About the Book:  The story of a young woman with a once-in-a-generation palate who becomes the iconic chef behind the country’s most coveted dinner reservation. When Lars Thorvald’s wife, Cynthia, falls in love with wine—and a dashing sommelier—he’s left to raise their baby, Eva, on his own. He’s determined to pass on his love of food to his daughter—starting with pureed pork shoulder. As Eva grows, she finds her solace and salvation in the flavors of her native Minnesota. From Scandinavian lutefisk to hydroponic chocolate habaneros, each ingredient represents one part of Eva’s journey as she becomes the star chef behind a legendary and secretive pop-up supper club, culminating in an opulent and emotional feast that’s a testament to her spirit and resilience.

Enjoy a 60-minute concert with Too Human, performing jazz standards from the Great American Songbook, along with jazzy “bluesy” originals.  They will be accompanied by Keala Kaumaheiwa on upright bass. Whether performing breezy, jazzy, toe tapping swing; a bluesy, heartfelt ballad; or a familiar standard, Too Human will move you with their music. With vocals, guitar, percussion and upright bass, they have a jazzy / bluesy feel with a lot of heart. Their original songs will touch you in so many ways. And the standards take on a life of their own with a fresh interpretation. Ellen's earthy voice combines perfectly with Roger's unusual percussion style and sweet vocals. Their songs have been recorded by a broad spectrum of artists, including Cher. Munchkins and coffee will be served. This program is sponsored, in part, by the Tewksbury Cultural Council, a local agency, which is supported by the Massachusetts Cultural Council, a state agency.

Author Jasmine Grace Marino will discuss her new book, The Diary of Jasmine Grace: Trafficked. Recovered. Redeemed.

About The Book: From dating a man who would eventually sell her body, to finding redemption in the back seat of a car, Jasmine reveals the strengths, vulnerabilities and processes that changed her. She opens a door into her life as a prostitute, sharing her diary and the struggles that eventually landed her a seat in a 12-step program, a job in the anti-trafficking movement and a place in a community church. Speaking candidly about her years as a prostitute and heroin addict, Jasmine discusses how faith influenced her, and she sheds light on the road to recovery, relapse and redemption. Learn about the manipulation and mental programming in commercial sex; the role of the brain in addictive behaviors; and recovery obstacles after exiting the sex trade.

About The Author: Jasmine Grace Marino advises on issues such as safe homes, survivor support and peer mentorship. Silent survivors, justice seekers and direct service providers are talking about Jasmine’s story of survival, faith and victory. People who were previously uneducated about human trafficking have chosen to support her efforts as a modern-day abolitionist. She has spoken on panels at the U.S Commission on Civil Rights in New Hampshire and at the United Nations.

    Contact: Robert Hayes   978-640-4490 x 205   rhayes@tewksburypl.org

Author Nina Sankovitch will discuss her new book, The Lowells of Massachusetts: An American Family, with a focus on Francis Cabot Lowell, for whom neighboring Lowell was named after.

About The Book: The Lowells of Massachusetts were a remarkable family. They were settlers in the New World in the 1600s, revolutionaries creating a new nation in the 1700s, merchants and manufacturers building prosperity in the 1800s, and scientists and artists flourishing in the 1900s. For the first time, Nina Sankovitch tells the story of this fascinating and powerful dynasty in The Lowells of Massachusetts.

Though not without scoundrels and certainly no strangers to controversy , the family boasted some of the most astonishing individuals in America’s history, including Francis Cabot Lowell, manufacturer and, some say, founder of the Industrial Revolution in the US. The Lowells realized the promise of America as the land of opportunity by uniting Puritan values of hard work, community service, and individual responsibility with a deep-seated optimism that became a well-known family trait. Long before the Kennedys put their stamp on Massachusetts, the Lowells claimed the bedrock.

About The Author: Nina Sankovitch is the author of Tolstoy and the Purple Chair and Signed, Sealed, Delivered: Celebrating the Joys of Letter Writing. She was born in Evanston, Illinois and is a graduate of Evanston Township High School, Tufts University, and Harvard Law School. She currently lives in Connecticut.

About The Event: After the presentation, there will be time for a Q&A.  Following the Q&A, there will be a book selling and signing for those interested.  The event is sponsored by the Friends of the Tewksbury Public Library.

Participants will enjoy producing their own still life pastel painting to take home with them. Limited to 25 seats.

