Bob Backlund will be here to discuss his career and his new book.

Bob Backlund is a former WWE world champion and world tag team champion. He was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame in 2013 and has written an autobiography, “The All-American Boy: Lessons and Stories on Life from Wrestling Legend Bob Backlund.

Backlund wrote that he began life as a poor farm boy in the little village of Princeton, Minn. He was a below-average student with a lackluster work ethic and a bad attitude, who hung with the wrong crowd and made a lot of bad choices. He was a kid whose life was headed for disaster until a local coach took interest in him, suggested he take up amateur wrestling, and offered to work with him if he promised to stay out of trouble.

Backlund excelled in amateur wrestling and wrestled at North Dakota State University. While working out at the YMCA in Fargo, N.D., Backlund met professional wrestler “Superstar” Billy Graham. At Graham’s suggestion, Backlund pursued a professional career. He made his debut in the World Wide Wrestling Federation (predecessor of today’s WWE) in 1977 and quickly became a fan favorite.

Autographed copies of his book will be available for purchase. Registration requested and refreshments served.

Participants follow clues to find hidden letterboxes which include a journal and stamp (sometimes hand-carved, other times store bought). They then take the stamp in the letterbox and stamp it into their personal journal and stamp their personal stamp into the letterbox's logbook. These letterboxes can be found in parks, on hikes, and in cities around the world. Atlasquest.org is one place to discover more.

The program will include creating your own stamp and also finding a few letterboxes here in the library!

Books can be picked up at the meeting or at the circualtion desk.

Last Bus to Wisdom: A Novel by Ivan Doig

The final novel from a great American storyteller.
Donal Cameron is being raised by his grandmother, the cook at the legendary Double W ranch in Ivan Doig’s beloved Two Medicine Country of the Montana Rockies, a landscape that gives full rein to an eleven-year-old’s imagination. But when Gram has to have surgery for “female trouble” in the summer of 1951, all she can think to do is to ship Donal off to her sister in faraway Manitowoc, Wisconsin. There Donal is in for a rude surprise: Aunt Kate–bossy, opinionated, argumentative, and tyrannical—is nothing like her sister. She henpecks her good-natured husband, Herman the German, and Donal can’t seem to get on her good side either. After one contretemps too many, Kate packs him back to the authorities in Montana on the next Greyhound. But as it turns out, Donal isn’t traveling solo: Herman the German has decided to fly the coop with him. In the immortal American tradition, the pair light out for the territory together, meeting a classic Doigian ensemble of characters and having rollicking misadventures along the way.

3rd Monday night of every month

Our fiction book discussion is up and running again. We have a great new group ready and willing to try reading something different from what they would usually read.

Books can be picked up at the meeting or at the circualtion desk.

The Nightingale by Kristin Hannah

In love we find out who we want to be. In war we find out who we are.

FRANCE, 1939

In the quiet village of Carriveau, Vianne Mauriac says goodbye to her husband, Antoine, as he heads for the Front. She doesn't believe that the Nazis will invade France … but invade they do, in droves of marching soldiers, in caravans of trucks and tanks, in planes that fill the skies and drop bombs upon the innocent. When a German captain requisitions Vianne's home, she and her daughter must live with the enemy or lose everything. Without food or money or hope, as danger escalates all around them, she is forced to make one impossible choice after another to keep her family alive.

Vianne's sister, Isabelle, is a rebellious eighteen-year-old girl, searching for purpose with all the reckless passion of youth. While thousands of Parisians march into the unknown terrors of war, she meets Gäetan, a partisan who believes the French can fight the Nazis from within France, and she falls in love as only the young can … completely. But when he betrays her, Isabelle joins the Resistance and never looks back, risking her life time and again to save others.

With courage, grace and powerful insight, bestselling author Kristin Hannah captures the epic panorama of WWII and illuminates an intimate part of history seldom seen: the women's war. The Nightingale tells the stories of two sisters, separated by years and experience, by ideals, passion and circumstance, each embarking on her own dangerous path toward survival, love, and freedom in German-occupied, war-torn France--a heartbreakingly beautiful novel that celebrates the resilience of the human spirit and the durability of women. It is a novel for everyone, a novel for a lifetime.

The Rosie Project  (Don Tillman #1) by Graeme Simsion

The international bestselling romantic comedy “bursting with warmth, emotional depth, and…humor,” (Entertainment Weekly) featuring the oddly charming, socially challenged genetics professor, Don, as he seeks true love.

The art of love is never a science: Meet Don Tillman, a brilliant yet socially inept professor of genetics, who’s decided it’s time he found a wife. In the orderly, evidence-based manner with which Don approaches all things, he designs the Wife Project to find his perfect partner: a sixteen-page, scientifically valid survey to filter out the drinkers, the smokers, the late arrivers.

Rosie Jarman possesses all these qualities. Don easily disqualifies her as a candidate for The Wife Project (even if she is “quite intelligent for a barmaid”). But Don is intrigued by Rosie’s own quest to identify her biological father. When an unlikely relationship develops as they collaborate on The Father Project, Don is forced to confront the spontaneous whirlwind that is Rosie?and the realization that, despite your best scientific efforts, you don’t find love, it finds you.

Practical Magic by Alice Hoffman

For more than two hundred years, the Owens women had been blamed for everything that went wrong in their Massachusetts town. And Gillian and Sally endured that fate as well; as children, the sisters were outsiders. Their elderly aunts almost seemed to encourage the whispers of witchery, but all Gillian and Sally wanted was to escape. One would do so by marrying, the other by running away. But the bonds they shared brought them back-almost as if by magic...

Join us for a history lesson you won't soon forget. Northeast Paranormal Investigations Society (NPIS) will share entertaining historical information along with archival photos associated with locations the team has investigated throughout the Northeast region of the U.S. and evidence of paranormal activity they captured to support the history of those locations and their once living occupants. It is a unique program sure to entertain both history and paranormal enthusiasts alike. NPIS's goal since 2009 is to document history long after history has been made. ."

See footage captured from American Revolution spy Nathan Hale's home and learn why he is considered Connecticut's official hero despite failing at his duties. Hear a Confederate soldier speak a full sentence from within the Farnsworth House, the home which is said the fatal bullet was shot from which killed Jennie Wade, the only civilian casualty of the battle at Gettysburg. See images of an apparition of a light keeper peering out the window of Sheffield Island Lighthouse and then hear his deceased daughter speak and learn why she was afraid of him in life as well as in the afterlife. Witness a tavern keeper offer a drink at what was once the busy Phelps Tavern...a tavern that has been closed for 167 years.

There is much, much more history to uncover through fascinating paranormal evidence consisting of photos, audio and video in this program.
