A Talk by Keri Mandell, ultra marathoner, Ironman, Crossfit coach and yoga instructor/studio owner

As a former special education teacher, learning consultant, & school administrator, Keri has stepped out of a traditional school and immersed herself into the school of fitness. Now ultra marathoner, Ironman, CrossFit coach, yoga instructor and yoga studio owner (www.empoweryoganj.com); Keri has spent her career caring for and teaching others, showing people that anything is possible.

Keri wakes each day with the mantra, "it’s a great day to be alive" and works hard to live up to that mantra by doing things that challenge her and enjoying every aspect of life.  She tries to not take anything for granted and appreciates the small gifts in life. Keri has a positive attitude, will, and desire to live a good, strong, healthy, and kind life.  She believes that it is important to be grateful for the things we have, tell the people in our lives that we care about them, and do something each day that will challenge us (maybe even scare us a little).

Keri is one of 166 people (60 women) in the world to complete the World Marathon Challenge (7 marathons on 7 continents in 7 days)! She entered this race as a way to challenge herself both physically and mentally, but also to raise money and awareness for the American Cancer Society. Keri recently lost her dad, Arthur Roedel & stepmom, Debbie Roedel, long time residents and business owners of South Brunswick, to cancer. Keri ran to honor them and help those fighting for their lives.

Join us on May 4th to hear her story- how she got into fitness, her career, how she completed this epic event and how to start carving your path to live your best life!

Image result for Archaeology great courses lecturesThis month, we are continuing to show the lecture series "Archaeology: An Introduction to the World's Greatest Sites" series produced by National Geographic and Great Courses.  We will be showing all 24 episodes (two per month) finishing the series in February 2021.

Today's we will show:

Episode 5: How Do Archaeologists Know Where to Dig?

This lecture uncovers the methodology archaeologists use in looking for sites. Get acquainted with the uses of remote sensing technologies, such as LiDAR and ground penetrating radar, which enable archaeologists to visualize objects obscured by vegetation and soil. Then investigate ground surveys-reconnaissance done by carefully walking potential sites-which reveal vital information before digging.

Episode 6: Prehistoric Archaeology

Prehistoric archaeology allows us to glimpse the earliest times in hominid and human history. Learn about seminal 20th-century finds of hominids in Africa, which provided clues to the origins of our ancestors from millions of years ago. Then discover the astounding figural cave paintings of Lascaux, Altamira, and Chauvet.

Average episode 30 minutes; showing two episodes each month on the first wednesday at 12:30 unless otherwise noted in this calendar.  The Friends of the South Brunswick Public Library have purchased the 12-month Site License to be able to show the whole course in the coming year.

misc_none.png 7:00 PM  -  8:30 PM Write Your Memoir Five Minutes at a Time - Imagine Your Story Adult Workshop Remind Me about this Event Download Event Info Tell a Friend

Image result for journal writingUnlike autobiography, memoir is based on the idea that everyone has a story to tell, a story that matters. Writing memoir asks that one awaken and be guided by empathy towards oneself and others. In this way, memoir prompts a journey of self-discovery that enables writers to gain insights into their past. Through lessons in the craft of memoir, the exploration of editorial revisions, and invaluable writing suggestions, participants learn how to develop a writing practice and continue their writing life beyond the session.

Bring your lap top or your favorite writing instrument and learn how to start or continue writing the story of you!  Following the summer reading theme: "Imagine Your Story," we are offering a workshop that will help you do just that. Dr. Edvige Giunta, Ph.D., Professor of English at New Jersey City University, from a grant awarded by the New Jersey Council for the Humanities Public Scholars Project, will lead a workshop on the art of memoir writing.  The Friends of the Library funded the application fee for this grant.

Edvige Giunta
About the speaker: Edvige Giunta has taught memoir workshops since 1997, guiding many writers through the writing journey. She is Professor of English at New Jersey City University. She has published several books on Italian American literature and culture and was featured in The New York Times and RAI. Her memoir, essays, poems, translations, and flash nonfiction have been published in many anthologies and journals.

This program is for adults, new adults and interested teens.  Light refreshments will be served; participants will be provided a small journal to start their writing.  If there is interest, a creative writing group may be formed out of the program. Seating is limited.  Registration below is required.

In the first of two lectures on the wonders of Egyptology, learn about the deciphering of hieroglyphics through the legendary Rosetta Stone. Also explore the intriguing techniques of ancient Egyptian embalming and mummification, and get the stories behind the building of the Step Pyramid of Zozer, the Pyramids at Giza, and the Sphinx.
