    Contact: Robert Hayes   978-640-4490 x 205   rhayes@mvlc.org

Join Claudia Thompson, Founder and President of Grow Native Massachusetts, to learn how to garden with native plants and why they're important.  Native plants are increasingly recognized as important to our gardens and landscapes, but why?  Thompson will give an overview on their essential role in the ecosystem health - starting with the concept of co-evolution between animals and plants, and ending with a tour of her 7,000 square foot garden in Cambridge.  She'll explain the differences among native, naturalized and invasive plants; and explore the food web that links plants to insects to birds, wildlife and humans.  Using her garden as a case study, learn about the essential principles for designing gardens that are places of both beauty and biodiversity.  By the end of the program, you will "get" why native plants are so important and understand what you can do in your own garden to make the world a better place!

Thompson is the President of Grow Native Massachusetts, an organization that she founded in 2010 as the culmination of an extensive career in the environmental sector. In recent decades, she served as the Director of Education for the Appalachian Mountain Club, Director of Drumlin Farm for Mass Audubon, and worked for several other environmental organizations. She was a board member for the New England Wild Flower Society from 1996 to 2005.  Q&A after the presentation.  Limited to 50 seats.  Sponsored by the Friends of the Library.

    Contact: Rachel Steele   978-640-4490   rsteele@mvlc.org

This month, the Book Club will be discussing The Light Between The Oceans by ML Stedman.  Copies and discussion guides are available at the Front Desk beginning 3/25.  No registration is necessary.  New members are always welcome!  Sponsored by the Friends of the Library.

About The Book: After four harrowing years on the Western Front, Tom Sherbourne returns to Australia and takes a job as the lighthouse keeper on Janus Rock, nearly half a day's journey from the coast.  To this isolated island, where the supply boat comes once a season and shore leaves are granted every other year at best, Tom brings a young, bold, and loving wife, Isabel.  Years later, after two miscarriages and one stillbirth, the grieving Isabel hears a baby's cries on the wind.  A boat has washed up onshore carrying a dead man and a living baby.  Tom, whose records as a lighthouse keeper are meticulous and whose moral principles have withstood a horrific war, wants to report the man and infant immediately.  But Isabel has taken the tiny baby to her breast.  Against Tom's judgment, they claim her as their own and name her Lucy.  When she is two, Tom and Isabel return to the mainland and are reminded that there are other people in the world.  Their choice has devastated one of them.

nat_rose.GIF 7:00 PM  -  8:30 PM GARDENING: 'Gardening Is Murder:' Gardening From A Husband's Perspective with Neal Sanders Remind Me about this Event   Tell a Friend
    Contact: Robert Hayes   978-640-4490 x 205   rhayes@mvlc.org

Join author Neal Sanders for his hilarious presentation, "Gardening Is Murder: Gardening From A Husband's Perspective."  Why is much gardening information on the internet so awful?  Why is it impossible to do just one thing in the garden?  Why should you never compute the value of your labor when you garden?  These are the questions that keep Neal Sanders awake at night.  As the spouse of an avid gardener with no "real" responsibilities other than to dig holes and move rocks, Sanders has lots of time to observe gardeners and their foibles.  "Gardening Is Murder" weaves those observations into an illustrated talk that is funny, informative and poignant.  Sanders is also the author of nine mysteries, several of which use garden club settings.  He write the popular "The Principal Undergardener" blog, which addresses gardening as a non-gardener who loves gardens.  He and his wife, Betty, maintain a two-acre garden in Medfield, which has been featured in the Wall Street Journal and the Garden Conservancy.  Q&A and book selling & signing after the presentation for those interested.  Limited to 50 seats.  Sponsored by the Friends of the Library.

Answering questions during job interviews can be the most challenging part of finding that next great opportunity.  Questions can vary by company, although there are common themes.  What are some of the typical questions hiring managers ask?  What is the best way to answer these questions?  Join Cheryl Landes who will bring a list of questions she has compiled from speaking with job seekers and from her own experience.  Cheryl and the group will review these questions, talk about possible answers and Cheryl will provide additional comments from her research. Attendees are also encouraged to bring their own "tough" questions. Cheryl Landes, a full-time freelance technical writer, founded Tabby Cat Communications in Seattle in 1995. She has worked in several industries: computer software, HVAC/energy savings, marine transportation, manufacturing, retail, and the trade press. She specializes as a findability strategist, helping businesses to organize content so that it flows logically and to make content easier to retrieve online and in print.  Cheryl has given many presentations and workshops about technical communication and self-promotion throughout the United States and Canada.  There will be time for networking after the presentation.  Limited to 25 seats.  Sponsored by the Friends of the Library.

For ages 6  to 12.
SORRY, NO CHILDREN UNDER AGE 6 will be admitted to this program. Children must be able to stay quiet and still for the entire session so preschoolers, toddlers and infants will not be allowed.
Meet 5 different birds of prey with Jim Parks from Wingmasters! Jim will bring out 5 birds individually and tell their stories, interesting facts, and more. You'll be fascinated by this fantastic presentation and get a glimpse into birds you can see in the sky every day!
Birds of prey are also known as raptors, and they are hunting birds characterized by hooked beaks and powerful grabbing feet armed with sharp talons (the word raptor comes from a Latin word that means "to seize"). Raptors can also boast the best eyesight and the sharpest hearing in the animal kingdom. Raptors include eagles, hawks, falcons and owls, and our presentation, which incorporates five live birds, gives an overview of these different categories.
A TICKET IS REQUIRED for admittance to this program. Every "body" coming into the room needs a ticket. Pick up FREE tickets at the Children's desk beginning on June 29th. Limit of 6 tickets per person, first come, first served. Tickets MAY NOT be held via phone or email.
