Miyazaki / Studio Ghibli Art Show
September – October 2017

Do you love Ponyo? Is Spirited Away one of your family’s favorite films? Is your room decorated with drawings of My Neighbor Totoro? Then you may be a fan of the animator Hayao Miyazaki, founder of Studio Ghibli, and his many celebrated films!

From early works like Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind and Castle in the Sky to later hits like How’s Moving Castle and Arrietty, Studio Ghibli has produced some of the most beloved works for children and adults alike.

The Portsmouth Public Library will host a Miyazaki Day on Saturday, October 14. We’ll be celebrating with activities, refreshments, crafts, demonstrations, and a costume contest, trivia contest, and more! But before the big day, we’d like to see how the world of Miyazaki inspires you.

Submit your Miyazaki/Studio Ghibli art to the library and we’ll display it here until October 14. This show is open to all ages, all skill levels, and all forms of media. This show will not be judged – instead, participants will enter a prize drawing from one of our sponsors on Miyazaki Day!

Just bring your art to the Youth Services desk. Please make sure you have attached your name and contact information to your piece. The deadline for submissions is October 13. Art will be available to pick up from October 16 – 31.

How actively conscious are you in your day-to-day life? What really is consciousness and how creative can we be in expanding our understanding of what consciousness means? How can creative forms of consciousness be used to help us heal, grow and even thrive?

If questions like these interest you, then the library’s Creative Conscious Gathering is for you. Come meet practitioners in different fields of creative consciousness healing arts including shamanism, mediumship, reiki, network chiropractic and spiritual consciousness.

Attend presentations by each practitioner, ask them about their fields, and help us decide whether to hold additional gatherings where we would dive deeper into any these topics. Be a part of a nonjudgmental gathering of hearts, souls and minds as we explore consciousness and consider ways in which we might live more fully.

Are you fascinated by international affairs and the world of foreign policy? If so, please join Library Director Steve Butzel and a group of your peers in the Hilton Garden Inn Room each Monday this summer from 3:30-4:30pm to discuss two topics that are voted on in advance by the group.

If you plan on attending and would like to vote on the week's possible topics, send our Director an email at skbutzel@cityofportsmouth, and he will send you a link to the webpage where you can vote. The list of topics is posted each Wednesday afternoon and voting concludes that Friday afternoon. At that point, the Director will send out an email to the group letting them know the two selected topics, and a list of links to suggested articles.

Where do we get our possible topics and a set of suggested articles from each week? From the World Affairs Council of America's Weekly World News Update webpage.

Wednesday September 27 - Hard-Boiled Wonderland and the End of the World by Haruki Murakami

A stunning combination of the contemporary and brash with elegiac allegory, all topped off by a strong measure of cyberpunk. The "hard-boiled" hero, 35 and divorced, is a man of possessions--a collection of imported whiskeys; interests--old American movies and cooking; but no emotions. Which, coupled with his brilliant work on computers, makes him the ideal candidate for a mysterious aging scientist holed up under the sewers of Tokyo.

Monday October 2 - Beasts of No Nation by Uzodinma Iweala

This astonishing debut by a gifted 23-year-old American of Nigerian ancestry tracks an African child soldier’s descent into hell. Resilient but terrified, Little Agu is a wide-eyed, preteen boy thrown among the demented and the depraved. At the start, in an unspecified West African country, he’s being dragged out of a shack in the bush and beaten by another child. There are trucks, and soldiers in rags. They offer Agu food and water and the chance to be a soldier. Agu accepts….

Are you fascinated by international affairs and the world of foreign policy? If so, please join Library Director Steve Butzel and a group of your peers in the Hilton Garden Inn Room on Mondays to discuss two topics that are voted on in advance by the group.

