Come learn about the resources available at the library.

Did you know that we have a local history room where we have Terryville High Yearbooks back to the 1920’s? There are lots of other treasures to see in the Terryville/Plymouth Room.

Learn how to use the computerized card catalog, learn how to request a book, movie, T.V. series or audiobook from another library that will be delivered to our library. Learn about the free adult programs on a variety of subjects that we offer monthly.

And when we have had enough of learning we will enjoy a catered lunch.

Before I go to Sleep by  S.J. Watson

S. J. Watson makes his powerful debut with this  compelling, fast-paced  psychological thriller, reminiscent of Shutter Island and        Memento, in which an amnesiac who, following a mysterious accident, cannot remember her past or form new memories, desperately tries to uncover the truth about who she is—and who she can trust.

Practical Magic by Alice Hoffman

For more than two hundred years, the Owens women had been blamed for everything that went wrong in their Massachusetts town. And Gillian and Sally endured that fate as well; as children, the sisters were outsiders. Their elderly aunts almost seemed to encourage the whispers of witchery, but all Gillian and Sally wanted was to escape. One would do so by marrying, the other by running away. But the bonds they shared brought them back-almost as if by magic...

Join us for a history lesson you won't soon forget. Northeast Paranormal Investigations Society (NPIS) will share entertaining historical information along with archival photos associated with locations the team has investigated throughout the Northeast region of the U.S. and evidence of paranormal activity they captured to support the history of those locations and their once living occupants. It is a unique program sure to entertain both history and paranormal enthusiasts alike. NPIS's goal since 2009 is to document history long after history has been made. ."

See footage captured from American Revolution spy Nathan Hale's home and learn why he is considered Connecticut's official hero despite failing at his duties. Hear a Confederate soldier speak a full sentence from within the Farnsworth House, the home which is said the fatal bullet was shot from which killed Jennie Wade, the only civilian casualty of the battle at Gettysburg. See images of an apparition of a light keeper peering out the window of Sheffield Island Lighthouse and then hear his deceased daughter speak and learn why she was afraid of him in life as well as in the afterlife. Witness a tavern keeper offer a drink at what was once the busy Phelps Tavern...a tavern that has been closed for 167 years.

There is much, much more history to uncover through fascinating paranormal evidence consisting of photos, audio and video in this program.

Contact: Lisa Bower Courtney   860-583-4467   lbcourtney@biblio.org

Ms. Barrett provides this humorous, insightful glimpse into the life of Reckless, the only horse to ever to achieve the rank of Marine Corps sergeant. Reckless, discovered on a South Korean race track, became an invaluable partner during the height of the Korean War. Braving enemy fire, rough terrain, and with heavy cargo on her back, Reckless delivered much needed materials and equipment to her fellow Marines. A Jeju pony, not a Mongolian mare, as others have described her, Reckless’ strength, bravery, and perseverance made an enormous difference and a lasting impact on all those who served with her.

Though small in stature, Reckless had a big personality and an even larger appetite (beer, cupcakes, cookies, and mess hall food included) that provided emotional as well as physical support to her buddies throughout her nine months in combat. She more than earned her trip to the States when her tour was over, retiring at Camp Pendleton where she received the adoration and care she so richly deserved. Part soldier, part mascot, she proudly served alongside her Marines, later earning two Purple Hearts for her unwavering courage under fire.

3rd Monday night of every month

Our fiction book discussion is up and running again. We have a great new group ready and willing to try reading something different from what they would usually read.

Books can be picked up at the meeting or at the circualtion desk.

Sarah's Key by  Tatiana de Rosnay

Paris, July 1942: Sarah, a ten year-old girl, is brutally arrested with her family by the French police in the Vel’ d’Hiv’ roundup, but not before she locks her younger brother in a cupboard in the family's apartment, thinking that she will be back within a few hours.

Paris, May 2002: On Vel’ d’Hiv’s 60th anniversary, journalist Julia Jarmond is asked to write an article about this black day in France's past. Through her contemporary investigation, she stumbles onto a trail of long-hidden family secrets that connect her to Sarah. Julia finds herself compelled to retrace the girl's ordeal, from that terrible term in the Vel d'Hiv', to the camps, and beyond. As she probes into Sarah's past, she begins to question her own place in France, and to reevaluate her marriage and her life.

Tatiana de Rosnay offers us a brilliantly subtle, compelling portrait of France under occupation and reveals the taboos and silence that surround this painful episode.

Contact: Lisa Bower Courtney   860-583-4467   lbcourtney@biblio.org

Judy Giguere, Plymouth Town Historian, will be here to talk about the ground penetrating radar study that was done at the Old Plymouth Burying Ground. It was a cooperative effort of volunteers, state and federal agencies.  The ground penetrating radar study is part of the on-going research into the early settlement of Plymouth and the lives of the early settlers.  It is non-invasive as it uses reflected radar pulses to locate below ground disturbances.
