Facilitated by Susannah Risley

The Hero’s Journey of leaving the world of the known and venturing into the unknown is the world’s ancient myth. In modern times we do not slay dragons. Yet we might leave behind a safe world for an adventure that is just as demanding. Participants in this four-session writing workshop will explore the plot of the Hero’s Journey as a way to view and write about their own experiences and the wisdom gained from it.

Kristin Kimball, author of our One County, One Book choice, The Dirty Life: a Memoir of Farming, Food, and Love, shares such an experience with us.

Dr. Deidre Hill Butler

Facilitated by Dr. Deidre Hill Butler Sociology Professor and Director, Africana Studies Program at Union College

Why and how do we choose to serve others? What is the nature of the relationship between those who serve and those who are served? If we serve, what sustains and renews us?
Join us for a series of reflective discussions about short readings drawn from world literature, philosophy, and religion. Whether you are a college student or in mid-life and beyond, this will be a time to explore with others what it means to be committed to people in need. Readings will be provided.

Dr. Deidre Hill Butler is an Associate Professor of Sociology and Director of the Africana Studies Program at Union College in Schenectady, New York. Texas cowboy Ron Woodroof's free-wheeling life was overturned in 1985 when he was diagnosed as HIV-positive. Shunned and ostracized by many old friends and bereft of government-approved medicines, he decided to take matters in his own hands, tracking down alternative treatments from all over the world by means both legal and illegal. Bypassing the establishment, he joined forces with an unlikely band of renegades and outcasts and established a hugely successful 'buyers' club.'

Registration is required by calling 388.4511. Participants must attend all 5 sessions.

Dr. Deidre Hill Butler is an Associate Professor of Sociology and Director of the Africana Studies Program at Union College in Schenectady, New York. Professor Hill Butler’s academic research focuses on the roles of African American women within contemporary stepfamilies and representations of Black middle class women in the Obama era. She has published articles on Afro-Americans in New York Life and History: An Interdisciplinary Journal and the Journal of the Association for Research on Mothering. She is a lifetime member of the Association of Black Women Historians and contributed an article to Emerging Voices and Paradigms, the organization’s 2008 text. She has also guest-edited a special edition of the Journal of Pan African Studies (JPAS) on Africana mothering.

Anne BlankmanMeet Anne Blankman, local author of Prisoner of Night and Fog
(this program is appropriate for teens and adults)

Anne is a graduate of Niskayuna High School and earned degrees in English and History at Union College. After earning a master’s degree in information science, Anne began working as a youth services librarian. Currently, she lives in southeastern Virginia with her family. When she’s not writing young adult fiction, she’s playing with her daughter, training for races with her husband, working at her amazing library branch, learning to knit (badly), and reading. Prisoner of Night and Fog is her debut novel.

prisoner of night and fog

“Gretchen Müller has grown up in 1920s Germany believing her father sacrificed his life to shield “Uncle Dolf” from a fusillade of police bullets during Hitler’s failed 1923 attempt to overthrow the government. Because of her father’s martyrdom, Gretchen’s family has enjoyed favored status among the Nazis; she is now Hitler’s “favorite pet,” and her (terrifying) older brother works as one of his thuggish Brownshirts. Then Gretchen meets Daniel Cohen, a young reporter who has evidence that her father was not a Nazi hero, but a murder victim. Gretchen refuses to believe it, but as she undertakes her own investigation, she realizes that many things she had accepted as truth are lies.” ~Publisher Weekly (http://www.publishersweekly.com)

A book sale and signing, conducted by the Open Door Bookstore, will follow the progam.

Books Sandwiched In
Sponsored by the Friends of the Library

The Curious Incident of the Dog in Night-Time by Mark Haddon, reviewed by Janine Kruiswijk, Executive Director of the Autism Society of the Greater Capital Region and the parent of a young adult with autism. The novel is narrated in the first-person perspective by Christopher John Francis Boone, a 15-year-old boy who describes himself as “a mathematician with some behavioral difficulties” living in Swindon, Wiltshire. According to author Haddon,“Curious Incident is not a book about Asperger’s....if anything it’s a novel about difference, about being an outsider, about seeing the world in a surprising and revealing way.”

The Monday series of talks is held at noon in the McChesney Room of the Central Library on Clinton Street. You may bring a bag lunch; coffee and tea are available for a nominal fee. The room is equipped with special devices for the hearing-impaired. These programs are also broadcast on the Schenectady Public Access channel. See program listing for days and times.

Wadjda

Reem Abdullah, Waad Mohammed, Sultan Al Assaf; Sony Pictures Classics; Directed by Haifaa al-Mansour; Rated PG; 97 minutes; 2014

An enterprising Saudi girl signs on for her school's Koran recitation competition as a way to raise the remaining funds she needs in order to buy the bicycle that has captured her interest. The first feature film shot entirely in Saudi Arabia, and the first film made by a Saudi woman, this is a compassionate story of freedom (or the lack thereof) and what it means to grow up as a woman in Saudi Arabia.

Toddler Time is a program series designed as a shared library experience for two year olds, with a caregiver. The librarian will share age appropriate stories, songs, fingerplays, activities and crafts in a group setting. Adults who accompany Toddlers are encouraged to actively participate as a model for their child. It is our goal to provide an educational experience that is also entertaining, and to nurture an early love of books and reading.
For children ages 24-36 months with an adult caregiver.

Drop in for stories, songs, fingerplays and a simple craft!

Pre-school story hour is a weekly, 30-minute story program for independent children age three to five. The librarian will share the best in children's literature and illustration, and will enhance the story time with songs, fingerplays, flannelboard and occasional crafts. In addition to sharing enriching literature, we will reinforce traditional pre-school concepts such as counting, identifying colors, animal names, etc. Pre-school children with rich and varied literacy experiences have many advantages when they begin school.
For preschoolers ages 3 - 5.

Our Baby Time programs have been carefully prepared as a shared library experience for children under age two, with a caregiver. The librarian will share simple stories, songs and finger plays, as well as activities using music and movement. There is much research that shows how early literacy experiences build important brain connections in very young children.
For children birth to 24 months with an adult caregiver.
