Enjoy a 60-minute concert with Two Old Friends -- Emery Hutchins and Jim Prendergast -- who play and sing a unique combination of CeItic music and American country music. Original melodies, songs and stories by the artists are part of a performance that tells the story in music of loss and renewal, despair and hope, anguish and joy that is the story of the Irish and of every other group of people who have traveled to America -- and within America. It is a performance that is informative and entertaining and above all, seeks to show that to understand the music of a culture is to understand the heart of a culture. Hutch and Jim will be singing and playing the banjo, guitar, mandolin, concertina, bodran and the octave mandolin. Hutch is a well-known performer of a variety of different styles of acoustic music, ranging from traditional Irish tunes to vintage American country music songs. Jim worked for thirty years in the recording studios and orchestra pits of Nashville. He now resides in New Hampshire and is an active participant in New England’s thriving Celtic/Folk music scene. Munchkins and coffee will be served.

The library's Evening Book Group is reading After You by Jojo Moyes this month.  Books and discussion guides will be available at the Front Desk by the end of March. New readers are always welcome!

About the Book: This unexpected sequel to Moyes's Me Before You reveals what happened to Louisa Clark after that book's heart-wrenching finale. Jojo Moyes gives us two families, as real as our own, whose joys and sorrows will touch you deeply, and where both changes and surprises await. After You is quintessential Jojo Moyes—a novel that will make you laugh, cry, and rejoice at being back in the world she creates. Here she does what few novelists can do—revisits beloved characters and takes them to places neither they nor we ever expected.

misc_none 7:00 PM  -  8:30 PM AUTHOR VISIT: An Irish Immigrant Story with Ellen Alden Remind Me about this Event   Tell a Friend
    Contact: Robert Hayes   978-640-4490 x 205   rhayes@tewksburypl.org

Author Ellen B. Alden will discuss her new book, Yours Faithfully, Florence Burke: An Irish Immigrant Story.

About The Book: Irish immigrant Florence Burke has lived in Massachusetts for more than a decade but he's still a tenant farmer and his family lives in near-poverty. He came to America for a better life, but finds his adoptive country less than hospitable. Florence recognizes that owning land is the path to prosperity, but the bank won't grant him a loan and he's running out of options. An opportunity arises that could make his dreams come true, but it involves great personal risk to both himself and his family. He recalls the gamble he took when he fled the Potato Famine in Ireland, and wonders if he could make a gamble on his life one more time? Will his wife and children understand his decision to join the war?

Yours Faithfully, Florence Burke is based on nineteen original letters from my great, great grandfather to his wife and children. It is a story of one Irish immigrant in a million struggling to make it in America at a time when the nation is divided.

About The Author: Ellen B. Alden is an author who began the journey of writing after discovering an old leather box filled with nineteen Civil War letters in her attic. The letters were written from her Irish immigrant great, great grandfather, to his wife and children at home in Western Massachusetts. Ever since that day, Ellen has worked tirelessly to learn their story and bring it to life through this novel. She traveled to Ireland several times to meet with a local historian, to explore her ancestry and to research the Great Potato Famine. Ellen previously worked as an elementary school teacher and wine consultant. She resides in Andover, MA with her husband and three children.

About The Event: Q&A and book selling and signing after the talk for those interested. The event is sponsored by the Friends of the Tewksbury Public Library. Rescheduled from March 14.

The library's Evening Book Group is reading Kitchens of the Great Midwest by Jojo Moyes this month.  Books and discussion guides will be available at the Front Desk by the end of April. New readers are always welcome!

About the Book:

The story of a young woman with a once-in-a-generation palate who becomes the iconic chef behind the country’s most coveted dinner reservation. When Lars Thorvald’s wife, Cynthia, falls in love with wine—and a dashing sommelier—he’s left to raise their baby, Eva, on his own. He’s determined to pass on his love of food to his daughter—starting with pureed pork shoulder. As Eva grows, she finds her solace and salvation in the flavors of her native Minnesota. From Scandinavian lutefisk to hydroponic chocolate habaneros, each ingredient represents one part of Eva’s journey as she becomes the star chef behind a legendary and secretive pop-up supper club, culminating in an opulent and emotional feast that’s a testament to her spirit and resilience.
