Homework Helpers is a free library program for families looking for small group help for children grades 1 to 6 in reading, math, and other subjects. High school students will assist children who need extra attention and help, but cannot take the place of professional tutoring or medically prescribed educational assistance. 

Interested parents (no children, please) should attend the registration meeting on Saturday, February 28 at 11 a.m. in the Lovell Room. At this meeting, librarians and tutors will be present to go over the program, talk to parents about their children's needs, and match up families with teen tutors who have the right interests and schedule to help children. Attendance and an application are required for participation. 

This program is courtesy of the Carol Pieper Memorial Fund.

American military historian Matthew Bartlett presents this fascinating program on female spies during the Civil War. The program focuses on four women who risked all for their country during the Civil War. Mr. Bartlett will tell how these women played an important part in the extensive spy networks that were formed on both the Union and Confederate sides.  He will be dressed in period costume for this program.

Matthew Bartlett is the author of the series of books on the Battle of Gettysburg, "The Gettysburg Chronicle," he has a Master's of Military History with a specialization in Civil War Studies from the American Military University.

Sponsored by the John Hutchinson Memorial Fund.

The Children's Department and Parents' Place are hosting two sessions by the SEEDS Network, LLC, a statewide early childhood resource. The Book & Boogie Beach Party is open to children ages 1-5 and their parents.

Call Stratford Parents' Place to register for one of two sessions: 5:30-6:15 pm OR 6:30-7:15 pm.

The program will be held at Stratford Parents' Place - Johnson House Gymnasium, Stratford Academy, 719 Birdseye Street, Stratford, CT.

Sunday Afternoon Talks: Circumstances Surrounding the Loss of the USS Quincy Remind Me about this Event Tell a Friend

The Stratford Library continues "Sunday Afternoon Talks", its monthly series of informative and entertaining talks featuring prominent local guest speakers, on sunday March 8th at 2:00 p.m. with Historian Bob Begin who will discuss  "The Loss of the USS Quincy". "Sunday Afternoon Talks" is free and open to the public.

"The Loss of the USS Quincy" tells the story of a heavy cruiser, built in and named after the City of Quincy. She was launched in the middle of the Great Depression and historian Bob Begin followed her career from the waning peacetime years through the outbreak of hostilities of World War II to her loss at Guadalcanal in August of 1942. Begin's research includes interviews with men aboard the Quincy that night, family members who lost kin and a thorough analysis of the battle from both Japaneses and American viewpoints.

Library guest speaker Bob Begin is making his first appearance in Stratford. His lively PowerPoint presentations on historical topcis as varied as "The Barbary Prates of the 1800's" and "Lawrence of Arabia, the Middle East and Palestine" have been favorably received in libraries and other venues across the state.

"Sunday Afternoon Talks" with Bob Begin will be held in the Stratford Library's Lovell Room beginning at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday Marhc 8th. It is made possible by the J.T. Friderichs Memorial Fund. In this fun, hands-on course you will learn all the basic computer skills including using the mouse and the keyboard, working in Microsoft Windows, using Microsoft Word, surfing the internet, and using email.  A course book will be provided to each student.

The course runs for six weeks.  Each class will last approximately 75 minutes with additional time for questions and practice.  Courses will be taught by librarians from Stratford Library.

For Women's History Month, MAYBELLE CARTER AMERICAN MUSICAL LEGEND!
 
Maybelle Carter was a core member of the Carter Family, the first superstars of Country Music, who enjoyed tremendous popularity and success during the Great Depression. The Carters collected backwoods music, recorded hits, composed, toured extensively, & are an enduring influence to this day.Maybelle Carter was a virtuoso guitarist in a number of styles, inventing a style which bears her name. She was a composer of many songs, and a multi-instrumentalist, as well. Jazz songstress Nina Et Cetera returns to the Library with this unique new program and will tell Carter's story with illustrative songs, musical examples, and other lore from the period. This program is entertaining, inspiring, and educational. Free and open to the public!

Microsoft Word Part I: 10am to noon

Learn how to use Microsoft Word in this special two part class taught by Dennis Ahearn from the CT Works Career Coach. Microsoft Word is a word processing program that allows users to create professional documents such as resumes, letters, fax cover sheets, reports, legal documents, brochures, manuals and more. It is an efficient tool for students, business owners and even working individuals to have on their computers. Microsoft Word has tools to format fonts, add clipart, add page numbers, and create tables and headers.

