Calling Invisible WomenJoin us for a discussion of the book Calling Invisible Women by Jeanne Ray.

A delightfully funny novel packing a clever punch, from the author of the New York Times bestselling Julie and Romeo.
A mom in her early fifties, Clover knows she no longer turns heads the way she used to, and she's only really missed when dinner isn't on the table on time. Then Clover wakes up one morning to discover she's invisible--truly invisible.  Clover discovers that there are other women like her, women of a certain age who seem to have disappeared.  As she uses her invisibility to get to know her family and her town better, Clover leads the way in helping invisible women become recognized and appreciated no matter what their role.  Smart and hilarious, with indomitable female characters, Calling Invisible Women will appeal to anyone who has ever felt invisible.

Elizabeth Rosner

Meet the Schenctady native and author of The Speed of Light, Blue Nude and soon-to-be released, Electric City and Gravity

Elizabeth Rosner grew up in Schenectady, New York as a daughter of Jewish holocaust survivors. Her father, who was born in Hamburg, Germany, was sent to Buchenwald concentration camp, while her mother survived the war by hiding in the Polish countryside. Much of Ms. Rosner’s writing reflects her efforts to come to terms with the impact of her parents’ experiences on her own life, the indelible imprints of their history on her language, her identity, and her imagination.

“Electric City is a vital, pulsing, epic novel of America, of its great scientific ingenuity and its emotional ambition; one that frames the birth and evolution of its towns against the struggles of its indigenous tribes, the immigrant experience, a country divided, and the technological advancements that ushered in the modern world.”

Gravity is a full-length collection of poetry that can be read as an autobiographical companion to her novels. These prize-winning poems offer insight into the author’s background and reveal many of the inspirations for The Speed of Light, Blue Nude and Electric City. ~www.elizabethrosner.com

A book sale and signing, conducted by The Open Door Bookstore, will follow the program. They will be offering a 20% discount on Electric city and Gravity. To order your copy, call the store at 518.346.2719.

Icy SparksJoin us for a discussion of the book Icy Sparks by Gwyn Hyman Rubio

Icy Sparks is the sad, funny and transcendent tale of a young girl growing up in the mountains of Eastern Kentucky during the 1950’s. Gwyn Hyman Rubio’s beautifully written first novel revolves around Icy Sparks, an unforgettable heroine in the tradition of Scout in To Kill a Mockingbird or Will Treed in Cold Sassy Tree. At the age of ten, Icy, a bright, curious child orphaned as a baby but raised by adoring grandparents, begins to have strange experiences. Try as she might, her "secrets"—verbal croaks, groans, and physical spasms—keep afflicting her. As an adult, she will find out she has Tourette’s Syndrome, a rare neurological disorder, but for years her behavior is the source of mystery, confusion, and deep humiliation.

Personal History Book CoverJoin us for a discussion of the memoir Personal History by Katharine Graham

Winner of the 1998 Pulitzer Prize for Biography

An extraordinarily frank, honest, and generous book by one of America's most famous and admired women, Personal History is, as its title suggests, a book composed of both personal memoir and history.

It is the story of Graham's parents: the multimillionaire father who left private business and government service to buy and restore the down-and-out Washington Post, and the formidable, self-absorbed mother who was more interested in her political and charity work, and her passionate friendships, than in her children. It is the story of how The Washington Post struggled to succeed -- a fascinating and instructive business history as told from the inside.

The Invention of WingsJoin us for a discussion of the book The Invention of Wings by Sue Monk Kidd

Hetty "Handful” Grimke, an urban slave in early nineteenth century Charleston, yearns for life beyond the suffocating walls that enclose her within the wealthy Grimke household. The Grimke’s daughter, Sarah, has known from an early age she is meant to do something large in the world, but she is hemmed in by the limits imposed on women.

Kidd’s sweeping novel is set in motion on Sarah’s eleventh birthday, when she is given ownership of ten year old Handful, who is to be her handmaid. We follow their remarkable journeys over the next thirty-five years, as both strive for a life of their own, dramatically shaping each other’s destinies and forming a complex relationship marked by guilt, defiance, estrangement and the uneasy ways of love.

