PhotoVoice:

Photographs and Essays from Brain Injury Survivors

Portsmouth Public Library  June 29 – July 30

Reception: Wednesday July 19, 3 – 5 PM

For brain injury survivors, sharing their experience is one of the best ways for them to feel positive about their recovery. Educating the greater community about the impact builds a sense of purpose in their lives. Often known as the silent epidemic, brain injury effects can be invisible to many.

PhotoVoice, an exhibit by Krempels Center, is a visual documentation of the lives of survivors, and their voices, in text, to go along with it. As you look at the photographs and read the text, you will see that a collective voice emerges from the exhibit, one that describes not only sadness and frustration, but also strength, joy, friendship & community.

Krempels Center provides an innovative community program for brain injury survivors. Services focus on improving the quality of life by building a sense of well-being and belonging, as well as greater community re-integration. Krempels Center provides opportunity for cognitive development, community connection, emotional support, physical activity, and vocational and/or leisure pursuit…in summary, helping people to build new lives.

Camp NaNoWriMo Write-Ins
Mondays in July
10 AM - 12 PM

Every year, NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month) takes place in November. In 30 days, participants attempt to write 50,000 words. We love participating in this event, offering inspiration, motivation, and a quiet place to write.

So what's Camp NaNoWriMo? It's a more flexible version, where you pick your own writing goal for the month of July, tracking your progress and finding support online. It's free through campnanowrimo.org.

Each Monday this month, visit PPL between 10 AM and 12 PM to write with other campers!

Are you fascinated by international affairs and the world of foreign policy? If so, please join Library Director Steve Butzel and a group of your peers in the Hilton Garden Inn Room each Monday this summer from 3:30-4:30pm to discuss two topics that are voted on in advance by the group.

If you plan on attending and would like to vote on the week's possible topics, send our Director an email at skbutzel@cityofportsmouth, and he will send you a link to the webpage where you can vote. The list of topics is posted each Wednesday afternoon and voting concludes that Friday afternoon. At that point, the Director will send out an email to the group letting them know the two selected topics, and a list of links to suggested articles.

Where do we get our possible topics and a set of suggested articles from each week? From the World Affairs Council of America's Weekly World News Update webpage.

How-To Festival
Saturday August 5 | 11 AM – 3 PM
Outdoors beside the Portsmouth Public Library

All ages. FREE. Open to all!

Ever wondered how to walk on stilts? Or how to write a poem? Or how to tie knots? Or how to solder? Or how to view a solar eclipse? Or how to sharpen knives? Or how to do a headstand? Or how to tie dye? Or how to design and grow a garden? Or how to adopt a pet?

We could go on! There’s only one place to learn all these things and more: Portsmouth Public Library’s third How-To Festival, on Saturday, August 5 from 11 AM to 3 PM. It’s FREE and open to all! This year, the festival will take place outdoors, in the field beside the library. Rain location: Connie Bean Center.

Supporting the local community is a big part of the library’s mission. The How-To Festival is a celebration of all the skills and talents the Seacoast area has to offer – and a place for community members to connect and share their knowledge and passion with each other! The Festival will also feature live music from local musicians, and the chance to buy lunch or snacks from Vida Cantina and Kona Ice!

View on our website or on Facebook for more information!

Monday August 14 - The Hunchback of Neiman Marcus by Sonya Sones

A verse novel about the crises facing a woman as she turns 50. The poems, most no more than a page, follow California poet Holly as she struggles to finish her book of poetry. Holly is anxiety-ridden, not only because she can’t avoid the physical “skidmarks” of age as she approaches 50, but also because her adored only daughter Sam is a high-school senior getting ready to leave Holly and her artist husband Michael empty-nesters…

Tuesday August 15 - Ecomind: Changing the Way We Think, to Create the World We Want by Frances Moore Lappé

A pioneer of environmental education inspires advocacy on both local and national levels. Small Planet Institute founder Lappé, a “dyed-in-the-wool possibilist,” believes the problem with seeking solutions to crises lies not in the difficulty of implementation, but in the limiting rhetoric of consumerism, blame and shortage that discourages people from learning what teamwork can accomplish.

Thursday August 17 | 6-8 PM | Levenson Room

We once again welcome local genealogist Jennifer Shoer, aka The Scrappy Genealogist! Jennifer will help us unravel and understand the meaning and use of those DNA results we are all getting. Haplogroups, oh my! Have you tested at Family Tree DNA (FTDNA), 23andMe, or AncestryDNA? Are you wondering what your data show and what you should be doing next? What does it mean when I have a DNA match? Should I be concerned about sharing requests?

Jennifer is the Managing Genealogist of Reconnecting Relatives, LLC. Find her online at scrappygenealogist.com or reconnectingrelatives.com.

Chef Evan Mallett
Wednesday August 23 | 6:30 PM

Join us on Wednesday August 23 at 6:30 PM for an evening with Chef Evan Mallett, owner and head chef at Black Trumpet on Ceres Street. Chef Evan will give a presentation about his work and his book, Black Trumpet, and will offer samples for tasting! Don’t miss another fantastic culinary event at the library.

At the renowned Black Trumpet restaurant, Chef Evan and his staff reflect the constantly changing seasons of New England, celebrating the unique flavors and traditions of fished, farmed, and foraged foods in their ever-changing menus that rotate roughly every six weeks throughout the course of the year.

The basis of great cooking has always been the creative use of fresh, seasonal ingredients – whether the kitchen is at home or in a high-end restaurant. The Black Trumpet became nationally famous as a model for local food sourcing and community involvement, and Chef Evan’s book describes that journey, as well as also the growth and evolution of the local food movement.

