Throughout February

Quilting is a time-honored traditional skill with a variety of purposes: bedding, decoration, commemoration, education and artistic expression. Quilts, which provide excellent insulation against the cold, originally used fabric scraps, hand-pieced together. The arrival of fabric mills and the Singer sewing machine expanded the variety of patterns and the speed in which a quilt could be made. The quilting tradition continues in CNY, and February is the time to see these local works on display at Betts Branch Library.

misc_none 10:30 AM  -  12:30 PM Encore! 'Creative Photography Made Simple'     Tell a Friend

Encore! Master new skills through professionally taught workshops at NOPL Cicero. ‘Creative Photography Made Simple’ is an eight week ‘Creative Aging’ learning workshop designed for students over 50 years.

The class objective will be to learn how to take dramatically better photos by knowing the basic principles needed to master your camera. Participants will learn to understand their camera, how light and composition can improve a photo, and gain the confidence to take a great photo. Setting your camera on auto might work some of the time but for the best learning experience, it is recommended that participants use a camera that has manual mode for exposure and can be focused manually. D-SLR (digital single lens reflex) cameras are extremely popular and using a digital camera will be the basis for much of our discussions.

Encore! ‘Creative Photography Made Simple’ will be taught by award winning photographer and member of the Professional Photographers of America, Norman Schillawski. (www.imagesbynorm.com).

This program will be held on Saturday mornings from 10:30 to 12:30pm, starting February 13th and ending on April 9. ( No class on March 12th) Light refreshments will be served and is enrollment is limited to 15 participants. Workshop is free, but registration is required.

Black Voices Matter: Poetry Reading
In Collaboration with Underground Poetry Spot and Rae Angrand’s Invitational Poets
Saturday, February 13, at 2 p.m.

February is African American history month. But history is not just a collection of stories from our past; it is thousands of lives, uncountable lived experiences, and the cultural context that creates the world we live in today. History is being made, every day, by black people across the country in today’s civil rights movement: Black Lives Matter. Young people born into this cultural context have unique and important perspectives on their intersectional identities and struggles, but rarely are given voice to express it.

In times of fear and struggle, literature is one of our best tools to communicate complicated perspectives and emotions, to spread ideas, and to inspire empathy and compassion. To speak to the experience of being young and black in today’s world, and specifically in Syracuse, New York, are seven talented young poets: Kyle Tape, Simone Owens, Mariah Scott, Abigail Bogle, and Mic Tha Poet. They will be performing their work and engaging in the powerful art of spoken word poetry, connecting to a long history of black poets and revolutionaries who came before them.

misc_none 10:00 AM  -  12:00 PM Betts Book Discussion     Tell a Friend

"At the Water's Edge is a rich, beautiful novel. Elgantly written  and compulsively readable, it is at once a gripping love story, a profound examination of the effects of war on ordinary  women, and a compelling portrait of female friendship. While delving into powerful themes, Sara Gruen never loses sight of what matters: her characters. This story of one privileged young woman, coming of age in a time of impossible upheavel and terrible choices, will keep you riveted until the very last page." --Kristin Hannah

    Monday, February 22, at 6 p.m.

We do love to chant. And not only is it a pleasure, it’s actually good for your brain, your body and your being. Come prepared to chant, to relax and to talk about the spiritual sound that is chanting. Yes, come prepared to chant. With all those books, I bet the library has some great acoustics.

(Marie Summerwood has two CDs of women’s sacred music, She Walks with Snakes and Step into the River.
She has a lot to say about this topic and a lot of chants to chant.)

Registration is required. If you cannot attend, please contact us to cancel.

  • Meditations: The Journey Into Silence
    with Dolores Card
    Monday, March 28, at 6 p.m.

The mind-body connection so long recognized by those who engage in many holistic forms of achieving and sustaining health, is now being acknowledged and employed by traditional medical practices. After years of scientific study, it is clear that physical health is directly affected by our emotional well-being. This class will offer simple and practical ways to achieve a meditative state. Come and learn the benefits of slowing down the brain and relaxing the mind. It is the quickest and easiest way to bring peace into your world. A guided meditation will be presented for the class to experience; one that can be used again and again in various ways.

Dolores Card has taught metaphysical principles and doctrines through classes, seminars and workshops, as well as Reiki certification, for 25 years. She is a Reiki master, ecumenical minister and spiritual advisor.

Registration is required. If you cannot attend, please contact us to cancel.
