The therapeutic exercises in the Laughter Yoga classes are the perfect boost for those in transition or just dealing with day to day life challenges. Bring your original 3-minute work and get ready to slam. Cash prizes will be awarded. A $3.00 donation is required, and poets and judges enter free. Central Library Book Sales - The Central Library's book sales are run by the Friends of the Central Library every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. Hours are: Friday - 9:30 a.m. - 5 p.m.; Saturday - 9:30 a.m. - 4 p.m.; and, Sunday - 1 - 5 p.m. There are special book items, videos, maps, etc. Prices, unless noted on the items, are: hardbacks $1, large paperback $1, small pocketbooks $.50 or 3 for $1, records and audio cassettes $1, CDs and videos $2. Central Friends (a 501(c)(3) nonprofit corporation) will be happy to receive your tax-deductible donations of new and used books, records, tapes, CDs, etc. to help maintain the Book Sales. Note: Donations may be taken to Central Library during the Book Sale hours only. Celebrate Chinese New Year - The Chinese New Year begins on February 14 this year, and it is the Year of the Tiger. The Chinese Lunar Calendar is 2,638 years older than ours and never begins on January 1st, nor does it begin on the same date each year. It can begin any time between January 21st and February 18th, depending on the date of the New Moon in Aquarius. Each year is named for an animal. Every 12 years this cycle begins again.
Chinese New Year is considered a major holiday for the Chinese and has influenced the new year celebrations of its geographic neighbors, as well as cultures with whom the Chinese have had extensive interaction. These include Koreans, Mongolians, Nepalese, Bhutanese, Vietnamese and formerly the Japanese before 1873. Chinese New Year is also celebrated in Singapore, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Thailand and other countries with significant Chinese populations, but it is not part of the traditional culture of these countries.
