    Contact: Chris Gallery   805-564-5633   cgallery@santabarbaraca.gov
Screening of Which Way Home, part of the community reading program, Santa Barbara Reads. This year's book is Enrique's Journey / La Travesia de Enrique, by Sonia Nazario. Each year, thousands of Latin American migrants travel hundreds of miles to the United States, with many making their way on the tops of freight trains. Roughly five percent of those traveling alone are children.. This documentary follows several unaccompanied child migrants as they journey through Mexico en route to the U.S. on a freight train they call “The Beast.” Director Rebecca Cammisa tracks the stories of children like Olga and Freddy, nine-year old Hondurans who are desperately trying to reach their families in Minnesota, and Jose, a ten-year-old El Salvadoran who has been abandoned by smugglers and ends up alone in a Mexican detention center, and focuses on Kevin, a canny, streetwise 14-year-old Honduran, whose mother hopes that he will reach New York City and send money back to his family. Which Way Home shows the personal side of immigration through the eyes of children who face harrowing dangers, alone but with enormous courage and resourcefulness, as they endeavor to make it to the United States. 90 min., English and Spanish, 2009, USA. http://whichwayhome.net/ Presented in conjunction with UCSB Reads.     BREAKING THROUGH is based on the Francisco Jimenez novella. This is the Long awaited sequel to THE CIRCUIT.
In this moving sequel to The Circuit, Pancho and his family are caught by "la migra" and forced to leave their Santa Maria home because they are deported to Mexico. The entire family must now apply for legal entry to the United States. In the months and years that follow, Francisco and his family face poverty, long hours of field labor, and prejudice. But a division between father and son grows when Francisco gets a scholarship to attend college. His dreams are shattered when his father makes it clear that their financial future is certain to end in failure if the family does not stay together. For Grades 4 - 12.

Her humorous "La Dolce Vita" outlook will entertain and inspire you and before you know it you'll find that "Michele takes you on a journey of personal transformation and teaches you to prepare your own traditional Italian meals for your friends and family. Focusing on the importance of shopping for the highest-quality, seasonal produce, she challenges you to make the process part of the experience." (M. Schoenfield, This Yuppie Life).
