Cuba Sí!
September 1 - 30

This September, the Portsmouth Public Library will host an exhibit of art from, and inspired by, Cuba. This small island nation, 90 miles from our shore, has fascinated Americans for many years. As travel to Cuba has become easier, our curiosity continues, and many of us have expressed an interest in learning more about this vibrant socialist country.

Cuba Sí is the 6th art show that artist Diane Stradling has organized for the library since 2008. The show will highlight paintings, prints and iconic movie posters produced in Cuba, as well as photographs of Cuba by local Seacoast photographers. All are invited to attend a reception on Thursday, September 8. In addition, on Wednesday, September 14 local residents, who have recently returned from Cuba, will share their experiences and impressions of the nation. Both events will be held from 6:30 – 8:30 PM.

During these events, in addition to art work, we will show short films. On September 8, hear about the Cuba Literacy Campaign of 1961, which continues to influence and inspire third world countries who are struggling to educate their populations today. On September 14, learn about recent changes set in place by President Obama to make travel to Cuba easier for Americans.

Beyond Plumbing

Steam Punk Sculpture by Joe Kennedy

October 4 - 31

Portsmouth Public Library

Joe Kennedy’s art evolved from his plumbing trade. Visit the library from October 4 – 31 for his steam punk sculpture show, “Beyond Plumbing,” in which the tradesman-turned-artist merges the two in whimsical and captivating ways.

Says Kennedy, “The old world is orderly, familiar and predictable.  The new world is exciting, unknown and unexplored.  The trade offers technical experience and most of the material - left-over parts, scrap and hundreds of related items that become amusing, engaging and thoughtful pieces of sculpture.

“I find much joy seeing relics of a useful past, whose time has ended, be reborn again to serve us in a different but fulfilling way.  While you study each piece with its shine and gleam and quirkiness you may find yourself, like me, transcending to another place and time, surprised and delighted. I want to make you smile.”

You may contact the artist at joekennedy@tds.net / 207 277 3733. Photography by Nellie Kennedy.

Death Café

Saturday October 8

10 AM – 12:30 PM

Death: It’s no conversation killer. Drink coffee, eat cake, and discuss your inevitable demise.

Hospice Help Foundation is pleased to partner with the Portsmouth Public Library to host its third Death Café, where community members meet in a supportive environment to discuss thoughts, feelings, and experiences with death—without the awkwardness often associated with this topic. Discussing death helps us make the most of our (finite) lives.

Free and open to the public, though space is limited. RSVP before May 27th to Hospice Help Foundation, at 603-766-0444 or janet@hhelpfoundation.org.

Hospice Help Foundation, an independent 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, aims to provide financial assistance to hospice patients and their families with dire financial need to improve their quality of life and ease the burdens accompanying a terminal diagnosis. Our support transcends the usual scope of hospice care by providing assistance for services not covered by medicare, medicaid, or private insurance, and is available to patients regardless of which hospice provides their care. Visit them online at hhelpfoundation.org, or on facebook as hospicehelpfoundation.

Captain America – Civil War
Rated PG-13. 147 minutes. Starring The Avengers!
After another incident involving the Avengers results in collateral damage, political pressure mounts to install a system of accountability, headed by a governing body to oversee and direct the team. The new status quo fractures the Avengers, resulting in two camps, one led by Steve Rogers and his desire for the Avengers to remain free to defend humanity without government interference, and the other following Tony Stark's surprising decision to support government oversight and accountability. – summary taken from Midwest Tape

October 18: Lest Innocent Blood be Shed: The Story of the Village of Le Chambon, and how Goodness Happened There by Philip Paul Hallie (1994)

During the most terrible years of World War II, when inhumanity and political insanity held most of the world in their grip and the Nazi domination of Europe seemed irrevocable and unchallenged, a miraculous event took place in a small Protestant town in southern France called Le Chambon. There, quietly, peacefully, and in full view of the Vichy government and a nearby division of the Nazi SS, Le Chambon's villagers and their clergy organized to save thousands of Jewish children and adults from certain death.

