    Contact: Jessica Wilson   401-789-1555 ext.110   jwilson@skpl.org

Join us at Peace Dale Library with  Prof. Karl Aspelund of URI's Department of Textiles, Fashion Merchandising and Design, for "Designing Clothing for Interstellar Space Travel", Tuesday, May 19, 6:30 PM.

Sooner than we think, humans will establish permanent communities on starships, space stations, and other planets and moons in our solar system. Karl Aspelund is working to design the best possible clothing for interstellar pioneers, and he's doing it in our own back yard at URI. Hear about what goes into outfitting long-term space voyagers, and how new developments could dramatically change what we wear here on earth.

In addition to apparel for long-term space exploration, Karl Aspelund 's research focuses on the role of textiles in creating identity; environmental impacts of the textile life-cycle; and sustainability. He worked for 20 years in theater and film design, and was head of Industrial Design at Iceland's Reykjavik Technical College. He is a member of the 100 Year Starship research team. An award-winning writer and dynamic speaker, Aspelund is the author of 3 books on design and holds a Ph.D. in Anthropology and Material Culture from Boston University.

We are trying a new kind of book group at Peace Dale Library! Join us for Readers’ Roundtable on the last Wednesday of the month at 2 PM.

Rather than all reading the same book, we hope everyone’s reading something different! Bring copies, or a list, of up to 4 titles you’ve read or listened to recently. Tell us in 3 minutes or less (each) what you liked (or not) about them, and why you would recommend them (or not). We’re hoping to hear about lots of great books this way, and hope you will join us!

Free and open to all readers. Refreshments provided by Friends of the Peace Dale Library.
