Hidden Figures is the incredible untold story of Katherine G. Johnson (Taraji P. Henson), Dorothy Vaughan (Octavia Spencer) and Mary Jackson (Janelle Monáe) - brilliant African-American women working at NASA, who served as the brains behind one of the greatest operations in history: the launch of astronaut John Glenn into orbit, a stunning achievement that restored the nation's confidence, turned around the Space Race, and galvanized the world. The visionary trio crossed all gender and race lines to inspire generations to dream big.  The film is based on the book Hidden Figures: The American Dream and the Untold Story of the Black Women Mathematicians Who Helped Win the Space Race by Margot Lee Shetterly.  What better way to celebrate Black History Month than by viewing this incredible story?

Enjoy the movie with free popcorn!

anyone interested in stamp collecting? Stamps are little pieces of art, interesting glimpses into our history. Our group of stamp collectors are eagerly looking for new stamp collectors. Please feel free to stop in at any of our meetings. Follow the library calendar for our monthly dates. Usually we stick to Monday evenings. We have stamp books for sale from stamp clubs across the U.S.at each meeting. Sometimes we hold an auction with stamp items/postal history. Currently have about 19-20 club members. Filmed with meticulous attention to period and detail, The Remains of the Day is the story of Stevens (Anthony Hopkins), the "perfect" butler to a prosperous British household during the 1930s. He is so unswervingly devoted to serving his master, a well-meaning but insensitive British lord (James Fox), that he shuts himself off from all emotions and familial relationships. New housekeeper Miss Kenton (Emma Thompson) tries to warm him up and awaken his humanity. But when duty calls, Stevens won't even attend his own dying father's last moments on earth. The butler also refuses to acknowledge the fact that his master is showing signs of pro-Nazi sentiments. Disillusioned by Hitler's duplicity, the master dies an embittered man, and only then does Stevens come to realize how his own silence has helped bring about this sad situation. Years later, regretting his lost opportunities in life, he tries once more to make contact with Miss Kenton, the only person who'd ever cared enough to seek out the human being inside the butler's cold veneer.
The movie is based on the book of the same name by Kazuo Ishiguro, who has just been awarded (2017) the Nobel Prize in Literature. In honor of Ishiguro's achievement and in observance of Academy Awards Month, come enjoy this Best Picture winner (1994).

Enjoy the movie with free popcorn!

Florence Foster Jenkins was the most famous, though untalented, soprano in twentieth century America. Her extraordinary story is now a film directed by Stephen Frears starring Meryl Streep as the indomitable Florence Foster Jenkins and Hugh Grant as her husband/manager, St. Clair Bayfield. Born in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania in 1868, Florence adored music, but her wealthy father refused to allow her to study in Europe. In 1909, she inherited a considerable sum of money when her father died. It was then that she began to take singing lessons, vowed to become a great soprano and met St Clair Bayfield. At seventy six, after a lifetime supporting classical music societies and giving self-financed recitals, she gave a solo concert at Carnegie Hall that drew Cole Porter, Gypsy Rose Lee and other luminaries to the sold-out hall. It was a night to remember. Florence felt she had triumphed, but the crowd roared with laughter. After a lifetime of singing to entertain others, she didn’t know the one thing that everyone else did and that St. Clair Bayfield kept from her: she had a terrible voice and couldn’t sing a note. The movie is based on Darryl W. Bullock’s biography, Florence Foster Jenkins: The Life of the World's Worst Opera Singer. (We wonder:  could this story be the world’s greatest April Fools joke??)

Enjoy the movie with free popcorn!

Come celebrate National Pet Month with us by watching A Dog’s Purpose, the soulful and surprising story of one devoted dog (voiced by Josh Gad) who finds the meaning of his own existence through the lives of the humans he teaches to laugh and love. The family film told from the dog’s perspective also stars Britt Robertson, KJ Apa, John Ortiz, Peggy Lipton, Juliet Rylance, Luke Kirby, Pooch Hall and Dennis Quaid. Heartwarming, insightful, and often laugh-out-loud funny, A Dog's Purpose is not only the emotional and hilarious story of a dog's many lives, but also a dog's-eye commentary on human relationships and the unbreakable bonds between man and man's best friend. This moving and beautifully crafted story teaches us that love never dies, that our true friends are always with us, and that every creature on earth is born with a purpose. The movie is based on Bruce Cameron's best-selling novel, A Dog’s Purpose: A Novel For Humans.

Enjoy the movie with free popcorn!

An all-star cast shines in this inspiring film based on the best-selling memoir of the same name by Jeannette Walls.  Jeannette (Brie Larson) had a poor but wildly adventurous childhood, raised by her free-spirited father (Woody Harrelson) and her mother (Naomi Watts), an eccentric artist. But when her father's behavior becomes increasingly erratic, Jeannette must find the courage to live on her own terms in this uplifting story of unconditional love. This amazing true story has made the book a perennial title on school summer reading lists - so we are showing it this month in honor of the coming of summer!

Enjoy the movie with free popcorn!
