    Contact: Robert Hayes   978-640-4490 x 205   rhayes@mvlc.org

About The Program: Losing or changing a job can be one of the most stressful times in our lives. It is a time of change and uncertainty. For many, it is a time where we no longer have our daily routines or our social interactions that define who we are. We worry about our finances, financial future, job skills, and when we will find our next job all while reflecting on what is it that we want to do next.  In this interactive workshop, participants will discuss what keeps them up at night and how to relax so they can focus on what matters during this transitional time.

In this workshop, we will: (1) identify stress during a job search; (2) examine the health implications associated with chronic stress; (3) discuss daily stress management strategies to keep you focused and calm; and (4) practice techniques to alleviate negative self-talk that causes stress.

About The Speaker: Sarah Dubois is a Board Certified Integrative Nutrition Health Coach. Her practice focuses on creating a healthy, balanced life that incorporates all aspects of our lives such as relationships, careers, spirituality and health. Dubois received her training at the Institute for Integrative Nutrition in New York City and is certified by the American Association of Drugless Practitioners.

    Contact: Robert Hayes   978-640-4490 x 205   rhayes@mvlc.org

About The Program: Learn about the secret missions of the 23rd Headquarters Special Troops, the U.S. Army's tactical deception unit during World War II.

About The Book: In the summer of 1944, a handpicked group of young GIs landed in France to conduct a secret mission. Armed with truckloads of inflatable tanks, a massive collection of sound-effects records, and more than a few tricks up their sleeves, their job was to create a traveling road show of deception on the battlefields of Europe, with the German Army as their audience. From Normandy to the Rhine, the 1,100 men of the 23rd Headquarters Special Troops, known as the Ghost Army, conjured up phony convoys, phantom divisions, and make-believe headquarters to fool the enemy about the strength and location of American units. In between missions, the artists filled their duffle bags with drawings and paintings and dragged them across Europe. Every move they made was top secret and their story was hushed up for decades after the war's end.  Learn the full story of how a traveling road show of artists wielding imagination, paint and bravado saved thousands of American lives!

About The Author: Historian Rick Beyer is a best-selling author, award-winning filmmaker, and popular speaker. He wrote and directed the acclaimed documentary film, "The Ghost Army," which premiered on PBS in 2013.

lib_book_red 7:00 PM  -  8:30 PM We Are Market Basket with Grant Welker & Daniel Korschun Remind Me about this Event   Tell a Friend
    Contact: Robert Hayes   978-640-4490 x 205   rhayes@mvlc.org

About The Program: Relive last summer's Market Basket saga and the unlikely grassroots movement that saved a beloved business.

About The Book: What if a company was so treasured and trusted that people literally took to the streets - by the thousands - to save it? That company is Market Basket, a popular New England supermarket chain.

After long-time CEO Arthur T. Demoulas was ousted by his cousin Arthur S. Demoulas, the company's managers and rank-and-file workers struck back. Risking their own livelihoods to restore the job of their beloved boss they walked out, but they didn't walk far. At huge protest rallies, they were joined by local customers - leaving stores empty. Suppliers and vendors stopped deliveries - rending shelves bare. Politicians were forced to take sides. The national media and experts were stunned by the unprecedented defense of an executive. All openly challenged the Market Basket board of directors to make things right.

And, in the end, they prevailed.

With its arresting firsthand accounts from the streets and executive suites, "We Are Market Basket" is as inspiring as it is instructive. What is it about Market Basket and its leader that provokes such ferocious loyalty? How does a company spread across three states maintain a culture that embraces everyone - from cashier to customer - as family? Can a company really become an industry leader by prioritizing stakeholders over shareholders?

Set against a backdrop of bad blood and corporate greed, "We Are Market Basket" is, above all, a page-turner that chronicles the epic rise, fall and redemption of this iconic and uniquely American company.

About The Authors: Grant Welker covered the Market Basket story from the start as a reporter from The Lowell Sun. Daniel Korschun is an Associate Professor of Marketing at Drexel University's LeBow College of Business and a Fellow at the Center for Corporate Reputation Management.

About The Program: Job hunting is frustrating, stressful and, in today's economy, often agonizingly slow. Just getting a call back is difficult, much less getting an interview. Remember -- skills make you a commodity, value makes you unique. The talk also covers how you can avoid getting caught in the "black hole of resumes," how you can get into the mind of the interviewer, how you should deal with difficult questions, and key questions you should always ask.

