It's easy to join: fill out a ticket for each book read during our six-week program and drop it off at the Library! Can't make it to the Library each week? Send us a direct message on Facebook, Instagram, or Twitter and be sure to include your name, telephone/email, and book(s) you read for the week. Winners will be called and announced on our social media pages each week.

misc_none 7:00 PM  -  9:00 PM Books on Tap Remind Me about this Event   Tell a Friend

This month we are reading Evicted by Matthew Desmond.
Even in the most desolate areas of American cities, evictions used to be rare. But today, most poor renting families are spending more than half of their income on housing, and eviction has become ordinary, especially for single mothers. In vivid, intimate prose, Matthew Desmond provides a ground-level view of one of the most urgent issues facing America today.

We'll meet upstairs at the Sitting Duck Tavern. Get settled, order food/drinks, and catch up with everyone at 7pm on Tuesday, February 28th. Our book discussion starts at 7:30pm. (**Snow date: Tuesday, 3/7. Same time, same place.)

Please RSVP through Meet Up: https://www.meetup.com/Stratford-book-club-social-hub/events/236262549/

misc_none 2:00 PM  -  3:00 PM Talk: An Introduction to American Indian Music Remind Me about this Event   Tell a Friend

AN INTRODUCTION TO AMERICAN INDIAN MUSIC celebrates in depth the vibrant soundscape of Native North America from the “heartbeat” of intertribal drums and “warble” of Native flutes to contemporary rock, hip-hop, and electronic music. Drawing on more than one hundred interviews with musicians, producers, ethnographers, and record-label owners, author, photographer, and musician Craig Harris conjures an aural tapestry in which powwow drums and end-blown woodwinds resound alongside operatic and symphonic strains and Native infused rock, jazz, reggae, country music, blues, hip-hip, and electronic dance music.

Driven by a passion for music, percussionist/educator Craig Harris (Drum Away the Blues), author of  The New Folk Music, The Band: Pioneers of Americana Music, and Heartbeat, Warble, and the Electric Powwow: American Indian Music  has covered the roots music scene for newspapers, magazines, and music-oriented websites for more than four decades. A skilled hand drummer, he's appeared in concert and/or on recordings with Rod MacDonald, C.J. Chenier & His Red Hot Louisiana Zydeco Band, Jonathan Edwards, Greg Brown, Don White, Melanie, and the late Rick Danko (The Band) and Merl Saunders, and is currently  a member of  the Standing Bear Jam Band and the Gaea Star Band (with whom he cohosts the weekly Gaea Crystal Radio Hour). Applehead/SONY released their CD, Who We Are in November 2015. Possessing a Master’s in education, Harris taught music in public and charter schools for a quarter of a century before launching his multicultural, participatory, and fun-for-all-ages Drum Away the Blues program in 2009.

~~SPECIAL FOR "NATIVE AMERICAN MONTH"!

Craig Harris has been presenting all-ages Drum Away the Blues programs in libraries throughout the Northeast since 2009. I am currently scheduling an exciting multimedia and participatory adult program, ?An Introduction to American Indian Music, based on my recently published book, Heartbeat, Warble, and the Electric Powwow. There is considerable interest in Indigenous culture and this program will undoubtably draw a large, diverse audience.

misc_none 2:00 PM  -  3:00 PM Sunday Afternoon Talks: Leafcutter Ants Remind Me about this Event   Tell a Friend

Dr. Barbara Beitch’s observations of ant behavior in the Discovery Room’s leafcutter colony, as well as numerous queries from visitors about these intriguing social insects, have led her to look for answers to such questions as what determines which caste member will develop from each fertilized egg, what do the ants do with all those leaves, where is the queen, why sometimes one sees a little ant hitching a ride on a leaf carried by another ant, what can we infer from the possibility that leafcutter ants are the most ancient agronomists in the world, and why do the ants have a garbage dump and a cemetery.
In this presentation, Barbara will be sharing what she has learned about leafcutter ants and other highly organized “eusocial” species, about genetic and environmental factors that shape leafcutter caste determination, and about the ecology of leafcutter ants—their symbiotic relationship with fungi and their ecological niche in the rainforest.
