Little Bee by Chris Cleave

Little Bee, a young Nigerian refugee, has just been released from the British immigration detention center where she has been held under horrific conditions for the past two years, after narrowly escaping a traumatic fate in her homeland of Nigeria. Alone in a foreign country, without a family member, friend, or pound to call her own, she seeks out the only English person she knows. Sarah is a posh young mother and magazine editor with whom Little Bee shares a dark and tumultuous past.

They first met on a beach in Nigeria, where Sarah was vacationing with her husband, Andrew, in an effort to save their marriage after an affair, and their brief encounter has haunted each woman for two years. Now together, they face a disturbing past and an uncertain future with the help of Sarah’s four-year-old son, Charlie, who refuses to take off his Batman costume. A sense of humor and an unflinching moral compass allow each woman, and the reader, to believe that even in the face of unspeakable odds, humanity can prevail.

3rd Monday night of every month

Our fiction book discussion is up and running again. We have a great new group ready and willing to try reading something different from what they would usually read.

Books can be picked up at the meeting or at the circualtion desk.

Amazonia by James Rollins

The Rand scientific expedition entered the lush wilderness of the Amazon and never returned. Years later, one of its members has stumbled out of the world's most inhospitable rainforest, a former Special Forces soldier, scarred, mutilated, terrified, and mere hours from death, who went in with one arm missing . . . and came out with both intact.

Unable to comprehend this inexplicable event, the government sends Nathan Rand into this impenetrable secret world of undreamed-of perils, to follow the trail of his vanished father toward mysteries that must be solved at any cost. But the nightmare that is awaiting Nate and his team of scientists and seasoned U.S. Rangers dwarfs any danger they anticipated . . . an ancient, unspoken terror--a power beyond human imagining that can forever alter the world beyond the dark, lethal confines of . . .

Contact: Lisa Bower Courtney   860-582-3121   lbcourtney@biblio.org

Local author Steve Courtney will be discussing his latest book.

Mark Twain did more than just live in Hartford from 1871 to 1891, he loved the city and its doings, and liked to tweak the locals and their ways.

For example: Shown dozens of wooden objects supposedly made from the Charter Oak, he told visitors that a quarter-mile-long covered bridge across the Connecticut River was made from that tree. And he thought it just perfect that while in one part of town they made Colt revolvers to dispatch people, in another part of town the life insurance companies helped families cash in on their losses.

These stories, along with the exciting tale of the Clemens family's life in their Hartford house and the city of that era, will be shared by the author, Steve  Courtney is the author of Mark Twain's Hartford, just published by which tells the tale of the author and his city in stunning images drawn from the rarely opened archives of the Mark Twain House & Museum.
