The books at the Sharon Public Library are in a constant state of use. Because many of our books get so much love, after a while they become too damaged to read. However, rather than dispose of these books, we'd rather upcycle them! Join us for a crafting event each month, as we experiment with different ways to find new uses for old books.

This program is open to everyone. However, there will be sharp objects and/or hot glue at some of the events, so parental supervision is required.

Ted Reinstein is a longtime, award-winning reporter for “Chronicle,” Boston’s celebrated—and the nation’s longest-running—nightly TV newsmagazine. In June, 2013, Globe Pequot Press released his first book, a collection of Ted’s most memorable and favorite stories drawn from over fifteen years of reporting from every corner of New England. His talk itself runs approx. 50-minutes and covers, as Ted puts it, “the best of the best—my all-time most favorite people and places in New England.” The talk is highlighted with photos, many the work of some of the region’s most talented and successful photographers, and all featured in the book. Following the talk, Ted takes questions from the audience. At the conclusion of the Q&A session, Ted’s books are on sale, and he is happy to personally sign copies.

This event is a monthly event that will showcase local artist and talent from the community.  It will serve as a place for artist and creative people of all ages to network and gather freely, and socially, while expressing and performing.  I am a local artist and poet who wants to see this event grow into not only a poetry nite seires but an opportunity for those with talent to practice for their future success.  Each event gives tribute to an artist or something in history, this months will give tribute to Spiral.  Spiral is a collection of artist that formed a group in 1963 in response to the March on Washington for jobs and freedom.  Seeking artist and educators to be present with more information.

Poetry recitations by Rev. Dr. Gordon Postill provide a kind of “excursion” format to ponder and discuss such themes as adventure, hope, death, friendship, and grief.  After each recitation (poems will be recited twice for increased exposure), there will be an opportunity for personal and group reflections about what the poems may have evoked. The recitations include poems by William Shakespeare, Mary Oliver, W.H. Auden, Jane Kenyon, and other renowned poets.  A complete list of the poems will be provided at the end of this 90-minute introspective, yet also interactive, process.

The content and format have been specifically designed for both poetry lovers in general as well as for anyone else who appreciates exploring core aspects of the human condition.

Ordained by The United Church of Canada in 1980, Dr. Postill is a Board Certified Chaplain who has provided spiritual care to hospice patients and their families since 1991.  He has been the Chaplain of Old Colony Hospice in Randolph for the past twelve years and lives with his wife Robin in Duxbury.

The workshops offer participants interesting and entertaining historical information about the artists’ lives and painting techniques, a demo at easel, and participants’ own hands-on experience with pastels (all professional-grade materials supplied). All take home their own pastel paintings.

Based on Jeff Belanger's popular book of the same name, take a multimedia journey through the history, oddities, paranormal, and just plain weird side of the Bay State.

Massachusetts and weird: not too much of a stretch, some would say. But we dug a little deeper and found all kinds of local legends, bizarre beasts, surprising cemeteries, and uncovered the best kept secrets from all over the Bay State. Our state certainly celebrates more than just tea parties, the Red Sox and Patriots; folks from Massachusetts cherish their weird history too. Our brave and valiant author, Jeff Belanger, toured the state with camera and notepad in hand as he waded through cranberry bogs and trudged up the Berkshires to uncover the state’s odd and offbeat.

If it’s unusual or unexplainable or fantastic, and in the Bay State, you’ll find it all here in Weird Massachusetts. See how the world’s biggest elephant now fits into a peanut butter jar and why it brings good luck to students, listen for those unexplained booms in Nashoba, discover the hidden secrets at Wizard’s Glen and Altar Rock, escape from the Sea Witch and the Cape Cod Mermaid, check out the Museum of Burnt Food, or eat an apple from one of Isaac Newton’s famous apple trees -- but whatever you do, don’t pick up a red-headed hitchhiker on Route 44.

This program is supported in part by a grant from the Sharon Cultural Council, a local agency which is supported by the Massachusetts Cultural Council, a state agency.
