RE-SCHEDULED FROM MARCH 14, 2017

Decoding the Past returns for another season in 2017, kicking off with this exciting program on Civil War surgery.

Join our expert presenters, Lou Lewis, Harrison Hunt and Sam Simon, MD, as they unravel the history behind the instruments contained in this surgeon's case, donated to the Dutchess County Historical Society by Vassar Hospital. Learn how Civil War medical methods compare to modern practices: was battlefield medicine as grim as it seems from our perspective?  This event is free and open to the public: donations to DCHS will be accepted and will be used to support similar future programming.

Please contact DCHS to register: (845) 471-1630 or dchistorical@verizon.net.

    Contact: Adult Reference   845-485-3445 x3702   adultevents@poklib.org

The U.S. political mood toward trade has gone sour. One need look no further than the 2016 presidential contest for the popular narrative: trade means that China wins, at America’s expense. But do the numbers support that conclusion? The metrics used to gauge economic strength—Gross Domestic Product and balance of trade—have not kept up with the realities of modern manufacturing. Obtaining an accurate picture of U.S. economic stature requires a critique of those numbers. Only then can the U.S. develop appropriate policy solutions for the challenges at hand.   Facilitated by Jean-Claude Fouere, Physics Engineering INSA Lyon, Lyons, France; Optical Engineering U. of Rochester, Rochester NY USA.

Donna Seaman brings to life seven forgotten woman artists: Louise Nevelson, Gertrude Abercrombie, Lois Mailou Jones, Ree Morton, Joan Brown, Christina Ramberg, and Lenore Tawney. These women fought to be treated the same as males artists, to be judged by their work, not their gender or appearance. Seaman reveals what drove them, how they worked, and how they were perceived by others in a world where women were subjects -- not makers -- of art.

Movie:  All Quiet on the Western Front:  The film follows a group of German schoolboys, talked into enlisting at the beginning of World War 1 by their jingoistic teacher. The story is told entirely through the experiences of the young German recruits and highlights the tragedy of war through the eyes of individuals. As the boys witness death and mutilation all around them, any preconceptions about "the enemy" and the "rights and wrongs" of the conflict disappear, leaving them angry and bewildered.  (1930; 2 hr, 16 min)

What is the effect of U.S. petroleum security on foreign policy?  What is the effect of U.S. petroleum security on foreign policy? For 45 years, the country has alternated between periods of energy security and insecurity, sometimes able to wield petroleum as a useful instrument of foreign policy, sometimes not. Despite the so-called “energy revolution,” the U.S. today is by no means disentangled from foreign dependence and global trends. In order to be successful, policymakers must recognize both petroleum security circumstances and patterns in the relationship between petroleum and foreign policy. Facilitated by Matt Murray, Instructor in Government at Dutchess Community College.

Book: Norse Mythology by Neil Gaiman.  Neil Gaiman has long been inspired by ancient mythology in creating the fantastical realms of his fiction. Now he presents his fashioning of the primeval Norse myths into a novel. Gaiman stays true to the myths while vividly recreating the characters--the gods with their fiercely competitive natures, their susceptibility to being duped and to dupe others, and their tendencey to let passion ignite their actions--and making these long-ago myths breathe pungent life again. (adapted from author website)
