    Contact: Library   619-236-5800   weblibrary@sandiego.gov
Book Cover Image Celebrate Chinese New Year - The Chinese New Year begins on February 14 this year, and it is the Year of the Tiger. The Chinese Lunar Calendar is 2,638 years older than ours and never begins on January 1st, nor does it begin on the same date each year. It can begin any time between January 21st and February 18th, depending on the date of the New Moon in Aquarius. Each year is named for an animal. Every 12 years this cycle begins again.

Chinese New Year is considered a major holiday for the Chinese and has influenced the new year celebrations of its geographic neighbors, as well as cultures with whom the Chinese have had extensive interaction. These include Koreans, Mongolians, Nepalese, Bhutanese, Vietnamese and formerly the Japanese before 1873. Chinese New Year is also celebrated in Singapore, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Thailand and other countries with significant Chinese populations, but it is not part of the traditional culture of these countries.

Nobel laureate Toni Morrison returns more explicitly to the net of pain cast by slavery, a theme she detailed so memorably in "Beloved." Set at the close of the 1600s, the book details America's untoward foundation: dominion over Native Americans, white indentured workers, women and African and Native American slaves. The event will take place at the Central Library, in the Wangenheim Room. This is a companion event to One Book, One San Diego.