October 26: Among Others by Jo Walton (2011)

World Fantasy Award–winner Walton (Tooth and Claw) turns the magical boarding school story inside out in this compelling coming-of-age tale. Welsh teen Morwenna was badly hurt, and her twin sister killed, when the two foiled their abusive mother's spell work. Seeking refuge with a father she barely knows in England, Mori is shunted off to a grim boarding school. Mori works a spell to find kindred souls and soon meets a welcoming group of science fiction readers, but she can feel her mother looking for her, and this time Mori won't be able to escape.

Wednesday November 9 | ADI RULE
Young Adult Author
10:00 AM Presentation
11:30 AM Book Signing

This series is cohosted by Kid Lit Universe. Learn from professionals as you navigate the jungle of book publishing in today’s market. It doesn’t matter where you are in your career, whether you’re in the thinking stage or already have been published, come share and learn! The free sessions for adults will begin with a presentation in the Levenson Room, followed by a question and answer period. Book signings, open to all ages, will be held in the lobby of the library.

Adi Rule writes in a studio apartment filled with books, cats, pictures of cats, musical instruments, video games, records, and a macaw who refuses to say, "Shiver me timbers!" despite the fact that it would be the best thing ever. She’s also a vocalist with the Boston Symphony Orchestra/Boston Pops. Rule earned my MFA in writing from the Vermont College of Fine Arts, and also has a BA in voice from the University of New Hampshire. She is the author of the YA novels Strange Sweet Song and The Hidden Twin. Visit her on the web at www.adirule.com.

November 14: We Are Called to Rise by Laura McBride (2014)

In her debut novel, McBride introduces us chapter by chapter to a disparate group of Las Vegans. Among them are Avis, whose husband Jim has just left her for another woman, and their son, Nate, a troubled veteran of the Iraq War who has returned to join a craven Vegas police department and who has begun to abuse his young wife. We also meet Bashkim, an Albanian immigrant boy whose unassimilated parents barely survive selling ice cream from a truck.…

November 15: The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks by Rebecca Skloot (2010)

Science journalist Skloot makes a remarkable debut with this multilayered story about “faith, science, journalism, and grace.” It is also a tale of medical wonders and medical arrogance, racism, poverty and the bond that grows, sometimes painfully, between two very different women—Skloot and Deborah Lacks—sharing an obsession to learn about Deborah’s mother, Henrietta, and her magical, immortal cells.

December 12: Our Souls at Night by Kent Haruf (2015)

Special guest-led by former librarian Sherry Evans!

Within the first three pages of this gripping and tender novel, Addie Moore, a 70-year-old widow, invites her neighbor, Louis Waters, to sleep over….  Although Louis is taken off guard, the urgency of Addie’s loneliness does not come across as desperate, and her logic will soon persuade him…. What follows is a sweet love story, a deep friendship, and a delightful revival of a life neither of them was expecting, all against the backdrop of a gossiping (and at times disapproving) small town.

Stephen WaltFor the first time in recent memory, large numbers of Americans are openly questioning their country’s strategy when it comes to international affairs. An April 2016 Pew poll found that 57 percent of Americans agree that the United States should “deal with its own problems and let others deal with theirs the best they can.” Tonight, Stephen M. Walt, the Robert and Renée Belfer Professor of International Affairs at the Harvard Kennedy School of Government will share his ideas on what the United States' strategy should be globally.

Professor Walt previously taught at Princeton and at the University of Chicago, where he was Master of the Social Sciences Collegiate Division and Deputy Dean of Social Sciences.  He is a contributing editor at Foreign Policy magazine, co-chair of the editorial board of International Security, and co-editor of the Cornell Studies in Security Affairs book series. He was elected a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in May 2005 and received the International Studies Association’s Distinguished Senior Scholar award in 2014.  His books include The Origins of Alliances, which received the 1988 Edgar S. Furniss National Security Book Award, and Taming American Power: The Global Response to U.S. Primacy, which was a finalist for the Lionel Gelber International Affairs Book Award and the Arthur Ross Book Prize.  His most recent book, The Israel Lobby and U.S. Foreign Policy (co-authored with John J. Mearsheimer) was a New York Times best-seller and has been translated into more than twenty foreign languages.  His weekly FP column can be read at http://www.foreignpolicy.com/voices/walt.
