They are not professional artists, but are learning and exploring the art world and perhaps with hard work and determination, some will be professionals in the future and you can say, "I knew them when.........."

    Contact: Stephanie Zimble   412.828.9532   zimbles@einetwork.net

Join local author Gerald Miller at the library as he talks about his new book Anna's Journey!  Taking place from the 1930s to the 1960s, readers who grew up in Pittsburgh will fondly remember the department stores and locations dotting this story.

What happens when an eighty-four-year-old woman gains legal guardianship of a ten-year-old boy? You get a story that will melt your heart and the reassurance that love often comes at the most unexpected times and during the most difficult of circumstances.

Anna Wilson is, by all appearances, an old spinster, but when young neighbor Robby Tate comes into her life, everything changes. At first, the young boy and Anna strike up an unlikely friendship when she hires him to do chores around the house; however, when tragedy strikes Robby at home, fate brings this unlikely pair together in an unexpected way, and nothing will ever tear them apart or will it?
With a cast of characters as diverse as they come, they all learn one very important thing along the way: being loved gives you strength, but loving someone gives you courage.
So, settle in with a hot cup of tea, and come along on Anna s Journey.

Join us at the library for a special event - Longwood's own "Octavia Long" will be here!  Have you heard about the latest book local to Oakmont?  It's called "Where's Laura?" and was written by "Octavia Long"!  Who is "Octavia Long"?  From the Trib Live article about the book: "The debut mystery novel (Word Association Publishers, Tarentum) was written by eight residents of the Longwood at Oakmont retirement community who became known to other residents, noticing their lively conversations and laughter, as the Tuesday Table Ladies. It was introduced Dec. 1 at the “A Gathering of Authors” event in Oakmont sponsored by Word Association. The women chose the pseudonym of Octavia (as in “eight”) Long (as in “Longwood) to represent them."  Read more here: http://triblive.com/aande/books/11537916-74/says-table-ladies

We're so happy to welcome some of the authors to the library!  Come down, listen to their story, and pick up a copy of this great new mystery!

Spring Time is Baby Time!  Join us at the Verner Elementary School Pop-Up location as we welcome the Animal Rescue League Shelter and Wildlife Center!  Learn why most baby animals are born in the spring.  Springtime is a busy time of year for the Wildlife Center.  In this program you will learn about the many babies that we care for every spring. This program lasts approximately 45 minutes and is suggested for students from 1st to 5th grade, but adults can learn something too!

We did this program last year and had a great turn-out!  If you missed it, now is your chance to welcome spring and learn about local wildlife!  This program includes a visit by a LIVE animal ambassador!

Core messages delivered in the GiRLiFE curriculum:

* The thoughts we choose to feed our minds are the most powerful tools we have to live a happy and healthy life.

* Girls who truly believe themselves and understand the influence of their own personal power, or happier, more confident, and experience peace in their lives and relationships.

* The opportunities are truly endless for a young girl when she understands that she is capable of living a life beyond the limits of her imagination. To register or more information please contact Nikki Watson at:  nicolemariewatson@gmail.com

Each month, we will select a cookbook and display it at the programming table. Look through the book and choose a recipe you want to make. Mark the page with a post-it note with your name so that we know who will be cooking what. Ask a library staff member to copy the recipe for you to take home. Prepare your food or beverage and bring it to Cookbook Club, which will take place on the second Monday of every month at 6PM at the library. Tableware will be provided. Food, new friends, and fun! Please join us and start cooking !

When Mildred (black) and Richard (white) fell in love in Virginia in 1958, people frowned and talked. But when they married, they committed the crime of miscegenation, and were promptly arrested. Though forced to leave Virginia and their families, they refused to surrender their love. Eventually, their case was taken up by the ACLU and went all the way to the Supreme Court, making their union legal at last and opening the door to interracial marriage. This gripping drama stars Joel Edgerton and Ruth Negga. Rated PG-13, 2 hr.

This is a mind and body group for young girls aged 8-10 that emphasizes principles of self-love, personal power and the beauty that comes from allowing your light to shine from within.  The program will run the first Staurday of each month for 6 months.  There will be a small fee for supplies ($20.00)

Through open dialogue, thought-provoking crafts and healthy nutrition projects, GiRLiFE Workshops create a safe space where girls can honor their individuality while embracing each-other's

From the book "Hidden Figures: The American Dream and the Untold Story of the Black Women Mathematicians Who Helped Win the Space Race" by Margot Lee Shetterly. In the early days of the "Space Race" with the Soviet Union, the American space program, headquartered at Langley Memorial Aeronautical Laboratory in Virginia, employed "computers" - human beings with pencils, slide rules and adding machines whose efforts helped to send the first American into space. One group of these computers were black women, who had to prove themselves while working under the burden of segregation. This movie chronicles the challenges they faced and the ultimate successes of three of these brilliant women over three decades as they contributed to NASA's successes.

Do you love to browse through cookbooks and try new recipes? Are you a foodie? Would you like to meet new people and share food with them? Then this is the club for you!
