misc_none 6:30 PM  -  8:00 PM Cheryl Pula Presentation – Saved!: The Saga of the USS Indianapolis     Tell a Friend

In July 1945, the cruised U.S.S.Indianapolis was tasked with delivering the components of the world’s first atomic bomb to the island of Tinian in the Pacific. After doing so, she was on her way to the Philippines when she was torpedoed and sunk by a Japanese submarine. Over 900 crew survived, but spent five days adrift until picked up. By then only a few over 300 were left. Why weren’t they picked up sooner? What happened to the 600 who perished? This program will discuss these questions.

ent_note 2:00 PM  -  3:00 PM NOPL at North Syracuse Concert Series: Dave Robertson     Tell a Friend

Join us for a solo acoustic performance by the talented David Robertson of Limestone Crick! Dave Robertson is an East Syracuse-based singer-songwriter, performing many of his own compelling, modern folk originals as well as covers of Neil Young, John Prine, Ryan Adams, Townes Van Zandt, Steve Earle, and Cat Stevens. Robertson pens socially conscious lyrics, witnessed in songs such as ‘All Goes Well” which captures the thoughts of a young man seeking adventure but now fighting a war in Afghanistan; and in ‘Migrant Road,’ the story of a young Mexican boy needing (not wanting) to leave his homeland in search of work in the States.

rec_paintpalette02 9:00 AM  -  5:00 PM Art Exhibit: Soul as Image Maker     Tell a Friend

Terry McMaster brings us the “Soul as Image Maker” exhibit. Carl Jung is McMaster’s primary spiritual mentor.  He states, “I was drawn to [Jung’s] work because it is all about soul making, and somehow I knew that that was my path in life.  He said that the soul’s main function is to produce images.  These images come to us in the form of dreams, and they arise in painting, poetry, drawing, dance, story and song.  All of the arts are an expression of soul, and we are all connected through soul.  Jung said ‘The soul is not in us; we are in the Soul.’”

McMaster’s art is created spontaneously, so that the unconscious can speak.  He tries to limit intention, thought and plan as much as possible.  He lets the image emerge without knowing beforehand what it will be.  This is especially true in his paintings.  As Jung explains in his writings, symbolic imagery exists within all of us, and it emerges spontaneously if we learn how to allow and value it.  It is McMaster’s path to allow it to emerge, witness it, enjoy it and in some instances interpret it. McMaster tell: “I am always looking to discover the vibratory world, the unseen invisible matrix that exists around me and within me.  And I am called to teach others about this.”

ent_note 6:30 PM  -  8:00 PM Stories and Songs of Love and Transformation     Tell a Friend

It is said that storytelling in the old Celtic tradition happened between Samhain (Halloween) and  Beltaine (Nov. 1st to May 1st).  Petit Library, in keeping with the Halloween season, will hold this  event on October 22. Terry McMaster will perform traditional stories and songs from Celtic, Russian  and other traditions.  Included this evening will be the Welsh story “The Birth of Taliesin” and the  Russian story “Vasilisa the Beautiful.”  He will share a song in the Medieval Irish language  attributed to St. Patrick, and demonstrate how the saint took the shape of a deer to disguise  himself from his enemies.

Terry traveled to Celtic lands in 1997, visiting the northern area of County Clare where his Irish- speaking great-grandparents came from.  He then visited the western islands of Scotland near to  where the McMasters lived in the 17th century, prior to their emigration to Ulster in the Kingdom of  Ireland, where he attended a ten-day training in Celtic Shamanism. He will bring to us his  experiences and history through these stories and songs.
