This lecture examines the aging process through comedy routines of Robert Klein, Rita Rudner, Phyllis Diller, Myron Cohen, Jerry Seinfeld and others. You will also hear humorous songs by Pete Seeger, Tom Lehrer, Pam Peterson and quotes, jokes and cartoons dealing with growing old. As author Michael Pritchard remarked: “You don’t stop laughing when you grow old. You grow old when you stop laughing.” Registration begins Friday, March 10th at the Reference Desk.

Join librarian Eric Wasserman for a lively discussion of this year’s Long Island Reads book selection “Dead Wake” from critically acclaimed and best-selling author Erik Larson who grew up in Freeport, N.Y. On May 1, 1915, with World War I entering its tenth month, a luxury ocean liner as richly appointed as an English country house sailed out of New York, bound for Liverpool, carrying a record number of children and infants. This is the true story of the submarine attack on the Lusitania, the lives and deaths of some of its passengers, and the sinking of the largest and fastest ocean liner of its time. Dr. Regina T. Gilbert will discuss one of the greatest mysteries of all time. How were the pyramids built? The recent discovery of 4,500-year-old papyrus diary written by a foreman who helped build the Great Pyramids of Giza has given archeologists new insight into the building of the only remaining Wonder of the Ancient World - presented in cooperation with the SEAFORD KIWANIS CLUB. Lyndhurst is a Gothic Revival Mansion located on a park like landscape overlooking the Hudson River.  Sunnyside, the much loved riverside home and garden of Washington Irving, has been charming visitors for generations.  We will have guided tours of both Lyndhurst and Sunnyside.  Afterwards, we will have lunch at The Half Moon Restaurant on the Hudson River waterfront. This informative and exciting presentation follows on the enormously popular “Long Island Shipwrecks” program by exploring a number of different shipwrecks from all eras in Long Island History. In this program, we will discuss the history of shipwrecks from the Revolutionary War through modern times and show the viewer what some of these wrecks look like today underwater. A discussion that highlights some of the marine life that inhabits these artificial reefs is included - brought to you in partnership with the SEAFORD HISTORICAL SOCIETY.
