednesday of each month at 10:30 a.m.

This month's book: Symphony for the City of the Dead by MT Anderson

Description: In September 1941, Adolf Hitler's Wehrmacht surrounded Leningrad in what was to become one of the longest and most destructive sieges in Western history--almost three years of bombardment and starvation that culminated in the harsh winter of 1943-1944. More than a million citizens perished. Survivors recall corpses littering the frozen streets, their relatives having neither the means nor the strength to bury them. Residents burned books, furniture, and floorboards to keep warm; they ate family pets and--eventually--one another to stay alive. Trapped between the Nazi invading force and the Soviet government itself was composer Dmitri Shostakovich, who would write a symphony that roused, rallied, eulogized, and commemorated his fellow citizens--the "Leningrad" Symphony, which came to occupy a surprising place of prominence in the eventual Allied victory.
This is the true story of a city under siege: the triumph of bravery and defiance in the face of terrifying odds. It is also a look at the power--and layered meaning--of music in beleaguered lives. "Symphony for the City of the Dead "is a masterwork thrillingly told and impeccably researched by National Book Award-winning author M. T. Anderson.

The BCPL Book Club meets on the 2nd Thursday of each month @ 10:00 a.m.

At today's meeting, we will discuss The Truth According to Us by Annie Barrows

Description: Annie Barrows once again evokes the charm and eccentricity of a small town filled with extraordinary characters. Her new novel, "The Truth According to Us, " brings to life an inquisitive young girl, her beloved aunt, and the alluring visitor who changes the course of their destiny forever.

In the summer of 1938, Layla Beck's father, a United States senator, cuts off her allowance and demands that she find employment on the Federal Writers' Project, a New Deal jobs program. Within days, Layla finds herself far from her accustomed social whirl, assigned to cover the history of the remote mill town of Macedonia, West Virginia, and destined, in her own opinion, to go completely mad with boredom. However, once she secures a room in the home of the unconventional Romeyn family, she is completely drawn into their complex world and soon discovers that the truth of the town is deeply entangled in the thorny past of the Romeyn dynasty.

At the Romeyn house, twelve-year-old Willa is desperate to learn everything in her quest to acquire her favorite virtues--ferocity and devotion--a search that leads her into a thicket of mysteries, including the questionable business with which her charismatic father is always occupied and the reason her adored aunt Jottie never married. Layla's arrival strikes a match to the family veneer, bringing to light buried secrets that will tell a different tale about the Romeyns, and the invisible threads linking them to the heart of Macedonia's history. As Willa peels back the layers of her family's past, and Layla delves deeper into town legend, everyone involved is transformed--and their personal histories completely rewritten.

This month's book: The Widow by Fiona Barton

Description: Following the twists and turns of an unimaginable crime, The Widow is an electrifying debut thriller that will take you into the dark spaces that exist between a husband and a wife. When the police started asking questions, Jean Taylor turned into a different woman. One who enabled her and her husband to carry on when more bad things began to happen. . . But that woman's husband died last week. And Jean doesn't have to be her anymore. There's a lot Jean hasn't said over the years about the crime her husband was suspected of committing. She was too busy being the perfect wife, standing by her man while living with the accusing glares and the anonymous harassment. Now there's no reason to stay quiet. There are people who want to hear her story. They want to know what it was like living with that man. She can tell them that there were secrets. There always are in a marriage. The truth--that's all anyone wants. But the one lesson Jean has learned in the last few years is that she can make people believe anything. . .

At today's meeting, we will discuss Nutshell by Ian McEwan

Description: Trudy has betrayed her husband, John. She's still in the marital home--a dilapidated, priceless London townhouse--but John's not here. Instead, she's with his brother, the profoundly banal Claude, and the two of them have a plan. But there is a witness to their plot: the inquisitive, nine-month-old resident of Trudy's womb. Told from a perspective unlike any other, Nutshell is a classic tale of murder and deceit from one of the world's master storytellers.

Today's book: Just Mercy: a Story of Justice and Redemption by Bryan Stevenson

Description: After graduating from Harvard Law School in 1988, Stevenson traveled to Alabama, where speeded-up executions were threatening the very concept of justice as many of those condemned were too poor or disempowered to secure legal representation. To help such people, he founded the Equal Justice Initiative. From a MacArthur fellow and TED talker with a million-plus hits.

Book club meets at 10:30 a.m. for an hour. Coffee or tea and a fun discussion provided.

We will read The Fault in Our Stars by John Green and watch the film of the same name.

Description: Despite the tumor-shrinking medical miracle that has bought her a few years, Hazel has never been anything but terminal, her final chapter inscribed upon diagnosis. But when a gorgeous plot twist named Augustus Waters suddenly appears at Cancer Kid Support Group, Hazel’s story is about to be completely rewritten.  Insightful, bold, irreverent, and raw, The Fault in Our Stars brilliantly explores the funny, thrilling, and tragic business of being alive and in love.

Refreshments will be provided by the Friends of the Bay County Libraries.
