Has your child recently been diagnosed with autism or another developmental disability? Board Certified Behavior Analyst, Meaghan Bracchitta*, will be at the Sussex-Wantage Branch for three consecutive Saturdays (2/13-2/27) to help answer the thousands of questions you may now have.

  • 2/13 - Overview of autism and developmental disabilities as well as other common mental or psychological dual diagnoses. The fundamentals of Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA), the scientific and evidenced based treatment theory used for individuals with autism and developmental and/or intellectual disabilities, will also be discussed.
  • 2/20 - Learn how to be the best advocate for your child. What should a good therapist offer? What should a treatment plan and associated data look like?  What is the IEP (individualized education plan) process? This session will define important terms and what you and your child are legally entitled to as part of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA).
  • 2/27 - The hardest work is at home. What can you do to support your child and your family? Learn about helpful resources and local support groups for family members; including siblings, parents, and individuals with disabilities.

*Meaghan Bracchitta is a Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) with a Masters in Education in Curriculum and Instruction and Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) with 5 years experience working with children and adults with autism and other developmental disabilities. Currently she is employed by The Arc of Bergen and Passaic counties in Hackensack, NJ, working with adults with autism, developmental disabilities, and mental health disorders.

Anime enthusiasts are invited to learn new techniques from an amazing anime artist!  Kaitlyn Texel, a talented animation and illustration student from Montclair State University, will share some of her work and give pointers to beginning artists. Ample time will be allowed for everyone to draw and share their craft. Some supplies will be provided, but please feel free to bring your own.

For teens and young adults. This free workshop is limited to 20 participants. Registration begins on Saturday, January 30th.

S.T.E.A.M. stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math. Each month the libraries will be exploring a new S.T.E.A.M. topic with hands-on activities geared to kids in grades 2 and above. This month we're exploring the world of rocks. First we'll use Starburst candies to demonstrate how rocks form, and then we'll learn to classify rocks based on hardness. Each participant will make their own rock in a cup to take home and study.

Each session is limited to 15 participants. Please register at the listing for your preferred Branch beginning February 3:

Local genealogy enthusiast, Catherine DiPietro, can help. Learn how to use the many resources available through the Library's website and other free internet sites as well. Learn to construct your search and organize your results for a clear and accurate picture. Validity of the data you recover and advanced research procedures will also be discussed.

All you need to get started is the name, birthdate and birthplace of at least one relative born before 1940. Bring your own laptop or tablet if possible. Space is limited to 15 adults. Registration is required and underway.

Children ages 5-10 are invited to practice their reading skills the 4th Tuesday of every month by reading aloud to a certified therapy dog. Each child will be allowed a full 10 minutes of one-on-one reading time. The dogs provide an uncritical ear while the children gain self-esteem, confidence, public speaking skills and a love of reading. The dogs never interrupt or criticize!

Each child signs up for a specific time slot:  4:00, 4:15, 4:30 or 4:45. Registration begins February 9 and is in person or over the phone by calling the Louise Childs Branch at 973 770-1000. Register early, slots fill up quickly.

Please arrive on time with a couple of books or early enough to pick out some library books.

Has your child recently been diagnosed with autism or another developmental disability? Board Certified Behavior Analyst, Meaghan Bracchitta*, will be at the Sussex-Wantage Branch for three consecutive Saturdays (2/13-2/27) to help answer the thousands of questions you may now have.

  • 2/13 - Overview of autism and developmental disabilities as well as other common mental or psychological dual diagnoses. The fundamentals of Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA), the scientific and evidenced based treatment theory used for individuals with autism and developmental and/or intellectual disabilities, will also be discussed.
  • 2/20 - Learn how to be the best advocate for your child. What should a good therapist offer? What should a treatment plan and associated data look like?  What is the IEP (individualized education plan) process? This session will define important terms and what you and your child are legally entitled to as part of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA).
  • 2/27 - The hardest work is at home. What can you do to support your child and your family? Learn about helpful resources and local support groups for family members; including siblings, parents, and individuals with disabilities.

As a School Business Administrator and former Business Education Teacher Ms. MacKenzie has years of experience in teaching people how to get a job. She's bringing that expertise to Main Library to conduct three, hands-on workshops in which you will learn to:

  1. prepare a resume (today)
  2. write a cover letter (March 16)
  3. improve your interview skills (March 30).

Please bring a rough draft of your employment history, including volunteer experience, and job postings in which you are interested. Bring a laptop if possible. Library laptops can be provided.

Space is limited to 20 adults in each workshop. Participants are encouraged to register for all three as the activities build on the previous week's experience, but you may sign up for individual workshops as well. Registration for all sessions begins February 17.

Children ages 5-10 are invited to practice their reading skills the 4th Tuesday of every month by reading aloud to a certified therapy dog. Each child will be allowed a full 10 minutes of one-on-one reading time. The dogs provide an uncritical ear while the children gain self-esteem, confidence, public speaking skills and a love of reading. The dogs never interrupt or criticize!

Each child signs up for a specific time slot:  4:00, 4:15, 4:30 or 4:45. Registration begins March 8 and is in person or over the phone by calling the Louise Childs Branch at 973 770-1000. Register early, slots fill up quickly.

Please arrive on time with a couple of books or early enough to pick out some library books.

As a School Business Administrator and former Business Education Teacher Ms. MacKenzie has years of experience in teaching people how to get a job. She's bringing that expertise to Main Library to conduct three, hands-on workshops in which you will learn to:

  1. prepare a resume (March 2)
  2. write a cover letter (March 16)
  3. improve your interview skills (today).

Please bring a rough draft of your employment history, including volunteer experience, and job postings in which you are interested. Bring a laptop if possible. Library laptops can be provided.

Space is limited to 20 adults in each workshop. Participants are encouraged to register for all three as the activities build on the previous week's experience, but you may sign up for individual workshops as well. Registration for all sessions begins February 17.

Children ages 5-10 are invited to practice their reading skills the 4th Tuesday of every month by reading aloud to a certified therapy dog. Each child will be allowed a full 10 minutes of one-on-one reading time. The dogs provide an uncritical ear while the children gain self-esteem, confidence, public speaking skills and a love of reading. The dogs never interrupt or criticize!

Each child signs up for a specific time slot:  4:00, 4:15, 4:30 or 4:45. Registration begins April 12 and is in person or over the phone by calling the Louise Childs Branch at 973 770-1000. Register early, slots fill up quickly.

Please arrive on time with a couple of books or early enough to pick out some library books.

The LC Readers meets the first Wednesday of selected months from 10:30-11:30 a.m. Group picks will focus on thought-provoking, enjoyable, contemporary literature with occasional discussion of classical literature and notable nonfiction as well.