Part I covers the basics of using Microsoft Word including the tools and tool bars used in formatting documents.  (Part 2 is from 1pm to 3pm and requires separate registration).

Space is limited.  Registration is required.

CTWorks Career Coach 

Due to popular demand, the Stratford Library has announced that the CTWorks Career Coach, a career center on wheels designed to deliver career services and trianing opportunities at a variety of locations thorughout Connecticut, will continue library visits through 2015. The Career Coach delivers free services to low-wage workers and job seekers in Southwestern Connecticut who are unable to get the services at local career centers due to lack of transportation, childcare or employment schedules. 

Visitors to the coach will find computer workshops, 10 computer workstations, high speed access to the Internet (via onboard satellite), 42" plasma TV with smartboard overlay (for training use by instructor), 10 wireless laptops and exterior plasma TV, interview room and an ADA-compliant lift and workstation for people with disabilities. These workshops are free and open to job seekers 16 years of age or older. Basic computer skills are helpful but not required. First come, first served. Limited seating. 

The 2015 schedule is: March 30 (Microsoft Word class, pre-registration required), April 27 (Microsoft Excel class, pre-registration required), May 18, June 29 (Resume Writing class, pre-registration required), July 27, August 31, September 28, October 26, November 30 and December 21.

Stratford Library Annual Benefit Evening on Saturday April 25, 2015 at 6:30 p.m.

The Stratford Library Board of Trustees will present its annual major fund-raiser for the library on Saturday, April 25 beginning at 6:30 pm. The 12th annual event is entitled "Midnight Train to Stratford" will have a Motown party theme and is a gala evening of hot music, dancing, appetizers, dinner, fine beverages and delectable desserts. The event will be held at Oronoque Country Club in Stratford and all proceeds will benefit the library's collections.

Major sponsors for the benefit are currently being sought an dinclude several categories with special perks for contributors. Four different sponsor levels range from Bronze ($500-$999) to Platinum ($5,000+) and offer a variey of perks including tickets to the event, premium seating, full page ad in program, table signage, photo op for media publications and more.

Bill Dedman is a Pulitzer Prize-winning American journalist and co-author of the No. 1 New York Times bestselling book "Empty Mansions: The Mysterious Life of Huguette Clark and the Spending of a Great American Fortune." Dedman uncovered the case of the reclusive copper heiress Huguette Clark in 2010, documenting her life in a series of reports for NBC News. Dedman and Clark's cousin, Paul Clark Newell, Jr., co-wrote the nonfiction "Empty Mansions" about Clark and her father, the Gilded Age industrialist and senator William A. Clark. In 1989, Dedman received the Pulitzer Prize for Investigative Reporting for The Color of Money, a series of articles in The Atlanta Journal-Constitution on racial discrimination by mortgage lenders in middle-income black neighborhoods. Microsoft Excel Part I: 10 am - noon.

Dennis Ahearn from CT Works will teach a two part class on Microsoft Excel.  Excel is a software program that allows users to organize, format and calculate data with formulas using a spreadsheet system. This software is part of the Microsoft Office Suite and is compatible with other applications in the Office suite of applications. Excel features the ability to perform basic (and some complex) calculations, use graphing tools, create pivot tables and create macro’s using a simple programming language.

Registration is required for each Excel session. 

The Career Coach is ADA-compliant with a lift and workstation.  All sessions are free and open to the public.  The Coach closes for lunch from noon to 1pm

This course will cover all the basics.  You’ll learn how to use a browser to safely surf the web.  You’ll learn techniques to help you recognize and avoid phishing schemes and frauds.  You’ll also learn about the fun aspects of the internet, including popular sites for video and music, sites that will entertain and challenge you, and opportunities for continued learning and mental growth.  You’ll also be introduced to the most popular social media sites.  If you use a smart phone or tablet, you’ll also learn how many popular apps cross over from device to device.  A course book will be provided to each student.

The course runs for six weeks. Each class will last approximately 75 minutes with additional time for questions and practice. Courses will be taught by librarians from Stratford Library.