    Contact: Robert Hayes   978-640-4490 x 205   rhayes@mvlc.org

About The Program: Relive Pleasure Island, an 80-acre theme park in Wakefield that was open from 1959 to 1969, with Bob McLaughlin, President of Friends of Pleasure Island and the author of four books on Pleasure Island and its sister park, Freedomland. This fun event will feature a musical slideshow, home movies, and more!  There will plenty of time for Q&A and story sharing.

About The Books: Billed as Boston's answer to Disneyland, Pleasure Island opened on June 22, 1959. William Hawkes, president of Childlife Magazine, and executives at Cabot, Cabot and Forbes collaborated with Marco Engineering of Los Angeles to build what was called the "Disneyland of the East." Pleasure Island rose from the wetlands off of Route 128 into an 80-acre theme park. Through photographs, Pleasure Island recalls memories of boat rides to Pirate Cove, searching for the great white whale, driving a Jenney car, getting dizzy in the Slanty Shanty, and taking a ride on Old Smoky. At Pleasure Island, children and children at heart entered into a world that traditional amusement parks could not provide, where character actors continually put on a show and the entire park was the stage.

About The Author: Bob McLaughlin is a Wakefield resident with an interest in local history. He has been researching Pleasure Island since 2000 and is cofounder of the Friends of Pleasure Island, which was established to collect images, film, oral history and artifacts related to the park.

lib_book_red 7:00 PM  -  8:30 PM An Evening with Linda Wertheimer, Author of 'Faith Ed' Remind Me about this Event   Tell a Friend
    Contact: Robert Hayes   978-640-4490 x 205   rhayes@mvlc.org

About The Program: Take an intimate cross-country look at the new debate over religion in the public schools.

About The Book: A suburban Boston school unwittingly started a firestorm of controversy over a sixth-grade field trip. The class was visiting a mosque to learn about world religions when a handful of boys, unnoticed by their teachers, joined the line of worshippers and acted out the motions of the Muslim call to prayer. A video of the prayer went viral with the title "Wellesley, Massachusetts Public School Students Learn to Pray to Allah." Charges flew that the school exposed the children to Muslims who intended to convert American schoolchildren. Wellesley school officials defended the course, but also acknowledged the delicate dance teachers must perform when dealing with religion in the classroom.

Courts long ago banned public school teachers from preaching of any kind. But the question remains: How much should schools teach about the world's religions? Answering that question in recent decades has pitted schools against their communities.

Veteran education journalist Linda K. Wertheimer spent months with that class, and traveled to other communities around the nation, listening to voices on all sides of the controversy, including those of clergy, teachers, children, and parents who are Muslim, Jewish, Christian, Sikh, or atheist.  Wertheimer's fascinating investigation, which includes a return to her rural Ohio school, which once ran weekly Christian Bible classes, reveals a public education system struggling to find the right path forward and offers a promising roadmap for raising a new generation of religiously literate Americans.  Learn more about the book HERE.

About The Author: Linda K. Wertheimer is an award-winning education writer and essayist. She was previously the education editor of The Boston Globe and a reporter at the Dallas Morning News and Orlando Sentinel. Her work has appeared in numerous publications, including The Atlantic, Moment and the Boston Globe Magazine. A graduate of Northwestern's Medill School of Journalism, she lives in Lexington.

    Contact: Robert Hayes   978-640-4490 x 205   rhayes@mvlc.org

About The Program: Learn how a Methodist Minister from New York and a principled American naval officer helped rescue more than 250,000 refugees during the genocide of Armenian and Greek Christians.

About The Book: In September 1922, the richest city of the Mediterranean was burned, and countless numbers of Christian refugees killed. The city was Smryna, and the event was the final episode of the 20th Century's genocide -- the slaughter of three million Armenians, Greeks and Assyrians of the Ottoman Empire. The slaughter at Smyrna occurred as warships of the great powers stood by -- the United States, Great Britain, France and Italy. The deaths of hundreds of thousands seemed inevitable until an American minister staged a bold rescue with the help of a courageous U.S. naval officer. Now, the forgotten story of one of the greatest humanitarian acts of history gets told.

About The Author: Lou Ureneck is a professor at Boston University and writer who lives in Boston. His first book, Backcast, won the National Outdoor Book Award for literary merit. He has worked as a reporter and editor at the Providence Journal, the Portland (Maine) Press Herald and the Philadelphia Inquirer. He was also a Nieman fellow and editor-in-residence at Harvard University.
