May 31 – Grass by Sheri Tepper

Generations in the future, when humanity has spread to other planets and Earth is ruled by Sanctity, a dour, coercive religion that looks to resurrection of the body by storing cell samples of its communicants, a plague is threatening to wipe out mankind. The only planet that seems to be spared is Grass… it was settled by families of European nobility who live on vast estancias and indulge in the ancient sport of fox hunting--although the horses, hounds and foxes aren't what they what they appear to be.

13 Reasons Why Not
Tuesday June 6 | 7 – 8:30 PM

Students, parents, caregivers, teachers, and the general public are invited to attend a panel discussion this month on the teen novel and Netflix series 13 Reasons Why. Panelists will include:

  • Tracey Tucker, Executive Director of New Heights, Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselor and owner/therapist of Tradeport Counseling and Mediation Associates
  • Laura Rubin, Ph.D., Clinical Psychologist, Portsmouth Neuropsychology Center
  • Jodie Lubarsky, MA, LCMHC Child, Adolescent and Family Services Director at Seacoast Mental Health Center, Inc.

13 Reasons Why, by Jay Asher, is a teen novel published in 2007 and celebrating its 10th anniversary. Netflix produced an original TV series based on the book, which premiered in March 2017. Both the book and the show have sparked strong reactions, both positive and negative. Portsmouth Public Library’s Youth Services librarians are aware that the popular book is in bigger demand than ever since the show was aired. Knowing there are concerns about the way suicide is portrayed, we will offer a venue for people to talk about them.

The conversation, “13 Reasons Why Not” – named after a project underway by Oxford High School (MI) students – will take place on Tuesday, June 6 from 7 to 8:30 PM in the Levenson Room. Panelists will discuss the controversy; how parents & caregivers can support or set boundaries around their kids watching the show; strategies for discussing depression, mental illness and suicide; how to help at-risk teens access support, and more. Time will be provided for questions and group discussion.

We hope you will join us to connect with others around the issues raised by this story.

Ikebana Exhibit & Demonstration
June 15 - 17
Demo: Saturday June 17, 2 – 3 PM

Fascinated by Japanese flower arranging? Come to a demonstration and exhibit of Ikenobo Ikebana at the Portsmouth Public Library.

At 12:30 PM on Thursday June 15, an Ikenobo Ikebana exhibit will be unveiled in the library lobby. The exhibit runs through June 17. An Ikenobo Ikebana demonstration will be held in the Levenson Room on Saturday June 17, 2 – 3 PM.

Ikebana is a way to express one’s feelings with each individual flower.

Many different Ikebana styles have appeared during the 550 years of Ikebana history. They each have a distinctive character and are arranged with a particular form or pattern in mind. However, awareness of natural beauty allows the arranger to gradually approach the ideal beauty which Ikebana seeks.

The Kittery Point Ikenobo Chapter is sponsoring this event and welcomes you to its celebration of this centuries-old floral art form. The Kittery Point Chapter is affiliated with the Ikenobo Ikebana Society of America in San Francisco and Ikenobo Headquarters in Kyoto, Japan. Four members of the Kittery Point Chapter will demonstrate four different Ikebana styles. The exhibit in the library lobby will be of arrangements made by members of the Kittery Point Ikenobo Chapter.

This event is free and open to the public!

Four-Week Watercolor Class
Mondays | 7 – 8:30 PM
June 26, July 10, July 17, July 24
(No class on Monday July 3)

This free watercolor class is offered as part of our Summer Art at the Library series. Space is limited and registration is required. Please call 766-1720 or visit the reference desk to register.

Watercolor is one of the most pleasurable and satisfying media employed by both beginning and experienced artists. The soft transparent colors and textures lend themselves to a variety of subjects and techniques, and yield paintings that reflect the unique spontaneity and creativity of each individual artist.

In this class you will explore techniques such as planning out your painting with an initial sketch, painting wet into wet, building a ground color, and how to use a sponge to create texture and even remove paint.

About the Instructor: Emily Kalina is an accomplished artist who is currently inspired by the natural beauty of the New England Seacoast. In 2009, Kalina left the gallery world in which she exhibited and sold her signature style of layered, textured and patterned watercolors to pursue the exciting world of print and textile design. Using her watercolors as a basis for her prints, she combines her sharp eye for trends with an innate sense of color and style to produce vibrant designs that are appealing to a wide variety of clientele. There are numerous stores where you can find her prints, postcards, greeting cards, and more.

