    Contact: Stephanie Zimble   412.828.9532   zimbles@einetwork.net

Join us at the library for our featured art exhibit during the month of June!  From the artist:

Meet the artist:

Duffy Greba

My name is Duffy Greba. I live in Greensburg, PA. I do cross stitch and quilting to create my pictures and household items, such as quilts, table toppers, placemats, and many other items.  I started to cross stitch by doing baby quilts for my family and friends. I further expanded my cross stitching by making pictures of the United States, Bible verses, Native American scenes, along with Celtic and all holidays such as Halloween and Christmas. I started these pictures about 10 years ago.

My quilts combine cross stitching and patchwork which I started about 4 years ago.  I was introduced to 2 local quilters in my area and they have showed me many ways to combine my love of cross stitch to make many beautiful quilts. I started working with patchwork quilts about 2 years ago.  They showed me how to make patchwork table toppers, place mats and potholders.

I am a veteran of the United States Navy of 14 years, (Desert Storm and Southern Watch) and husband and father of 2 children.

I hope you like our items. All items can be special ordered to your liking. Please contact me with any questions or to discuss special orders:  degreba2011@hotmail.com  724-205-6385.

Have you ever been curious about bees?  What beekeepers do?  Why bees are important to our ecosystem and the environment?  How honey is made?  Come to the library to learn about bees and beekeeping in Allegheny County with Master Beekeeper Joseph Zgurzynski of Country Barn Farm, in O'Hara Township!  Our summer reading program this year is "Building a Better World" - come learn how bees contribute!

Joe is a Master Beekeeper. This certification is obtained by passing a comprehensive exam, in this case, administered by the Eastern Apicultural Society of North America. The purpose of the Master Beekeeper certification program is to identify and certify people who have a detailed knowledge of honey bee biology, expertise in the proper practices of beekeeping, and can present this information to the beekeeping and non-beekeeping public in a detailed, accurate, clear and authoritative manner.  Master Beekeeper Joe Zgurzynski also has a BS in Biology from Richard Stockton College, an MS in Public Health from the University of Pittsburgh and an MBA from Carnegie Mellon University.

He is a past president and current member of Burgh Bees in Pittsburgh, PA, as well as a member of the Beaver Valley Area Beekeepers Association, the Western PA Beekeeping Seminar Committee, Pennsylvania State Beekeepers Association and the Eastern Apicultural Society of North America. He takes an active role mentoring new beekeepers and regularly teaches beekeeping workshops.

    Contact: Stephanie Zimble   412.828.9532   zimbles@einetwork.net

Join Louise Sturgess, Executive Director of the Pittsburgh History and Landmarks Foundation, at the library!  This presentation of 72 images, so rich in detail, was created in 2008 for the Frick Art & Historical Center’s exhibition, “A Panorama of Pittsburgh: Nineteenth-Century Printed Views.” Following an overview of Pittsburgh’s physical development, the presentation concentrates on a series of 19th-century lithographs, watercolors, prints, and even a letter that were made to describe, publicize, and promote the city. It concludes with a fast-paced tour of 21st-century Pittsburgh, showing how the 19th-century lives on in notable landmarks. Memorable quotations from David McCullough (author/historian), Walter C. Kidney (author), David Lewis (urban planner), and Clyde Hare (photographer), among others, help define Pittsburgh’s unique character and significance.

Our theme for summer reading this year is "Building a Better World" - come learn about how early Pittsburghers built a better city!

    Contact: Stephanie Zimble   412.828.9532   zimbles@einetwork.net

Come down to the library on August 26 at 1:00 PM to meet Terri Bertha as she talks about her first book in her Spooky Twisties series!  Terri’s lived her entire life in western PA, and worked mainly as a Systems Engineer for a large corporation. She took a hiatus from work when her sons were born, and then returned to the workforce and retired a few years ago.

Spooky Twisties I began with one story about a group of kids that go out to play their annual game of ghosts in the graveyard.  This story eventually led to others and became the Spooky Twisties Series.  Come hear about Amy, Nick, Chris and Lindsay, and friends, and their supernatural adventures with creepy characters, and twisted surprise endings. Join Terri as she reads excerpts from Spooky Twisties I and answers your “scary” questions!

Copies of the book will be available for purchase.  This event is free and open to the public.  All ages are welcome.  Refreshments will be served.

    Contact: Robin Almendinger   412-828-9532   almendingerr@einetwork.net

Set in 1947-55, "A United Kingdom" retells the true story of the meeting, marriage, and personal struggles of Seretse Khama (David Oyelowo), the hereditary ruler of the British Protectorate of Botswanaland, and British citizen Ruth Williams Khama (Rosamund Pike). When the two fall in love, they find that they must confront not only widespread prejudice against bi-racial marriage (on both sides of the color line), but also the waning power of British colonialism with its paternalist presumption of the moral and political superiority of British aristocracy in a changing world. It is both a love story and a fascinating look at a critical time in African history.
