The Web is no longer a place one goes to simply find information. It’s now a space for creating and mixing up content, interacting with others and building communities. That’s what Web 2.0 is all about. In this seven-week, online course, we will explore interactive tools, social communities and applications commonly used by many library patrons and students. Participants will create their own blog, explore and/or upload photos to Flickr, use Twitter, participate in a wiki, subscribe to RSS feeds and create a Facebook account. The class will include weekly interactions with other participants to discuss how libraries can use these tools to connect with patrons and students. With the exception of two scheduled chats, participants will be able to log in at any time to complete the work and participate in discussion. Participants will be expected to spend about three to five hours each week on the class. The class will last for seven weeks (we will be taking the week of February 15 off.) Participants will need to access the class on a computer that is able to connect to social networking sites like WordPress and Facebook (some filters may block these sites.) Instructed by Beth Gallaway, independent library trainer/consultant specializing in gaming, technology and youth services and she is a YALSA certified Serving the
Underserved (SUS) trainer. Participants should have basic Internet proficiency before taking this class.

Planning for Local History Collections

Local history collections are valued by libraries and patrons but what about other materials that we inherit such as old diaries, letters, photographs, scrapbooks and newspaper clippings? What can you do to care for and provide access to these materials with limited staff, space and budget? This workshop will review some of the strategies that you could use to provide the best possible solution for your collections within your means. Topics discussed will be the role of the local history collection, why we collect archives, what an archivist is and when to hire a consultant, how to prepare to write a grant or advocate for funding for the local history collection and what emergency measures can be taken in the short term. This is not a workshop on how to process archival materials but rather an overview to help you determine how you should manage them. Presented by Judy Farrar, Archives and Special Collections Librarian at the Claire T. Carney Library at the University of MA, Dartmouth. With her husband and partner, under the name History Preserved, she has consulted with many local libraries on archival matters.

Blogs, wikis, slideshows and videos can be overwhelming to keep organized. Additionally, the use of Facebook or Twitter can raise security concerns. The “Create-Your-Own Network” by NING is a great tool for collecting everything in one place by exposing students to the Internet while providing a judgment filter. See real examples of how NING is being used while reinforcing an understanding of blogs, discussions, embedding content and more. Instructed by Kevin Murphy, Information Technology Teacher, Frontier Regional School. Participants should have basic Internet proficiency before taking this class. This is a hands-on workshop limited to 16 participants and a minimum of five participants is required to hold the class.

Volunteers can improve your library in many ways. They willingly do repetitive work freeing your staff to address more complicated tasks, and because they are key stakeholders in your library, they serve as good-will ambassadors in the community. The time spent recruiting, training, involving and retaining volunteers can be a great benefit to the library. We’ll talk about best practices and some of the many ways volunteers are currently being used in member libraries. Instructed by Cheryl Bryan, SEMLS Assistant Administrator for Consulting and Continuing Education.

Picasa makes editing easy by previewing changes in real time and by providing for multiple levels of undo to revert to the original image. IrfanView is a simple image viewer and editor that supports all major graphic formats and allows you to modify color depth, crop and sharpen images. JPegger provides standard image management functions as well as the ability to create autorun CD’s for an easy way to distribute pictures. Presented by Barbara Andrews of Andrews Consulting. Participants should have basic Windows proficiency before taking this class. This is a hands-on workshop limited to 16 participants and a minimum of five participants is required to hold the class.

Are you looking for a way to deliver library programming online for those users who cannot make it to your building? Podcasting is one way to reach out to patrons at home. With a podcast, your library can record library events, book reviews, poetry slams and talks and easily make them available on the Web. SEMLS now has recorders available for loan to libraries to help them create their own podcasts. In this class participants will create a podcast by recording the audio file, editing the recording, uploading it to a server and syndicating the show. Instructed by Beth Gallaway, independent library trainer/consultant specializing in gaming,
technology and youth services and she is a YALSA certified Serving the Underserved (SUS) trainer. Participants should have basic Internet proficiency before taking this class. This is a hands-on workshop limited to 16 participants and a minimum of five participants is required to hold the class.
