2017 marks the Centennial of Women’s Suffrage in New York State. The history of the women's suffrage movement in our state and nation spanned seventy years, from the 1848 meeting convened by Elizabeth Cady Stanton in Seneca Falls to the tactics wielded by Alice Paul, and includes overlooked stories and actors such as the African-American suffragists. Our book selections - which include history, biography, and fiction - provide a window into this chapter of American social progress and a springboard into ongoing discussions of women's - and by extension, our society's - past, present, and future. This discussion series will be facilitated by our Scholar Dr. Sandra Opdycke. Sponsored by the New York Council for the Humanities.

Mark Morganstern left a budding music career behind when he realized he didn't want to play weddings in a cover band. He parlayed a long-term literary interest into an MA in Creative Writing from the City University of New York, subsequently adjuncting in a college, subbing in a high school, and booking music acts in his family cafe. When off duty, he writes, submits, files rejections, and even gets published. He believes in fiction.  Mark will read from his newly published collection of short stories, Dancing with Dasein.

The 2016 NEA Big Read Kicks-Off at the Bardavon 1869 Opera House!

7 pm, Live music with Banda Vientos de Mexico
Based in the Mid-Hudson Valley, this band has a Traditional Mexican sound with upbeat rhythms and bright brass.
7:30 pm, Film Screening: The Magnificent Seven (1960)
Directed by John Sturges, this classic film stars Yul Brynner, Eli Wallach, Steve McQueen, Horst Buchholz, Robert Vaughn, James Coburn and Brad Dexter, and features an iconic movie score by Elmer Bernstein. This film figures prominently in the Big Read book selection this year; the main character is directly inspired by the film to undertake her quest to the north, and there is a running gag throughout the book about whether Yul Brynner is a Mexican movie star or not. Tickets for the mini-concert and movie will be available at the library circulation desks a few weeks prior to October 14, and at the Bardavon Box Office for $6.00 (or free with a library card).

2017 marks the Centennial of Women’s Suffrage in New York State, and in 2020 the nation will celebrate 100 years of the 19th Amendment. This program is sponsored by the New York Council for the Humanities.

This discussion series will be facilitated by our Scholar Dr. Sandra Opdycke on select Tuesdays @ Adriance from September through December in the Charwat Meeting Room, Ground Floor, 7-8:30 pm.

Politics and Pundits:  Congressman Steve Israel with Chris Matthews. We always knew Rep. Steve Israel had a funny side, but last December he “revealed his inner Jon Stewart,” according to the New York Daily News, with his novel The Global War on Morris. A Buckleyesque satire on the Bush Cheney era, it’s now in development for a comedy series for cable. Israel is joined by MSNBC host Chris Matthews to discuss the absurdities of Washington—as only insiders like these two can.

Our guest speaker is Maria Elena Ferrer, founder in 2003 of Humanamente. Humanamente started in Spain, initially to work with immigrant women from Latin America, Eastern Europe and sub-Saharan Africa.  When relocated to New York in 2011, Humanamente shifted its focus to helping the U.S. Hispanic population improve quality of life and well-being.  Marie Elena is a respected lecturer and often-quoted expert on the topic of Migratory Mourning, a grieving process that stems from losses and separation. Leaving a place, a family, a culture, a language, a familiar schedule - all of these upheavals create stress regardless of whether the migration is voluntary or forced. Get glimpse into the heart of a displaced person.

In the past few years, the American public has become more aware of the damage wrought by climate change. From droughts in the west to extreme weather in the east, a rapidly changing climate has already made its footprint in the United States. Now, it’s expected that the presidential election in 2016 will be one of the first ever to place an emphasis on these environmental changes. What can the next president do to stymie this environmental crisis? And is it too late for these efforts to be effective?  Facilitated by Steven Leibo, International History and Politics, The Sage Colleges.

Community members are encouraged to participate in this event where people will read aloud works that they have written or excerpts of favorites by others. The theme is IMMIGRATION, because it is a central motif running through our Big Read book, 'Into the Beautiful North'. We will also be sharing pieces written by the Creative Writing Group at Green Haven Correctional Facility. Please note that this is a grown-up event, as some material may not be appropriate for children.  Wine and light desserts will be served.