A list of suggested materials is available upon registration.

You must register to attend this course. Space is limited. Please call 766-1720 or visit the Reference Desk to register.

Tides: The Science and Spirit of the Ocean
Tuesday June 27 | 7 PM

Levenson Community Room

FREE. Books available for purchase!

After nearly losing his 65’ wooden schooner in a large Alaskan tide, writer, sailor, and surfer Jonathan White vowed to understand the tide. He knew the moon had something to do with it, but what exactly? He read a book, then two. Ten years later, he had read three hundred books and criss-crossed the seven seas to see the largest, fastest, scariest, and most amazing tides in the world. With photographs, stories, and short readings, Jonathan takes his audiences on an enthralling journey into the surprising and poetic workings of the tide.

Jonathan White is the author of Tides: The Science and Spirit of the Ocean (Trinity University Press). jonathanwhitewriter.com

SENSORY FRIENDLY means we will have low lights on, lower volume than traditional movie showings. People may sing, dance, move around, and may be good for people with autism. We expect an accepting audience of a more non-traditional movie experience and to be respectful of others including those who have sensory sensitivities.

July 10 – At the Edge of the Orchard by Tracy Chevalier

A compelling showcase of 19th-century American pioneering spirit in which a family from Connecticut struggles to establish an apple orchard in the swamplands of Ohio. James Goodenough can trace his family and his beloved Golden Pippin apples back to England, though he seeks his own future away from his family's farm. The story of his adventure going west unfolds from his point of view as well as from that of Sadie, his contentious wife, a tough woman with a wild libido and a hankering for applejack.

2017. Rated PG. 127 minutes.

As the United States raced against Russia to put a man in space, NASA found untapped talent in a group of African-American female mathematicians that served as the brains behind one of the greatest operations in U.S. history. Dorothy Vaughan, Mary Jackson, and Katherine Johnson crossed all gender, race, and professional lines while their brilliance and desire to dream big, beyond anything ever accomplished before by the human race, firmly cemented them in U.S. history as true American heroes.

July 18 – My Life in France by Julia Child

With Julia Child's death in 2004 at age 91, her grandnephew Prud'homme completed this playful memoir of the famous chef's first, formative sojourn in France with her new husband, Paul Child, in 1949. The couple met during WWII in Ceylon, working for the OSS, and soon after moved to Paris, where Paul worked for the U.S. Information Service. Child describes herself as a "rather loud and unserious Californian," 36, six-foot-two and without a word of French, while Paul was 10 years older, an urbane, well-traveled Bostonian. Startled to find the French amenable and the food delicious, Child enrolled at the Cordon Bleu…

July 26 – Signal to Noise by Silvia Moreno-Garcia

In 1988 Mexico City, 15-year-old Meche and her only friends, book-loving Sebastian and dreamer Daniela, discover literal magic in Meche’s record collection. They use their newfound powers to raise their social status, but the emotional stresses of magic and adolescence test their friendships to the breaking point. In 2009, Meche returns to Mexico City for the funeral of her father, a radio deejay and washout performer who fed her love of music, and confronts her estranged friends, reopening old wounds.

Got your DNA test results back? Now What!? with Jennifer Shoer

Thursday August 17 | 6-8 PM | Levenson Room

We once again welcome local genealogist Jennifer Shoer, aka The Scrappy Genealogist! Jennifer will help us unravel and understand the meaning and use of those DNA results we are all getting. Haplogroups, oh my! Have you tested at Family Tree DNA (FTDNA), 23andMe, or AncestryDNA? Are you wondering what your data show and what you should be doing next? What does it mean when I have a DNA match? Should I be concerned about sharing requests?

Jennifer is the Managing Genealogist of Reconnecting Relatives, LLC. Find her online at scrappygenealogist.com or reconnectingrelatives.com.

The Memoir Writers Group at PPL meets on Monday mornings twice a month.

No matter what your writing level, the group welcomes all people who desire to record their remembrances. We learn by submitting rough drafts and participating in constructive critiques. We love to laugh and have fun, even when a memoir pulls our heartstrings.
