May book: The Fault in Our Stars by John Green - After Hazel Grace Lancaster and Augustus Waters meet in a cancer support group, they irreverently pursue big answers from the author of Hazel’s favorite book, and find humor and even beauty in the darkest of moments.

Middle and high school-aged youth are invited to weigh in and share their thoughts about some great books. Copies of the next book are available at the Teen Scene Desk.

Preschoolers, homeschoolers, and elementary classes are invited to gain entry to this fun kick-off concert by signing up online or in person for Salem Public Library’s Summer Reading Club. Red Yarn’s antics will make feet tap and children of all ages laugh!

Doors open 15 minutes before each performance. This event replaces the regular Tuesday morning storytimes for that week.

June book: Going Clear by Lawrence Wright

Salem Public Library hosts two adult book discussion groups, Books for Lunch and Books for Dessert. Participation in the groups is free and open to the public, and new members are always welcome. Copies of the discussion books are available for checkout at the Information Desk.

These groups are made possible through the support of the Friends of the Salem Public Library and the Salem Public Library Foundation.

Author Brian Doyle photo

Oregon author, Brian Doyle, will read from and discuss his latest novel, Martin Marten. Doyle has written 14 books including nonfiction and collections of short stories, essays, and poems. He is well known for his previous novels, Mink River and The Plover.

Martin Marten, set along the Zigzag River on the flanks of Mt Hood, braids the stories of David, a 14-year-old boy, and of a young pine marten, named Martin.

This free event, sponsored by the Salem Public Library Foundation, will help launch the Library’s Adult Summer Reading Program.

Middle and high school-aged youth are invited to get creative by covering the Peace Plaza with designs, interesting pictures, tributes to favorite books, encouragements to read, and more.

New sixth graders (those starting middle school in the fall) will receive a special welcome, with tours of the Teen Scene area by members of the Teen Advisory Board and activity tables to preview the fun available at Teen Scene special programs and activities.

This is an open house-style event. Youth and their families may drop by to create anytime between 4 and 6 p.m.
