misc_none 7:00 PM  -  9:00 PM Books on Tap Reads Fates and Furies Remind Me about this Event   Tell a Friend

Every story has two sides. Every relationship has two perspectives. And sometimes, it turns out, the key to a great marriage is not its truths but its secrets. At the core of this rich, expansive, layered novel, Lauren Groff presents the story of one such marriage over the course of twenty-four years.

At age twenty-two, Lotto and Mathilde are tall, glamorous, madly in love, and destined for greatness. A decade later, their marriage is still the envy of their friends, but with an electric thrill we understand that things are even more complicated and remarkable than they have seemed. With stunning revelations and multiple threads, and in prose that is vibrantly alive and original, Groff delivers a deeply satisfying novel about love, art, creativity, and power that is unlike anything that has come before it. Profound, surprising, propulsive, and emotionally riveting, it stirs both the mind and the heart.

To RSVP for our Books on Tap discussion of Lauren Groff's Fates and Furies  please go to: meetup.com/Stratford-book-club-social-hub/ or click on Register. Don't forget to stop by the library to borrow a copy of the book.

We'll get settled, order food/drinks, and catch up with everyone at 7pm on Tuesday, October 24th at The Sitting Duck Tavern. Our book discussion starts at 7:30pm. Cheers!

misc_none 2:00 PM  -  4:30 PM Korean Film & Food! Remind Me about this Event   Tell a Friend

The Korean Spirit and Culture Promotion Project (“KSCPP”)  will present a free program which includes a showing of historical documentary followed by the renactment of a traditional Korean wedding ceremony and the serving of Korean food.

The KSCPP has offered numerous free presentations on Korean history and culture throughout the country (over 1,500 times in the U.S. alone).

One of the documentaries will focus on King Sejong the Great, a truly enlightened monarch from the 15th century Korea.  His motto was, “The duty of a king is to love his people. That is all.”  With this belief, King Sejong initiated numerous cultural achievements and scientific inventions to improve the welfare of his people. To spread the benefits of such accomplishments, he enhanced the moveable metal type printing technology (originally invented in Korea 200 years before Gutenberg in Europe) and printed large runs of books.  His most important contribution was the invention of the Korean Alphabet Hangeul, which he created to eradicate the illiteracy in the country.

A full Korean meal will follow the film showing.

The program is free and open to the public but seating will be limited and RESERVATIONS are required by calling: 203.385.4162.  Limited to 40 participants.

Registration will begin on October 1, 2017

Author Martin Irons will discuss his book Phalanx Against the Divine Wind: Protecting the Fast Carrier Task Force During World War 2.

The book tells the tale of the teenage USS Haynsworth crew that fought for survival during the largest kamikaze attack of World War II.

Admiral William Halsey's Fast Carrier Task Force was the ultimate naval armada during World War II. But to keep his carriers safe, Halsey relied on the destroyers that encircled the battle group. As part of Destroyer Squadron 62, the USS Haynsworth DD 700 battled the Japanese, captured prisoners on the high seas, and rescued pilots. But the teenage crew had to fight for their own suvival after being struck during the largest kamikaze attack of the war. Kikusui No. 1 was an epic battle that spanned 30 hours as nearly 700 enemy planes attacked the U.S. Navy warships near Okinawa on April 6-7, 1945.

Phalanx Against the Divine Wind: Protecting the Fast Carrier Task Force During World War 2 will be available for purchase after the talk.
