This summer, middle and high school-aged youth are invited to kick back and enjoy movies on the big screen TV in the Teen Scene. Fresh popcorn and drinks are served. Seating is free on a first-come, first-seated basis.

Based on the C.S. Lewis classic novel The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe, when the four Pevensie children are sent to the country during WWII, they discover a wardrobe that leads them into a world called Narnia where they find themselves fighting against the evil White Witch. (PG; 143 minutes; 2005)

Due to licensing restrictions, we are unable to give the titles of the movies here, but these descriptions should be helpful!

Gathered for the purpose of discussing how to apprehend the notorious villain Da Bomb, the Justice Confereration is stunned when a fellow hero drops to the floor – dead! With middle and high school-aged youth each playing the part of the superheroes, they must piece together the clues and discover whodunit. Heroic costumes are highly encouraged.

The celebration will also feature a small historical display highlighting what Salem, the Library and the Friends looked like in 1965.

August book: Astoria by Peter Stark

Salem Public Library hosts two adult book discussion groups, Books for Lunch and Books for Dessert. Participation in the groups is free and open to the public, and new members are always welcome. Copies of the discussion books are available for checkout at the Information Desk.

Paul Gerald is a prolific author on the topics of hiking and camping in Oregon. Among his books are: 60 Hikes Within 60 Miles of Portland, The Best in Tent Camping, Oregon, and Peaceful Places: Portland.

He will speak about his experiences hiking Oregon segments of the famous Pacific Crest Trail. These experiences went into his book, Day and Overnight Hikes on the Pacific Crest Trail in Oregon.

The Pacific Crest Trail stretches from the Mexican border to Canada through California, Oregon, and Washington. Gerald says of the trail, “It isn’t just a trail; it’s a subculture, a tribe, a way of life, a state of mind.”

This program offers children a relaxing, non-threatening way to improve their reading skills. Visiting dogs and cats have been trained and certified as therapy animals by Paws for Love and are mellow and friendly. This is a drop-in program, so sign-ups are not necessary.

This summer, middle and high school-aged youth are invited to kick back and enjoy movies on the big screen TV in the Teen Scene. Fresh popcorn and drinks are served. Seating is free on a first-come, first-seated basis.

When a canine and his adopted son travel through time, events in history spiral out of control to disastrous and comical results and it’s up to them to put things back on track before the space-time continuum is destroyed. (PG; 92 minutes; 2014)
