This summer, middle and high school-aged youth are invited to kick back and enjoy movies on the big screen TV in the Teen Scene. Fresh popcorn and drinks are served. Seating is free on a first-come, first-seated basis.

Based on the best-selling John Green novel, The Fault in Our Stars, Hazel Grace Lancaster and Augustus Waters connect in their cancer support group meeting in a church basement. As their relationship deepens, they irreverently explore the impact of cancer, pursue big answers from the author of Hazel’s favorite book, and find humor and even beauty in the darkest of moments. (PG-13; 126 minutes; 2014)

Due to licensing restrictions, we are unable to give the titles of the movies here, but these descriptions should be helpful!

Steve delivers his brand of blue-eyed soul Americana in the tradition of Daryl Hall, Sam Cooke, and Bill Withers. Born and raised in Salem, Steve Hale has been a singer, songwriter, and producer for over 30 years.

Free tickets will be available at the Central Library’s Information Desk and the West Salem Branch Service Desk beginning July 2. Tickets are valid until 10 minutes before performance time. After 33 years of dedicated service to the Salem community, B.J. Toewe is set to retire from Salem Public Library in July. A retirement party in her honor will be held from 3-5 p.m. Friday, July 10 in Story Rooms A&B at Salem Public Library.

B.J. began her work in Salem in 1982 when she became Youth Services Manager. She remained in that position until 2010, when she was named Library Administrator.

She has accomplished much during her five years in that position, including renovating and opening a dedicated Teen Scene area in 2011, moving the audio-visual collection to the main floor of the library and expanding the Technology Center in 2013, and the remodel of the Children’s Room in 2014-2015.

“It has been an honor to serve this community through my work at the library and a joy to work with such a dedicated staff,” B.J. said.

B.J. is a native of eastern Pennsylvania who earned her Masters of Library Science from Rutgers University. She is the 1990 recipient of the Oregon Library Association’s Evelyn Sibley Lampman Award, recognizing significant contributions to children’s services in Oregon, and the 2005 honoree for the OLA Distinguished Service Award, recognizing exceptional service to Oregon libraries.

Salem-based songwriter, musician, and singer Lisa Lee will walk a small group of interested students through the basics of creating beautiful music from their own imagination. This workshop is best suited for students with some musical training and students are encouraged to bring their instrument of choice (string, wind, brass, voice, etc.). After an afternoon of hands-on work, participants will give a free public performance of their fledgling compositions. The workshop is free to middle and high school-aged youth, supported by a grant from the Marion Cultural Development Corporation.

This summer, middle and high school-aged youth are invited to kick back and enjoy movies on the big screen TV in the Teen Scene. Fresh popcorn and drinks are served. Seating is free on a first-come, first-seated basis.

In this modern version of of Jane Austen’s Emma, popular sophomore Cher Horowitz decides to play matchmaker for a "clueless" transfer student. When things go wrong, she learns some hard facts about life as well as the secrets of her own heart. (PG-13; 97 minutes; 1995)
