    Contact: Stephanie Zimble   412.828.9532   zimbles@einetwork.net

Join us at the library for a special event - Longwood's own "Octavia Long" will be here!  Have you heard about the latest book local to Oakmont?  It's called "Where's Laura?" and was written by "Octavia Long"!  Who is "Octavia Long"?  From the Trib Live article about the book: "The debut mystery novel (Word Association Publishers, Tarentum) was written by eight residents of the Longwood at Oakmont retirement community who became known to other residents, noticing their lively conversations and laughter, as the Tuesday Table Ladies. It was introduced Dec. 1 at the “A Gathering of Authors” event in Oakmont sponsored by Word Association. The women chose the pseudonym of Octavia (as in “eight”) Long (as in “Longwood) to represent them."  Read more here: http://triblive.com/aande/books/11537916-74/says-table-ladies

We're so happy to welcome some of the authors to the library!  Come down, listen to their story, and pick up a copy of this great new mystery!

misc_none 9:00 AM  -  9:00 AM Photography Exhibit by G.L. Sarti Remind Me about this Event   Tell a Friend
    Contact: Dixie Anderson    412.828.9532

Photographs by G.L. Sarti will be on display on our lower level through the month of April.  From G.L. Sarti:
The Last 20 or 30 years I have acquired experiences in the field of microfilming which some of you may recognize as form of photography. It has been only since 2002 that I began to take an interest in nature photography. In reality, I believe god had a hand in my pursuing nature photography. I have always had an interest in nature. I was drawn to it. As time went on I began reading and teaching myself the finer points of photography. A few photographer friends guided me with camera techniques and scene composition. Entering shows for prizes is not my goal but do appreciate any that I have received. My work is exhibited so others can share in god's creations. I am convinced it takes someone greater than I to have created the simplest of plants to the greatness of earth and our universe.
The most important point that everyone that looks at my work needs to know is that most of my original photographs are taken in their natural setting. My work is generally not staged in any way. On occasion, I will take an individual photograph and apply an artistic touch to try and create an interesting piece of work.
In the past few years, I have hiked through the natural areas of Prescott, AZ., Hilton Head Island, South Carolina shores, and the area of Sarasota, FL. Ten days were spent photographing various areas of the National Parks through Utah, Montana, Wyoming, N. Dakota, and S. Dakota.
In my home area of Western Pennsylvania, I have and continue to hike through the Pennsylvania Natural areas in the Laurel Highlands. Along the way, every opportunity is taken to photograph landscapes, wildflowers, and wildlife. Pursuing water falls throughout the Tr-State area is a continued goal. The latest being the 21 water falls in the Ricketts Glen State Park, Eastern Pennsylvania.
In addition to Nature Photography, I am moving into a new area called macro photography emphasizing light.

Classic dystopian fiction is a genre that remains popular, is still read in schools, and is still widely read by lots of adults!  What makes a book 'dystopian'?  What's the difference between classic titles written in the 1930s, 40s, and 50s and current series like the Hunger Games?  1984, Animal Farm, Brave New World, Lord of the Flies - Should we still read them?  Why are they ‘classics’?
Join librarian Stephanie Zimble for a book talk about themes and content of dystopian novels.
Even if you haven’t read any of these titles recently, come join the discussion!

When Mildred (black) and Richard (white) fell in love in Virginia in 1958, people frowned and talked. But when they married, they committed the crime of miscegenation, and were promptly arrested. Though forced to leave Virginia and their families, they refused to surrender their love. Eventually, their case was taken up by the ACLU and went all the way to the Supreme Court, making their union legal at last and opening the door to interracial marriage. This gripping drama stars Joel Edgerton and Ruth Negga. Rated PG-13, 2 hr.

Each month, we will select a cookbook and display it at the programming table. Look through the book and choose a recipe you want to make. Mark the page with a post-it note with your name so that we know who will be cooking what. Ask a library staff member to copy the recipe for you to take home. From the book "Hidden Figures: The American Dream and the Untold Story of the Black Women Mathematicians Who Helped Win the Space Race" by Margot Lee Shetterly. In the early days of the "Space Race" with the Soviet Union, the American space program, headquartered at Langley Memorial Aeronautical Laboratory in Virginia, employed "computers" - human beings with pencils, slide rules and adding machines whose efforts helped to send the first American into space. One group of these computers were black women, who had to prove themselves while working under the burden of segregation. This movie chronicles the challenges they faced and the ultimate successes of three of these brilliant women over three decades as they contributed to NASA's successes.
