Eclipse Event -Chasing the Moon's Shadow

Get ready for a fantastic family experience, just days before the Great North American Eclipse of 2024 on April 8th! The stage is set for a captivating presentation that will delight family members of all ages. NASA Solar System Ambassador Pat Monteith will take families on a journey through the upcoming eclipse. Using a mix of exciting visuals, interactive elements, and easy-to-understand explanations, the presentation unfolds the magic of the Earth, Moon, and Sun dancing together in the sky. Pat will explain the science behind the eclipse, making it fun and fascinating for kids and adults alike. There's a special focus on the unique aspects of this particular eclipse since more than 90% of the sun will be blocked by the moon in the Boston area; this won’t happen again for another 40 years! All participants will receive a pair of authorized eclipse safety viewing glasses. Registration required.  Please call or visit the library to register.

Since retiring from UMass Boston several years ago, Pat Monteith rekindled her interest in the space program and was selected as a NASA/JPL Solar System Ambassador in 2016, a role in which she has conducted nearly 100 programs about NASA and various space science topics.

Author Talk: Ann B. Parson -The Birds of Dog: An Historical Novel Based on Mostly True Events

Join us as we welcome Ann B. Parson to share her latest book The Birds of Dog: An Historical Novel Based on Mostly True Events. The Birds of Dog opens in the early days of the Boston Society of Natural History and simmers with remarkable lost stories about America's emerging fields of science and its first scientists. Catharine Pickering, a curator's assistant, finds herself increasingly drawn to Nature's treasures, especially birds, and more and more opposed to the "kill-and-collect" methods of hunters. Her cousin, Charles Pickering, is off serving as chief zoologist for the Navy's first voyage of discovery to the South Seas, and her outbound letters tell of scientific findings at home and memorable encounters-with John James Audubon, Junius Brutus Booth, Charles Dickens, and other eminent visitors to Boston. When she meets James Cutting, a brilliant inventor whose discovery leads to the world's first public aquarium, she finds a kindred soul. It's plain to both that certain new technologies are on a destructive course with Nature-guns, in particular, have strayed far from their original purpose.
The Boston Society of Natural History eventually evolved into Boston's Museum of Science.

Ann is a science journalist who specializes in medicine, the environment and technology. Among her previous titles, The Proteus Effect; Stem Cells and Their Promise for Medicine was chosen for Library Journal’s annual list of best science books. Decoding Darkness; The Search for the Genetic Causes of Alzheimer's Disease, co-authored with neuroscientist Rudolph Tanzi, and a previous book on women’s health were widely hailed as leaders among comparable titles. She has written for numerous newspapers and journals, as well as taught science journalism at the graduate level. She lives in South Dartmouth. For more background, please visit www.annparson.com

Summer Concert Series - 60's Thunder

The Summer Concert Series kicks off with 60's Thunder!

Without a doubt, the 1960’s was the big bang of popular music. No other decade can touch the number of timeless songs we still cherish from the 60’s.  Take a step back in time with New England’s premier 1960’s tribute band, 60’s Thunder.  Be transported to the “decade of change” with a diverse song selection delivered with youthful exuberance, authentic instruments, and sweet harmonies. Dance the night away to tracks by the Beatles, The Rolling Stones, The Doors, Motown classics and many more. Can you dig it?

The 60’s Thunder are: Ian Motha on bass and vocals, DJ Bean on rhythm guitar and vocals, Matt Borrello on lead guitar and vocals, and Liam Barry on drums and vocals. https://60sthunder.com/

Concerts are held rain or shine.  Join us under the pavilion, or in the community room in the event of rain. This program is supported in part by a grant from the Acushnet Cultural Council, a local agency which is supported by the Mass Cultural Council, a state agency.

Summer Concert Series - Pearly Baker Band

The Summer Concert Series continues and the Pearly Baker Band is back!  Bring a blanket or chair and join us under the pavilion.

The Pearly Baker Band is known for playing Grateful Dead music, but they don’t consider themselves a cover band—they play Dead music their way. Early on, Pearly Baker realized that the Grateful Dead had created an interesting musical template that can be used by others to raise the level of joy in the world, song by song, show by show. The quartet features Tim Richmond on bass guitar, Ken Richards on guitar, Mike Mahoney on guitar and Eric Costa playing keyboard.

Summer Concert Series - The Jethros

The Summer Concert Series returns and the Jethros are back!  Bring a blanket or chair and join us under the pavilion.

The Jethros realized their common destiny while collaborating in a backup band for mutual friends. Over the years they've become something of a fixture in the folk music scene of New Bedford and nearby places, and were the founders of the New Bedford Folk Festival's Southcoast Stage. Their original songs and unique arrangements are consistently lauded by critics of art, music, and architecture; frequently covered by other local musicians; and captured in three albums of recorded music.

The family tree goes like this: Gaston Jethro plays bass as though it were seven distinct instruments;  Rufus Jethro sings and plays trumpet, trombone, and uke; Cornelius Jethro plays drums; Homer Jethro sings and plays guitar;  LeRoy Jethro plays trombone; and Boney Jethro whistles and plays fiddle, bones, and other small percussion.  Together they are The Jethros, and they are delighted to present their folk / blues / alt /soul / swing-jazz / bluegrass / funk / country / mariachi / klezmer stylings to one and all.
