About Jerry Kluver

Jerry has had a love for gardening since he was a small child growing up in western Iowa. He brings over 40 years of retail greenhouse and nursery experience to Hy-Vee.

Wife: Faylene, married for 43 years

Children/grandchildren: 4 sons, 4 daughter in-laws and 13 grandchildren

Loves most about his job: Solving garden problems (especially the challenging ones) and finding consumers the products they need. Making customers smile.

Words to live by: “Just get it done!” (The word can’t is not in Jerry’s vocabulary.)

Hobbies: Spending time with family and friends. Taking long drives in his 1930 Model A Ford. Relaxing in his yard by working with annuals and perennials and doing tests and trials of new introductions in horticulture.

Favorite flowers: Impatiens, Vinca, Roses and Lantana

Favorite food: Iowa pork chops

Best green thumb advice: How to get rid of Creeping Charlie and White Clover in lawns. How? Use a broadleaf weed killer mixed with Spreader Sticker. Apply to lawn using a dial sprayer 3 times, 10 days apart.

Worst gardening experience: Stolen tomatoes! After planting 9 beautiful new garden tomato plants, Jerry awoke to find they were stolen in the middle of the night. The next night, someone stole 11 more. Despite being frustrated, Jerry replanted and had a bumper crop.

Hardest plant to keep alive: China Doll, a tropical houseplant. The China Doll is easily overwatered and dies instantly upon receiving too much water. Tip: Be sure to replant your China Doll plant immediately after purchasing in a larger pot with more soil. The additional soil around the roots helps absorb extra water and prevent overwatering.

Favorite color: Why green of course!

Everyone is welcome to come and meet Conductor Jack from TV's "The Zinghoppers Show."  Get ready to rock, bop and zinghop with Nashville's #1 Kids Entertainer and EMMY Award winning children's songwriter.  He co-created "The Zinghoppers Show" which is a TV program that airs on over 100 PBS stations nationwide.  Bringing his guitar, ukulele and more, Conductor Jack will sing classic kids songs, original tunes like "In The Garden" and "Dig Into Reading", all while getting your kids to dance, participate and have fun at the library.  No registration is needed but everyone is invited to this fun evening!

End-of-life planning is often avoided or delayed because it makes us uncomfortable to think and talk about it. And so what happens in a lot of instances is that we ignore the topic altogether.

Starting a conversation about end-of-life wishes is often the most important and difficult step. While older adults and those with life-limiting illnesses are usually the focus of the conversation, it's useful for people to consider end-of-life preferences throughout their lifetimes.

Marcus Carris, director of the Carris Family Funeral Home, will present a program on what you need to know and do to get ready for this crucial time in life when you may not be able to vocalize your wishes.

The “Dig Up A Good Book!” Story Time Stage Show for the Iowa 2013 summer reading program “Dig Into Reading!” is filled with fun stories and some awesome balloon art!

This year we are going to join a small dog who is granted a wish and has to decide how to use it, a mouse who does something good for a snake who is not grateful, an old farmer who needs help with his crop, and we’ll learn how a shy mole comes through for his best friend! So many adventures to share! I can’t wait to dig into reading!  

 

Have you registered for this program?  All children who have finished third, fourth and fifth grade are welcome to a vegetable garden themed storytime.  You will get to make a plant viewer out of a CD case to take home.

Come and join us as we watch "How To Eat Fried Worms."  You thought brussels sprouts tasted bad.  Poor Billy has to eat ten worms in one day.  This movie is rated PG for mild bullying and crude humor and is 84 minutes long.  No registration is needed but a snack will be provided.  Children five and under must be accompanied by an adult.
