Patchett’s most autobiographical novel, this is a funny, chilling, entrancing, and profoundly affecting look into one family’s “commonwealth,” its shared affinities, conflicts, loss, and love.  Spanning five decades, the book explores how a chance encounter at a baby's christening reverberates through the lives of four parents and six children.  When a legendary author uses the children's experiences as the basis for a successful novel, they are forced to come to terms with the deeply loyal connection they feel for one another.

This program series is made possible by the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Andrew Cuomo and the New York State Legislature. Sponsored by the Mohawk Valley Library System and participating member libraries.

Leslie Neustadt will offer an ekphrastic writing workshop in conjunction with her art show at the Niskayuna Branch Library.  Ekphrastic writing references visual artwork as an inspiration for vivid imagistic writing. There are many ways to write about visual art. We will read several poems inspired by visual art and explore the fertile interface between visual art and "painting" with words. In addition to Leslie's art show, participants will have a range of artwork to write from. After a period of writing and reflection, we will share what we have written.

What is the Story you long to tell?   This three-session course will help you find that story by working through your Writer's Blind Spot.

Along the journey there will be written and improvisational exercises to help you use Dialogue for exploring Character, Conflict and Plot.  Overall you will produce short Monologues and Scenes which will come together in a Short-Short (a One-Act Play of 10 pages or less). Each session will end with a chance to share what you have written.

Open to novice and seasoned writers ages 18+.

Sandi Dollinger is a theatre/artist who has taught playwriting as far abroad as Warsaw, Poland. She currently teaches Presentation and Performance at the College of St. Rose.
A month ago her play, "Make Bread Not War," enjoyed a reading in Chicago at Voices for Creative Non-Violence.   Her new play, "Under the Aguacate Tree," about an undocumented immigrant, has been chosen for production at The Players’ Ring in Portsmouth, New Hampshire.

Space is limited. You must attend all three sessions.
