misc_none 9:00 AM  -  9:00 AM Photography Exhibit by G.L. Sarti Remind Me about this Event   Tell a Friend
    Contact: Dixie Anderson    412.828.9532

Photographs by G.L. Sarti will be on display on our lower level through the month of April.  From G.L. Sarti:
The Last 20 or 30 years I have acquired experiences in the field of microfilming which some of you may recognize as form of photography. It has been only since 2002 that I began to take an interest in nature photography. In reality, I believe god had a hand in my pursuing nature photography. I have always had an interest in nature. I was drawn to it. As time went on I began reading and teaching myself the finer points of photography. A few photographer friends guided me with camera techniques and scene composition. Entering shows for prizes is not my goal but do appreciate any that I have received. My work is exhibited so others can share in god's creations. I am convinced it takes someone greater than I to have created the simplest of plants to the greatness of earth and our universe.
The most important point that everyone that looks at my work needs to know is that most of my original photographs are taken in their natural setting. My work is generally not staged in any way. On occasion, I will take an individual photograph and apply an artistic touch to try and create an interesting piece of work.
In the past few years, I have hiked through the natural areas of Prescott, AZ., Hilton Head Island, South Carolina shores, and the area of Sarasota, FL. Ten days were spent photographing various areas of the National Parks through Utah, Montana, Wyoming, N. Dakota, and S. Dakota.
In my home area of Western Pennsylvania, I have and continue to hike through the Pennsylvania Natural areas in the Laurel Highlands. Along the way, every opportunity is taken to photograph landscapes, wildflowers, and wildlife. Pursuing water falls throughout the Tr-State area is a continued goal. The latest being the 21 water falls in the Ricketts Glen State Park, Eastern Pennsylvania.
In addition to Nature Photography, I am moving into a new area called macro photography emphasizing light.

    Contact: Robin Almendinger   412-828-9532   almendingerr@einetwork.net

From the book "Hidden Figures: The American Dream and the Untold Story of the Black Women Mathematicians Who Helped Win the Space Race" by Margot Lee Shetterly. In the early days of the "Space Race" with the Soviet Union, the American space program, headquartered at Langley Memorial Aeronautical Laboratory in Virginia, employed "computers" - human beings with pencils, slide rules and adding machines whose efforts helped to send the first American into space. One group of these computers were black women, who had to prove themselves while working under the burden of segregation. This movie chronicles the challenges they faced and the ultimate successes of three of these brilliant women over three decades as they contributed to NASA's successes.

Our Death Cafes are always offered:

- In an accessible, respectful and confidential space

- With no intention of leading people to any conclusion, product or course of action

- Alongside refreshing drinks and nourishing food – and cake!
 - Doors open at 6:30, conversation will begin at 7:00. We will provide coffee, tea, plates, and napkins. Please bring a handheld dessert like cupcakes or cookies or some fruit to share. Parking is available in the Panera Bread lot or along the street.

The whole population moves once every six years (on average).  Packing is moving's money maker, yet with some instruction you can do it yourself.  Oakmont's Bongo Tommie was a 27 year career mover.  He worked for Allied, Mayflower, and United Van lines.  With United, he was on several award winning teams.  He "ran" the East Coast near 7 years and was self-employed as a commission contractor for 5 years.  He knows the moving game and can save you money no matter how far you are moving.  He will show you how to properly pack a dishbarrel carton with many hints on stemware, glassware and paintings, even oil paintings.  He will have an array of cartons and packing material for demonstration purposes.  He will be open to all thoughtful questions.  Like anything, the more you know, the better off you will be.  Please join him on Saturday, June 17th at 10:00 am for this instructive seminar!

Have you ever been curious about bees?  What beekeepers do?  Why bees are important to our ecosystem and the environment?  How honey is made?  Come to the library to learn about bees and beekeeping in Allegheny County with Master Beekeeper Joseph Zgurzynski of Country Barn Farm, in O'Hara Township!  Our summer reading program this year is "Building a Better World" - come learn how bees contribute!

Joe is a Master Beekeeper. This certification is obtained by passing a comprehensive exam, in this case, administered by the Eastern Apicultural Society of North America. The purpose of the Master Beekeeper certification program is to identify and certify people who have a detailed knowledge of honey bee biology, expertise in the proper practices of beekeeping, and can present this information to the beekeeping and non-beekeeping public in a detailed, accurate, clear and authoritative manner.  Master Beekeeper Joe Zgurzynski also has a BS in Biology from Richard Stockton College, an MS in Public Health from the University of Pittsburgh and an MBA from Carnegie Mellon University.

He is a past president and current member of Burgh Bees in Pittsburgh, PA, as well as a member of the Beaver Valley Area Beekeepers Association, the Western PA Beekeeping Seminar Committee, Pennsylvania State Beekeepers Association and the Eastern Apicultural Society of North America. He takes an active role mentoring new beekeepers and regularly teaches beekeeping workshops.

Join Louise Sturgess, Executive Director of the Pittsburgh History and Landmarks Foundation, at the library!  This presentation of 72 images, so rich in detail, was created in 2008 for the Frick Art & Historical Center’s exhibition, “A Panorama of Pittsburgh: Nineteenth-Century Printed Views.” Following an overview of Pittsburgh’s physical development, the presentation concentrates on a series of 19th-century lithographs, watercolors, prints, and even a letter that were made to describe, publicize, and promote the city. It concludes with a fast-paced tour of 21st-century Pittsburgh, showing how the 19th-century lives on in notable landmarks. Memorable quotations from David McCullough (author/historian), Walter C. Kidney (author), David Lewis (urban planner), and Clyde Hare (photographer), among others, help define Pittsburgh’s unique character and significance.

Our theme for summer reading this year is "Building a Better World" - come learn about how early Pittsburghers built a better city!

Each month, we will select a cookbook and display it at the programming table. Look through the book and choose a recipe you want to make. Mark the page with a post-it note with your name so that we know who will be cooking what. Ask a library staff member to copy the recipe for you to take home. Prepare your food or beverage and bring it to Cookbook Club, which will take place on the second Monday of every month at 6PM at the library. Tableware will be provided. Food, new friends, and fun! Please join us and start cooking !
