Librarians from the Portsmouth Public Library bring books (regular and large print), books on CD and sometimes films from the library collection to share.  All of the items we bring from the library may be checked out.

The librarians 'book talk' each book by briefly highlighting basic plot lines, major characters and geographic locations.  Each talk will have a different theme or discuss a different genre.  Selections from each book are read aloud.  We would love to hear what your favorite authors are and we invite your suggestions for future book talks. Please join us for an informal conversation about books!

    Contact: Laura Horwood-Benton   766 1711   lkhorwood-benton@cityofportsmouth.com

Join us for a visit from the 14th Dhardo Rinpoche, a Tibetan Buddhist monk and tulku. Learn about the ITBCI (Indo-Tibetan Buddhist Cultural Institute), a school and orphanage founded by his predecessor, the 13th Dhardo Rinpoche. Providing a basic education to poor Tibetan refugees and preserving the Tibetan language, culture and religion, the ITBCI is located in the tiny town of Kalimpong, in northern India near the Himalayas. The ITBCI was funded in part by the Dalai Lama and the Triratna Buddhist Order. Dhardo Rinpoche dearly loved his pupils and gave them the message of “Cherish the Doctrine, Live United, and Radiate Love.”  The school is the oldest Tibetan refugee school still running, with about 300 students of diverse backgrounds.

The 14th Dhardo Rinpoche will also be open to questions about the school, Tibetan culture and his own experience and studies.

The 14th Dhardo Rinpoche was born Tenzin Legshad Wangdi in 1991, in Kalimpong, India, to a Bhutanese father and a Tibetan mother. The previous Dhardo Rinpoche had died in 1990 and this present Dhardo Rinpoche was recognized at age 3 as the next holder of the lineage, or the incarnation of the 13th Dhardo Rinpoche. In 1995, he received the final blessings of the Dalai Lama and at the age of 10 he went to Dreping Loseling Monastery in southern India, where he is still studying. On this second visit to the United States, he will be dedicating a stupa (a structure which contains the ashes and relics of the late Dhardo Rinpoche) recently built at Aryaloka Buddhist Center in Newmarket, NH.

This talk is held in conjunction with the Portsmouth Buddhist Center. Find them online at thebuddhistcenter.com/portsmouth.

The Portsmouth Public Library is proud to present a rockin' music series for Spring 2015, and all concerts are free of charge. Whether you like the blues, jazz, Celtic, Irish, reggae, folk or anything other kind of music, there’s something for you at PPL! All concerts will take place in the Levenson Room, but come early to make sure you get a seat!

Poor Howard's 12-string guitar has the solid, propulsive groove of a steady-moving freight train; and he has the uncanny way of singing classic blues tunes as if their hard-luck stories were happening today. In his care, old songs never seem old, but timeless, personal, pulsing with knowable human emotions. His own songs nestle beside them as if they grew up together.

Somehow, he delivers it all - ancient blues, modern ballad, and wild-eyed pun - in a way that makes you think you’re just sitting around his kitchen table, passing a jug and whiling away an easy Sunday afternoon.

Don't forget to join us for the other events in this series:

Out of Order: Stories from the History of the Supreme Court by Sandra Day O'Connor

Tuesday, March 17 @ 7 PM

"The first female Supreme Court justice attempts to shed light on some of its transformations, offering 'snapshots of the people and events that reflect the Court’s evolution and journey.' Since its inception in 1790, the Court has had its share of colorful characters, landmark cases, and an early history that belies its contemporary status as a well-respected institution. O’Connor tells tales of memorable justices and admits to how overwhelming her first day on the job was." - Publishers Weekly

~~A local woman, Margaret Carol, will share her story of searching for descendants of a tribe of Western Australian Aborigines at a photo lecture.

Ms. Carol will present a lecture on her visit to the site of her great-grandfather’s shipwreck in 1865 on the North West Cape of Australia. While being one of two survivors of the shipwreck, he remained for many months living with two Aboriginal tribes who saved his life.

In 2002, Ms. Carol went in search of descendants of these tribes to express her gratitude for their care of her ancestor. The presentation includes photos from her journey and details of this multi-generational cross-culture story.

This presentation is free and open to the public. Thank you.

Monthly meeting of the Portsmouth Public Library Fiction Book Club. All welcome! Whenever possible copies of each title are borrowed from New Hampshire libraries in advance. Books are available for check out with your PPL card.

Monday, January 12 | The Long Walk Home by Will North

“In this lyrical first novel about love and loss by a ghostwriter for Bill Clinton and Al Gore, Alec, a former speech writer for Jimmy Carter, walks 'like a pall bearer' from Heathrow Airport to North Wales to scatter the ashes of his late wife.” – Publishers Weekly

Monday, February 9 | The Girl Who Fell From The Sky by Heidi Durrow

“Durrow's debut draws from her own upbringing as the brown-skinned, blue-eyed daughter of a Danish woman and a black G.I. to create Rachel Morse, a young girl with an identical heritage growing up in the early 1980s.” – Publishers Weekly

Monday, March 9 | The Year We Left Home by Jean Thompson

Bookended by two wars—Vietnam and Iraq—Thompson's third novel sketches the travails of an Iowa family over three decades. Matriarch Audrey neatly sums up the episodic novel's grand theme: 'she'd been born into one world, hopeful and normal, and now she lived in another, full of sadness and failure.' ” – Publishers Weekly

Join us on April 15 for a special Reggae on Tax Day with Jah Spirit! Since 1984, Jah Spirit’s music has sent a message of peace and freedom while celebrating social consciousness and universality among all peoples.

Under the dynamic leadership of writer, composer, singer Ras Michael I, the group blends an African-Reggae beat with elements of calypso jazz, blues and rock. Ras Michael, a native of Trinidad, captivates his audiences with spellbinding lyrics and a stage presence that has been described as charismatic, highly energetic and spirited. Interaction between the audience and the musicians is a recognized trademark of Jah Spirit.

Don't forget to join us for the other events in this series:

The Portsmouth Public Library is proud to present a rockin' music series for Spring 2015, and all concerts are free of charge. Whether you like the blues, jazz, Celtic, Irish, reggae, folk or anything other kind of music, there’s something for you at PPL! All concerts will take place in the Levenson Room, but come early to make sure you get a seat!

Jazz guitarist Peter Bernstein has been a part of the jazz scene in New York and abroad since 1989. During that time he has participated in over 80 recordings and numerous festival, concert and club performances with musicians from all generations. As a leader, Peter has released nine albums and a DVD, Live at Smoke.

Current projects include his recent album, Monk, recorded for the newly reactivated Xanadu label. Together with Doug Weiss and Bill Stewart, he put their own spin on the rich legacy of Thelonious Monk.

Further titles TBA. Facilitated by PPL Staff.

Two Old Friends, Jim Prendergast and Emery Hutchins, are musicians who play and sing a unique combination of CeItic and American country music, and in their performances seek to show the connection between the two genres. Emery is a well known performer of a variety of different styles of acoustic music; ranging from traditional Irish tunes to vintage American country music songs. Jim worked for thirty years in the recording studios and orchestra pits of Nashville TN. Jim now resides in NH and is an active participant in New England’s thriving Celtic/Folk music scene.

Hutch and Jim will be singing and playing the banjo, guitar, mandolin, concertina, bodran and the octave mandolin.

Further titles TBA. Facilitated by PPL Staff.