About The Instructor: Gregory Maichack is a seasoned pro at teaching pastel techniques, as recognized by the Museum of Fine Arts (MFA) Boston; Massachusetts Cultural Council (MCC), and hundreds of libraries and local cultural councils. Maichack demonstrates how beginners to accomplished artists can paint a still life while applying techniques applied by masters such as van Gogh, O’Keeffe, Monet & Maichack himself.

This event supported by a grant from the Tewksbury Cultural Council, a local agency which is supported by the Massachusetts Cultural Council, a state agency.

The library's Evening Book Group is reading The Aviator's Wife by Melanie Benjamin this month.  Books and discussion guides will be available at the Front Desk by the end of May. New readers are always welcome!

About the Book:  For much of her life, Anne Morrow, the shy daughter of the U.S. ambassador to Mexico, has stood in the shadows of those around her, including her millionaire father and vibrant older sister, who often steals the spotlight. Then Anne, a college senior with hidden literary aspirations, travels to Mexico City to spend Christmas with her family. There she meets Colonel Charles Lindbergh, fresh off his celebrated 1927 solo flight across the Atlantic. Enthralled by Charles’s assurance and fame, Anne is certain the celebrated aviator has scarcely noticed her. But she is wrong. Charles sees in Anne a kindred spirit, a fellow adventurer, and her world will be changed forever. The two marry in a headline-making wedding. Hounded by adoring crowds and hunted by an insatiable press, Charles shields himself and his new bride from prying eyes, leaving Anne to feel her life falling back into the shadows. In the years that follow, despite her own major achievements—she becomes the first licensed female glider pilot in the United States—Anne is viewed merely as the aviator’s wife. The fairy-tale life she once longed for will bring heartbreak and hardships, ultimately pushing her to reconcile her need for love and her desire for independence, and to embrace, at last, life’s infinite possibilities for change and happiness. The library's Evening Book Group is reading Z: A Novel of Zelda Fitzgerald, by Therese Fowler this month.  Books and discussion guides will be available at the Front Desk by the end of June. New readers are always welcome!

About the Book:  When beautiful, reckless Southern belle Zelda Sayre meets F. Scott Fitzgerald at a country club dance in 1918, she is seventeen years old and he is a young army lieutenant stationed in Alabama. Before long, the "ungettable" Zelda has fallen for him despite his unsuitability: Scott isn't wealthy or prominent or even a Southerner, and keeps insisting, absurdly, that his writing will bring him both fortune and fame. Her father is deeply unimpressed. But after Scott sells his first novel, This Side of Paradise, to Scribner's, Zelda optimistically boards a train north, to marry him in the vestry of St. Patrick's Cathedral and take the rest as it comes. What comes, here at the dawn of the Jazz Age, is unimagined attention and success and celebrity that will make Scott and Zelda legends in their own time. Everyone wants to meet the dashing young author of the scandalous novel—and his witty, perhaps even more scandalous wife. Zelda bobs her hair, adopts daring new fashions, and revels in this wild new world. Each place they go becomes a playground: New York City, Long Island, Hollywood, Paris, and the French Riviera—where they join the endless party of the glamorous, sometimes doomed Lost Generation that includes Ernest Hemingway, Sara and Gerald Murphy, and Gertrude Stein. Everything seems new and possible. Troubles, at first, seem to fade like morning mist. But not even Jay Gatsby's parties go on forever. Who is Zelda, other than the wife of a famous—sometimes infamous—husband? How can she forge her own identity while fighting her demons and Scott's, too? With brilliant insight and imagination, Therese Anne Fowler brings us Zelda's irresistible story as she herself might have told it.

The library's Evening Book Group is reading Villa America, by Liza Klaussmann this month.  Books and discussion guides will be available at the Front Desk by the end of July. New readers are always welcome!

About the Book:

A dazzling novel set in the Cap D'Antibes based on the real-life inspirations for Fitzgerald's Tender is The Night. In this gorgeous, glamorous, and affecting novel, Liza Klaussmann does for Sara and Gerald Murphy what Paula McLain and Michael Cunningham did for Ernest Hemingway and Virginia Woolf in The Paris Wife and The Hours. Villa America was in fact a real house on the French Riviera that Sara and Gerald Murphy built to escape to in the 1920's. Members of a group of expat Americans, they were known for their fabulous parties and for making the Riviera into the glamorous place it is today. Their freewheeling days were filled with champagne and caviar, but these were people who kept secrets and who were, of course, heartbreakingly human. This is a stunning story about the Lost Generation, about a marriage, about a golden age which could not last.
