food_fortunecookie 9:00 AM  -  5:00 PM Are you a Smart Cookie? Prove It!     Tell a Friend

Beauchamp Branch Smart Cookies are kids who use the library! They check out books, get homework help from tutors in the library, and they talk to librarians about books they like to read. On December Holiday break, smart cookies will get to attend a special Cooking Up Literacy where they will make… cookies!

Beginning on September 1st, every day that kids 12 and under check out a children’s book at Beauchamp, they earn 1 cookie point towards the Smart Cookie Cooking Up Literacy. Kids can earn additional points by attending Beauchamp Branch library programs, getting homework help in the library, and talking to a librarian about a book they read that week. Once they have earned 30 cookie points (don’t worry, the library will keep track for you!), they will be able to register for the Smart Cookie Cooking Up Literacy!

Learning about Islam and Reaching Across Faith Divides:  Americans Respond to 9/11
A lecture by Dr. Allison Stokes, Founding Director, Women’s Interfaith Institute

This slide lecture examines efforts during the past decade to combat  stereotypes and broaden understanding across faith traditions. Special  attention will be given to developments within New York State--including  the founding of Women Transcending Boundaries in Syracuse.   Controversial projects--the proposed Islamic center near Ground Zero, for  example--and the tensions created will be examined in historical context.  The lecturer will draw upon interdisciplinary, American Studies research in  her presentation.

“The Iroquois (Haudenosaunee) Influence on Women's Rights”
A lecture by Dr. Sally Roesch Wagner, Founding Director, Matilda Joslyn Gage Foundation

Imagine that women had the right to choose all political representatives and to remove from office anyone who didn't address the wishes and needs of the people.  Haudenosaunee (traditional Iroquois) women have had that responsibility and more, since long before Columbus came to these shores.  Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Matilda Joslyn Gage, the two major theoreticians of the early women's rights movement, had direct knowledge of the Haudenosaunee, writing about the superior social, political, religious, and economic status of women in the Iroquois nations.  Their work for women's rights, Wagner argues, was inspired by the vision they received from the Haudenosaunee of gender balance and harmony.
