misc_none 2:00 PM  -  3:00 PM Talk: AN INTRODUCTION TO AMERICAN INDIAN MUSIC Remind Me about this Event   Tell a Friend

SPECIAL FOR "NATIVE AMERICAN MONTH"!

Craig Harris has been presenting all-ages Drum Away the Blues programs in libraries throughout the Northeast since 2009. I am currently scheduling an exciting multimedia and participatory adult program, ?An Introduction to American Indian Music, based on my recently published book, Heartbeat, Warble, and the Electric Powwow. There is considerable interest in Indigenous culture and this program will undoubtably draw a large, diverse audience.

Heartbeat, Warble, and the Electric Powwow: American Indian Music (University of Oklahoma Press, May 2016) celebrates in depth the vibrant soundscape of Native North America from the “heartbeat” of intertribal drums and “warble” of Native flutes to contemporary rock, hip-hop, and electronic music. Drawing on more than one hundred interviews with musicians, producers, ethnographers, and record-label owners, author, photographer, and musician Craig Harris conjures an aural tapestry in which powwow drums and end-blown woodwinds resound alongside operatic and symphonic strains and Native infused rock, jazz, reggae, country music, blues, hip-hip, and electronic dance music.

Driven by a passion for music, percussionist/educator Craig Harris (Drum Away the Blues), author of  The New Folk Music, The Band: Pioneers of Americana Music, and Heartbeat, Warble, and the Electric Powwow: American Indian Music  has covered the roots music scene for newspapers, magazines, and music-oriented websites for more than four decades. A skilled hand drummer, he's appeared in concert and/or on recordings with Rod MacDonald, C.J. Chenier & His Red Hot Louisiana Zydeco Band, Jonathan Edwards, Greg Brown, Don White, Melanie, and the late Rick Danko (The Band) and Merl Saunders, and is currently  a member of  the Standing Bear Jam Band and the Gaea Star Band (with whom he cohosts the weekly Gaea Crystal Radio Hour). Applehead/SONY released their CD, Who We Are in November 2015. Possessing a Master’s in education, Harris taught music in public and charter schools for a quarter of a century before launching his multicultural, participatory, and fun-for-all-ages Drum Away the Blues program in 2009.
