Now you’re in charge of coordinating people and tasks and your success depends on your ability to get things done through others. This workshop will provide you with the practical tips, techniques and solutions you now need for supervisory success. We’ll focus on effectively communicating your expectations of what needs to get done, organize resources for changing priorities, carry out essential supervisory responsibilities and function as a true leader who commands the respect, commitment and credibility that motivates people into action. When was the last time your library evaluated its Acceptable Use Policy? The Internet has gone through major changes since libraries were first adopting their policies and it may be time to reevaluate some of the points in your policy and the use of filters on your workstations. In this roundtable participants can share how they manage Internet access in their libraries and discuss what has worked and what may need changing. Facilitated by Kathy Lussier, SEMLS Assistant Administrator for Technology.

Why should libraries care about Facebook? With more than 200 million active users on the site, more than 100 million of which log into their Facebook account at least once a day, Facebook offers a great way for libraries to get the word out to their existing and potential users and have conversations with them. In this class participants will create a Facebook page for their library and learn how to add applications to the page that will be most useful to their users. We will also look at pages from other libraries and discuss what features have or have not made them successful. The target audience for this class are people who already have a Facebook account and would like to create a fan page for their library or improve an existing fan page. Instructed by Kathy Lussier, SEMLS Assistant Administrator for Technology. Participants should have basic Internet proficiency before taking this class. This is a hands-on workshop limited to 16 participants and a minimum of five participants is required to hold the class.

Join us this month as we guide participants through the long-range planning process using the workbook developed for the Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners. We will look at the required components of the plan, resources to make the process easier and a way to manage the project so you can meet the deadline for future plan submission. An added incentive is that schools with plans approved by the MBLC are eligible to participate in the Library Services Technology Act (LSTA) direct grant funding program. Instructed by Vickie Beene-Beavers, SEMLS Assistant Administrator for Youth Services.

What do you do when Google fails? Although Google is the primary destination for most searches, there are still a number of services that can get you the answer you need and may sometimes do a better job than Google. Bing, Microsoft’s new decision engine, produces much better results than Microsoft’s previous attempts at search. WolframAlpha is a service that answers questions and calculations. Twitter Search can give you insights you won’t find through other search tools. In this class we will explore new search tools than can help us get information for our users. Presented by Kathy Lussier, SEMLS Assistant Administrator for Technology. Participants should have basic Internet proficiency before taking this class. This is a hands-on workshop limited to 16 participants and a minimum of five participants is required to hold the class.
