A direct descendant of the Peace Dale branch of the Hazard family, Martha Oliver-Smith was born in Peace Dale, Rhode Island in 1946. She is the granddaughter of Martha Stringham Bacon (the subject of the book), and poet Leonard Bacon (1887-1954). She spent most of her childhood moving between her grandmother’s home in Peace Dale and living with her mother in New York. She completed a BA in English from Southern Oregon University, and an MA in English literature from the University of Nevada where she began her teaching career. After twenty-five years, Oliver-Smith moved east and began to research and write Martha’s Mandala. In 2006, she earned an MFA in creative writing from Vermont College of Fine Arts. She lives in Vermont and is working on a second memoir.

The event is free and open to the public. For more information, contact Jessica Wilson, 789-1555 xt 110.
