WHEN YOU DISAGREE WITH THE TEAM ABOUT YOUR CHILD’S SPECIAL EDUCATION PROGRAM

Advocating for children in the special education system can sometimes be overwhelming for parents. Over the past decade, Attorney Jeffrey Sankey has worked with hundreds of parents to help them obtain special education services for their children. In this presentation, Attorney Sankey will discuss strategies to help you to work collaboratively with your child’s special education team and, when disagreements arise, the various options available to parents to resolve them.  Please come with any questions you may have.

If you have any questions, please contact Leah Nabstedt (SEPAC) at 617-943-2452 or via email at lnabstedt@verizon.net

*For Braintree Public Schools staff; sign up on smart.edu and see a SEPAC representative for Professional Development credit forms.

Cuba in Transition: Where Does Cuba Go From Here?

The revolution gave Cuba universal health care, literacy, sociability, as well as a housing stock that is decaying. Now that the United States is friendlier, what will happen? Will Cuba give up its socialist base for capitalism? Will U.S. developers move in and undermine the progress that people made? These are the pressing problems Cuba faces today.

 Introduction to Mindfulness

Mindfulness is a concept that comes from the Western contemplative and Eastern meditation traditions. In the past 25 years it has been found to be useful and effective in health care in the treatment of various conditions such as stress, chronic pain, anxiety, depression, and cancer. Mindfulness is defined as “awareness without judgment of what is, via direct and immediate experience.” In our culture, so many of us are disconnected from emotions, physical sensations, and the present moment. This small, experiential group program will introduce members to the concept with brief exercises to rediscover the present moment. Maximum 20 participants.

Note Taking & Test Preparation w/ Eliza.  Grades 6-12.

Many students sit down to “study” for a test without ever learning what that really means. In this workshop students will learn strategies to help them perform better on tests, including learning about their own learning styles and understanding more about how the brain processes, remembers, and retrieves information. Students will learn how to use a two-column note-taking template, how to use multi-sensory input to aid memorization, how to practice time management strategies during and when studying for tests, and how to sort through large volumes of information to know what materials to study.

By the end of this workshop students will have a variety of tools they can use to make their studying more effective and more efficient.

Registration is required.

“The evocative and rich tones of Native American flutes will be combined with the kind of poetry “that people who don’t typically like poetry are able to enjoy,” when musician, author, yoga teacher, and former English teacher Jerry Lagadec performs…”  -- The Boston Globe, 6/15/14

A performance of Native American flute, guitar, and the spoken word (poetry for people who "don't like poetry"). Jerry Lagadec of Halifax, Mass. has played guitar in front of audiences for decades, but didn’t pick up his first Native American flute until he was in his 50s. Now he has a large collection of authentic Native American flutes in various sizes and tones that he plays along with the guitar, using a musical and rhythmic backdrop to create a mesmerizing, live tapestry of spoken-word poetry and music

It is an experience both meditative and thought-provoking. Don't miss this musical, literary event!

"On a September day in Manhattan in 1939, twenty-something Caroline Ferriday is consumed by her efforts to secure the perfect boutonniere for an important French diplomat and resisting the romantic advances of a married actor. Meanwhile across the Atlantic, Kasia Kuzmerick, a Polish Catholic teenager, is nervously anticipating the changes that are sure to come since Germany has declared war on Poland. As tensions rise abroad - and in her personal life - Caroline's interest in aiding the war effort in France grows and she eventually comes to hear about the dire situation at the Ravensbruck all-female concentration camp. At the same time, Kasia's carefree youth is quickly slipping away, only to be replaced by a fervor for the Polish resistance movement. Through Ravensbruck - and the horrific atrocities taking place there told in part by an infamous German surgeon, Herta Oberheuser - the two women's lives will converge in unprecedented ways and a novel of redemption and hope emerges that is breathtaking in scope and depth"

Let Laurie know what you're planning on making ahead of time so we can have a variety of dishes to sample. No need to double recipes; we just need enough for everyone to have a taste.

The May cookbook selection is Food52 Genius Recipes: 100 Recipes That Will Change the Way You Cook by Kristen Miglore. Copies will be available from the Circulation Desk starting April  27th. Please register through the library event calendar or contact Laurie by phone (781-848-0405, x4430) or email (lcavanaugh@braintreema.gov) to join the group.

The plan is for the group to meet every other month to try out a different cookbook each time. New members are always welcome!
