Join us for the Winter Session of Foodie & the Feast!Wintersweet Book Cover

Don't let  winter doldrums get you down.  Look forward to baking up delicious seasonal treats and sharing good conversation!

This month's featured title, Wintersweet: seasonal desserts to warm the home, celebrates the foods of the season - highlighting dishes made with citrus, pomegranate, nuts, etc.
The Library will be serving: Cranberry Torte

How the cookbook club works:

  • Checkout the selected cookbook for the month, Wintersweet : seasonal desserts to warm the home by Tammy Donroe Inman
  • Pick a recipe (something that appeals to you, or something you've always wanted to try making)
  • Make that recipe and bring it to the cookbook club meeting
  • Taste everyone's recipes and discuss anything and everything about the preparation process/finished product!

You can place a request on the cookbook to take-home or browse the copy available at the Reference Desk.

Please register.

All cities possess environmental stories, but there is no city that surpasses Pittsburgh in terms of the scope of how its air, land and water history has influenced and shaped its society and economy. From an environmental perspective, we will discuss the manner in which the physical and economic growth of Pittsburgh impacted the natural environment. Pittsburgh and its site went through various stages of development after its colonial beginning, providing THE major commercial and transshipment center for travelers moving west into the Ohio Valley; furnishing important natural resources, especially related to energy; becoming one of the nation’s premier industrial centers.

Edward F. Schroth is best-known as a teacher of biology, water ecology and environmental science at Quaker Valley High School, and later at Duquesne University.
At Quaker Valley, he started the "Up the Creek Gang," a project where students studied the ecology of Little Sewickley Creek and its watershed. He later teamed with the China Association for Science and Technology to take high school students in to Beijing and Qingdao China for environmental studies three times. This China partnership continued when he took Duquesne University science majors on four more trips.
Through his passion for environmental education and his unique teaching style, students received firsthand experience at data collection and measurements. As a leader in service learning at Duquesne University, he has set the standard for student-community engagement with such organizations as the Allegheny Land Trust, the Little Sewickley Creek Watershed, The Ballpark Urban Farm, and others.

In May, 2016 he was honored with the Western Pennsylvania Environmental Award.  The award is presented for leadership, effectiveness, and for results in making an impact on the environment.
