Come join us to find out all about letterboxing in this all ages family event. What is letterboxing? Letterboxing is "treasure hunting." Participants follow clues to find hidden letterboxes, which include a journal and stamp (sometimes hand carved, other times store bought). They then take the stamp in the letterbox and stamp it into their personal journal and stamp their personal stamp into the letterbox's logbook. These letterboxes can be found in parks, on hikes, and in cities around the world. Atlastquest.org is one place to discover more.

This program will include creating your own stamp and also finding a few letterboxes here in the library!

Registration is required.

3rd Monday night of every month

Our fiction book discussion is up and running again. We have a great new group ready and willing to try reading something different from what they would usually read.

Books can be picked up at the meeting or at the circualtion desk.

A Thousand Splendid Suns – Khaled Hosseini

After 103 weeks on the New York Times bestseller list and with four million copies of The Kite Runner shipped, Khaled Hosseini returns with a beautiful, riveting, and haunting novel that confirms his place as one of the most important literary writers today.

Propelled by the same superb instinct for storytelling that made The Kite Runner a beloved classic, A Thousand Splendid Suns is at once an incredible chronicle of thirty years of Afghan history and a deeply moving story of family, friendship, faith, and the salvation to be found in love.

Born a generation apart and with very different ideas about love and family, Mariam and Laila are two women brought jarringly together by war, by loss and by fate. As they endure the ever escalating dangers around them-in their home as well as in the streets of Kabul-they come to form a bond that makes them both sisters and mother-daughter to each other, and that will ultimately alter the course not just of their own lives but of the next generation. With heart-wrenching power and suspense, Hosseini shows how a woman's love for her family can move her to shocking and heroic acts of self-sacrifice, and that in the end it is love, or even the memory of love, that is often the key to survival.

A stunning accomplishment, A Thousand Splendid Suns is a haunting, heartbreaking, compelling story of an unforgiving time, an unlikely friendship, and an indestructible love.

Books can be picked up at the meeting or at the circualtion desk.

The Island of Dr. Moreau by H.G. Wells

Considered one of the fathers of science fiction, H. G. Wells (1866–1946) brought enormous inventiveness and an underlying social vision and moral concern to his strange tales and bizarre imaginings. A student of Darwinian biology, he formed his romantic conceptions of the scientific world at an early age.
This novel, one of his first forays into the science fiction genre, concerns a mad surgeon-turned-vivisectionist who, in his laboratory on a remote island, performs ghoulish experiments in an attempt to transform animals into men, with monstrous results. It is one of Wells' earliest and most sinister personifications of the scientific quest to control and manipulate the natural world, and, ultimately, human nature itself.
First published in 1896, The Island of Dr. Moreau has intrigued and horrified readers for generations.

Wildlife photographer Peter Christoph presents a narrated slideshow, sharing both his award-winning images and his photographic secrets as he brings you inside a typical New England swamp. Peter provides an intimate look into the many varieties of birds that inhabit our swamps, including ospreys and herons, shorebirds, woodpeckers, and other cavity dwellers. Sloshing and crawling through the swamp so you don't have to, Peter captures the bird's many activities including building the nest, feeding their young, and catching their prey. You'll almost want to bring your own wading boots and bug spray for protection as you sit down to watch this captivating presentation.

Mean Streak by Sandra Brown

Dr. Emory Charbonneau, a pediatrician and marathon runner, disappears on a mountain road in North Carolina. By the time her husband Jeff, miffed over a recent argument, reports her missing, the trail has grown cold. Literally. Fog and ice encapsulate the mountainous wilderness and paralyze the search for her.

While police suspect Jeff of "instant divorce," Emory, suffering from an unexplained head injury, regains consciousness and finds herself the captive of a man whose violent past is so dark that he won't even tell her his name. She's determined to escape him, and willing to take any risks necessary to survive.

Unexpectedly, however, the two have a dangerous encounter with people who adhere to a code of justice all their own. At the center of the dispute is a desperate young woman whom Emory can't turn her back on, even if it means breaking the law. Wrong becomes right at the hands of the man who strikes fear, but also sparks passion.

As her husband's deception is revealed, and the FBI closes in on her captor, Emory begins to wonder if the man with no name is, in fact, her rescuer from those who wish her dead - and from heartbreak.

Combining the nail-biting suspense and potent storytelling that has made Sandra Brown one of the world's best loved authors, MEAN STREAK is a wildly compelling novel about love, deceit, and the choices we must make in order to survive.

As late as the 1830s, Connecticut clockmakers' lives were shaped not only by the state's Puritan origins, but also by an archaic legal system that closely mirrored English common law. Join speaker Mary Jane Dapkus to hear some of the stories that never made it into the local histories and family genealogies, yet contribute much to an understanding of their work. Formerly curator of the American Clock & Watch Museum of Bristol, CT, Mary Jane is a historical researcher, writer, editor, and reviewer. Currently she is working on a book about early 19th century shelf clock makers of the villages of Farmington and Unionville, CT.
