Ghosts and Gravestones Trolley Tour - Reserve Tickets Online
Riders must meet at the Shrewsbury Public Library this Saturday, May 25th, no later than 5PM (suggested arrivial time is 4:45PM)
This event was originally scheduled during April vacation week.  Due to the tragic events in Boston, the tour – which was completely sold out - had to be postponed.  A small group of tickets opened up when the new date was scheduled, so we’re sending out a final call for those that would like to attend and may have been turned away originally.
 Here are the details you need to know:
 
·  Depending on your age, tickets for this tour normally cost between $25 and $40 per person.  Thanks to grant funds from the Friends of the Shrewsbury Public Library and the National Endowment for Arts, the Institute of Museum & Library Services and Arts Midwest, we were able to get the ticket price down to a very low $8!  That includes transportation into the city of Boston to take the tour as well!  It's a great bargain.  For more information on the tour riders will be taking, go here (this is not where you reserve the tickets):   http://www.ghostsandgravestones.com/boston/gravestones-ghost-tour.htm
·  The event will be chaperoned by Shrewsbury Public Library staff.  This event is for this Big Read group only - other tourists in Boston will not be on the bus - we're the VIPs! 
·  The tour is rated a soft PG-13 according to a rep from the tour company - there are themes of death and murder which may be too intense for some.
·  There are only 10 spots left of the 55 spots - once they are sold out, we cannot add more.
·  The cost, $8, must be paid in upon departure this Saturday at 5PM.  Please bring exact change.  Thank you!
·  Bus will depart from the SPL promptly at 5PM on the day of the event and return around 9:30PM/10PM.   There are no refunds for tickets, even if you miss the bus, so please be on time or early to get a good seat!  We will be showing the movie Tom & Huck (rated PG) on the bus.
·  You may bring a bagged supper/snacks – the bus will not be stopping for food.

    Preschool Sensory Integration* Drop In Morning

Swing by for fun sensory stations known to stimulate both occupational and speech learning in preschool aged children. We will be marble painting, squishing shaving cream, searching for treasures in rice and beans, fishing from our rocking board dock and crawling through tunnels!   While playing, we will be working on articulation and vocabulary without the children even realizing how hard they are working. 
This drop in session is being staffed by pediatric occupational and speech therapists (as well as graduate students studying to become therapists) from Northborough’s Barrett Family Wellness Center (www.barrettfamilywellness.com) who’s mission of treating children extends into educating families, and the communities, to home programs and things that can be done each day to help children grow to their best potential.

*Sensory Integration, in simplest terms, is our body’s ability to take in and process sensory information (smells, sights, sounds, etc.) and produce an appropriate response to the information received.

    5th grade (as of fall of 2013) through 12th grade students who wish to apply for a summer volunteer spot MUST attend one two hour training held this week, and one two hour training held next week.  A test will be given to all potential volunteers and those that pass will be able to join our team.  Last year 138 students were on the team!  This will be the only opportunity to volunteer this summer at the Shrewsbury Public Library.  

Further details:
  • Students MUST be on time.  Plan accordingly.  Students that show up late will not be allowed to join in.  This has been a real problem in the past, and I will not allow it anymore.  
  • Students MUST stay for the entire training period.  If this time doesn't work out, we are holding three session 1's this week.
  • Students MUST be willing to commit to at least two hours per week this summer (obviously if sickness/vacation arises, that is fine)

    So you've always wanted to "do" your family genealogy, but where do you start?  Come to the Library, and learn how to kick-start your family history project.  You'll be introduced to basic sources and Internet websites; you'll learn what to look for as well as what to avoid; you'll be given handouts and printed forms to get you started as soon as you walk out the door!  Assistant Library Director George C. Brown (who also heads Adult Services at the Library) has been working on his own family history for over 15 years; he'll share insights he has gained and stories that are sure to get you energized for the project.  Registration opens May 11th--please register online or call George at 508-841-8531.

The library is excited to introduce this new club for computer programmers and developers of all experience levels to gather, collaborate and learn from each other. Teens and adults welcome. We will share any current projects we are working on, and plan future workshops on specific topics. The club’s leaders will also share valuable resources for those starting out. HTML, CSS, PHP, Java, JS, JQuery, Python, whether you know it or want to know it, come on by! Bring a laptop or check out one of the four that the library owns.

Join us for singing, dancing and FUN! For ages 2 - 5. Due to the popularity of this program, there will be a lottery. Preference will be given to Shrewsbury residents.  Non-Shrewsbury residents will be admitted as space allows.  Please choose a date for the program you will be attending.  Online registration will be open 2 weeks prior to the date of each program. The lottery drawing for the first session will be June 20 and participants who have been selected will be notified by 5 PM on the Friday before the program.

    Introduction to Middle Eastern Music and Dance. Presented by Edward J Hines, this participatory workshop is a fun and fascinating introduction to the cultures of the Middle East.  It features demonstrations of folk & classical instruments (strings, winds & percussion) from both Turkey and the Arab world.  Learn about the unique modes and scales of the region (maqamat) and hear comparisons of Eastern and Western musical styles. But the highlight of the workshop is when everyone joins in learning easy Middle Eastern folk dances.  Learn something new and have a lot of fun!

Preference will be given to Shrewsbury residents.  Non-Shrewsbury residents will be admitted as space allows.  Please choose a date for the program you will be attending.  Online registration will be open 2 weeks prior to the date of each program. The lottery drawing for the first session will be June 20 and participants who have been selected will be notified by 5 PM on the Friday before the program.

    Author Michael Tougias will speak about his latest book, "A Storm Too Soon: A True Story of Survival and a Remarkable Rescue."  The book tells the calamitous story of a 2007 daring U.S. Coast Guard rescue of three survivors on a raft some 250 miles out to sea in the Gulf Stream.  The author will have copies of his book available for sale.  This event is funded by the Friends of the Shrewsbury Public Library.  Open to all interested.