Estate Planning Seminar
Wednesday October 4 | 7 PM

Most nursing homes cost $100,000 a year. To learn how to plan for your care without devastating your finances, attend a FREE seminar at the Portsmouth Public Library with Attorney Edward Beasley, former chairman of the American Bar Association’s Elder Law Committee. Attorney Beasley will help you:

  • Create a trust to shelter your assets from nursing home spend-down
  • Plan for end-of-life decisions
  • See how putting assets into your children’s names can be catastrophic
  • Learn about possible defects in your existing revocable trust and make sure it is up to date.

Receive a FREE copy of Beasley & Ferber’s new book, Estate Planning for the Informed Consumer. This popular seminar is free and open to all, but space fills fast. Please call Beasley & Ferber at 1-800-370-5010 to register.

Beasley & Ferber, The Elder and Disability Law Firm, has offices in Concord, Bedford, Nashua, Exeter (NH) and North Andover (MA). beasleyferber.com

Granny D: The Power of One
A One-Woman Play by Dixie Tymitz
Tuesday October 10 | 6:30 PM

On December 31st, 1998, 88-year old Doris Haddock, known affectionately as “Granny D.”, set out to walk across America from a Santa Monica beach to Washington, D.C., our nation’s capital. She undertook this feat in order to draw attention to the need for national campaign finance reform, because she believed that money in politics had betrayed our representative democracy.

Granny D. trekked through over 1,000 miles of desert, climbed the Appalachian Range in blizzard conditions and even skied 100 miles after a historic snowfall made roadside walking impossible. As much as any soldier on the battlefield, she was willing to give her life for her country’s highest ideals. Visit the library on Tuesday October 10 to see actress Dixie Tymitz portray the character of Granny D. and her incredible journey in an informative re-enactment. Free and open to all.

Dixie Tymitz is a professional actress, singer and storyteller who, in another life was also a Humanities and Theatre teacher.

Ask a Trans Person Anything

Wednesday October 11 | 7 – 8:30 PM

PPL is proud to welcome panelists Dr. Joelle Ryan, AliciaAlec, Gerri Cannon, and Michael Phoenix on Wednesday October 11 at 7 PM. No topic is off limits. The Seacoast community will have an opportunity to engage in a respectful, moderated conversation with their transgender neighbors. Panelists will speak from personal experience and answer questions about identity, fear, discrimination, transphobia, advocacy and health. Open to all!

Joelle Ruby Ryan (preferred pronouns: They/Them/Their) earned their Ph.D. in American Culture Studies at Bowling Green State University in 2009. They are currently a Senior Lecturer in Women’s Studies at the University of New Hampshire where they teach about a diverse spectrum of different social topics. They have been an activist on behalf of transgender rights and other social justice issues for 25 years and have spoken in classes, on campuses, community groups and social service agencies.

AliciaAlec (They/Them/Their), known also as AA and Double A, is a nonbinary young-adult living in the Lakes Region of NH.  They are a volunteer Steering Committee member for Transgender New Hampshire.

Gerri Cannon (She/Her/Hers) has been sharing her life experiences for Speak Out Boston, PFLAG NH, Freedom NH, the NH Conference of UCC Churches and with the NH Legislature for the past 18 years. She worked in the Computer industry for 31 years in a variety of Senior Technical and Marketing roles. She ran her own Carpentry Business and she has driven Tractor Trailers cross country. Gerri lives in Somersworth, NH and has recently announced her intentions to run for State Representative in 2018.

Michael Phoenix (He/Him/His) is a NH-based musician, arranger, performer and teacher who came out as transgender in 2014 and shared his first year of transition experience in a blog titled "U-Turn: A UU Transman Ponders Sex, Spirituality, and the Power of Stories". Mike is the founder and director of NH's Trans/Ally chorus, TransPosition Vocal Ensemble.

Ask a Trans Person Anything will be moderated by Tracey Tucker (She/Her/Hers), Executive Director of New Heights, Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselor and owner/therapist of Tradeport Counseling and Mediation Associates.

Where do we get our possible topics and a set of suggested articles from each week? From the World Affairs Council of America's Weekly World News Update webpage.