JB Bernstein is a once-successful sports agent who may have to close his business. To save it, he comes up with an idea so radical it just might work. Setting off for Mumbai, JB stages a televised nationwide competition called 'Million Dollar Arm' where two young finalists emerge as winners. JB brings them back to the US with a goal: get them signed as pitchers to a major league team. While the boys learn the game, they teach JB the meaning of teamwork and commitment, and JB finds a family.

From the New York Times bestselling author of Midwives and The Sandcastle Girls comes a spellbinding novel of love, despair, and revenge—set in war-ravaged Tuscany.

1943: Tucked away in the idyllic hills south of Florence, the Rosatis, an Italian family of noble lineage, believe that the walls of their ancient villa will keep them safe from the war raging across Europe. Eighteen-year-old Cristina spends her days swimming in the pool, playing with her young niece and nephew, and wandering aimlessly amid the estate’s gardens and olive groves. But when two soldiers, a German and an Italian, arrive at the villa asking to see an ancient Etruscan burial site, the Rosatis’ bucolic tranquility is shattered. A young German lieutenant begins to court Cristina, the Nazis descend upon the estate demanding hospitality, and what was once their sanctuary becomes their prison.

I am MalalaJoin us for a discussion of the memoir I Am Malala: The Girl Who Stood Up for Education and Was Shot by the Taliban by Malala Yousafzai

When the Taliban took control of the Swat Valley in Pakistan, one girl spoke out. Malala Yousafzai refused to be silenced and fought for her right to an education. On Tuesday, October 9, 2012, when she was fifteen, she almost paid the ultimate price. She was shot in the head at point-blank range while riding the bus home from school, and few expected her to survive.

Instead, Malala's miraculous recovery has taken her on an extraordinary journey from a remote valley in northern Pakistan to the halls of the United Nations in New York. At sixteen, she has become a global symbol of peaceful protest and the youngest nominee ever for the Nobel Peace Prize.

The Greater Journey is the enthralling, inspiring —and until now, untold — story of the adventurous American artists, writers, doctors, politicians, architects, and others of high aspiration who set off for Paris in the years between 1830 and 1900, ambitious to excel in their work.

The Long Shadow Book CoverThe Long Shadow: The Great War and the 20th Century by David Reynolds. In his book, the author, an historian and Fellow of Christ’s College Cambridge, assesses the impact of the First World War that challenges its iconic status as a world of gloomy trenches, anti-war poets and wasted lives. Reynolds argues that the First
World War produced a fundamental departure in world history which ultimately resulted in another world war, and in consequences the world is still experiencing. Reviewed by Robert McFarland, Emeritus Senior Administrator, State University of New York at Albany, and a former history teacher.

Orange is the New BlackJoin us for a discussion of the memoir Orange is the New Black: My Year in a Women's Prison by Piper Kerman

With a career, a boyfriend, and a loving family, Piper Kerman barely resembles the reckless young woman who delivered a suitcase of drug money ten years before. But that past has caught up with her. Convicted and sentenced to fifteen months at the infamous federal correctional facility in Danbury, Connecticut, the well-heeled Smith College alumna is now inmate #11187–424—one of the millions of people who disappear “down the rabbit hole” of the American penal system. From her first strip search to her final release, Kerman learns to navigate this strange world with its strictly enforced codes of behavior and arbitrary rules.

A Feathered River Across the Sky book coverA Feathered River Across the Sky: The Passenger Pigeon’s Flight to Extinction by Joel Greenberg. The last passenger pigeon, Martha, died 100 years ago in captivity at the Cincinnati Zoo. Although a billion pigeons crossed the skies near Toronto in May of 1860, little more than 50 years later they were extinct. Greenberg, a naturalist and research associate of the Field Museum, tells a cautionary tale of what happened to this epic bird. He is instrumental in Project Passenger Pigeon, which focuses attention on human-caused extinctions. Reviewed by Patricia Rush, past president of ECOS: the Environmental Clearinghouse
