3rd Monday night of every month

Our fiction book discussion is up and running again. We have a great new group ready and willing to try reading something different from what they would usually read.

Books can be picked up at the meeting or at the circualtion desk.

The Rosie Project  (Don Tillman #1) by Graeme Simsion

The international bestselling romantic comedy “bursting with warmth, emotional depth, and…humor,” (Entertainment Weekly) featuring the oddly charming, socially challenged genetics professor, Don, as he seeks true love.

The art of love is never a science: Meet Don Tillman, a brilliant yet socially inept professor of genetics, who’s decided it’s time he found a wife. In the orderly, evidence-based manner with which Don approaches all things, he designs the Wife Project to find his perfect partner: a sixteen-page, scientifically valid survey to filter out the drinkers, the smokers, the late arrivers.

Rosie Jarman possesses all these qualities. Don easily disqualifies her as a candidate for The Wife Project (even if she is “quite intelligent for a barmaid”). But Don is intrigued by Rosie’s own quest to identify her biological father. When an unlikely relationship develops as they collaborate on The Father Project, Don is forced to confront the spontaneous whirlwind that is Rosie?and the realization that, despite your best scientific efforts, you don’t find love, it finds you.

Before I go to Sleep by  S.J. Watson

S. J. Watson makes his powerful debut with this  compelling, fast-paced  psychological thriller, reminiscent of Shutter Island and        Memento, in which an amnesiac who, following a mysterious accident, cannot remember her past or form new memories, desperately tries to uncover the truth about who she is—and who she can trust.

Practical Magic by Alice Hoffman

For more than two hundred years, the Owens women had been blamed for everything that went wrong in their Massachusetts town. And Gillian and Sally endured that fate as well; as children, the sisters were outsiders. Their elderly aunts almost seemed to encourage the whispers of witchery, but all Gillian and Sally wanted was to escape. One would do so by marrying, the other by running away. But the bonds they shared brought them back-almost as if by magic...

Join us for a history lesson you won't soon forget. Northeast Paranormal Investigations Society (NPIS) will share entertaining historical information along with archival photos associated with locations the team has investigated throughout the Northeast region of the U.S. and evidence of paranormal activity they captured to support the history of those locations and their once living occupants. It is a unique program sure to entertain both history and paranormal enthusiasts alike. NPIS's goal since 2009 is to document history long after history has been made. ."

See footage captured from American Revolution spy Nathan Hale's home and learn why he is considered Connecticut's official hero despite failing at his duties. Hear a Confederate soldier speak a full sentence from within the Farnsworth House, the home which is said the fatal bullet was shot from which killed Jennie Wade, the only civilian casualty of the battle at Gettysburg. See images of an apparition of a light keeper peering out the window of Sheffield Island Lighthouse and then hear his deceased daughter speak and learn why she was afraid of him in life as well as in the afterlife. Witness a tavern keeper offer a drink at what was once the busy Phelps Tavern...a tavern that has been closed for 167 years.

There is much, much more history to uncover through fascinating paranormal evidence consisting of photos, audio and video in this program.

Sarah's Key by  Tatiana de Rosnay

Paris, July 1942: Sarah, a ten year-old girl, is brutally arrested with her family by the French police in the Vel’ d’Hiv’ roundup, but not before she locks her younger brother in a cupboard in the family's apartment, thinking that she will be back within a few hours.

Paris, May 2002: On Vel’ d’Hiv’s 60th anniversary, journalist Julia Jarmond is asked to write an article about this black day in France's past. Through her contemporary investigation, she stumbles onto a trail of long-hidden family secrets that connect her to Sarah. Julia finds herself compelled to retrace the girl's ordeal, from that terrible term in the Vel d'Hiv', to the camps, and beyond. As she probes into Sarah's past, she begins to question her own place in France, and to reevaluate her marriage and her life.

Tatiana de Rosnay offers us a brilliantly subtle, compelling portrait of France under occupation and reveals the taboos and silence that surround this painful episode.
