anim_dog1 10:30 AM  -  11:00 AM Read to Amos the Grehound Grades 3 and up Remind Me about this Event   Tell a Friend
    Contact: Lisa Fuller   5087638600   lfuller@sailsinc.org

Come read to Amos!  Ms. Holly and Amos, her greyhound. are new to Rochester.
Ms. Holly and Amos are a certified therapy dog team sponsored by Therapy Dogs International.

Amos and Ms. Holly are part of a Children Reading To Dogs program called "Tail Waggin' Tutors".  This is a wonderful and very popular program which can take place in a school or public library setting. Teachers, librarians, and parents are impressed by the response to this program—suddenly, reading is fun and exciting and everyone wants a chance to participate! Additionally, research has shown that the presence of Therapy Dogs not only improves a child’s self-esteem and self-confidence, but their reading scores as well!

• Dogs are non-judgmental and will not criticize or ridicule. Quite simply, the dog does not care if the child makes a mistake.

• The child can read aloud in a more private setting, thus eliminating anxiety associated with reading aloud in front of peers.

• There is a fair amount of status that goes along with those students who are chosen for whatever reason to read to the dogs. For a child who is lacking in confidence and/or is somewhat withdrawn, this puts them in the forefront in a very positive way.

Amos is a 7-year-old greyhound, and weighs 68 lbs. He has the sweetest, most gentle soul, and is fantastic with children of all ages. He has previously visited with a nursing home, and we would love to expand his resume by working in a library and allowing children to read to him!  He is a very good listener—although sometimes he does fall asleep!

THIS SESSION IS FOR THIRD GRADERS AND UP = NO EXCEPTIONS.

VERY LIMITED SPACES - 6 CHILDREN PER SESSION ONLY!

EACH CHILD WILL BE GIVEN ABOUT 5 MINUTES WITH AMOS.

    Location: Plumb Memorial Library
        There are 6 spaces available.

misc_none 11:00 AM  -  12:00 PM 3-D Printing Demonstration Remind Me about this Event   Tell a Friend

Ever wonder what 3-D printing is all about?  Drop by the library between 11:00 AM and 12:00 PM to see a demonstration of 3-D printing with the Ultimaker-2, presented by Ellizabeth Sherry of the Mattapoisett Free Public Library.  3-D printers can create everything from a toy to a prosthetic arm to a computer part.

2017 Summer Reading Program: Build a Better World
Hula Hooping for a Better World

This year, the one hour Pinto Bella Hoops program will add a constructive twist as we work together to build a better world through team work and repurposing house hold materials to make hula hoops.

The program will begin with a new book, written by Katie ‘Pinto’ LeBrun herself, that explains the process of making a hula hoop through the eyes of a young chicken. Pinto will then introduce the audience to the different kinds of hula hoops and how each one benefits our bodies and our minds. After a demonstration and a short performance, everyone gets a turn to try their moves on the hula hoop, and we will play some creative and team building games.

To end the program, we will work together to decorate a hula hoop with upcycled materials such as tapes, cloth, ribbons, and stickers (the decorated hula hoop is then given to the library to be used in a summer drawing or kept in the library for patrons to use year round). Programs held indoors will also feature a final performance, turning off the lights, and using a light up hula hoop.

Either lasts one hour, though Pinto Bella sticks around for another 20-30 minutes to answer questions about hooping, where to take classes, and how to get your own hoop.
