Moby-Duck

Join us for a lively discussion of the next book in our narrative non-fiction book group: Moby-Duck by Donovan Hohn.

When the writer Donovan Hohn heard of the mysterious loss of thousands of bath toys at sea, he figured he would interview a few oceanographers, talk to a few beachcombers, and read up on Arctic science and geography. But questions can be like ocean currents: wade in too far, and they carry you away. Hohn's accidental odyssey pulls him into the secretive arena of shipping conglomerates, the daring work of Arctic researchers, the lunatic risks of maverick sailors, and the shadowy world of Chinese toy factories. Moby-Duck is a journey into the heart of the sea and an adventure through science, myth, the global economy, and some of the worst weather imaginable.” -Amazon

During this 4 week workshop, children will work on individual writing projects with Judy Carlson. Judy has extensive experience with children and writing and she has led many children's reading/writing programs. The workshop will be held on the following dates: Friday, January 13, 20, February 3 and 10.  There is no class on January 27.

The magazine that is created will include a theme that the children will use to prompt their creativity. Writing will be done during the weekly Friday sessions but the program will require some time spent writing at home. In attendance at the program will be Judy's non-allergenic Labradoodle, Oliver. Oliver is a trained pet therapy dog who will be attending simply as a guest. Children respond well to Oliver's gentle presence and writing exercises may be prompted by him being in the room.

The end result of the 4 week program will be a literary “magazine" that contains one or more typed submissions from each writer. In addition to these written submissions, there will also be an opportunity for participants to submit drawings, artwork or cartoons.

The program is open to all children who are writing on their own. The program is free for families but a SAILS Library card is required and a commitment to the four weeks is needed. Minimum number of children needed for the program to be held is 8.

This program is FULL but please sign up on our waiting list in case there is a cancellation and to be informed of future writing programs.

Dead Wake

Join us for a lively discussion of the next book in our narrative non-fiction book group: Dead Wake by Erik Larson.

Critically acclaimed 'master of narrative nonfiction' Erik Larson has produced a thrilling account of the principals and the times surrounding this tumultuous event in world history...After an intimate look at the passengers, and soon-to-be victims, who board in New York despite the warning of 'unrestricted warfare' from the German embassy, Larson turns up the pace with shorter and shorter chapters alternating between the hunted and the hunter until the actual shot. All in all a significant story. Well told.” -Florida Times-Union

Performer Jeff SnowThe Softer Side of Celtic combines the Music, Stories and History from Scotland, Ireland and England into a program that will keep your audience on the edge of their seat. Performer Jeff Snow will lead us in singing, laughing, clapping and even a bit of foot stomping. The concerts are interactive; questions and input from the audience are encouraged and become part of the event.

You might see a few tears as your audience hears the story of John Hunt who came to America in 1855.  When he left Ireland, John Hunt was 13 years old. He settled in Aberdeen Maryland, found a job, got married and had children. He never returned to Ireland and never saw his family again. The sole communication was the annual family letter that told John of the family news.  These letters were discovered in the 1970's and became the foundation for the ballad Kilkelly Ireland. You can learn more and read the first and last of the series of letters at  http://www.jeffsnow.net/kilkelly.html

Jeff is a skilled instrumentalist and a highly recognized guitar player who was featured in Acoustic Guitar Magazine. He also plays the Autoharp, Bouzouki and a variety of other instruments. His relaxed presentation is appropriate for audiences of all ages and won't break your budget. In addition to The Softer Side of Celtic, Jeff does programs tailored for kids. He is a private guitar teacher and writes for several music publications.

Let's Pretend This Never Happened

Join us for a lively discussion of the next book in our narrative non-fiction book group: Let's Pretend This Never Happened by Jenny Lawson.

In the irreverent Let’s Pretend This Never Happened, Lawson’s long-suffering husband and sweet daughter help her uncover the surprising discovery that the most terribly human moments—the ones we want to pretend never happened—are the very same moments that make us the people we are today. For every intellectual misfit who thought they were the only ones to think the things that Lawson dares to say out loud, this is a poignant and hysterical look at the dark, disturbing, yet wonderful moments of our lives. ” -Amazon

Don't Let's Go To The Dogs Tonight

Join us for a lively discussion of the next book in our narrative non-fiction book group: Don't Let's Go To The Dogs Tonight by Alexandra Fuller.

In Don’t Let’s Go to the Dogs Tonight, Alexandra Fuller remembers her African childhood with visceral authenticity. Though it is a diary of an unruly life in an often inhospitable place, it is suffused with Fuller’s endearing ability to find laughter, even when there is little to celebrate. Fuller’s debut is unsentimental and unflinching but always captivating. In wry and sometimes hilarious prose, she stares down disaster and looks back with rage and love at the life of an extraordinary family in an extraordinary time.” -Amazon

Going Clear

Join us for a lively discussion of the next book in our narrative non-fiction book group: Going Clear by Lawrence Wright.

Scientology presents itself as a scientific approach to spiritual enlightenment, but its practices have long been shrouded in mystery. Now Lawrence Wright—armed with his investigative talents, years of archival research, and more than two hundred personal interviews with current and former Scientologists—uncovers the inner workings of the church. We meet founder L. Ron Hubbard, the highly imaginative but mentally troubled science-fiction writer, and his tough, driven successor, David Miscavige. We go inside their specialized cosmology and language. We learn about the church’s legal attacks on the IRS, its vindictive treatment of critics, and its phenomenal wealth. We see the church court celebrities such as Tom Cruise while consigning its clergy to hard labor under billion-year contracts. Through it all, Wright asks what fundamentally comprises a religion, and if Scientology in fact merits this Constitutionally-protected label. Brilliantly researched, compellingly written, Going Clear pulls back the curtain on one of the most secretive organizations at work today.” -Amazon

Wesley the Owl

Join us for a lively discussion of the next book in our narrative non-fiction book group: Wesley the Owl by Stacey O'Brien.

'Stacey O'Brien tells the intriguing story of how her life was changed and rearranged when she attempted to tame and raise Wesley -- a barn owl. She shows us how she was ultimately repaid with his love and devotion, and given glimpses into the mind of an animal that has an unexpected ability to understand human language and to communicate. Fascinating!" -- Stanley Coren, psychologist and author of How Dogs Think and Why Does My Dog Act That Way?