Tuesday October 17 - Salt: A World History by Mark Kurlansky

A lively social history that does for salt what Kurlansky previously did for Cod (1997)…. Without salt, Kurlansky states at the outset, there would be no life, let alone a nifty preservative for everything from herring to mummies. Salt keeps the muscles pumping, the blood flowing, the brain firing. Its importance has trailed endless strife.

Wednesday October 25 - The Ballad of Black Tom by Victor LaValle & The Horror at Red Hook by H.P. Lovecraft

LaValle cleverly retcons H.P. Lovecraft’s infamous story “The Horror at Red Hook,” retelling it with a new protagonist (the titular Charles Thomas Tester, a splendidly Lovecraftian name) and a literary veneer that recalls Chester Himes. Tester, a con artist in 1924 Harlem with a minor awareness of the occult, occasionally masquerades as a street musician, playing the guitar (poorly) while pulling his hustles. When he’s approached by the eccentric Robert Suydam to play at a party, he knows something’s awry, but the money’s too good to pass up.

Sundays, 3 PM

This fall, the Portsmouth Public Library and PMAC (Portsmouth Music and Arts Center) in association with the Boston Classical Guitar Society, will continue their series of live guitar performances called First Sunday. Drawing from a rich selection of guitar talent from both New Hampshire and the greater Boston area, the series of recitals will highlight the versatility and range of the guitar from classical to jazz to acoustic.

Book Publishing for Genealogists with Linda L. Roghaar, Publisher

Sunday November 19 | 2 - 4 PM | Hilton Garden Inn Room

Ever wonder about publishing your family genealogy research? How to turn your work into something useful for future generations? Have you gathered large amounts of documentation? Have you gathered the right stuff? What else do you need to think about before publishing? Using today’s tools and technologies, this presentation will examine the procedures to turn your family history into a published book. Linda Roghaar from GENEALOGY HOUSE Publishers in Amherst MA will present a talk similar to the one delivered at the 2017 New England Regional Genealogical Conference.

The Portsmouth Public Library is pleased to announce its Fall 2017 Genealogy Workshop offerings! Presented by the library’s Special Collections staff and members of the Ranger Chapter of Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR), these events are free, open to the public, and appropriate for all levels of interest and experience. We hope you will join us on the third Sunday each Fall month.

Tuesday November 21 - Outliers: The Story of Success by Malcolm Gladwell

There is a logic behind why some people become successful, and it has more to do with legacy and opportunity than high IQ. In his latest book, New Yorker contributor Gladwell casts his inquisitive eye on those who have risen meteorically to the top of their fields, analyzing developmental patterns and searching for a common thread. The author asserts that there is no such thing as a self-made man, that “the true origins of high achievement” lie instead in the circumstances and influences of one’s upbringing, combined with excellent timing.

Wednesday November 29 - A Wrinkle in Time by Madeleine L’Engle

An allegorical fantasy in which a group of young people are guided through the universe by Mrs. Who, Mrs. Which and Mrs. What -- women who possess supernatural powers. They traverse fictitious regions, meet and face evil and demonstrate courage at the right moment. Religious allusions are secondary to the philosophical struggle designed to yield the meaning of life and one's place on earth. Young Meg's willingness to face IT in the form of a black beast in order to save a dear friend is one sign of her growing awareness.

Are you fascinated by international affairs and the world of foreign policy? If so, please join Library Director Steve Butzel and a group of your peers in the Hilton Garden Inn Room on Mondays to discuss two topics that are voted on in advance by the group.

For more information, contact our director, skbutzel@cityofportsmouth.com

Tuesday December 19 - To the End of June: The Intimate Life of American Foster Care by Cris Beam

Journalist Beam examines what is needed to improve the way we care for troubled families and children. In 2001, as a high school teacher, the author was able to provide a home for her 17-year-old transgender student. Prompted by this experience, she went on to spend five years exploring the contradictions within the child welfare system, seeking to find out why the 500,000 kids in American foster care were “twice as likely to develop Posttraumatic Stress Disorder" as combat veterans.
