Learn and play American Style Mah Jongg every Tuesday and Thursday at 12:30 in the Community Meeting Room with this enthusiastic group!

Join Barbara LaSala for two weekly afternoons of Mah Jongg.  Everyone from beginners to established players is invited to join this group! We meet in the Community Meeting Room downstairs at RPL . Mah Jongg  as it is generally played today can be traced back to the end of the last century.  The line of games that evolved to Mah Jongg is long and extensive. From around 800 AD card games were played which resembled the way Mah Jongg is played, in the fact that you have to collect Chows, Pungs and Kongs. The cards used in these games resembled the money used in those days.  It was not before the turn of this century until the West got a glimpse of Mah Jongg, when it was introduced in the international colony of Shanghai and from then onwards in the USA, Japan and finally Europe.  Attend to find out more about this Internationally popular game of strategy.

Coloring is an activity that we tend to associate with children. As we grow older, we put aside our crayons and colored pencils in favor of more respectable writing utensils like pens and highlighters. However, it turns out coloring can be beneficial for adults — namely for its de-stressing power. The practice generates wellness, quietness and also stimulates brain areas related to motor skills, the senses and creativity.

Join us in the New Hampshire Room from 11 AM - 12 PM for an hour of relaxing stress-free coloring!

Set against the sweeping tide of history, this is the breathtaking tale of a romance that crosses political, geographic, and religious divides. Azerbaijan, 1918: though he is Muslim and she is Christian, Ali (Adam Bakri) and Nino (Maria Valverde) defy their parents and marry. At first it appears that their all-consuming love will be enough to overcome the differences in their backgrounds. But their bond is soon put the test, first as she confronts what it means to be a westernized woman living in a traditionalist society, and then again when everything they know is turned upside down by the arrival of World War I. Directed by Academy Award-winning filmmaker Asif Kapadia (Amy) from a script by Atonement screenwriter Christopher Hampton, Ali and Nino transports viewers to a land of awe-inspiring beauty and a time of great upheaval. With Mandy Patinkin.   100 min

In 1958, in the state of Virginia, the idea of interracial marriage was not only considered to be immoral to many, it was also illegal. When Richard (Joel Edgerton, Black Mass) and Mildred (Ruth Negga, World War Z) fall in love, they are aware of the eyes staring at them and the words said behind their backs. It is when they get married, however, that words and looks become actions, and the two are arrested. The couple decide to take their case all of the way to the Supreme Court in order to fight for their love in this passionate and gripping drama that critics are calling "a masterpiece."  123 min   PG-13

Sponsored by the Rye Historical Society.
Ogden Nash and his family spent their summers on Little Boar's Head, in North Hampton, NH. Using examples from their original stage work, "Home is Heaven," Pontine Theatre explores the ways in which Nash's life on the New Hampshire seashore influenced his poems, giving the reader insight into the man, his character, and his ideas about family, society, and nature. These themes form a rich portrait of the poet and underscore how the intersection of literature and local history can deepen our understanding and appreciation of everyday events in our own backyard.
