    Read to a Pet offers a chance for children to try the most relaxing, non-threatening way to practice reading out loud - reading to a dog or cat.

These visiting furry friends have been trained and certified by Paws for Love as therapy animals and are mellow and friendly. They visit the library on the second and last Saturday of each month.

This is a drop-in program open to interested young readers. Read to a Pet

Salem Public Library hosts two adult book discussion groups, Books for Lunch and Books for Dessert. Participation in the groups is free and open to the public, and new members are always welcome. Copies of the discussion books are available for checkout at the Information Desk.

These groups are made possible through the support of the Friends of the Salem Public Library and the Salem Public Library Foundation.

    Speaker Carol Adelman, President of the Pacific Northwest Peony Society, will discuss the history of peonies in Salem and the Willamette Valley, including why peony blooms from the Willamette Valley are larger and more brightly colored than peonies from elsewhere. The program will also include information on peony varieties, how and where to plant peonies, how to cut peonies, and how to provide the longest vase life.

This program is free and open to the public. Attendees will receive a source list of specialty growers, and there will opportunities to win door prizes.

    Members of the Binford and Ross family will share their experiences living in Africa last year. This family-friendly slide show is filled with images primarily from Southern Africa (South Africa, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Zambia, Namibia, and Swaziland), including animals, plants, landscape, people, and cultures.

The family’s adventures included climbing some of the tallest sand dunes in the world, rafting Class 4 and 5 rapids on the Zambezi River, swimming in an infinity pool at the top of Victoria Falls, being charged by a rhino, and more.  The program will also include Africa travel tips for families with children. 

People of all ages are welcome at this free presentation. The program is sponsored by A. C. Gilbert’s Discovery Village and Heritage School. Special Events

    Once again, Richard Ritchey, “The Reptile Man,” will amaze and awe audience members. He will share fascinating information about the many reptiles and amphibians that he brings to show, including a king cobra, a rattlesnake, and a giant python!

There are three shows scheduled at 11 a.m., 1 p.m. and 7 p.m. for the Reptile Man.

Summer performers provide family entertainment each Wednesday from June 19 to July 31. All shows are in Loucks Auditorium. Free tickets are available at 10 a.m. the day of the show.

Salem Public Library hosts two adult book discussion groups, Books for Lunch and Books for Dessert. Participation in the groups is free and open to the public, and new members are always welcome. Copies of the discussion books are available for checkout at the Information Desk.

These groups are made possible through the support of the Friends of the Salem Public Library and the Salem Public Library Foundation.

    Read to a Pet offers a chance for children to try the most relaxing, non-threatening way to practice reading out loud - reading to a dog or cat.

These visiting furry friends have been trained and certified by Paws for Love as therapy animals and are mellow and friendly. They visit the library on the second and last Saturday of each month.