Evan Mallett’s path to professional cooking was a sinuous one, wending its way from Washington, D.C. up the coast to Boston and ultimately the small seaport city of Portsmouth, New Hampshire.  In 2007 Evan and his wife Denise bought what would become the Black Trumpet, becoming stewards of an historic restaurant location—an old ship’s chandlery that in 1970 first opened as the legendary Blue Strawbery, a pioneer of New American cuisine. Evan is a three-time James Beard semi-finalist for Best Chef, Northeast. He is actively involved and sits on the boards of Chef's Collaborative, Slow Food Seacoast, and the Heirloom Harvest Project, an initiative that brings together farmers, chefs, and educators to identify and restore a food system native to the greater New England Seacoast region.

Wednesday August 30 - The Wee Free Men by Terry Pratchett

There will be upheavals in the human and fantasy worlds of elves and witches, with drastic consequences, and Tiffany, with only a frying pan for a weapon, is caught in the middle. In an effort to rescue her spoiled, candy-loving baby brother whom the Elf Queen has stolen with the temptation of endless sweets, Tiffany enlists the aid of the Wee Free Men. The baby’s rescue is accomplished with unrelenting drama, large servings of Pratchett’s ironic humor, and a unique cast of characters.

Monday September 11 - The Same Sky by Amanda Eyre Ward

Returning to a format that's proven effective in her past work, Ward creates two very different storylines with no obvious clues as to how they will intersect. Alice lives with her husband, Jake, in Austin, Texas, where they own a wildly successful barbecue joint but have been unlucky in their attempts to adopt a child…. Eleven-year-old Carla, in Honduras, sees her means of support slip away after her mother moves to America and her caretaker grandmother dies…. Both stories ask questions about what it is to be a survivor.

Tuesday September 19 - The Professor and the Madman: A Tale of Murder, Insanity, and the Making of the Oxford English Dictionary by Simon Winchester

Remarkably readable, this chronicle of lexicography roams from the great dictionary itself to hidden nooks in the human psyche that sometimes house the motives for murder, the sources for sanity, and the blueprint for creativity. Manchester Guardian journalist Winchester turns from Asia toward that most British of topics: the Oxford English Dictionary. His account is studded with odd persons and unexpected drama.

Wednesday September 27 - Hard-Boiled Wonderland and the End of the World by Haruki Murakami

A stunning combination of the contemporary and brash with elegiac allegory, all topped off by a strong measure of cyberpunk. The "hard-boiled" hero, 35 and divorced, is a man of possessions--a collection of imported whiskeys; interests--old American movies and cooking; but no emotions. Which, coupled with his brilliant work on computers, makes him the ideal candidate for a mysterious aging scientist holed up under the sewers of Tokyo.

Monday October 2 - Beasts of No Nation by Uzodinma Iweala

This astonishing debut by a gifted 23-year-old American of Nigerian ancestry tracks an African child soldier’s descent into hell. Resilient but terrified, Little Agu is a wide-eyed, preteen boy thrown among the demented and the depraved. At the start, in an unspecified West African country, he’s being dragged out of a shack in the bush and beaten by another child. There are trucks, and soldiers in rags. They offer Agu food and water and the chance to be a soldier. Agu accepts….

Tuesday October 17 - Salt: A World History by Mark Kurlansky

A lively social history that does for salt what Kurlansky previously did for Cod (1997)…. Without salt, Kurlansky states at the outset, there would be no life, let alone a nifty preservative for everything from herring to mummies. Salt keeps the muscles pumping, the blood flowing, the brain firing. Its importance has trailed endless strife.

Wednesday October 25 - The Ballad of Black Tom by Victor LaValle & The Horror at Red Hook by H.P. Lovecraft

LaValle cleverly retcons H.P. Lovecraft’s infamous story “The Horror at Red Hook,” retelling it with a new protagonist (the titular Charles Thomas Tester, a splendidly Lovecraftian name) and a literary veneer that recalls Chester Himes. Tester, a con artist in 1924 Harlem with a minor awareness of the occult, occasionally masquerades as a street musician, playing the guitar (poorly) while pulling his hustles. When he’s approached by the eccentric Robert Suydam to play at a party, he knows something’s awry, but the money’s too good to pass up.

Tuesday November 21 - Outliers: The Story of Success by Malcolm Gladwell

There is a logic behind why some people become successful, and it has more to do with legacy and opportunity than high IQ. In his latest book, New Yorker contributor Gladwell casts his inquisitive eye on those who have risen meteorically to the top of their fields, analyzing developmental patterns and searching for a common thread. The author asserts that there is no such thing as a self-made man, that “the true origins of high achievement” lie instead in the circumstances and influences of one’s upbringing, combined with excellent timing.

Wednesday November 29 - A Wrinkle in Time by Madeleine L’Engle

An allegorical fantasy in which a group of young people are guided through the universe by Mrs. Who, Mrs. Which and Mrs. What -- women who possess supernatural powers. They traverse fictitious regions, meet and face evil and demonstrate courage at the right moment. Religious allusions are secondary to the philosophical struggle designed to yield the meaning of life and one's place on earth. Young Meg's willingness to face IT in the form of a black beast in order to save a dear friend is one sign of her growing awareness.

Tuesday December 19 - To the End of June: The Intimate Life of American Foster Care by Cris Beam

Journalist Beam examines what is needed to improve the way we care for troubled families and children. In 2001, as a high school teacher, the author was able to provide a home for her 17-year-old transgender student. Prompted by this experience, she went on to spend five years exploring the contradictions within the child welfare system, seeking to find out why the 500,000 kids in American foster care were “twice as likely to develop Posttraumatic Stress Disorder" as combat veterans.
