Latin America's Political Pendulum.  The pendulum of Latin American politics is swinging rightward once again. Yet as the “pink tide” recedes, the forces of change have more to do with socioeconomics than ideology. Dramatic economic and political crises have coincided in countries like Brazil and Venezuela. Still, the final result for Latin America may be the emergence of centrist, pragmatic modes of governance, and with them, opportunities for the U.S. to improve relations. The new administration must look beyond the neoliberal model of the 1990s, and develop an approach to relations fit for the 21st century.  Facilitator: Martin Charwat, WACMHV.

The Future of Europe: Coping with the Crisis.   The outcome of the United Kingdom referendum on EU membership sent shockwaves across the globe. It even caught British voters by surprise. The European Union has helped secure peace in Europe for the past 70 years. Now it faces an uncertain future. Amid a refugee crisis, lingering financial recession and the constant specter of terrorism, unity seems more imperative than ever. But the Brexit vote underscores the complexities of integrating an extremely diverse continent. What will post-Brexit Europe look like, and how can U.S. foreign policy adapt?  Facilitator: Jean-Claude Fouere, WACMHV and Marist College.

Lecture now on Tuesday, November 14.  No war since the American Civil War has seared the U.S. national consciousness like Vietnam. The controversies surrounding it tore the nation apart, and its legacies continue to shape our understanding of the past and the present. The war forced Americans to ask fundamental questions about their country’s role in the world and its use of power. This talk examines the place of the Vietnam War in the nation’s history and traces its meaning and legacies. Robert. K. Brigham, Shirley Ecker Boskey Professor of History and International Relations, joined the Vassar faculty in 1994. He is a specialist on the history of U.S. foreign policy, particularly the Vietnam War and negotiations to end deadly conflict.

Conflict in the South China Sea.   The South China Sea is a locus of competing territorial claims, and China its most vocal claimant. Beijing’s interest has intensified disputes with other countries in the region in recent years, especially since China has increased its naval presence. Despite rising international pressure, including an unfavorable ruling by the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea, China staunchly defends its policies in the region. Preventing tensions from boiling over is a matter of careful diplomacy.  Facilitator: Matthew Murray, WACMHV and Dutchess Community College.

The Civil Rights Movement served as an inspiration and, at times, ally of the anti-war movement. What were the intersections between the fight for racial justice and opposition to the Vietnam War? From early statements of the Students for a Democratic Society to Martin Luther King, Jr.s 1967 "Beyond Vietnam" speech, anti-racism and opposition to the Cold War drew political and tactical inspiration from one another, each side refining its message in relation to the other. We will look at several key speeches and demonstrations from the 1960s and early 1970s to better understand these intersections.  Lee Bernstein is Professor of History at SUNY New Paltz, where he has taught since 2004.

Geoff Ward was the writer for ‘The Vietnam War’, the new film by Ken Burns and Lynn Novick. In a conversation with Paul Sparrow, Director of the FDR Presidential Library, Geoff  will talk about the making of the film and his collaboration with Ken Burns. The principal writer of the television mini-series ‘The Civil War’ (1990), Ward has collaborated with co-producer Ken Burns on most of the documentaries he has made since.  The 2011 Burns/Ward collaboration, ‘Prohibition’, brought Ward his seventh Emmy for Outstanding Writing for Nonfiction Programming. Since that project, he worked with Ken Burns on ‘The Roosevelts: An Intimate History’, a seven-part documentary miniseries which was broadcast on PBS in September 2014.

Book:  My Favorite Thing is Monsters. Book One by Emil Ferris.  Set against the tumultuous political backdrop of late ’60s Chicago, My Favorite Thing Is Monsters is the fictional graphic diary of 10-year-old Karen Reyes, filled with B-movie horror and pulp monster magazines iconography. Karen Reyes tries to solve the murder of her enigmatic upstairs neighbor, Anka Silverberg, a holocaust survivor, while the interconnected stories of those around her unfold. When Karen’s investigation takes us back to Anka’s life in Nazi Germany, the reader discovers how the personal, the political, the past, and the present converge. Full-color illustrations throughout.

We meet at Juan Murphy's Irish Pub and Mexican Grub 796 Main Street Poughkeepsie (Formerly The Dubliner).

Book:  He Sees You When You're Sleeping by Mary Higgins Clark.  "Sterling Brooks has been cooling his heels in the Celestial Waiting Room for forty-six years, waiting for admission to heaven. Finally, just days before Christmas, he's summoned before the Heavenly Council and found unworthy; throughout his life he had been hopelessly self-absorbed. To redeem himself, he is given the chance to go back to Earth and find someone to help."
