elect_computer_apple 2:30 PM  -  3:30 PM AppCertain: Child Security for Apps on Apple Devices Remind Me about this Event   Tell a Friend
    Contact: Kathy Sutton   412-452-5420   ksutton114@yahoo.com
Do you have an iPhone, iPad or iPod? Are your children playing games on these devices? Do they have devices of their own? Mobile devices are so user friendly that even infants can be entertained for long periods of time. It may seem innocent enough but parents are often unaware of the dangers to be found on simple game apps. It is quite common for children to make in-app purchases hidden behind free apps without even realizing what they are doing. There are also apps that contain subliminal messaging, inappropriate content and tracking devices that can pinpoint the whereabouts of your child at all times. It is a scary world we live in so it helps to have as much protection as possible. Spencer Whitman has an extensive background in cyber security and saw a need for a monitoring service on mobile devices. He has combined his years experience and research to create a free service for users of this ever changing technology. He is the co-founder of AppCertain, which is a spinoff of Carnegie Mellon where Spencer received his Masters in Electrical and Computer Engineering and a BS in Computer Science. Take this opportunity to hear an informative presentation about one of the most cutting edge new companies in Pittsburgh. Spencer will be available for one on one instruction with your personal devices and will be glad to answer any questions.

food_salad 6:00 PM  -  8:30 PM 2nd Annual Taste of Two Towns Remind Me about this Event   Tell a Friend
    Contact: Beth Mellor   412-828-9532
The Oakmont Library Board of Trustees cordially invites you to attend A TASTE OF TWO TOWNS - A sampling of specialty foods prepared by Oakmont and Verona Chefs. In response to popular demand – and because the initial Taste of Two Towns was such a roaring success, we’re delighted to announce that this year’s event will happen on Sunday May 19th, from 6 to 8:30 pm. Once again the Oakmont Library will be transformed into a buzzing bistro , featuring sample dishes from the top restaurants of Oakmont and Verona. The gala’s libations -- wine, beer, soda, water -- are included in your donation of $50 per person. Not only will you experience a delightful evening in a splendid setting, your participation will also help our jewel of a library to shine even brighter. What a fun way to keep the Oakmont Library, a vital community resource, on the cutting edge. Last year’s proceeds were used to: repair plaster on the 1901 side of the library; update the phone system and Wi-Fi; deepen our travel and career collections and expand the Youth Services position. You'll soon see forms around town and at the library to fill out and return with your donation - we hope to see you there!

Contact: Robin Almendinger, Adult Programming Coordinator   412.828.9532   almendingerr@einetwork.net
Learn meditation with simple techniques and recognize the peace, beauty, joy within. At the sessions, in the first half we try to understand the subtle science behind this meditation and in the next half we meditate. The session is 1 hr long. Walk ins are welcome and there is no fee to attend the sessions. Practiced for thousands of years, meditation was once recognized as a means for understanding the spiritual and mystical sides of life. Today it's frequently used to reduce stress and create a tranquil mind. According to the Mayo Clinic, there is an increasing amount of scientific research supporting the health benefits of meditation. Speaking from her own experience, Dr. Vijayvargiya has witnessed examples of improved health conditions when patients included meditation in their regimen of care, especially for those with high blood pressure and coronary artery disease. It can also ease the anxiety and other effects associated with chemotherapy.

Do you love to browse through cookbooks and try new recipes? Are you a foodie? Would you like to meet new people and share food with them? Then this is the club for you! Each month, we will select a cookbook and display it at the programming table. Look through the book and choose a recipe you want to make. Mark the page with a post-it note with your name so that we know who will be cooking what. Ask a library staff member to copy the recipe for you to take home. Prepare your food or beverage and bring it to Cookbook Club, which will take place on the second Monday of every month at 6PM at the library. Tableware will be provided. Food, new friends, and fun! Please join us and start cooking !
