Our Leading to Reading kits can help your child get a head start on learning how to read!

In this one hour workshop, parents and caregivers will learn strategies for helping their young children gain pre-literacy skills that will help get them ready to read. Participants will learn how to use the books, toys, and activities in our Leading to Reading kits and can check out a kit at the end of the program.

Please note: This program is for adults only. No babysitting is available.

Calling all local writers!

Join Stratford Library on October 8 from noon to 4pm for Indie Author Day, a nationwide event sponsored by BiblioBoard. Indie Author Day is designed to bring local writers together to meet and learn from each other and to participate in panels and lectures on self-publishing, self-marketing and other hot issues for indie writers, in addition to short readings and book signings. Everyone is welcome to attend and meet local aspiring authors and to discover new talent. Local writers will be selling their materials on-site for visitors to pick up their next favorite book.

Local authors will be reading from their books and sharing information to help other aspiring writers.

2-3pm – National Indie Author Panel Discussion – Live digital event featuring Q&A with writers, agents and other industry leaders. The panel will feature Jon Fine, previously from Amazon, as the moderator, and panelists Kiera Parrott of Library Journal, Robin Cutler of IngramSpark, 2012 Mover and Shaker award-winning librarian Jim Blanton and BCALA award-winning author L. Penelope. Organized by BiblioBoard, Self-E, and Library Journal.

3-4pm – Local Author book signings and sales in the lobby.

Stratford Library is teaming up with the Goodwill Career Center to offer a Resume Writing Workshop.

A resume is the gateway to the job interview. In the Resume Writing & Transferrable Skills workshop presentation, learn how to format your skills, education and work history to best reflect your qualifications. In addition, learn about the lesser-known aspects of resume writing such as highlighting your transferrable skills, and formatting your resume to be compatible with the online Applicant Tracking Systems.

Learn how to set up a resume to best present your skills to perspective employers; get tips on writing an effective cover letter. Attendees will receive hands-on help with their resumes.

CTWorks Career Coach

Looking for a job? Updating you resume? Visit the CTWorks Career Coach (bus), parked outside the Library! Work one-on one with a coach or participate in a workshop. The Career Coach features computer workstations and Internet access in a classroom setting. The Career Coach is ADA-compliant with a lift and workstation. All sessions are free and open to the public on a first-come, first-served basis. The Coach closes for lunch from noon to 1pm

The CT WORKS Career Coach parks in front of the library on Main Street.

Lorraine Poppa, classical music enthusiast, will give a brief talk about classical music and Yo-Yo Ma. Her talk will be followed by a Lincoln Center Local Free Screening of the New York Philharmonic with Yo-Yo Ma at Avery Fisher Hall.

This screening features the New York Philharmonic’s opening gala concert from 2013 with music director Alan Gilbert and special guest cello soloist Yo-Yo Ma. The concert features dance-inspired orchestral works, including Azul by Osvaldo Golijov, a cello concerto written for Ma; the world premiere of an arrangement of Astor Piazzolla’s La serie del Ángel by Octavio Brunetti, commissioned by the New York Philharmonic; and a classic by Maurice Ravel, Alborada del gracioso.

Lincoln Center Local partners with your local library and community center to bring exclusive free screenings of Lincoln Center’s finest performances directly to your neighborhood.
