How-To Festival

Saturday, August 2, 2014
10 AM – 3 PM, rain or shine

Learn 25+ things in 5 hours – for FREE!

Ever wondered how to do the dance from Michael Jackson’s Thriller? Or kick a field goal? Or make kombucha? Or play hundreds of songs with only three guitar chords? Or open a bee hive? Or build your own rotocopter, self-watering garden container, or LED reading light? Or play chess? Or swing dance?

We could go on! There’s only one place to learn all these things and more: Portsmouth Public Library’s very first How-To Festival.

At this celebration of Seacoast skills and talents, there’s something for everyone – bring the whole family and all your friends! All you need is a picnic lunch. The rest is on us. So mark your calendars for August 2nd, and get ready to learn!

Note: Children under 10 must be accompanied by an adult at all times in the library.

 June 26 -  Philomena.  Rated PG-13. Runs 98 minutes

“In 1952, a young Philomena was sent to the convent of Roscrea in Ireland after giving birth to her first child. When her son became a toddler, the nuns sent him to America for adoption. Philomena then spent the next fifty years seeking for him in vain.”  (midwesttapes.com)

 July 10 -  Monuments Men.  PG-13. 118 minutes

“An unlikely World War II platoon has been tasked by FDR with going into Germany to rescue artistic masterpieces from Nazi thieves and returning them to their rightful owners. With the art trapped behind enemy lines, and with the German army under orders to destroy everything as the Reich fell, how could they possibly succeed? But as the Monuments Men, as they were called, found themselves in a race against time, they would risk their lives to protect mankind's greatest achievements.”  (midwesttapes.com)

July 24 -  Grand Budapest Hotel.  Rated R. 100 minutes.

“The adventures of Gustave H, a legendary concierge at a famous European hotel, and Zero Moustafa, the lobby boy who becomes his most trusted friend. The story involves the theft and recovery of a priceless Renaissance painting and the battle for an enormous family fortune.”  (midwesttapes.com)

 August 21 -  Still Mine.  Rated PG-13. 103 minutes.

“An exquisitely mounted and deeply affecting story about one man's determination to create a home for his ailing wife as they enter their twilight years. Based on actual events that prove love is the ultimate triumph.”  (midwesttapes.com)

Swinging Our Way to Victory: American Popular Music of the World War II Era

Seventy years ago, mass broadcast music was beginning to take over the country. Nearly every family had a radio in the home. Meanwhile, a global war was being waged that would change the course of history. We looked to music then, as now, for relief, morale, and connection.

Join us in September as presenter Kevin Comtois showcases American popular music from the World War II Era.  Beginning with the Tin Pan Alley, Minstrel and Jazz music so popular in the 1920s and 30s, he'll look at how the subject matter, style and purpose of American music changed with the eruption of war in Europe and Asia and the impact here at home. Through the lens of music, we can see the issues of race, gender, economics and religion that were just beginning to explode into the American consciousness.

Kevin Comtois is an educator, musician, and author of Troubadours & Troublemakers: The Evolution of American Protest Music. Find out more at kevincomtois.com.

See What’s Whispered is a new documentary about artist David C. Baker of Jackson, New Hampshire. For over fifty years, David enriched Mount Washington Valley’s cultural and community life. His enduring influence extended well beyond the Valley, to all who encountered him. Until his death from cancer in 1999, David Baker was a dear friend and mentor to many, including filmmaker Judy C. Faust, who involved Baker’s community in the making of this film.
