Contact: Donna Bryant, Public Services Librarian   508 653 0770   referencelibrarian@comcast.net

Don't miss this visit by Henry David Thoreau, portrayed by historian Richard Smith.  Smith will read from the essay "Walking; or, The Wild.”  Originally a lecture first delivered at the Concord Lyceum on April 23, 1851, it was written and continually revised in essay form between 1851 and 1860, to be published in the Atlantic Monthly after his death. Thoreau considered it one of his seminal works, writing "I regard this as a sort of introduction to all that I may write hereafter."  The Library will provide multiple copies of this essay.

This program includes a lively discussion about Thoreau’s life and writings (while Smith is in character) and an audience Q& A.   Richard Smith has studied the life of Thoreau for 18 years and has successfully performed this character throughout New England and the country.  This event is open to all and will especially appeal to anyone with an interest local history, nature or philosophy.  Contact Public Services Librarian Donna Bryant at 508.653.0770 or email referencelibrarian@comcast.net for additional information about this or other Library events.

Co-Sponsored by the Sherborn Community Center Foundation, the Sherborn Historical Society, Sherborn Forest and Trails Association and the Sherborn Garden Club.
