Once NaNoWriMo is over, what comes next? Well, there's rewrites, revision and edits, and then you might be ready to publish. Today, loads of people are successfully self-publishing.

Three members of The Syndicate will lead a workshop on that next step. Mark BossJayson Kretzer and Tony Simmons will discuss what elements go into designing a book cover, what works on different platforms and why, and will take you through the steps of indie publishing.

Expect some refreshments and music along the way. They will also have copies of their latest published work for you to sample and/or purchase (just in time for Christmas!). And don't forget to sign up for the monthly newsletter.

Bring questions, and something with which to take notes.

Beach Book Club meets the 1st Wednesday of each month at 10:30 a.m.

This month's book: Walking with Abel: Journeys with the Nomads of the African Savannah by Anna Badkhen

Description: The author embeds herself with a family of Fulani cowboys -- nomadic herders in Mali's Sahel grasslands -- as they embark on their annual migration across the savannah. It's a cycle that connects the Fulani to their past even as their present is increasingly under threat -- from Islamic militants, climate change, and the ever-encroaching urbanization that lures away their young. The Fulani, though, are no strangers to uncertainty -- brilliantly resourceful and resilient, they've contended with famines, droughts, and wars for centuries.

The BCPL Book Club meets on the 2nd Thursday of each month @ 10:00 a.m.

At today's meeting, we will discuss Howard's End by E.M. Forster

Description: The disregard of a dying woman's bequest, a girl's attempt to help an impoverished clerk, and the marriage of an idealist and a materialist — all intersect at an estate called Howards End. The fate of this country home symbolizes the future of England in an exploration of social, economic, and philosophical trends during the post-Victorian era.

Today's book: The Hired Girl by Laura Amy Schlitz and How to Speak Dolphin by Ginny Rorby

Description of The Hired Girl:  Fourteen-year-old Joan Skraggs, just like the heroines in her beloved novels, yearns for real life and true love. But what hope is there for adventure, beauty, or art on a hardscrabble farm in Pennsylvania where the work never ends? Over the summer of 1911, Joan pours her heart out into her diary as she seeks a new, better life for herself because maybe, just maybe, a hired girl cleaning and cooking for six dollars a week can become what a farm girl could only dream of a woman with a future. (Inspired by the author's own grandmother's journal.)

Description of How to Speak Dolphin: Since her mother died, twelve-year-old Lily has struggled to care for her severely autistic half-brother, Adam, in their Miami home, but she is frustrated and angry because her oncologist step-father, Don, expects her to devote her time to Adam, and is unwilling to admit that Adam needs professional help--but when Adam bonds with a young dolphin with cancer Lily is confronted with another dilemma: her family or the dolphin's freedom.

Description: On Christmas Eve, 1914, as German, French, and Scottish regiments face each other from their respective trenches, a musical call-and-response turns into an impromptu cease-fire, trading chocolates and champagne, playing soccer, and comparing pictures of their wives. But when Christmas ends, the war returns.

Today's book: A Homemade Life by Molly Wizenberg

Description: An irresistible story of cooking that goes beyond the kitchen: Molly Wizenberg shares stories of an everyday life and a way of eating that is inspiring, playful, and mindful. From her father s French toast to her husband Brandon s pickles to her chocolate wedding cakes, A Homemade Life is a story about the lessons we can learn in the kitchen: who we are, who we love, and who we want to be..
Delicious homemade food: The fifty recipes that accompany Molly s writing are an integral part of her story; she connects food to the people who cook and eat it. Full of fresh flavors, these dishes invite novices and experienced cooks alike into the kitchen. .

Book club meets at 10:30 a.m. for an hour. Coffee or tea and a fun discussion provided.

We will read The Book Thief by Markus Zusak and watch the film with the same name.

