misc_none 9:00 AM  -  5:00 PM Are you a Smart Cookie? Prove it!     Tell a Friend

Beauchamp Branch Smart Cookies are kids who use the library! They check out books, get homework help from tutors in the library, and they talk to librarians about books they like to read. On December Holiday break, smart cookies will get to attend a special Cooking Up Literacy where they will make… cookies!
Beginning on September 1st, every day that kids 12 and under check out a children’s book at Beauchamp, they earn 1 cookie point towards the Smart Cookie Cooking Up Literacy. Kids can earn additional points by attending Beauchamp Branch library programs, getting homework help in the library, and talking to a librarian about a book they read that week. Once they have earned 30 cookie points (don’t worry, the library will keep track for you!), they will be able to register for the Smart Cookie Cooking Up Literacy!

rec_paintpalette02 9:00 AM Our Walk: A Journey Through Poetry and Illustration     Tell a Friend

Begun with a walk, carried through dreams, and borne through a year of drawing, painting, printing, sewing and binding, Our Walk is a journey of poetry and illustration written and illustrated by Marissa L. Hill, artist, writer, and educator.

In this exhibition, Hill uses her illustrated book to display the process of taking a poem from concept, through sketches, paintings, prints, and into the hand-binding of the images into limited edition artist books.

Telling the story of two people on a walk through the woods to see an ancient tree, Hill leads the reader on a path of times past marked by relics of both human and natural concepts of time and belonging.  Join us on a walk through a Central New York landscape to explore the history of the people, the land, and the natural elements that watch it all.

rec_paintpalette02 5:30 PM  -  8:00 PM Our Walk: Reading and Artist Reception     Tell a Friend

Begun with a walk, carried through dreams, and borne through a year of drawing, painting, printing, sewing and binding, Our Walk is a journey of poetry and illustration written and illustrated by Marissa L. Hill, artist, writer, and educator.

During this reading and artist talk, Hill will use her illustrated book to discuss the process of taking a poem from concept, through sketches, paintings, prints, and into the hand-binding of the images into limited edition artist books.

“On the Table” Artist Viewing Program

Please join Viewing Program artist Laura Cosgrave as she presents India ink and handmade paper drawings based on the front page of "The New York Times".  She will display her work on a table which will allow visitors to be seated when viewing her drawings, taking time to become immersed in the artwork, as one might with a book.

“To display work on a wall is one remove from an artist’s mind. But to present a drawing from a table sets the work in situ, opening a gateway into that mind.”

rec_paintpalette02 Every Possible Scenario Must Be Explored     Tell a Friend

"This particular set of paintings personifies specific internal phobias and fears from both my childhood and current adult life. They are in turn satirical and semi-abstract twisted personal narratives relating to mythical tragedies and worldly subjects of contemporary life. The paint itself is thick and visceral to exemplify the feeling of an altered reality that each narrative has presented to not only myself, but also to the viewer."

Allison Sarenski is a local artist in Syracuse, New York. She graduated with her BFA in painting and drawing from Purchase College in 2013. She is happy to share her work with the community.

lib_book3 2:30 PM Reading, Book Talk, and Signing with Local Teen Author, Ema Furuya     Tell a Friend

Local teen author, Ema Furuya will be at Petit sharing her children’s book, The Dream Eater’s Balloons. The story is about a mythical creature known as a “Dream-eater” or a “Baku” in Japanese. The Dream-eater has a dilemma due to the abundance of nightmares, so two children, Lacy and Hans, help him. When asked about the book’s moral, Ema Furuya responded, “I guess if there is a moral to my story, it is that you often need teamwork and more than one person to accomplish what you want to do.”

Furuya will be giving a reading, followed by a talk on her process of creating the book from a concept to a finished story with accompanying pictures. She will also speak about her experience publishing creative work as a young author.

This event is open to children who might enjoy hearing an author read them a picture-book story as well as to teenagers and aspiring authors of all ages curious to learn from a published author’s process. We welcome anyone interested in supporting this local teen author. You will be able to purchase signed copies of the book at the talk.
