Memory

Though often overlooked, periodically checking the health of our brains is just as important as checking things like cholesterol and blood pressure. This becomes especially important as we grow older.

Even if you don’t have any concerns right now, taking a 10 minute memory screening could be a meaningful checkup to see how your memory is now and can be used for later comparisons down the road. Keep in mind that any results are not a diagnosis of any particular illness and do not replace actually talking to your doctor, especially if you are having concerns about your memory. Laurie Given from the Rhode Island Mood and Memory Research Institute will be hosting this free memory screening at the Seekonk Library.

Register online to reserve your screening session. If time allows, walk-ins will be taken after those who have registered on a first come first serve basis.

Bossypants

Join us for a lively discussion of the next book in our narrative non-fiction book group: The Mother Tongue by Bill Bryson.

“’Bossypants’ isn’t a memoir. It’s a spiky blend of humor, introspection, critical thinking, and Nora Ephron-isms for a new generation. But it chronologically follows Ms. Fey through an awkward girlhood in Upper Darby, Pa., teenage years with a coterie of gay friends and a fish-out-of-water stint at the University of Virginia.” Janet Maslin, New York Times

The Wright Brothers

Join us for a lively discussion of the next book in our narrative non-fiction book group: The Wright Brothers by David McCullough.

“David McCullough has etched a brisk, admiring portrait of the modest, hardworking Ohioans who designed an airplane in their bicycle shop and solved the mystery of flight on the sands of Kitty Hawk, N.C. He captures the marvel of what the Wrights accomplished and, just as important, the wonder felt by their contemporaries. . . . Mr. McCullough is in his element writing about seemingly ordinary folk steeped in the cardinal American virtues—self-reliance and can-do resourcefulness.” Roger Lowenstein The Wall Street Journal

Mind's Eye

Join us for a lively discussion of the next book in our narrative non-fiction book group: The Mother Tongue by Bill Bryson.

“Sacks the doctor once again dramatises the most strange and thrilling scientific and cultural issue of our time – the nature of the human mind – through the simple act of telling stories. And he does so with avuncular good nature, even in the midst of his own agonies. Read him for endless consolation.” -Literary Review

H is for Hawk

Join us for a lively discussion of the next book in our narrative non-fiction book group: The Mother Tongue by Bill Bryson.

“Helen Macdonald’s beautiful and nearly feral book, H Is for Hawk, reminds us that excellent nature writing can lay bare some of the intimacies of the wild world as well. Her book is so good that, at times, it hurt me to read it. It draws blood, in ways that seem curative. . . . [An] instant classic.” Dwight Garner, New York Times

I am Malala

Join us for a lively discussion of the next book in our narrative non-fiction book group: The Mother Tongue by Bill Bryson.

“Bryson displays an encyclopedic knowledge of his topic, and this inevitably encourages a light tone; the more you know about a subject, the more absurd it becomes. No jokes are necessary, the facts do well enough by themselves, and Bryson supplies tens per page. As well as tossing off gems of fractured English (from a Japanese eraser: “This product will self-destruct in Mother Earth.”), Bryson frequently takes time to compare the idiosyncratic tongue with other languages. Not only does this give a laugh (one word: Welsh), and always shed considerable light, it also makes the reader feel fortunate to speak English.” -Amazon.com

Being Mortal

Join us for a lively discussion of the next book in our narrative non-fiction book group: The Mother Tongue by Bill Bryson.

“Dr. Gawande’s book is not of the kind that some doctors write, reminding us how grim the fact of death can be. Rather, he shows how patients in the terminal phase of their illness can maintain important qualities of life.” Wall Street Journal

Bringing Down The House

Join us for a lively discussion of the next book in our narrative non-fiction book group: Wild by Cheryl Strayed.

“In the Greed Is Good ’80s, a group of MIT geniuses decided to break the bank at Las Vegas. Utilizing their own mathematical wizardry and large doses of moxie, these six co-conspirators legally beat Vegas’s largest casinos out of more than $3 million in less than two years. Harvard University graduate/thriller author Ben Mezrich has recomposed their story, an arresting hybrid of Liar’s Poker, The Cuckoo’s Egg, and Ocean’s Eleven.” -Barnes & Noble
