Essential Word-Knowledge Skills

|
Essential Word-Knowledge Skills: Teach a Sight-Word Vocabulary and the Alphabetic Principle is a resource for teachers and clinicians which contains effective techniques and curricular materials to help children through the beginning steps of developing word knowledge. It is equally effective in teaching children and adults who have not mastered written-lEssential Word-Knowledge Skillsanguage skills. It has been professionally published and is being offered as part of this 2 day, 12-hour workshop. The significant ways in which Essential Word-Knowledge Skills is different from other programs are:
program “starting points” are determined by the skills students have already acquired;
vowel competence is developed as a knowledge base so that students are able to access that knowledge even if they do not yet perceive vowel all vowel sounds correctly;
the program is constructed so that students’ learning of the meanings of words is an integral part of their learning to read and spell them even at the earliest levels;
spelling is developed based on when children are expected to know the meanings of words which results in spelling competence developing closely behind the acquisition of word-reading knowledge;
fluency training, a research-supported method of improving higher level skills, is part of basic-skill learning; and
word-knowledge learning is combined with phonetic analysis, a technique by which the explicit correspondence between the spelling of a word and its sounds (its phonetic representation) is obtained.
Phonetic analysis training enables students to learn to read the way skilled readers learn, that is, through being able to apply the alphabetic principle efficiently. One of the attributes of the English language is that it has many more words than most other languages. There is no way to teach all of the words skilled readers are able to read; learners must develop the ability to apply the alphabetic principle, thus, becoming skilled readers. When teachers provide children with the phonetic analysis of words that are being learned, teachers are providing the "gift" that talented, skilled readers have.
The workshop will be held Friday evening from 4:30-8:30pm and Saturday from 8:30am-5pm. The cost is $97.50 which includes the cost of the manual. Checks or POs should be made payable to ERCSD-SPDC (no discounts.) Light Meals will be served.