Description:  It is 1939. Nazi Germany. The country is holding its breath. Death has never been busier, and will become busier still.
Liesel Meminger is a foster girl living outside of Munich, who scratches out a meager existence for herself by stealing when she encounters something she can't resist-books. With the help of her accordion-playing foster father, she learns to read and shares her stolen books with her neighbors during bombing raids as well as with the Jewish man hidden in her basement.
In superbly crafted writing that burns with intensity, award-winning author Markus Zusak, author of "I Am the Messenger, " has given us one of the most enduring stories of our time.

Refreshments will be provided by the Friends of the Bay County Libraries.

Today's book: The Wives of Los Alamos by TaraShea Nesbit

Description: They arrived in New Mexico ready for adventure, or at least resigned to it. But hope quickly turned to hardship as they were forced to adapt to a rugged military town where everything was a secret-including what their husbands were doing at the lab. Though they were strangers, they joined together-adapting to a landscape as fierce as it was absorbing, full of the banalities of everyday life and the drama of scientific discovery. While the bomb was being invented, babies were born, friendships were forged, children grew up, and Los Alamos gradually transformed into a real community: one that was strained by the words they couldn't say out loud or in letters, and by the freedom they didn't have. But the end of the war would bring even bigger challenges, as the scientists and their families struggled with the burden of their contribution to the most destructive force in the history of mankind. "The Wives of Los Alamos" is a testament to a remarkable group of real-life women and an exploration of a crucial, largely unconsidered aspect of one of the most monumental research projects in modern history.

PBS POV Film: High Tech, Low Life by Stephen Maing.  http://www.pbs.org/pov/hightechlowlife/

The book that will be read for this month is Age of Ambition: Chasing Fortune, Truth, & Faith in New China by Evan Osnos.

Description: From abroad, we often see China as a caricature: a nation of pragmatic plutocrats and ruthlessly dedicated students destined to rule the global economy-or an addled Goliath, riddled with corruption and on the edge of stagnation. What we don't see is how both powerful and ordinary people are remaking their lives as their country dramatically changes.
As the Beijing correspondent for The New Yorker, Evan Osnos was on the ground in China for years, witness to profound political, economic, and cultural upheaval. In Age of Ambition, he describes the greatest collision taking place in that country: the clash between the rise of the individual and the Communist Party's struggle to retain control. He asks probing questions: Why does a government with more success lifting people from poverty than any civilization in history choose to put strict restraints on freedom of expression? Why do millions of young Chinese professionals-fluent in English and devoted to Western pop culture-consider themselves "angry youth," dedicated to resisting the West's influence? How are Chinese from all strata finding meaning after two decades of the relentless pursuit of wealth?
Writing with great narrative verve and a keen sense of irony, Osnos follows the moving stories of everyday people and reveals life in the new China to be a battleground between aspiration and authoritarianism, in which only one can prevail.

Refreshments will be provided by the Friends of the Bay County Libraries.  Gulf Coast State College Political Science professor and guest panelist, David Fistein, will facilitate an engaging post-film discussion.

Matthew Gurnsey delights audiences of all age groups with his rousing performances of traditional Irish and Scottish music. His unique talents with traditional and rare Celtic instruments such as the concertina, bodhran, bones, mandolin, penny whistle, and bowed psaltery, add an air of authenticity to each piece and his stirringly rich bass voice provides the foundation for the hauntingly beautiful melodies. Today's book: The Good Earth by Pearl S. Buck

Description: Though more than seventy years have passed since this remarkable novel won the Pulitzer Prize, it has retained its popularity and become one of the great modern classics. In The Good Earth Pearl S. Buck paints an indelible portrait of China in the 1920s, when the last emperor reigned and the vast political and social upheavals of the twentieth century were but distant rumblings. This moving, classic story of the honest farmer Wang Lung and his selfless wife O-Lan is must reading for those who would fully appreciate the sweeping changes that have occurred in the lives of the Chinese people during the last century.

Book club meets at 10:30 a.m. for an hour. Coffee or tea and a fun discussion provided.
