Furoshiki bag

We know we can preserve natural resources by recycling, reducing and reusing; and yet, how many bags of plastic bags do you have lurking in your house? You can reduce the purchase and recycling of plastic and paper bags without needing to purchase a “reusable bag.” Learn how to reuse spare fabric you already have to create customizable bags in this free Furoshiki workshop at Seekonk Library on Wednesday, April 19 at 6:30 PM. Space is limited; registration with a SAILS library card is required.

Furoshiki refers to the traditional Japanese wrapping cloth used for presenting gifts and transporting goods. By using furoshiki wrapping and tying techniques, you can easily transform a square piece of fabric to create a tote bag or purse just the right size while on the go. Librarian Michelle Gario will present this informal workshop to show you various bag styles that can be created from one piece of fabric. Participants may bring in your own fabric (33-39” square) or use sample fabric provided. Plastic grocery bags will also be collected for recycling.

Don't Let's Go To The Dogs Tonight

Join us for a lively discussion of the next book in our narrative non-fiction book group: Don't Let's Go To The Dogs Tonight by Alexandra Fuller.

In Don’t Let’s Go to the Dogs Tonight, Alexandra Fuller remembers her African childhood with visceral authenticity. Though it is a diary of an unruly life in an often inhospitable place, it is suffused with Fuller’s endearing ability to find laughter, even when there is little to celebrate. Fuller’s debut is unsentimental and unflinching but always captivating. In wry and sometimes hilarious prose, she stares down disaster and looks back with rage and love at the life of an extraordinary family in an extraordinary time.” -Amazon

Going Clear

Join us for a lively discussion of the next book in our narrative non-fiction book group: Going Clear by Lawrence Wright.

Scientology presents itself as a scientific approach to spiritual enlightenment, but its practices have long been shrouded in mystery. Now Lawrence Wright—armed with his investigative talents, years of archival research, and more than two hundred personal interviews with current and former Scientologists—uncovers the inner workings of the church. We meet founder L. Ron Hubbard, the highly imaginative but mentally troubled science-fiction writer, and his tough, driven successor, David Miscavige. We go inside their specialized cosmology and language. We learn about the church’s legal attacks on the IRS, its vindictive treatment of critics, and its phenomenal wealth. We see the church court celebrities such as Tom Cruise while consigning its clergy to hard labor under billion-year contracts. Through it all, Wright asks what fundamentally comprises a religion, and if Scientology in fact merits this Constitutionally-protected label. Brilliantly researched, compellingly written, Going Clear pulls back the curtain on one of the most secretive organizations at work today.” -Amazon

Wesley the Owl

Join us for a lively discussion of the next book in our narrative non-fiction book group: Wesley the Owl by Stacey O'Brien.

'Stacey O'Brien tells the intriguing story of how her life was changed and rearranged when she attempted to tame and raise Wesley -- a barn owl. She shows us how she was ultimately repaid with his love and devotion, and given glimpses into the mind of an animal that has an unexpected ability to understand human language and to communicate. Fascinating!" -- Stanley Coren, psychologist and author of How Dogs Think and Why Does My Dog Act That Way?
