Training Description
This is a 2 1/2-hour class for state employees and librarians designed to familiarize users with the legislative research websites, including scstatehouse.gov, and Thomas.gov. Attendees will see how to view bills that are submitted to the General Assembly, track actions and versions; find contact information for legislators and committees; find budgets, laws and regulations; and find publications sent to the General Assembly and stored at the website. For the federal government we will find legislator pages, find acts, public laws, and use the Federal Register and Congressional Record.

Description
Are you a fan of C-SPAN, Washington Journal, or BookTV? Would you like to learn more about the network’s philosophy and get an overview of C-SPAN’s organization and programs? If so, this free workshop is for you.

On February 26, from 10:30 AM to noon, Rodee Schneider of C-SPAN will conduct a special workshop for C-SPAN fans, media specialists, social studies teachers, students, state government employees, librarians, and anyone else looking to gain a greater knowledge of C-SPAN and its public affairs resources. The workshop will be held in Room 309 of the South Carolina State Library’s administration building at 1430 Senate Street.

Following the talk, there will be a walk-through of C-SPAN’s unique and free resources, including

• the Video Library, C-SPAN's comprehensive searchable archive featuring every C-SPAN program since 1987,
• Health Care Hub, a site featuring resources on the ongoing health care debate,
• C-SPAN Classroom, an educational service for social studies teachers, and
• Congressional Chronicle, a tool for monitoring and tracking congressional bills and members.

Seating is limited to 55 participants so be sure to register online before all seats are taken! Even though this event is free, we are expecting a large crowd so we ask that you register online. The registration deadline is Friday, February 19 at 5:00 PM.

During the current challenging economic situation, DISCUS resources are more valuable than ever. Is your institution fully maximizing its use of the DISCUS collection? Public and academic libraries can customize and manage these resources in a variety of ways to better integrate them into their collections and services. Attend this important session to get more value from the databases provided to your library by DISCUS.

For overall DISCUS collection administration at the local institution, participants will review:
  • Linking and branding instructions;
  • Support resources available in the Toolkit; and
  • Recent additions in content and functionality.

  • For all the databases in the DISCUS collection, participants will learn how to:
  • retrieve usage statistics and identify report options; and
  • utilize customization options.

  • For the databases provided by Gale, participants will also learn how to:
  • identify their library ID and location ID for retrieving usage statistics;
  • examine ways to customize the enhanced PowerSearch interface for more effective use; and
  • recognize methods of linking to both their library's periodical holdings information and to InfoTrac journals from their OPACs.

  • Academic and public libraries are STRONGLY ENCOURAGED to send representative(s) to this training, particularly individuals who serve in the roles of DISCUS Primary Contact and DISCUS Technical Contact.

    The South Carolina State Library welcomes PLA Trainer and Early Literacy specialist Susan Bard to present a course on EveryDay Literacy: helping to incorporate literacy activities into daily routines. Susan will conduct a follow up review on Every Child Ready to Read, the six skills and how to support them. She will also emphasize the connection between arts and literacy and how to communicate to parents and caregivers about the ECRR skills. Attendees will be able to see the connections between the Every Child Ready to Read program and the Mother Goose on the Loose program, and Susan will also introduce the South Carolina Day by Day Family Literacy Activity Calendar as a tool to promote literacy to families, caregivers and educators.

    The role of libraries in emergency preparedness planning, response, and recovery is often overlooked by first responders.

    This meeting will be a community forum for public library leaders and local emergency management personnel.

    Participants will learn about best practices in other states and participate in dialogue between library leaders and first responders about th epotential role of libraries in disaster response.

    Speakers invited include: Rebecca Hamilton, State Librarian of Louisiana; Joe Ryan, Project Manager Hurricane/Disaster Preparedness and Response by Utilizing Florida Public Libraries Project; Sam Hodge, Georgetown County SC Emergency Manager and Dwight McInvaill, Georgetown County Library Director.

    The forum is sponsored by the South Carolina Emergency Management Division, the South Carolina State Library, Richland County Public Library and the University of South Carolina School of Medicine Library and it is funded by the National Network of Libraries of Medicine Southeastern Atlantic Region.

    Description
    Susanna Ashton, author of I Belong to South Carolina: South Carolina Slave Narratives--Rare firsthand accounts of slavery from across the Palmetto State collected together for the first time.

    Books will be available for purchase and autographing. The South Carolina Center for the Book is the South Carolina Affiliate of the Library of Congress Center for the Book and is a cooperative project of the South Carolina State Library, the University of South Carolina School of Library and Information Science, and The Humanities Council SC.

    For
