Explore American and Middle Eastern culture, history, and politics in a series of monthly Saturday lectures, with a question and answer period, by retired professor and Springfield resident Dr. Donald Murphy.
The Arab countries of the Middle East and North Africa won their freedom largely through the efforts of secular nationalists, often in the form of the military. Too often this new found independence was subverted by these same military leaders. The recent Arab Spring has brought calls for dramatic, revolutionary change that would bring new opportunities for people to be involved in the decision making of governing. Drawing upon his experiences while living in Egypt, Dr. Murphy will examine the promise of the spring and the reality of post revolutionary changes highlighting events of the Arab Spring in Egypt and Iran.

Ekphrasis Poetry--Back by popular demand, writers will get inspiration from pieces done by local visual artists, including Narelle Thomas, Awilda Oxios, and Ronald Coolbeth. After a brief introduction, you'll have the chance to write poetry inspired by one or more of the pieces of art. Then we'll share what we've written.

Stop by the Central Library's Wellman Hall on Sunday afternoons beginning in January and you may get hooked on a new craft! You can talk to our new “stitching pro” Steven, plus meet other needle workers and exchange tips, techniques and favorite resources to refine your skills. On the second and fourth Sunday of the month, from 2-3:30 p.m., Steven will display his needlework and be available to take your questions. All skill levels are welcome, and basic guidance with knitting is also offered. Needlework is a great way to make gifts, practice artistry, coordination, and dexterity, and can be fun for hours!
