The public is welcome to attend the Friends of the Poughkeepsie Public Library District's Annual Meeting, starting at 6 pm, with light refreshments to follow.  The guest speaker Andrew Coe will take the podium at 7 pm.

Author Andrew Coe co-wrote the book 'A Square Meal: A Culinary History of the Great Depression' with his wife Jane Ziegelman. The book traces America's culinary history from the 1930s to the present.

The Great Depression certainly crushed America’s economy and destroyed lives. But its societal wreckage also included the decimation of something far more basic. The habit of a regular meal, or any meal, died for many. 'A Square Meal' details how the FDR food programs did more than relieve hunger. At the behest of Eleanor Roosevelt, the initiative incorporated nutritional requirements and spawned the advent of corporate food production – the foundation of today’s food economy and expectations of health from diet.
