Meet Animal Ambassadors such as Inca the Spectacled owl, whose origins are found in Peru, or Sydney, an Australian Eclectus parrot. Discover some amazing adaptations with a colorful Sinaloan Milk snake, an African tortoise, or perhaps a Red-foot tortoise family from South America. Children will be introduced to enigmatic frogs such as a Red-eyed tree frog, hailing from Central America, or an African bull frog (the second largest species in the world). For the softer side of nature, we’ll learn about a family of South American chinchillas or a Flemish Giant rabbit. We will explore the Ambassador’s diverse habitats as well as conservation issues and challenges they face. Animal Embassy enables people of all ages to connect with the natural world with this unforgettable, interactive live animal presentation!

3rd Monday night of every month

Our fiction book discussion is up and running again. We have a great new group ready and willing to try reading something different from what they would usually read.

Books can be picked up at the meeting or at the circualtion desk.

The Graveyard book by Neil Gaiman

It takes a graveyard to raise a child.

Nobody Owens, known as Bod, is a normal boy. He would be completely normal if he didn't live in a graveyard, being raised by ghosts, with a guardian who belongs to neither the world of the living nor the dead. There are adventures in the graveyard for a boy—an ancient Indigo Man, a gateway to the abandoned city of ghouls, the strange and terrible Sleer. But if Bod leaves the graveyard, he will be in danger from the man Jack—who has already killed Bod's family.

“We Shall Have them with Us Always" The Ghosts of the Mark Twain House

Mark Twain and his family lived in an elegant Gothic home in Hartford, Connecticut for seventeen years. In recent years, there have been accounts of presences in the house - a woman in white, odd noises, even a whiff of cigar smoke (Clemens smoked 20 to 40 a day). Television shows such as Ghost Hunters have paid a visit. In this book, author Steve Courtney recounts the tales of hauntings and the investigations that have followed. He also adds the fascinating tale of the iconic American author's own interest in the occult and spiritualism.

Relive the heyday of Connecticut’s premier shopping destination.

Joe Waxman is a volunteer at the Connecticut Historical Society. He remembers growing up in Hartford where G. Fox & Company was a part of his life. He says that Fox’s “touches people’s personal history.” Joe will also talk about his admiration for Beatrice Fox Auerbach whose accomplishments were significant  on both local and national levels.

It’s time to revisit G. Fox Co., where the customer was always right! Bring your memories along with your favorite purchases. We’ll have some tables for display of G. Fox Co. treasures and time for you to share a favorite G. Fox story.

3rd Monday night of every month

Our fiction book discussion is up and running again. We have a great new group ready and willing to try reading something different from what they would usually read.

Books can be picked up at the meeting or at the circualtion desk.

Frankenstein by Mary Shelly

At once a Gothic thriller, a passionate romance, and a cautionary tale about the dangers of science, Frankenstein tells the story of committed science student Victor Frankenstein. Obsessed with discovering the cause of generation and life and bestowing animation upon lifeless matter, Frankenstein assembles a human being from stolen body parts but; upon bringing it to life, he recoils in horror at the creature's hideousness. Tormented by isolation and loneliness, the once-innocent creature turns to evil and unleashes a campaign of murderous revenge against his creator, Frankenstein.

Frankenstein, an instant bestseller and an important ancestor of both the horror and science fiction genres, not only tells a terrifying story, but also raises profound, disturbing questions about the very nature of life and the place of humankind within the cosmos: What does it mean to be human? What responsibilities do we have to each other? How far can we go in tampering with Nature? In our age, filled with news of organ donation genetic engineering, and bio-terrorism, these questions are more relevant than ever

Maleficent (PG; 97 minutes): As a teenager, Maleficent is a powerful and respected winged fairy helping to rule a magical land full of strange creatures. Her homeland borders a country that is populated by humans and run by the cruel King Henry. One day, Henry's son Stefan traipses into the fairy's land and meets Maleficent, and the two fall in love. Year later, Henry seeks to take over the magical land next to his kingdom, but is thwarted in battle by Maleficent. He demands revenge, and eventually his now-grown son Stefan succeeds by betraying the fairy and clipping her wings. In response, an infuriated Maleficent swears revenge on Stefan; she gets her chance when the prince becomes king and has his first child, a daughter named Aurora-- as Sleeping Beauty fans will remember, Maleficent curses her to fall into a death-like sleep after pricking her finger on a spinning wheel on her 16th birthday.

Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2 (PG; 94 minutes): Flint Lockwood is invited to join the Live Corp Company, and use his gift for invention for the good of mankind. Just as young Flint prepares to go to work for his hero Chester V, the young genius learns that his water-to-food machine is not only still functional, but it's also started cross-breeding animals with food. Now, in order to prevent a growing army of "foodimals" from escaping isolation on an island and wreaking havoc on the mainland, Flint and his loyal group of friends will have to do battle with such delicious, but deadly, hybrids as the ferocious tacodiles, slithering apple pie-thons, and vine-swinging shrimpanzees.
