Image result for barbara s. shapiroCelebrate the One Braintree, One Book, 2017 Grand Finale with an afternoon with the author!

Ms. Shapiro’s books will be available to purchase through the Friends of Thayer Public Library. This is a free event but will be ticketed. Tickets will be available at the library starting April12th.

B.A. Shapiro has done it all! She is the author of seven novels, four screenplays, and a non-fiction book. She has directed research projects for a residential substance abuse facility, worked as a systems analyst/statistician, headed the Boston office of a software development firm, and served as an adjunct professor teaching sociology at Tufts University and creative writing at Northeastern University, but likes being a novelist best.

When she quit a high-pressure job after the birth of her second child she was nervous about what to do next. She asked her mother, "If I'm not playing at being superwoman anymore, I don't know who I am." She was answered with a  question: "If you had one year to live, how would you want to spend it?" The answer: write a novel and spend more time with her children. And that's exactly what she did!

Ms. Shapiro now lives in Boston with her husband Dan and her dog Sagan. And yes, she is working on another novel!

Experience an hour of mindfulness listening to professional musician Jerry Lagadec’s performance of Native American flute, guitar, and the spoken word. Jerry Lagadec of Halifax has played guitar in front of audiences for decades, but didn’t pick up his first Native American flute until he was in his 50s. Now he has a large collection of authentic Native American flutes in various sizes and tones that he plays along with the guitar, using a musical and rhythmic backdrop to create a mesmerizing, live tapestry of spoken-word poetry and music.

“The evocative and rich tones of Native American flutes will be combined with the kind of poetry “that people who don’t typically like poetry are able to enjoy,” when musician, author, yoga teacher, and former English teacher Jerry Lagadec performs…”  -- The Boston Globe, 6/15/14

Free and open to the public. No tickets or advance registration necessary.

It is an experience both meditative and thought-provoking. Don't miss this musical, literary event!

"On a September day in Manhattan in 1939, twenty-something Caroline Ferriday is consumed by her efforts to secure the perfect boutonniere for an important French diplomat and resisting the romantic advances of a married actor. Meanwhile across the Atlantic, Kasia Kuzmerick, a Polish Catholic teenager, is nervously anticipating the changes that are sure to come since Germany has declared war on Poland. As tensions rise abroad - and in her personal life - Caroline's interest in aiding the war effort in France grows and she eventually comes to hear about the dire situation at the Ravensbruck all-female concentration camp. At the same time, Kasia's carefree youth is quickly slipping away, only to be replaced by a fervor for the Polish resistance movement. Through Ravensbruck - and the horrific atrocities taking place there told in part by an infamous German surgeon, Herta Oberheuser - the two women's lives will converge in unprecedented ways and a novel of redemption and hope emerges that is breathtaking in scope and depth"

    Contact: Terri     tstano@braintreema.gov

Please join Ted Reinstein talk about his current book Wicked Pissed: New England’s Most Famous Feuds.

From sports to politics, food to finance, aviation to engineering, to bitter disputes over simple boundaries themselves, New England’s feuds have peppered the region’s life for centuries.

They’ve been raw and rowdy, sometimes high minded and humorous, and in a place renowned for its deep sense of history, often long-running and legendary.

There are even some that will undoubtedly outlast the region’s ancient low stonewalls.

Ted Reinstein, a native New Englander and local writer, offers us fascinating stories, some known, others not so much, from the history of New England in this fun, accessible book. Bringing to life many of the fights, spats, and arguments that have, in many ways, shaped the area itself, Reinstein demonstrates what it really means to be Wicked Pissed.

Ted Reinstein has been a reporter for “Chronicle,” WCVB-TV/Boston’s award-winning—and America’s longest-running, locally-produced—nightly news magazine since 1997. In addition, he is a regular contributor for the station’s political roundtable show and writes a weekly opinion column. He lives just west of Boston with his wife and two daughters.
