    Contact: Jessica Wilson   789-1555 xt 110   jwilson@skpl.org

Join us at Peace Dale Library with local author Stewart Cohen, for "Antietam: Bloodiest Day in American History," on Wednesday, September 16, 4 PM,

Cohen's novels explore African American participation in the Civil War.  This story focuses on a spy at Antietam by the name of John Scobell, who contributed to the Federal effort at that pivotal time.

Scobell’s story remained largely hidden for decades. The book depicts what is known of his life, supplemented by created tales of his role as spy. It is the first of five books placing John Scobell at Antietam, Fredericksburg, Gettysburg and Petersburg.

Stewart Cohen, PhD., taught Human Development and Family Studies at URI for 36 years. His special interest in Civil War battles helped him understand crucial contributions of African Americans to the war effort that were often only footnoted or barely acknowledged by historians. His novels highlight the participation of those Black Americans and how their varied roles led to greater freedom for all people.

The event is free and open to the public.
