PART 2: You already know how to do your job, that’s probably what got you promoted. But being a manager or supervisor demands new skills. Now you’re in charge of coordinating people and tasks and your success depends on your ability to get things done through others. This workshop will provide you with the practical tips, techniques and solutions you now need for supervisory success.     When was the last time your library evaluated its Acceptable Use Policy? The Internet has gone through major changes since libraries were first adopting their policies and it may be time to reevaluate some of the points in your policy and the use of filters on your workstations. In this roundtable participants can share how they manage Internet access in their libraries and discuss what has worked and what may need changing. Facilitated by Kathy Lussier, SEMLS Assistant Administrator for Technology.

    Contact: semls   877-923-3531   semls@semls.org
Why should libraries care about Facebook? With more than 200 million active users on the site, more than 100 million of which log into their Facebook account at least once a day, Facebook offers a great way for libraries to get the word out to their existing and potential users and have conversations with them. In this class participants will create a Facebook page for their library and learn how to add applications to the page that will be most useful to their users. We will also look at pages from other libraries and discuss what features have or have not made them successful. The target audience for this class are people who already have a Facebook account and would like to create a fan page for their library or improve an existing fan page. Instructed by Kathy Lussier, SEMLS Assistant Administrator for Technology. Participants should have basic Internet proficiency before taking this class. This is a hands-on workshop limited to 16 participants and a minimum of five participants is required to hold the class. Sign up for this workshop.     [Directions to the SEMLS office]

Join us this month as we guide participants through the long-range planning process using the workbook developed for the Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners. We will look at the required components of the plan, resources to make the process easier and a way to manage the project so you can meet the deadline for future plan submission. An added incentive is that schools with plans approved by the MBLC are eligible to participate in the Library Services Technology Act (LSTA) direct grant funding program.     What do you do when Google fails? Although Google is the primary destination for most searches, there are still a number of services that can get you the answer you need and may sometimes do a better job than Google. Bing, Microsoft’s new decision engine, produces much better results than Microsoft’s previous attempts at search. WolframAlpha is a service that answers questions and calculations. Twitter Search can give you insights you won’t find through other search tools. In this class we will explore new search tools than can help us get information for our users. Presented by Kathy Lussier, SEMLS Assistant Administrator for Technology. Participants should have basic Internet proficiency before taking this class. This is a hands-on workshop limited to 16 participants and a minimum of five participants is required to hold the class. Sign up for this workshop.     [Directions to the SEMLS office]

Participate in a discussion of the cream of this year’s crop of picture books and sharpen your evaluation skills in the process. Use the voting procedure of the real Caldecott committee to come up with a SEMLS winner for the most distinguished picture book published in the U.S. by an American resident or citizen during 2009. Try to read some of the books in advance, although time will be allotted for examining the books at the meeting. The real Caldecott winners will be announced on Tuesday, January 19, 2010 at the American Library Association Midwinter Conference in Boston. Check out the ALA Web site at http://www.ala.org/alsc under “Breaking News” around 1:00 p.m. Presenter Melody Allen is a former library program specialist at the Rhode Island Office of Library and Information Services. More people than ever are using mobile devices to access the Internet and communicate. There is now a growing expectation that business, government and libraries meet the needs of these mobile users. Join us for a full-day technology conference where we will highlight developments in mobility and discuss ways libraries are meeting the needs of mobile users.

Tom Peters of TAP Information Services will deliver the keynote address, "Mobile Libraries: The Future of Libraries and of Our Sense of Place." Joe Murphy, Coordinator of Instruction & Technology at the Yale University Science Libraries, will provide an overview of ways libraries can reach out to mobile users in "Mobile Tech, Mobile Users, Mobile Libraries." Jill Erickson of the Falmouth Public Library will give an update on the early months of Falmouth's "Text-a-Librarian" service. SEMLS Assistant Administrator for Technology Kathy Lussier will explore e-Book options for libraries. The day will end with small group discussion as participants brainstorm ways to incorporate mobile technologies into library service

Participants will also have an opportunity to try various gadgets from the SEMLS Technology Sandbox during the breaks. In addition to the Amazon Kindle 2, SEMLS plans to have a Sony Reader and Nook by January 14.

Participants should bring a brown bag lunch. SEMLS will provide drinks.
